Bachmann: It’s All Chris Matthews’ Fault! ‘He Laid A Trap, And I Walked Into It’

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) is still on the defensive from an appearance last Friday on MSNBC’s Hardball, in which she called for the media to conduct a “penetrating exposé” into anti-American views of members of Congress.

Speaking with the St. Cloud Times on Tuesday, Bachmann said she regretted suggesting that Barack Obama held “anti-American” views. Referencing Chris Matthews by name 12 times in a 6 minute interview, Bachmann portrayed herself as the victim of a clever ploy devised by the MSNBC host:

Chris Matthews laid a trap, and I walked into it. [...]

Chris Matthews was using the term over and over, and I should not have used it. [...]

This was Chris Matthews. I made a big mistake by going on the show. I never should have. [...]

I just didn’t recognize — I never watched the Chris Matthews show before. I should have before I went on. I didn’t recognize that he would lay a trap the way that he did.

Bachmann concluded the interview by circling back to where she began: “I didn’t bring the word choice up. That was Chris Matthews who brought the word choice up. Unfortunately, like I said, I walked into a trap.” Watch it:

Bachmann, who appears frequently on Fox News, apparently doesn’t understand that journalists on other networks sometimes ask critical questions. The issue isn’t Matthews’ questions; it’s Bachmann’s answers. Here’s key portions from the transcript:

MATTHEWS: So you believe that Barack Obama may have anti- American views.

REP. BACHMANN: Absolutely. I’m very concerned that he may have anti-American views.

[...]

MATTHEWS: What parts of America would you say are anti-American? What parts of this country?

REP. BACHMANN: Well, I would say that people who hold anti- American views. I don’t think it’s geography. I think it’s people who don’t like America, who detest America.

[...]

MATTHEWS: How many do you suspect of your colleagues as being anti-American?

REP. BACHMANN: What I would say — what I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating exposé and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America? I think people would love to see an exposé like that.

Bachmann’s biggest disappointment must be that she wishes she hadn’t been so honest about her true feelings.

Update Bachmann made similar comments in a speech to the St. Cloud, MN Rotary Club. Bachmann said, "I do believe firmly that a trap was laid and I stepped into it."

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Make Rep. Michele Bachmann a single term congresswoman!

  2. Perry logan says:

When Chris Matthews outsmarts you, it’s time to resign.

“There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”
—President George W. Bush, Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002

Probably the same saying in Minnesota, too.

  4. Arctic Ghetto says:

Bachmann was just parroting a Republican talk line. It has backfired and not just with her. If there was a trap it was of the Republicans own making.

  5. Crusty Old Bastard says:

BBB just went from Better Business Bureau to Bye Bye Bachmann. But House business without Bachmann would certainly be better.

  6. conniptionfit says:

That sound you hear is Anti-American Michelle Bachman’s Anti- American career in the Anti-American Republican congress going up in Anti-American smoke. Good Riddance.

  7. St_Steven says:

I watched that thing live. He did no such thing. He kept giving her the opportunity to back down. Asking over and over again, basically, “are you sure you really want to say this.” He just kept feeding her rope and she hung herself. Not because Matthews did anything, but because she is fascist. Just like Palin. Just like Martinez (who got an irate message from me yesterday as a (hehehehe) registered republican).

  8. tballou says:

What a lying sack of shit. This is the most transparently ridiculous piece of backpeddling I have ever seen. She said what she meant and she meant what she said. She can try to spin this around to that mean old Chris Mathews all she wants, but this is all on her.

  9. Taguba says:

It was a trap. A trap with a GIANT SIGN ON IT saying ” YOU ARE WALKING INTO A TRAP“. a trap to catch moronic, paste eating, hate mongers !!!
We all saw him string her along until she made a fine noose and hung herself. this is a typical GOP representative.

  10. kasinca says:

This congresswoman is a fool, a bigot, a racist, hypocritical moron. Why does she make a salary paid by tax dollars?

  11. Zooey says:

Ah yes, the “strong independent” right wing feminist: “Chris Matthews is a big old meanie, and he was picking on me! After all, I’m just a girl…”

  12. Zooey says:

TP, can you fix the video so it doesn’t play automatically? I’m tired of listening to that whine…

  13. Chuck Feney says:

Adios Michelle…and, take Mean Jean from Ohio with you. Don’t the door hit you on the way out.

  14. misshusseinmolly says:

“It was a trap, I tell you! He just let me rave on without stopping me! I was going to say that dissent isn’t anti-American, but he wouldn’t let me! Did you see the way he forced me to say the things I did?”

Sorry, Michele — you obviously shouldn’t be allowed to serve on the board of your local homeowner’s association, let alone represent your corner of Minnesota in Congress.

  15. avchavis says:

See, God don’t like ugly! Now Bachmann is trying to make excuses! She’s an embarrassment to all good christians in America!

  16. CageyCretin says:

I give her credit for being coached very well in her retraction and displacement of the blame on to the interviewer. But she is a complete T O O L, and we aren’t buying it. You gave your honest opinion and, suprise suprise, the people didn’t like your divisiveness. Bin Laden is anti-American. The repug talking point that anyone not-repug is anti-American has worn too thin.

    loser.

  17. unbelievable says:

To borrow from Conservative slogans of sympathy: Boo-freaking-hoo.

  18. Faiz says:

Hey Zooey (#12), we tried to fix it, but unfortunately, their video player doesn’t allow for modification.

  19. conniptionfit says:

I think the difference in her demeanor between Matthew’s show and this interview is instructive. She bounced onto Matthew’s all full of enthusiasm for bashing Obama and Democrats. He didn’t lay a trap that she walked into. She (and all stupid parroting republicans) have been lulled into the idea that calling people who disagree with you un-patriotic is acceptable. She’s been living in Republican-land, and she had no idea that Chris Matthews wasn’t her friend like that dreamy Hannity fellow.
This is a direct result of a major political candidate cris-crossing the country telling his supporters that it’s ok to be racist, insular hicks.

  20. Taguba says:

Looks like another republican leader who has no clue that they tape those shows and we can watch them over and over to see her actual words IN CONTEXT !!

Now she is calling us all stupid. we know what she said and we know what she meant, for her to try and lie to us is pretty sickening. but from her it’s not surprising.

Matbe she should stick to Faux news and Sean hannity’s lists.

  21. Xisithrus says:

The politicos should stop believing in the existence of the ‘reality-based’ world they tried to create.

  22. Dumb_Hussein_Fox says:

    Dear Lord

I know I don’t pray as often as I should, but please, this one time, can you get Michelle Bachmann to appear on the Colbert Report.

    Always

    #Zooey Says:

TP, can you fix the video so it doesn’t play automatically? I’m tired of listening to that whine…

Putting the videos on auto-play also stops many people from checking in at TP while they are at work. I occasionally take a peek at what’s going on during the course of a day. Since I share an office with my boss, you can imagine how much trouble that has gotten me into. Even though I don’t take breaks and eat lunch at my desk, my boss thinks every minute I spend in the office must be consumed with work.

  26. Zimzone says:

Bachmann’s opponent here in MN has now received in excess of $1 million in the last 4 days…thanks, Michele!

This is a woman who’s time has passed. In fact, her ‘time’ was the 19th century.

MN is proud to have a Muslim, Rep. Keith Ellingson in Congress.

    Michele? Not so much…

  27. Zooey says:

    Thanks anyway, Faiz. :(

  28. Xisithrus says:

TP, can you fix the video so it doesn’t play automatically? I’m tired of listening to that whine…

I use Firefox and the FlashBlock plug-in that stops that from happening. http://flashblock.mozdev.org/ not because of TP, of course, but the ever growing numbers of flash ads on web sites.

  29. larkohio says:

You know this is stupid, we are all Americans, and we love our country. Bachmann thinks that if you do not spout Republican talking points that you don’t. Nonsense! I love my country, and I suspect that the vast majority of Americans do as well. It appears that this is a favorite thing of Republicans, including Sarah Palin, to say that Democrats don’t love America. I say, bull pucky, ladies!

  30. 5th Estate says:

  33. CageyCretin says:

I never watched the Chris Matthews show before. I should have before I went on.

So, perhaps she thought this was a partizan conservative neo-con show (like she is used to with FOX). She thought she was preaching her hate to other haters.

  34. cha cha cha says:

ah yes, the Admiral Ackbar defense!

  35. gummitch says:

Bachmann is in a lose-lose situation. She’s either a shallow-thinking fascist or she’s so stupid that anyone can manipulate her into saying anything they want. Or, of course, both.

  36. Keith says:

The Alaska Independence Party is anti-America. They want to secede from the USA. It ain’t a double standard!

  39. 5th Estate says:

Well done Keith. That’s the first time in days that I’ve seen anyone spell secede correctly! :)

  40. Keith says:

Poor Michelle. She accidentally stepped in America and it bit her.

  42. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Oh, you definitely stepped in it, Michele. No doubt about that. It wasn’t a trap, and you sure did step in it.

  43. Xisithrus says:

How did she step in it with both feet firmly planted in her yap?

  44. citizen_pain says:

But but but… I didn’t mean to hit the guy, he put his face right in front of my fist!

Please. The one thing that annoys me the most about these right wing nut jobs is their utter inability to assume any sort of responsibility or accountability for their words or actions.

My three year old daughter has the gumption to admit it when she has done something wrong.

  45. Keith says:

She said she was taking responsibility for what she said at the exact time she wasn’t.

  46. stewarjt says:

Oh my gosh! She creeps me out more when she tries to be reasonable than when she is a far right wing nut!

  47. burro says:

The stealthy. The nefarious. The James Bond of political journalism himself, Mr. Chris Matthews, lulled Bachmann the Loon into an inattentive stupor and then he POUNCED. Ah-Hah!!

And now Bachmann the Loon is awash in her own Bachsh*t. It’s what Matthews does all the time. The landscape is littered with his victims. Oh…it’s not? No victims? Just this one? Bachmann the Loon?

    Oh. Well. Never mind.

  48. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Clearly, she’d also make a better elected official than most of the GOOPers.

  49. conniptionfit says:

Seriously?? 1 million dollars to Bachman’s opponent?? How i hell does THAT happen?? Hey, I live in the district formerly known as Tancredo’s district (colorado 6th), and no matter what stupid stuff he said or did his opponents never raised that kind of money- and Tancredo was WAY stupider and more racist than Bachman! Now we’ve got this terrific guy (Hank Eng) running, and his Republican opponent is Mike Coffman- maybe you’ve been hearing of him? He’s our Colorado Secretary of State, and is responsible for rejecting tens of thousands of new voter registrations, because he instructed registrators that if the voter doesn’t have his ID on him when he registers that he can simply put down his last 4 digits of his Soc. Sec. number, but he doesn’t have to check the box next to it that says he doesn’t HAVE a Driver’s license. Once the forms were turned in Coffman began rejecting all the forms that had a Soc Sec number, without the little box check. Of course we have no exact numbers, but it’s in the thousands- and we do know that new Democratic registrations are out numbering Republican 4 to 1. So why don’t we send some of that excess love to Hank- surely Tinkenberg has enough by now?

  50. Zimzone says:

So, Tweety Bird just caught a Puddy Tat!

If you can stand it, watch her eyes during the interview. They dart or flash down every time she lies, which is numerous.

    Bachmann-Regurgitate-Overdrive comes to mind.

Or, as Al Franken so eloquently stated, ‘Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them’.

Michel Bachmann has become the female Rush. ICK!

  51. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Perhaps she should go tell this to the folks at Fixed Noise because we ain’t buying this crap. We actually saw what she had to say and how she said it. Matthews gave her the opportunity to back away from what she was saying and she didn’t take it. She stepped into her own mess.

  55. Xisithrus says:

    Michele McCarthy.

  56. deebaser says:

Actually i’d like to back down from my ‘Matthews is a lightweight’ comment…

I forgot about one of my top 10 favorite moments in punditry:

Chris Matthews calling out the guy shouting ‘appeaser’ who had absolutely no idea what appeasement was.

    That was awesome.

  57. Shayne says:

Poor Michele was born too late. If she had been around for the Salem witch trials more innocent women would have surly died.

  58. scytherius says:

Wow. These people re-define stupid. I don’t know if the argument “I was trapped” is the worst part of “I’ve never watched Chris Matthews before”. How can you hold a national office and watch everyone from O’Reilly to Olbermann?

    They are so funny today.

  61. Shayne says:

It’s so obvious people like Palin and Bachmann watch Fox News only. And because Fox tells them that the other news programs only bad mouth Republicans and never investigate Democrats they believe that’s true. Obviously that’s why these two geniuses believe that Obama hasn’t been vetted. That’s the same problem Bush and Cheney had, tunnel vision from watching only Fox and not understanding what the rest of the country is saying.

  62. pluege says:

not much of a brain trust there Bachmann, eh? Oh yea, that’s right, you’re republican – the dumbest a-holes on Earth.

  63. nofltwlt says:

“I didn’t know the gun was loaded and I’m so sorry friend.”

Do you remember this excerpt from an old country western diddy? Michele Bachmann does.

  64. Dirty Hippie says:

    Michelle,

It’s called giving you enough rope to hang yourself. You succeeded brilliantly.

  65. Shayne says:

Hey tokin librul did you see the segment Chris Mathews did with the “appeasement” idiot. No I didn’t think so. It wasn’t the fact that Mathews knew what the word meant it was the reich winger screaming it that DID NOT know what it meant that was the point. Why don’t you talk about something you know.

  66. 5th Estate says:

IMHO Chris Matthews really loves politics. He loves the game of it all. But he doesn’t know and hasn’t learned a damn thing about policy. Look at the book he wrote that John Stewart called “a manual for spiritual sadness” ( roughly).

Matthews took no philosophical umbrage at Bachmann’s words, he just knew that politically it was a dangerous path that she was treading.

  67. Loonie says:

Shove it, you crusty old reptile. Your true colors were on display for all to see. All Matthews did was his job.

And about bloody time, one might add.

  68. SnowCritter says:

It would be nice if this latest serving of stupidity guaranteed her defeat, but that’s definitely NOT a given in this district. Honest to God, there are more than a few people around here that actually agree with what she spouted! Don’t believe me? Just go to the St. Cloud Times (www.sctimes.com) Web site and view some of the comments on the relevant stories. Be warned, though. It takes a strong stomach to get through them.

  69. 5th Estate says:

no fitwit: “I didn’t know the gun was loaded and I’m so sorry friend.”

  71. NoMoreBush says:

True Republican form — my screw ups are someone else’s fault — no accountability. I saw the piece with my own eyes and heard her words and Matthews’ words with my own ears. If anything, he was trying to make this fire breather think about what she was actually saying, namely that she was accusing a member of the US Senate of being unAmerican. And she kept digging and reveling in the orgy of her own stupidity.

Memo to the GOP — THIS IS NOT A WINNING STRATEGY. Dividing the country into us and them ain’t a workin. I mean, for Nancy Pfuttinfluffer to go on and insult the largest segment of voters in a battleground state as somehow inauthentic is astonishing. I am sure the families in Arlington and Alexandria whose family members burned to death in the Pentagon on 9-11-01 in fake Virginia are very understanding of and in agreement with Ms. Pfuttinfluffer’s views. (snark off). This is why you are losing and deserve to lose BIG.

Neither John McCain nor Sarah Palin have a monopoly on Americanism. So STFU on this already. It’s offensive.

Signed also a Real Virginian in Arlington

And I don’t think that she cleared anything up at all… what exactly does that mean: anti-American?? I don’t think that she really knows what the hubbub is all about…

And Chris Mathews’ term “Anti-American” came from Sarah Palin, did it not?

And RFK Jr’s remarks about The Alaskan Independence Party is based on “anti-American” remarks espoused by the founder of the AIP — clearly Michelle Bachmann doesn’t have a clue about the AIP.

  76. And the beat goes on says:

I really have to give Chris Matthews credit for the restraint he showed. He loves talking/shouting over some guests. I honestly wonder if he just couldn’t believe the crap coming out of this idiot’s mouth? Whatever it was, I am delighted these creeps are starting to show their true colors. Maybe they are forgetting they are talking to a national audience and not one of their little repuke-only campaign audience. Keep it up and the Dems will probably have a bullet-proof majority!

Sadly it wasn’t a bear trap.

Michelle Bachmann is your typical, scatterbrained republican puppet. She said what she said because that is how she truly feels and now since Americans and Minnesotans have expressed their anger she thinks she can throw the blame of her ANTI-AMERICAN, ANTI-CHRISTIAN, hateful rhetoric at Chris Matthews whose only mistake was to allow this psychotic b*tch to ramble on and on and on and on! I pray that my fellow Minnesotans wise up and vote her out of office.

Has John McCain repudiated Bachmanns comments yet? Has he repudiated the jackass congressman from North Carolina yet? Has he repudiated Mel Martinez comments yet? Has he spoken out against the Alaskan Independence Party yet and what they and Todd Palin stand for?

    NOPE!

John McCain is a liar, he is not worthy or suitable to become our next president. His judgement alone in choosing Sarah Palin proves it but one can delve deeper. He was connected to Charles Keating, he is friends with a KNOWN felon G Gordon Liddy, he song like a canary to his North Vietnamese captives, he didn’t defend his family when smeared by the Bush campaign.

How does he know anything about healthcare when he has been receiving taxpayer paid for healthcare for most of his life? What does he know about struggling Americans when he has enjoyed the life of luxury since hitching up with a rich heiress? The man has No character or morals as proven by his dirt ball campaign, his dumping of his first wife, etc.

He is an American scumbag who used his family name to get where he is today. He used the Navy to launch his future, and didn’t ever count on being shot down but has since used his POW status to portray himself as something more than he really is. He is what he claims he’s against in DC.

  82. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Ah, a fine addition to my miniseries, “The Bachmann Debacle,” on RealityChex.com. Here’s hoping the last installment will be titled “Tinklenberg Defeats Bachman.”

For a break from the serious stuff, please check out one of the best Obama videos I’ve seen/heard at RealityChex.com at http://www.realitychex.com Put your dancin’ shoes on. Oui, on peut! There’s a link back to Faiz’ post under “The Bachman Debacle” at the bottom (where it belongs) of the center column.

Oh, wait, my post #92–Palin put the words in her mouth when she sh*t them out first. My oopsie.

  96. DidHeJustSayThat says:

What is most unsettling is that you could write the script a la Barack Obama (the race baiter) who pointed out the republicans would be doing exactly what they are doing right now.

The blaspheme is always followed by an assertion they said what they meant, which is usually followed by a denial and always by a non-apology or excuse.

The tactic is transparent. I hope this election seals it for the republicans. They’re in a corner and lurching at any and everyone. This while most American are trying to figure what’s for dinner, not having the luxury to watch the Jerry Springer madness.

Kasinca contined, “But, other than that, she a very nice person.” Of course, no one saw Kasinca cross all of her fingers and toes!

  98. marlow says:

The country’s come a ways since the days of McCarthy and HUAC. Those were rip-roaring days for the fascists, I know. You’ll be very lucky to retain your seat, Michelle.

  99. QUALAR says:

It’s obvious that the trap is located in her head and it’s clogged. Nothing in her thoughts that a good flushing won’t cure. Good luck keeping your job.

  100. ChrisSEA says:

Mathews may have used the phrase, but she picked it up with gusto and ran with it.

This is what Republicans do though, they take a meaningless word or phrase (and never both to define it) and then blather about the mouth with it relentlessly.

It’s all bluster and no substance. That’s exactly what she did here. I kept thinking, ‘what are these anti-American views? what are they?’

Chris Matthews calling out the guy shouting ‘appeaser’ who had absolutely no idea what appeasement was. That was awesome.
    October 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 am

Knowing the definition of ‘appeasement’ does not qualify one as a “heavy-weight pundit”…except in the USofA…

    Token,

check out the clip on youtube. It was brilliant. This twit was shouting that Obama was an appeaser and that he no different than Neville and Matthews completely called him on it… with follow up.

I’m by no means a Matthews fan, but it was refreshing to see a talking points factory taken down a few pegs. It’s the type of thing that should happen more often.

  102. Bullsmith says:

You’d think if you’re going to be pretty much batshite crazy, you could at least have courage in your convictions.

  103. upside99 says:

Assuming she and Mean Jean and the Boner all get re-elected, won’t it be fun to watch their collective heads explode when they are constantly in the minority and all they can do is throw tantrums and cry?

Will make C-SPAN the No. 1 comedy channel!

Probably watching your opponent raise a cool Mill in 5 days might have had some impact on her ‘lack of conviction’.

  105. Magic Dog says:

I’m kind of pissed off at Michele Bachmann. She caused me to spend a grand on her opponent, some guy named Tinkleberry or something like that. There goes the kid’s new shoes, the case of whisky, and the gross of condoms. Magnums, so you know.

If Chris Matthews was distorting missing links to Patriotism and anti-Americanism, then why didn’t she correct Chris at that moment instead of play along…
… Because she believed it on some level?

  108. Jackie says:

Republican rats are turning on each other now. Let’s not leave out the corrupt Dems too.

  109. 1bassman9 says:

Don’t these morons in DC ever take responsibility for what they say. What is this nonsense of her being trapped. I watched that interview in real time and was appalled at her attacks on points of view contrary to the Republi-con Party as un-American and I am sick and tired of these mental midgets
using the term un-patriotic as Israel uses the term anti-semite. We do not live in a theocracy and disagreements with Government policies does not make you Anti-American. Besides, isn’t Michele Bachman the twit that fawned and gushed all over George “The Emperor With No Clothes” Bush at the SOTU address when he outright lied to America to send us to war.
Hey twit, why isn’t that Un-American!!!

  110. Bozo The Neoclown says:

soooo, botox beyotch bachmann had NO idea…the name “hardball” didn’t give her a clue. The only trap this skank walked into is appearing on a show where the viewers didn’t share the same disgusting point of view as herself and she got called to the carpet for it.

  111. Musk says:

LOL . . . what a total doofus! Apparently Mz. Bachman has no control over her own mind. Her vacuous expression proves that.

  112. Helga says:

Michele Bachmann has been on Chris’s show many times. She is on Larry King all the time lately. She always says stupid things, this is nothing new. She talks over everyone, she is a PITA.

  113. continuum says:

Doesn’t accept responsibility for her own words. It’s Chris’ fault.

Why does not rightwing nutjob Republican ever accept responsibility for anything?

Why do the Republicans continually use “the dog ate my homework” defense when ever caught in a lie or crime?

Republicans are NOT the party of personal integrity nor personal responsibility.

  114. La carte du monde says:

Joe McCarthy was trapped by spineless talk show journalists as well… time after time after time… in his own mind.

  115. hailardri says:

Wow. That Matthews is a sly dude.

He gave Bachmann “enough rope to hang herself”.

    She did.
