On the defensive over her controversial Hardball appearance last Friday, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) told the St. Cloud Times yesterday that she regretted suggesting that Barack Obama held “anti-American” views. But at the same time Bachmann was apologizing for her remarks to traditional media outlets, Bachmann continued to cast aspersions on Obama’s patriotism in a series of appearances on right-wing radio shows.
On Hugh Hewitt’s radio show yesterday, Bachmann declared that “Barack Obama’s views are against America”:
BACHMANN: All I did on Chris Matthews is I questioned Chris Matthews and said, “look, if John McCain had friends like Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers and Father Pfleger, you’d be all over him Chris, but you’ve laid off of Barack Obama.” And so, he was using the word “Anti-American” and I told Chris, what I question are Barack Obama’s views. Because Barack Obama’s views are against America. They won’t be good for our country.
On Mike Gallagher’s radio show this morning, Bachmann attacked Obama’s policy proposals, asking rhetorically, “Are they for America or will they be against traditional American ideals and values?”:
BACHMANN: And they can’t take it because the point is what are Barack Obama’s policies? Are they for America or will they be against traditional American ideals and values? And I’ll tell you what. Punishing tax rates, redistribution of wealth, socialized medicine, inputing censorship in the form of the un-Fairness Doctrine and taking away the secret ballot from the worker has nothing to do with traditional American values. That’s why your listeners need to know. Otherwise the United States may be literally changed forever.
When Gallagher asked, “How is it not reasonable to wonder if that’s anti-American?,” Bachmann did not disagree with him. Instead, she simply replied, “what I did is touch a nerve, just like Joe the Plumber touched a nerve.” Listen to clips from both shows here:
During her appearance on Gallagher’s show, Bachmann claimed that media scrutiny of her “anti-American” comments was a coordinated effort “to get my scalp on a platter.”
Transcript:
HEWITT: Now Michele, you’ve got a great organization, you’ve got a great great reputation and so, I assume your guys are not folding under the pressure that they’re rallying. Is that true?BACHMANN: Yes, I mean, we’re working hard, but we just don’t have the financial resources that they have. I did all the work that I needed to. Laid all the foundation, but this will be like nothing we’ve ever seen. Plus, it’s the in kind donation that all the local media, local TV stations, they’re all running statements saying that I’m Joe McCarthy and that I am saying that Barack Obama is anti-American.
All I did on Chris Matthews is I questioned Chris Matthews and said, “look, if John McCain had friends like Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers and Father Pfleger, you’d be all over him Chris, but you’ve laid off of Barack Obama.” And so, he was using the word “Anti-American” and I told Chris, what I question are Barack Obama’s views. Because Barack Obama’s views are against America. They won’t be good for our country. And so, anyway, it went on from there. And if people want to read the transcript, you know, I encourage them to please read the transcript. But all of a sudden this is out of control and the Speaker of the House made a visit here to Minnesota to make sure that I’m taken out.
[...]
BACHMANN: I touched something that’s off limits. I called Chris Matthews on the carpet and I said, “Chris, look, if John McCain had named as two of his three life mentors, Jeremiah Wright and Father Pfleger.”
GALLAGHER: Right.
BACHMANN: “You would have been all over him. You have failed to do your due dilligence as the national media to check out Barack Obama.” And they can’t take it because the point is what are Barack Obama’s policies? Are they for America or will they be against traditional American ideals and values? And I’ll tell you what. Punishing tax rates, redistribution of wealth, socialized medicine, inputing censorship in the form of the un-Fairness Doctrine and taking away the secret ballot from the worker has nothing to do with traditional American values. That’s why your listeners need to know. Otherwise the United States may be literally changed forever. If Barack Obama becomes the next president, Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, Harry “We lost the war” Reid, the head of the Senate. And then they have the power to appoint three more Ruth Bader Ginsburgs to the Supreme Court. What are we going to do then?
GALLAGHER: Well, that’s precisely whats at play here. I mean, you know, I was watching CNN, Willie Brown from San Francisco talk about all, the agenda of pushing forth gay marriage, and you know, under a liberal Democrat president and Democrats in the Congress, I mean, as San Francisco goes, let’s face it, so goes the rest of the country. I mean we’ll see a different country than the one we recognize. And yet your comments were so mainstream. I mean, and that’s what’s fascinating. There’s nothing you said, even on the show, and I know that you’ve been now, people tried to corner you about your comments on the show. You didn’t say anything that isn’t what ordinary Americans are wondering about a presidential candidate who talks about spreading around the wealth and cavorting with a guy like Bill Ayers and a woman like Bernadine Dohrn who wants to overthrow capitalism. How is it not reasonable to wonder if that’s anti-American?
BACHMANN: And what I did is touch a nerve, just like Joe the Plumber touched a nerve by questioning Barack Obama’s punishing high tax rates.
GALLAGHER: Right.
BACHMANN: And then Barack Obama saying that he wants to spread the wealth around. That’s exactly what happened to me on Chris Matthews. I touched a nerve, which shows how ultra hyper-sensitive leftists are right now in this country. They know we’re a center-right country and they know Americans would shrink back if they truly come to understand how Obama will radically change this country. I mean they’re so afraid, Nancy Pelosi came here to Minnesota. She went in front of the media and she said to the Minnesota media that me, Michele Bachmann, has dishonored the position that I hold in Congress and that my statements discredit me as a person.
GALLAGHER: Wow.
BACHMANN: And then she got on her plane and left. I’ll tell you, right now…
GALLAGHER: She’s got a bigger plane, by the way, she didn’t like the plane she had originally. She demanded a bigger plane so she could fly around the country and discredit people like Michele Bachmann.
BACHMANN: And that’s why shows like the Today Show are banding together with Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews to get my scalp on a platter. Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews alone have raised $1 million for my opponent just since last Friday.
GALLAGHER: You’re kidding me.
BACHMANN: No no, over a million dollars in online contributions.
GALLAGHER: Wow.
BACHMANN: In that amount of time to take out my scalp. They’re serious about it. Because they can’t stand that I’m fighting them. And Nancy Pelosi also pledged to donate $1 million toward my opponent. So, $2 million have come in since Friday to make sure that I lose this election. That’s why I need. I’m desperate for help right now or else I lose.
No, Michle, we don’t want your head on a platter…

October 22nd, 2008 at 4:43 pmSomeone needs to pin her down on specifically which American “values” Obama is against.
Freedom of Speech. Freedom of Religion. Freedom of Assembly. Supporting and defending the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Since Obama is for all of these American “values,” I want to hear her definition of “values.”

“And the difference between Anti-American and Against America is?????”
I was wondering the same thing here. If she wanted to say against the values she feels matter in America or something like that, then I think people would have to give that to her. That’s a judgment on her part and it’s clear it’s based upon her specific beliefs.
To say someone is against or anti- an ENTIRE COUNTRY is a whole other matter. This woman is nuts.

October 22nd, 2008 at 5:03 pmWe too often concentrate on insignificant individuals when the problem we face is McCain. McCain is a front burner issue where as people like Bachmann and Palin are back burners if on the stove at all.
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:03 pmMichele, sweetie — you didn’t “touch a nerve” with Matthews, although I do give you points for making him somewhat goggle-eyed with disbelief.
And Joe the Plumber didn’t “touch a nerve” with Obama, either. Obama listened to him and answered his questions as best he could with the scenario information Joe provided. Obama continued answering questions relating to his specific situation during the third debate. And his answers turned out to be right.
But there are a few questions I’d like to ask of you and your right-wing hosts:
1. When you say that Obama is “against America”, how does this differ from calling him “anti-American”?
2. Why is it that the national media has an obligation of “due diligence to check out Barack Obama” but they have no such obligation to follow up on your outrageous comments?
3. Is it really true that the reason Nancy Pelosi has such a large plane is so she can fly to Minnesota to discredit idiots? It was my understanding that she didn’t get the larger plane she asked for, but she seems to be able to discredit idiots with a smaller plane just fine.
4. Was Obama really “cavorting” with Bernadine Dohrn? Does Bill Ayers know?
5. If Obama is against everything that Americans stand for, why are there more Americans supporting him than not?
6. What, exactly, are “punishing” tax rates? Is Obama turning rich people into poor people or something?
My suggestion is that if you are so hypersensitive that you see justifiable criticism as a demand for your scalp, you should probably just keep your mouth shut. Or better yet — get out of politics altogether. You’re obviously not suited for this. If you truly have spent the last two years serving your constituency well, you should be easily cruising to re-election no matter what Pelosi or anybody else does.
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:05 pmClearly, it depends on what the definition of “is” is.

October 22nd, 2008 at 5:24 pmTo my knowledge, this is the only bill she’s introduced since taking her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives Jan. of 2007. But to even begin to catch a flavor of this (your choice of word here), you have to read the bio in Wiki.
Bachmann introduced the Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act, to repeal the nationwide phase-out of conventional light bulbs. She argues that the government has no business telling consumers what kind of light bulbs they can buy:[58] “By 2012, incandescent light bulbs will be no more,” Bachmann said. “Fluorescent bulbs are more polluting because of their mercury content. We are working on a light bulb bill. If the Democrats can hose up a light bulb, don’t trust them with the country.”
She also said, “I was just outraged that Congress would want to substitute its judgment for the judgment of the American people. It struck me as a massive Big Brother intrusion into our homes and our lives.”[59]

October 22nd, 2008 at 5:24 pmWayne: “It sounds to me like Bachmann is just another Republican who wants to take us back to the 1950s.”
Sure, let’s go back to the 50’s. Top marginal tax rate was something like 75%, GI Bill helped millions buy homes for the first time, schools and infrastructure were well-funded… something tells me conservatives longing for a return to the 50’s are thinking of a different 50’s.

Ok, now I’m really stumped. Isn’t that what we elect our members of Congress to do? When did each individual American get to decide what to do?
The Big Brother intrusion into our homes is our own government spying on us. It has nothing to do with electing representatives to represent our needs in Congress.

October 22nd, 2008 at 6:03 pmMy question to Bachmann would be – what exactly are “traditional American ideals and values?”
Can someone please explain them to me. These terms and phrases are spoken with such vigor, but rarely is there a moment when a journalist challenges the person being interviewed, by asking them to thoroughly explain what they mean by “traditional American ideals and values,” because I don’t think I even know what those are.
She speaks as if there are some collectively agreed upon, strict set of ideas and philosophies that all of America is privy to.
There is the constitution, certainly. If she can find any amendments that Obama’s proposed policies would oppose, I’d like to know what those are.
If not, she should keep her mouth shut!

October 22nd, 2008 at 7:48 pmI think the right needs to hear what comments McCain made before changing his mind or began to lie in order to fish votes from the right.
“I have never engaged in class warfare. I am very much in FAVOR of tax cuts for middle-income and lower-income Americans. I’m deeply concerned about a kind of class warfare that’s going on right now. It’s unfortunate. There’s a growing gap between the haves and have-nots in America, and that gap is growing, and it’s unfortunately divided up along ethnic lines.” McCain back in 2000

When republicans lower the taxes for the wealthy its tax relief, when Obama lowers for the vast majority of people its socialism. Elections are about branding and slogans. The right are better at campaigns than they are running the country…
Either way, McCains proposed taxcuts will sink USA deeper because of huge debt levels. Bin Ladin may get his wish if McCain wins and does something as stupid as that.

October 22nd, 2008 at 8:16 pmIn reference to a post above about the 50’s by 49erDem…
I assume the right wants to go back to the 50’s because men dominated the political and social dynamics, the creation of the urban sprawl was underway, and there seemed to be a more rigid religious base.
Oh, and even though the 15th amendment “gave them the right to vote,” blacks had a hard time actually voting due literacy tests and poll taxes. They were finally given full access to the vote in the 1960s with the passage of the 23rd amendment (abolishing poll taxes) and passage of the 1964 Voting Rights Act.
So…if the right wants to regress to the 50’s, would they be ready to face another set of decades like the 60’s and 70’s with all that this nation went through? By our collective history, we can demonstrate that any attempt to go too far in one direction will likely be corrected by a rising up of those with differing opinions.
I believe the intent of the right would actually be to cement us in the 50’s and stifle any attempt to grow beyond that point.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:25 pmIt is frustrating to no end that these right wingers simply can’t take responsibility for their own behavior and statements. Sarah Palin’s abuse of power is the fault of a partisan witchhunt, not her incredibly stupid actions. Michele Bachmann is given 13 minutes to pretty much free associate all the BS in her head, but she was “tricked” into saying stupid things. Come on. This is why they are so horrible at governance. You simply can’t learn from your mistakes if you are unable to acknowledge you made them.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:49 pmMichelle, Michelle, you want to talk about character and relationships?<
1) McCain’s self-proclaimed “proud” friendship with convicted Watergate felon and terrorist, G.GORDON LIDDY?
2) Ask McCain why in 2006 he spent his 70th birthday on the yacht of the Italian felon RAFFAELO FOLLIERI, recently imprisoned for 5 years on 14 counts of fraud worth $6,000,000 – - McCain was accompanied by campaign manager, Rick Davis…what was their meeting with Follieri for? Rumor has it, to secure the catholic vote for McCain. I’m a Catholic and it didn’t get mine.
3) Also in 2006, why did McCain, again with campaign manager, Rick Davis, meet twice with convicted Russian mobster, OLEG DERIPASKA, re some deal with a metals trading company? The governments of Israel, England, and the US accused Deripaska of international espionage and other criminal activities.
4) McCain has appointed Washington’s uber-lobbyist, WILLIAM TIMMONS, to head his presidential transition team – - but do Americans know that for 5 years after the Gulf War Timmons was a lobbyist on behalf of Saddam Hussein, helping the murderous Iraqi dictator (reason for the 7-year US/Iraq War) to avoid punitive international sanctions? Shouldn’t we be questioning McCain’s judgment on Timmons – after all, he was consorting with this “axis of evil” enemy of America when he was in his late 50’s/early 60’s..As I recall, Obama was 8 yrs old when Ayers was an activist.
5) John McCain likes to pose as someone who is against “Washington special interests and lobbyists”. Well, McCain received $1,700,000 in campaign contributions from lobbyists, compared to Obama’s $219,000, and a February 22 Washington Post article reported that “virtually every one” of McCain’s “closest advisers” “was part of the Washington lobbying culture he has long decried”, including Rick Davis, Wayne Berman, Carlos Bonilla, Acquiles Suarez, Charles Black, Nancy Pfotenfauer, Slade Gorton, Thomas Loeffler, James Couter, Christian Ferry, David Crane, Robert Aiken, Grant Aldonas, James Rill, William Timmons and Doug Goodyear.
6) BREAKING NEWS – Just announced, Freddie Mac secretly paid Republican Doug Goodyear’s consulting firm $2 million to kill legislation that would have regulated and trimmed the mortgage finance giant and its sister company, Fannie Mae, three years before the two firms collapsed! The McCain campaign hired Doug Goodyear to manage the Republican convention. The firm of Rick Davis, McCain Campaign Manager, was also paid over $3 million by Freddie & Fannie to lobby against regulation. 20 McCain Campaign staffers were Freddie/Fannie lobbyists.

7) In 2007, on Meet The Press, Tim Russert, exposed how John McCain, as head of US Senate Commerce Committee, in response to lobbying by VICKI ISEMAN, pressured the FCC to act favorably towards PAXSON COMMUNICATIONS, threatening them. McCain received $28,000 in campaign contributions from Paxson and flew four times on the Paxson jet to campaign events and spent time on Paxson’s yacht in Palm Beach. McCain denied Russert’s accusation, but old BUD PAXSON himself came out in public and confirmed McCain’s guilt. John McCain lies to the American public when pretending to be “an ethics champion, reformer and maverick”, fact is his influence was often “bought” by lobbyists?
6) Sarah Palin accuses Obama of “palling around with terrorists”, but US voters need to know more about the years John McCain has been “palling around with mobsters and organized crime”. John & Cindy’s fortune is traceable to organized crime. On 3/31/07 the Bonanno “crime” family gave $11,000 to McCain’s campaign. McCain is a big gambler and a central figure in Las Vegas and Indian Tribe casino deals? McCain, the biggest supporter in Congress of tax breaks for his casino buddies, has actually cost the US Government $326,000,000 over the past few years. 40 of the 60 lobbyists working for McCain Campaign have either lobbied/worked for gambling interests, including tribal and Las Vegas casinos, lottery companies and on-line poker dealers. And, and it is not about sensitivity to Native American reparations.
7) This is shocking, but do US voters know about the United Nations Human Rights Commission Condemnation of John McCain, and how the Dineh-Navajo were swept off lands they’d owned in Arizona since 1500 A.D. by legislations authored by Senator McCain, and their lands and the coal beneath handed over to Peabody Western Coal Group? The group, Common Cause, claims McCain received large campaign contributions from the corporations involved for his three Presidential runs, and Cindy McCain’s family liquor distribution business landed huge “payback” contracts in Las Vegas, where the Dineh-Navajo’s coal supplied lower cost power? McCain needs to be questioned and tell us the truth.
8) Although a big gambler, between 2000 – 2007, McCain reported no winnings on his tax returns. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has filed a complaint with Senate Ethics Committee and an investigation has been initiated with IRS. If McCain is found to have witheld reporting any gambling income, it is a crime.
9) In West Virginia, voters have reported Republican controlled voting fraud by machines which have been tampered with, when the voters switched the indicator for Senator Obama, kept on switching back to indicate John McCain. McCain Campaign has been grossly exaggerating the ACORN story in order to deflect attention from the real fraud that is being perpetrated at the actual point of voting NOT registration. The incorrectly filled registration forms collected by ACORN volunteers were identified by ACORN themselves and reported by them.
10) John McCain’s campaign has directed $175,000 to the firm of a Republican operative accused of massive voter registration fraud in several states. A joint committee of the McCain-Palin campaign, the RNC and the California GOP made a $175,000 payment to the group Lincoln Strategy in June for purposes of “registering voters.” The managing partner of that firm is Nathan Sproul, a renowned GOP operative who has been investigated for suppressing Democratic voter turnout, throwing away registration forms and spearheading efforts to get Ralph Nader on ballots to hinder the Democratic ticket.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:05 pmDemocrats have not blanketed the campaign, badgering the public every single day calling John McCain a fascist or Nazi or anything else based on the above decisions. Sen. Obama believes that the issues facing the nation today and thoughtful proposals for resolving those issues, with the commitment of the American public, should be the basis upon which people vote. He is probably right. But I am outraged at the plethora of Obama demonizing and just got tired of being nice. Reactionary, maybe, but I am one 70-year- old lady who decided enough was enough!
Ms. Bachmann, Exactly how does that foot taste? And does it go well with that generic slice of humble pie you are trying to serve with it? Busted, disgusted, and now you can’t be trusted.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:17 pmHey Michelle: Thanks for making Texans look smart. We have some dumb folks here, but you are a freak. Do you talk to your husband like that? I bet you know that you’d be on the curb if you did. The gutter is where you just put yourself. The curb is on the way up! Give it a shot! Your political life is DONE. Thank GOD…the decent one…not yours.

October 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 pmIt is amazing to me how these right wing nuts come out spewing their crap all over the place – and then spend days back pedaling. This one calling some members of Congress (psssst, the Democrats) anti-American – and THAT ONE down south saying liberals hate real Americans. Huh? We are Americans – all of us, even the stupid ones.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:52 pmHas anyone answered Bachmann back by pointing out that while McCain rejected (after a long time) Pastor Hagee’s endorsement, but still has yet to do the same for Reverand Rod Parsley? The man claims America was founded to destroy Islam and McCain has called him a great spiritual advisor. Are these views consistent with American values?

October 23rd, 2008 at 2:19 amMaybe the Minnesota citizens should require that their representatives have successfully completed their 4th grade Civics class.
And be able to prove it.
Et tu Michelle !
October 23rd, 2008 at 7:51 am“Otherwise the United States may be literally changed forever.”
That’s the point Congresswoman Bachmann (soon to be former Congresswoman), the people are calling for change.
