GOP lawmaker defends Bachmann: ‘Chris Matthews tried to trick her.’

In a GOP press conference today, Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN) defended Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) regarding her recent comments about Sen. Barack Obama having “anti-American” views. Echoing Bachmann’s excuse, Souder put the blame on Chris Matthews, claiming that he “tried to trick her into that question”:

SOUDER: I read the whole interview. Chris Matthews tried to trick her into that question, over and over for the entire interview. Unfortunately, her last comment, she fell for the trap. No, we shouldn’t have an investigation into Congress. They are elected by the people of the United States. I have full faith and confidence. Now, I think some of them, for example, Sen. Obama, should be careful who he pals around with.

“She was pushed into that, all you have to do is read the full interview. But she shouldn’t have fallen for the trap,” he added. Watch it:

If Bachmann was “tricked” by Matthews and walked into his “trap,” why did she again today suggest Obama has views that are “against America?”

You don’t have to try very hard to trick a moron.

  2. druidbros says:

How dare Chris Matthews ask her one of those tricky questions thingies…

  3. misshusseinmolly says:

If Chris Matthews truly did “trick” Michele Bachmann into the idiotic things she said, he must have done a heck of a good job messing with her brain, because she’s still saying them.

  4. Mr. Evil says:

I saw the interview and didn’t detect any “trick.” This is a seriously delusional and intellectually challenged woman.

  5. Mr. Evil says:

There they go again. That damn “Gotcha Media!”

  6. misshusseinmolly says:

    I miss Tim Russert.

    Heck — I miss Edward R. Murrow.

But mostly I miss politicians who are willing to step out of their comfort zone and be interviewed by people who don’t limit themselves to fawning softballs.

  7. Above the Clouds says:

Is it true the RNC pulled their money from her today? Sounds like they’re cutting her lose.

  8. Fritz says:

Does anyone have a link to Bachmann’s Democratic opposition website? I feel a need to help her rejoin the private sector. Also, is Souder’s tenure being contested?

  9. TonyC says:

Its sad how easily these Republicans can be “tricked”…

Of course, none of them are responsible for anything they do.. just ask them, they’ll tell you so.

Liberals should acknowledge that something HAS changed on Hardball. Matthews used to hammer liberals/Democrats and lob big fat softballs to conservatives/Republicans on a nightly basis. Nobody battered the Clintons and Gore around more than Matthews. In 1999, Matthews had fricking Gennifer Flowers on for an entire Hardball show talking about how Hillary Clinton was a lesbian and a murderer.

These days, I think Matthews is a little embarassed for having shilled so hard for Bush and, on top of that , seems to actually like the Democratic candidate for a change. It’s a nice turn of events for Democrats.

You know, I can’t imagine a scenario where someone could trick me into saying something that I didn’t believe deep inside over and over and over again.

Seriously, this wasn’t Steven Colbert, with clever questions and even more clever editing, this was Chris Matthews. And in watching Chris since this event happened, he cannot believe what Bachmann said, and has laughed at her several times.

I won’t say bimbo, because that would be sexist, but idiot is without a gender bias.

    Idiot!

Bimbo Bachmann repeated her anti-American charge against Obama again on Hewitt’s radio rant-fest. I guess he must have tricked her into it, too.

Meanwhile, the National Republican Congressional Committee “is pulling its media purchases from Bachmann’s race.” Her republican primary opponent has jumped back in the race as a write-in candidate. Her Democratic opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg, has collected over a million dollars in contributions. And nearly 55,000 people have signed a censure petition over the internet at http://www.censurebachmann.com.

Six days ago, Bimbo Bachmann seemed poised for an easy re-election campaign. Today, she’s in freefall.

Sometimes, there are consequences for McCarthyism.

  17. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Matthews did not “trick” her. She said that she thought Obama was anti-American, and Matthews stopped her and asked her to clarify what she said, and she repeated that she thought Obama was anti-American and then urged the media to penetratingly investigate everyone in Congress to see who’s pro-America and who’s anti-America.

  18. 49erDem says:

    missmolly: “I miss Tim Russert.”

Nobody in corporate media worked harder to sell you George Bush than Tim Russert. Nobody worked harder to convince you that Gore was a creep. No major pundit worked harder to sell the idea of Social Security privatization. No talking head EVER conducted a “debate” in the despicable manner that Russert did when he hosted the Democratic primary debate in October of last year. I’ve never witnessed anything remotely like it.

I’m sure Russert was a sweet fellow to his friends, but I do NOT miss him. I think he was one of the biggest phonies in mainstream media.

So she goes on the radio with Hugh Hewitt and some other dimwit c-list wingnut and says all the same insane McCarthyite crap all over again, and Souder, not having got the latest memo that Obama is – on second thought – INDEED antiAmerican! So he’s out there backpedaling on the original nonsense, looking like a complete idiot. Is this a national party in full meltdown or what?

I agree with you about the Democratic primary debate. And there have been plenty of times that Russert has said things that got me up out of my chair.

However, I have seen him skewer righties and lefties alike. And one thing that I appreciated him for (even though I didn’t always agree with him) is that he rarely allowed pre-packaged soundbites to stand as a sufficient answer to a question. He also didn’t have a whole lot of patience for idiocy such as Bachmann articulated. She thought Matthews was tough? Russert would have mopped the floor with her.

  33. JMOHR says:

There was no such thing as trickery. Listen to the tone of Tweety’s voice. You can hear the disbelief. The question is actually delivered in a “you really did not mean to say that” tone with a chance for Bachmann to take a step back from the line while looking minimally stupid. Indeed, anyone who had to answer the question could only conclude that they could only: (1) Note that they had overstated it a bit,(2) did not understand the question and rephrase the answer or (3) go bat shit crazy and look like a total moron.

Only a total moron would choose that third option.

  34. Above the Clouds says:

Bachmann even tried to claim she doesn’t watch Hardball. WTF? Her plight is front page top in the St. Paul paper today.

  35. tarazan says:

What an insult to viewers’ brains.!

How could Bachmann be tricked on Chris Matthews show then go later and say the same thing on Right Wing radio talk shows?

Americans saw a racist woman who was insulting other members of Congress and insulting Obama from the opposite party labeling them as un Americans or working against America, simply because they are not Republicans like her.

She showed her real skin, and now she is fighting to prove everybody who saw her MSNBC interview is wrong, and playing the victim’s part.

  36. EnnuiDivine says:

Ah, Mark Souder. Where conservative meets sadistic.

“Souder is an ardent supporter of War on Drugs. He authored and championed the Aid Elimination Penalty (also known as the Drug-Free Student Loan amendment), enacted in 1998 as part of the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. The provision suspends eligibility for federal financial aid to college students convicted of drug-related offenses. The law has thus far affected more than 200,000 students, including 9,000 Indiana students — one in every 200 applicants from that state. (This is the highest percentage of students affected among all 50 U.S. states.) In almost all cases, the suspensions of eligibility for aid are based on applicants checking a box saying that they have a drug conviction, or failing to check the box saying that they do not, rather than an actual check of criminal records. Following an amendment in 2006, only students who are enrolled in college and receiving financial aid at the time of their conviction may have their aid suspended (prior to 2006, the law was applied regardless of when a drug conviction occurred). Students may resume eligibility after a period of time (for example, after one year if convicted of possession of a controlled substance) or if they complete a drug rehabilitation program approved by the U.S. Department of Education. Before the 2006–2007 academic year, the provision could also apply to high school students, but this changed with the passage of the Deficit Reduction Act in 2001.[3]

In early 2006, Souder added, to a bill about the office of the drug czar, a provision calling for the fungus Fusarium oxysporum to be used as a biological control agent against drug crops in foreign countries. Several federal and state agencies have previously rejected such use of the fungus because it is highly prone to mutation”

missmolly: “And one thing that I appreciated him for (even though I didn’t always agree with him) is that he rarely allowed pre-packaged soundbites to stand as a sufficient answer to a question.”

We’ll have to agree to disagree about Russert. I think if you check the tape you’ll find he was far more likely to accept sound bites from republicans than dems. Think about his last debate performance with Repubs – he let McCain look him right in the eye and say, “I don’t know where you got that quote,” knowing full well that McCain had actually said he didn’t know much about economics on Russert’s own show. And, Russert just let it go. He would have come right back with a tape of the remark itself if he were grilling Hillary Clinton and you know it.

    It feels soooo freaking good!!!

  39. Tired of being lied to says:

I’ve read the versions of this story from Bachmann and her defenders, and the continual use of the “I/she-was-tricked” defense, and I’ve come to this conclusion: is this really the best thing to keep saying and putting up as a justifiable defense for operating mouth before engaging brain?

I mean, really, what you are admitting to is that you are kind of slow and/or stupid in that you can’t recognize a so called “trap” that you think has been laid out for you, and maneuver away from it. Not a real confidence builder with your constituents.

As an elected representative I think most people think you should be more alert, aware, and professional, and watch yourself so you don’t get into a foolish looking position. Or did the turnip truck just let you fall out and then kept on driving down the road?

It is one thing to say you misspoke and said something you did not mean, regret it, apologize for it, and move on. People can understand that. It is altogether different to keep on saying, “Yup, I’m kind of a stupid person and got tricked – again.”

  40. mk3872 says:

Have you noticed how, the closer we get to the election, and the more repubs realize they’re going to lose this race, the lower their level of discourse goes? THey’re now at the playground level: “You tricked me!” “That’s not fair!”

C’mon people, swallow your pride and admit defeat already.
