Hatch: The World Is Just ‘Jealous’ ‘Because We’re So Powerful And Strong’

Today on Fox News, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) denied that the America’s standing in the world has fallen under President Bush. He insisted that world opinion of the United States is as strong as ever, though he admitted that other countries “naturally” experience “jealousy” of America:

HATCH: There’s a lot of jealousy of the United States, especially in Europe, and France in particular and some of the other nations as well. So naturally they’re constantly poking holes at the United States. … Yeah there’s some irritation with the United States but mainly it’s because we’re so powerful and strong militarily and economically and otherwise.

Watch it:

Other countries aren’t jealous; they’re fed up with the cowboy presidency of George Bush. A 2007 Pew study found that “[d]istrust of the United States has intensified across the world,” with anti-Americanism deepening since 2002, especially “among America’s European allies.” In a 2008 Readers Digest poll of residents of 16 countries, only five reported higher percentages of those calling themselves “pro-American government” than those “anti-American government.”

Just five days ago, European newspapers and researchers published a study clearly documenting how damaging the Bush presidency has been to the world’s opinion of the United States:

world-opiniongraph.png

Hatch seems oblivious to how Bush’s policies have dramatically weakened the U.S. military and helped cause the financial collapse of America’s economy.

Interesting… it would appear, from the numbers in that study, that some countries, such as Mexico and the UK, have almost EXACTLY the same percentage of die-hard, bed-rock loonies in their general population – the fabled 23%ers – as we have in this country.

Some, such as Poland and Belgium, have even bigger percentages (make way for a whole new generation of Polish jokes here…) at home, and some, like France and Switzerland, have substantially smaller percentages.

  31. pete says:

One small problem there Keltoi. France has the wisdom and perspective gained by getting decimated in two world wars. They’ve also learned that, once their Empire was taken by force, they don’t miss it. Not to mention the fact that England outstripped her naval power early in the 19th century which reduced her stature tremendously.

Make fun of their, admittedly, unusual politics all you wish; France has largely abandoned the hubris of Imperialism and the yoke of superstition. As a nuclear power their borders are secure and the rest of the world is more valuable as a trading partner than a possession. They are older, and wiser, than we are. Alas,we residents of the United States are all to eager to discount the lessons others have learned.

  32. pete says:

Charles DeGaulle had good reason to “counter” us. Much like Iraq, we refused to leave until we were good and ready and tried to dictate to them. Jealous? Why?

They’ve got the bomb so we can’t blackmail them. In fact, we have had almost no success in forcing France to adopt our more radical foreign policy or influence their foreign policy.

  33. impeachcheneythenbush says:

Keltoi – you’ve obviously never been to France, have you? When last over there, those I spoke to were primarily concerned with American citizens’s access to information and saw us as endangered by an impending dictatorship. That was back in May of 2004, before the second term of Bush. Your argument seems to be they are jealous of the U.S. because they are an old has-been empire, while we are the NEW empire. These are a people who saw what the drive for empire can result in, and they saw it not only for their own country, but in Europe when Germany decided to become the NEW empire. They also know that empire destroys itself in the end.

Study: McCain gets more negative coverage than Obama
By Peter St. Onge | Charlotte Observer

John McCain is getting more negative media coverage than Barack Obama, according to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center.

The study, released Wednesday, examined 2,412 campaign stories from 48 news outlets during the six weeks from the end of the conventions through the final presidential debate.

The results: While the candidates are receiving equal amounts of coverage, 59% of stories about McCain were “decidedly negative in nature,” while only 14% were positive.

Obama hasn’t exactly been fawned over by media, but the coverage statistically has been more evenhanded, with 36% of stories clearly positive, 35% neutral or mixed, and 29% negative.

The authors note that the most positive stories on Obama were about politics, rather than policy — stories like polling, the electoral map, and tactics. [...]

Thanks, you MSM morons. Watch Mccain get a bump in the polls from this study.

    Just great.

I think the Brits ARE jealous of us, but the psychology is different. They are Mom, France is Big Brother who let us sleep on the couch when Mom was pissed. Then Mom forgave us, we got super-rich, Big Brother got his ass whipped in a couple bar fights and we had to save him. And BTW, Mussolini proclaimed his reign a return to the Empire. Simple, basic human psychology is at the root of what moves nations, and it transcends decades, even centuries. It is kinda neat when you think about it.

    pete Says:
One small problem there Keltoi. France has the wisdom and perspective gained by getting decimated in two world wars.

You place a very high price on wisdom, Pete!

They’ve also learned that, once their Empire was taken by force, they don’t miss it. Not to mention the fact that England outstripped her naval power early in the 19th century which reduced her stature tremendously.

Waterloo and the Congress of Vienna were more instrumental than the RN, but the former made the latter possible, along with an obscure genius by the name of Arthur Wellesly.

I agree with much of what you say; pain is the price of wisdom, both for men and for nations. I am 41. I feel much wiser than when I was 31. But do I envy the strength and vitality of my 31 year old self? Yes. Would I trade it? Doesn’t matter, I can’t. So obviously, the wise answer of the aged is that wisdom trumps strength. The young and strong make little effort to understand the old and wise.

    pete Says:
Charles DeGaulle had good reason to “counter” us. Much like Iraq, we refused to leave until we were good and ready and tried to dictate to them. Jealous? Why?

Well, they should take a deep Le Breath and calm themselves. How can you come to a site like THIS, which has flourished in the last 8 years, and feel like the G. is denying us information, hmmm?

They also know that empire destroys itself in the end.

Indeed it does. Our time will come. Have you ever been to the Forum Romanum? That will be the Mall in Washington one day. It is inevitable.

By the way, when was that world survey done that indicated that those surveyed considered GW Bush more dangerous to world peace than OBL? Is that “jealousy” too, Keltoi? Hatch?

No, I would call that stupidity, actually.

  43. pete says:

Let them whine about “negative coverage” and “attacks”. It should eventually dawn on all but the bottom 20% that the coverage is truthful. It’s only “negative” because the GOP candidates, and shills, keep saying ridiculous bullcrap. It’s not “negative” to question the validity of claims, assertions, contradictions and facts that don’t add up. And it’s not an “attack” to point to lies and abuses.

The point that, if justice is served, will get across is that there isn’t any good news about the GOP candidates and there isn’t much bad about the Dems. Ultimately, I think our “collective individualism(LOL)” will allow rational people to realize that capability is more important than ideology.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it often: I have some concerns about giving the Dems a super-duper majority and I have minor concerns about the practicality of some of Sen. Obama’s ideas.

I am gravely concerned that Sen McCain would accelerate the demise of this country by following his stated ideas and those of the people he’s beholden to. And I wouldn’t trust his running mate to find her way out of a wet paper sack with a chainsaw. I don’t think that either, in their own way, is remotely capable of fulfilling the obligations of the Offices for which they run. They both have taken the path of being reckless radicals, lacking in judgment and patience.

Senators Obama and Biden have both displayed superior fitness for the jobs. I may disagree with a few details, and a very few ideals, regarding the plans of Senators Obama and Biden but, I am 100% certain that they are both fit to serve; intellectually, temperamentally, and ethically. They are so superior to their adversaries that I find it ridiculous that these facts are being disputed at all.

  67. pbg says:

They may have been jealous. But if they were jealous they’d have been jealous since 1950.
In 1999 hostility to America was a minority opinion, lightly held. Now, towards the government, it’s universal.
We first became a world power, not because we fought in World War I,but because were stayed out of it so long. While the then Great Powers killed off an entire generation of their young men, we went in in 1918 and out in 1919. And when World War II was over, our factories were all still standing. We helped win the war by tremendous historic effort: but our postwar prosperity was due to the measure by which we stayed out of it.
Frankly, since WWII, our military track record has been pretty poor. Korea? dragged yo an ugly stalemate. Vietnam? Miserable failure. Lebanon? Miserable failure. First Gulf War? Success. Somalia? Miserable failure. Kosovo? success. Afghanistan? ugly stalemate. Iraq? Miserable failure.
Where do we get the idea we’re military titans?
Our successes–WWi and II, the Gulf, Kosovo–were done in partnership in strong alliances. When we arrogantly go it alone, we fail. And we won the Cold War by not fighting.
France, Germany and Britain know that they ceded powere to the US because they destroyed each other–not because of any mystic virtue of the US. Russia’s postwar competition was hamstrung by tyranny, yes–but also by losing men and women on a level we cannot even dream of, and the destruction of much of their country.
And now these countries, having learned their bitter lesson and fallen because of it, are looking at America as it ignores that lesson and gets redy to empire itself into second-class status.
We’re already much of the way there.

The irony is that all this “elite” bashing here at home is the product of jealousy and sour grapes.

  71. Otranto says:

As a Belgian, I was shocked by those poll numbers … so I did a bit of digging. Cause those can simply not be true.

    1. The poll was done by Le Soir. Which is a Walloon newspaper in the French speaking part of Belgium. Newscoverage on the American Elections and the American politics in general is far more present in the Dutch speaking part… and I can tell you, America ain’t doing that good from our perspective.

    2. There is an amendment at the end of the poll!!!!! “This article was amended on Tuesday October 21 2008. A graphic showing the results of a poll on how the US is viewed around the world reversed the findings for Belgium. We stated that 39% of Belgians polled said their opinion of the US had changed for the worse since the start of the Bush presidency, and 52% said it had changed for the better. Those figures should have been the other way round.”

So please, we’re not as bad as Poland :D

    Keltoi at Night Says:

Yeah its ridiculous and NO France was NOT a military leader of the west for centuries that is ludicrous. England kicked their butts regularly. Are you giving us a lesson in condescension by telling us about Greece and Rome or a lesson in idiocy by making ludicrous statements that we would have to be morons to take seriously?

  75. ElBruce says:

#74, thanks. I was thinking “what the hell is wrong with Belgium?!?”
