As a Belgian, I was shocked by those poll numbers … so I did a bit of digging. Cause those can simply not be true.

1. The poll was done by Le Soir. Which is a Walloon newspaper in the French speaking part of Belgium. Newscoverage on the American Elections and the American politics in general is far more present in the Dutch speaking part… and I can tell you, America ain’t doing that good from our perspective.

2. There is an amendment at the end of the poll!!!!! “This article was amended on Tuesday October 21 2008. A graphic showing the results of a poll on how the US is viewed around the world reversed the findings for Belgium. We stated that 39% of Belgians polled said their opinion of the US had changed for the worse since the start of the Bush presidency, and 52% said it had changed for the better. Those figures should have been the other way round.”

So please, we’re not as bad as Poland :D

They may have been jealous. But if they were jealous they’d have been jealous since 1950.
In 1999 hostility to America was a minority opinion, lightly held. Now, towards the government, it’s universal.
We first became a world power, not because we fought in World War I,but because were stayed out of it so long. While the then Great Powers killed off an entire generation of their young men, we went in in 1918 and out in 1919. And when World War II was over, our factories were all still standing. We helped win the war by tremendous historic effort: but our postwar prosperity was due to the measure by which we stayed out of it.
Frankly, since WWII, our military track record has been pretty poor. Korea? dragged yo an ugly stalemate. Vietnam? Miserable failure. Lebanon? Miserable failure. First Gulf War? Success. Somalia? Miserable failure. Kosovo? success. Afghanistan? ugly stalemate. Iraq? Miserable failure.
Where do we get the idea we’re military titans?
Our successes–WWi and II, the Gulf, Kosovo–were done in partnership in strong alliances. When we arrogantly go it alone, we fail. And we won the Cold War by not fighting.
France, Germany and Britain know that they ceded powere to the US because they destroyed each other–not because of any mystic virtue of the US. Russia’s postwar competition was hamstrung by tyranny, yes–but also by losing men and women on a level we cannot even dream of, and the destruction of much of their country.
And now these countries, having learned their bitter lesson and fallen because of it, are looking at America as it ignores that lesson and gets redy to empire itself into second-class status.
We’re already much of the way there.

Hatch must be blind and naive? Thanks to the Bushites we are in a position of weakness in dealing with world affairs. Our military is stretched dangerously thin, we are in debt with Communist China and our economy is on the verge of collapsing.
Hatch should have added that the world hates us because of our freedom too. Idiot!

Polls about which country is most dangerous for world peace usually have the same result in Europe; the U.S. LEADS ahead of Russia and the ‘axis of evil’ remains.
