During an interview this afternoon with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), a reporter from local Washington, D.C. area CBS affiliate told McCain that some “commentators” and even some “personal friends” have asked, “Where is the John McCain from 2000?” The reporter then asked, “Did that guy go away? Has something changed?” But McCain took issue with the premise of the reporter’s question, claiming that nothing has changed since 2000:
MCCAIN: You’ll have to tell me what’s changed. I love it when they say, “Oh McCain has changed.” And I say, “What have I changed on?” They can’t name a single issue or they’ll name an issue and its false. I’m the same guy. I’m proud of our campaign.
Watch it:
In fact, ThinkProgress has identified at least 44 issues that McCain has flip-flopped on, including President Bush’s tax cuts, comprehensive immigration reform and torture.
Oh dear. McCain shouldntna oughtna hadntna done that!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:50 pmMcCain: You ‘can’t name a single issue’ I’ve flip-flopped on since 2000.»

October 22nd, 2008 at 9:53 pmMcCain: You ‘can’t name a single issue’ I’ve flip-flopped on since 2000.
You're absolutely correct , sir............
Because there's about 25 of them...........

Here are 10 more.
Here's yet another 76.

October 22nd, 2008 at 10:10 pmOoh - can I? Can I? Please, John, can I?
I'm starting to get really irritated every time I see him lie so blatantly. These journalists, reporters, anchors and such should challenge him on things like this with facts, so that we can all watch him squirm.

October 22nd, 2008 at 10:16 pmI wonder what the media's conclusions will be, after McCain loses?
As with the run up to the war, their roles in the whole affair will be seen by themselves as secondary, to the club-footed campaign that McCain ran. This media dogpile seems calculated to distract from their own horrible performances in the primaries. Would Obama have faced a stronger opponent, if McCain's media groupies hadn't shaded the race with innuendo?
Perhaps their love of the maverick is what doomed the republicans to lose.
Time will tell.
Now, back to the bar...
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:17 pmHe said the same thing on "The View" yet know one
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:23 pmchallenged him on the three obvious ones that TP
has above. Taxes, immergration, and torture???
I think some repugs are trying to say he has changed since 2000. He's same old liar to me.
It's like trying to make raygun a hero.
Now flip-flopping is another issue...Oh wait, it's an old issue.
repugs do the flip-flop by nature.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:24 pmalzheimers.
gotta be alzheimers.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:25 pmNot alzheimers. He just thinks that his base is so stupid they'll believe anything he says, and the delusional part is that he thinks his base is more than 22% of the population. "Look over there! Shiny!"
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:27 pm* McCain supported the drilling moratorium; now he’s against it.
* McCain strongly opposes a windfall-tax on oil company profits. Three weeks earlier, he was perfectly comfortable with the idea.
* McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.
* McCain defended “privatizing” Social Security. Now he says he’s against privatization (though he actually still supports it.)
Wait, I’m not done with the last two weeks yet….
* McCain wanted to change the Republican Party platform to protect abortion rights in cases of rape and incest. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain thought the estate tax was perfectly fair. Now he believes the opposite.
* He opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects. When the Supreme Court reached the same conclusion, he called it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”
* McCain said he would “not impose a litmus test on any nominee.” He used to promise the opposite.
And these come after these other reversals from April and May:
* McCain believes the telecoms should be forced to explain their role in the administration’s warrantless surveillance program as a condition for retroactive immunity. He used to believe the opposite.
* McCain supported storing spent nuclear fuel at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain supported moving “towards normalization of relations” with Cuba. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Hamas. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Syria. Now he believes the opposite.
* He argued the NRA should not have a role in the Republican Party’s policy making. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain supported his own lobbying-reform legislation from 1997. Now he doesn’t.
* He wanted political support from radical televangelists like John Hagee and Rod Parsley. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain supported the Lieberman/Warner legislation to combat global warming. Now he doesn’t.
And these are the flip-flops I’ve noticed earlier:
* McCain pledged in February 2008 that he would not, under any circumstances, raise taxes. Specifically, McCain was asked if he is a “‘read my lips’ candidate, no new taxes, no matter what?” referring to George H.W. Bush’s 1988 pledge. “No new taxes,” McCain responded. Two weeks later, McCain said, “I’m not making a ‘read my lips’ statement, in that I will not raise taxes.”
* McCain is both for and against a “rogue state rollback” as a focus of his foreign policy vision.
* McCain says he considered and did not consider joining John Kerry’s Democratic ticket in 2004.
* In 1998, he championed raising cigarette taxes to fund programs to cut underage smoking, insisting that it would prevent illnesses and provide resources for public health programs. Now, McCain opposes a $0.61-per-pack tax increase, won’t commit to supporting a regulation bill he’s co-sponsoring, and has hired Philip Morris’ former lobbyist as his senior campaign adviser.
* McCain has changed his economic worldview on multiple occasions.
* McCain has changed his mind about a long-term U.S. military presence in Iraq on multiple occasions.
* McCain is both for and against attacking Barack Obama over his former pastor at his former church.
* McCain believes Americans are both better and worse off than they were before Bush took office.
* McCain is both for and against earmarks for Arizona.
* McCain believes his endorsement from radical televangelist John Hagee was both a good and bad idea.
* McCain’s first mortgage plan was premised on the notion that homeowners facing foreclosure shouldn’t be “rewarded” for acting “irresponsibly.” His second mortgage plan took largely the opposite position.
* McCain vowed, if elected, to balance the federal budget by the end of his first term. Soon after, he decided he would no longer even try to reach that goal.
* In February 2008, McCain reversed course on prohibiting waterboarding.
* McCain used to champion the Law of the Sea convention, even volunteering to testify on the treaty’s behalf before a Senate committee. Now he opposes it.
* McCain was a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to illegal immigrants’ kids who graduate from high school. Now he’s against it.
* On immigration policy in general, McCain announced in February 2008 that he would vote against his own legislation.
* In 2006, McCain sponsored legislation to require grassroots lobbying coalitions to reveal their financial donors. In 2007, after receiving “feedback” on the proposal, McCain told far-right activist groups that he opposes his own measure.
* McCain said before the war in Iraq, “We will win this conflict. We will win it easily.” Four years later, McCain said he knew all along that the war in Iraq war was “probably going to be long and hard and tough.”
* McCain said he was the “greatest critic” of Rumsfeld’s failed Iraq policy. In December 2003, McCain praised the same strategy as “a mission accomplished.” In March 2004, he said, “I’m confident we’re on the right course.” In December 2005, he said, “Overall, I think a year from now, we will have made a fair amount of progress if we stay the course.”
* McCain went from saying he would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade to saying the exact opposite.
* McCain went from saying gay marriage should be allowed, to saying gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed.
* McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as “an agent of intolerance” in 2002, but then decided to cozy up to the man who said Americans “deserved” the 9/11 attacks.
* McCain used to oppose Bush’s tax cuts for the very wealthy, but he reversed course in February.
* On a related note, he said 2005 that he opposed the tax cuts because they were “too tilted to the wealthy.” By 2007, he denied ever having said this, and insisted he opposed the cuts because of increased government spending.
* In 2000, McCain accused Texas businessmen Sam and Charles Wyly of being corrupt, spending “dirty money” to help finance Bush’s presidential campaign. McCain not only filed a complaint against the Wylys for allegedly violating campaign finance law, he also lashed out at them publicly. In April, McCain reached out to the Wylys for support.
* McCain supported a major campaign-finance reform measure that bore his name. In June 2007, he abandoned his own legislation.
* McCain opposed a holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., before he supported it.
* McCain was against presidential candidates campaigning at Bob Jones University before he was for it.
* McCain was anti-ethanol. Now he’s pro-ethanol.
* McCain was both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag.
* McCain decided in 2000 that he didn’t want anything to do with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, believing he “would taint the image of the ‘Straight Talk Express.’” Kissinger is now the Honorary Co-Chair for his presidential campaign in New York.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:27 pmThe ultimate McNumbNuts flip-flop will occur on November 5 at about 9:00 p.m. when Mrs. Palin goes from "the greatest VP candidate in history" to "that airhead who lost the election for me".
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:32 pmWhat a fool! There are only two conclusions you can draw from his statement.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:36 pm1) either he hasn't changed and he's ALWAYS been a lily-livered, two-faced, two-timing, pandering, sleazy, senile schmuck or
2) he HAS changed and has become such a lily-livered, two-faced, two-timing, pandering, sleazy, senile schmuck that he won't admit it.
Dr. Hussein Matt Come on now you are twisting his words.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 pmHe ment that he has the same pair of flip flops he had
in 2000. He dares you to prove otherwise.

October 22nd, 2008 at 10:44 pmRight, cuz there ain't just a SINGLE thing you've flipped on, dork.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:44 pmDam, Dam, Dam!!!! I've been wanting to comment all freaking day particularly on our fabulous congress woman Michele Bachmann.
You see, I work for an evil, non-profit, life sucking, communist, socialist, naziparty, hate-mongering organization. So obviously I can't comment from work (lest I will somehow reveal my evil Un-American ways as a tax exempted individual). Each and everyday, our mission becomes more stretched as we try to meet the need of our community.
What a busy, busy day we had! We attempted to help two moms with 8 chidren between them find affordable housing, we helped 15 people be warm and get them minimal clothing after their unregulated apartment building had just burned down. We helped two moms in getting a few diapers until someone can get paid, we gave out three gas vouchers so that *those people* who make your kid's McNuggets can get to their minimum wage job. Oh, and we helped 5 people complete orders for protection so they can get away from their abusers. In *real* *rural* Minnesota, this is our typical day.
I've been helping REAL American's navigate through the Sh*t Hole that is our social service delivery system. And I'm mad as h*ll and I'm not sure how much more I can take. It's getting worse every freaking day and you McCain Trolls that read this blog, you need to understand, real people who pay real taxes are HURTING. You morons want a campaign promise? Look no further than the working poor. MORONS! Go to hell McCain/Palin.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:45 pmLucky for McC that he was facing Derek McGinty, who was unprepared to challenge him. To those of us who've seen Derek here in DC, this comes as no surprise.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:47 pmDamn, Trixie. Tell us how you really feel!
Bravo!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:48 pmTrixie #23--I just want to thank you for all that you do and let you know that I appreciate you and everyone like you who work so hard for others. PLEASE TRY TO FEEL BETTER. You make me want to cry but GOD BLESS YOU, because without people like you what would these people and myself do?
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU :)
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:01 pmI'm on a rant, so please forgive me. It's been one of the most trying days ever.
Explain to me *pro-lifers* what is it EXACTLY that you intend to do to help those mothers who have chosen life? Were you THERE at my office today calming their fears? Were you there offering them a safe and secure place to live? Were you there giving them snacks and working out safety plans with them?
I'm not saying that these mothers should have aborted their children but what I am asking is, "what supports do we have in place to assist poor FAMILIES in raising their children?" Why, after a child is born, does his or her mother and/or father have to BEG for necessities? Why is health care and adequate nutrition a privalege and not a right? If you all care so darn much about *life*, why don't your policies promote these fundamental needs?
Why Congresswoman Bachmann and Governor Palin, Why?

TRIXIE--IT'S NOT FAIR AND THAT'S WHY I AND MY FAMILY, ESPECIALLY MY OLDEST DAUGHTER, ARE WORKING SO HARD THIS CAMPAIGN
I CAN NOT EXPRESS MY THANKS TO YOU ENOUGH FOR ALL YOU DO
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:08 pmThe one thing that is so overwhelmingly obvious from this campaign is that the rethuglicans are not in the 21st century. They do not understand technology well enough to know that when they say something, they are recorded and posted on the internet. They cannot go to the next town and say something different. These morons are still in the stagecoach days. They are way behind the eight ball. What a bunch of lying losers McSame and Failin' Palin are.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:09 pmIn 2000 John McCain seemed like a rather likable intelligent somewhat moderate Republican. Today he is a bitter, ugly, angry old man, and I am not saying "ugly" about his looks, its about the person he is inside.
If he can sit there and say he is proud of his campaign, there's something really wrong inside of him.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:12 pmThanks Lone Voice & Zooey.........I appreciate your support. It's been a very hard day for those of us who work in a small corner of Minnesota. The saddest thing is those who just don't get it. They've bought into "McCain is a war hero" and "Palin is (OMG this is for real) 'spunky'.
We need change so bad. Unfortunately, the people who need change the worst are the least able to recognize it. They're still buying into the "oh. big daddy, pleae protect me" meme.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:17 pmSenility in eight years is the likely cause. I do see the signs of the onset of dementia and I am not kidding, which is scary. My stepdad's mother was like this in the beginning of her mental decline.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:17 pmAnd the sad thing is that the guy interviewing him let him get away with it.
It is very discouraging what has happened to our fourth estate. I sure hope there is some way we can turn it around.
Watching Rachel Maddow tonight I realized that she frequently exposes dumb things the Democrats do and particular democrats do like Murtha, Kerry and I forget who the other one who were spouting their mouths off and getting the Democrats in trouble. She nailed them all.
But the best thing about Rachel's show tonight was watching Pat Buchanan completely lose it. He was practically spitting he was so angry. And Rachel just sat there and shook her head. It was one of the few times I didn't fast forward through Buchanan because I really enjoyed seeing him lose it. He is the personification of what and where the Republicans are today.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:19 pmTrixie, I hope you feel better, I really do. Cyberhug :)
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:22 pmOH, snot, Trixie, you made me cry. Wish I could help more but I'm afraid I'm rather on the end of those that need help than on the helping end. See, that's the thing with Repug's, they've never been there so they just don't get it and probably never will. We just have to keep plugging away and doing what we can to make our corner of the world a little better.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pmGonna go watch some Colbert. Night all
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:35 pmThanks "lone voice" it's been a day.....but we're all benifitting from ALL of the jobs the Bush Administration has created. Way To Go George!!!!! Wooooo Hooooooo
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:44 pmThat's the thing, we can ALL make it better. It doesn't matter where you are on the socio-economic scale. We are better as AMERICANS is we can join together as AMERICANS.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 pmTrixie here's a poem for ya. My grandmother taught it to me.
Smile
The thing that goes the farthest
Toward making life worth while
It cost the least
And does the most
It's just a pleasant smile
The smile that bubbles from the heart
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:51 pmSo pure and effervescent
It's worth a million dollars
But it doesn't cost a cent
Thanks Lurker...that's a lovely prose. We smile. But honestly, how far does a smile go? We can smile and say, "sorry, but your need doesn't meet the mission of our program" or "sorry, we haven't had enough diapers of your child's size donated to our program".
BTW, just so you all know, most peole LOVE to donate infant items but we sorely lack in toddler stuff (diapers size 4-6 & any size pull-ups) and clothing over size 24 months. MOST people truly need YOUR help in larger sizes. So please, if you're thinking of donating items, think about the bigger kids. And just an afterthought, ALL non-profits are tax exempt so a gift of money, designated however you want, goes far further since we can purchase necessities far chearper than you can. I know TPer's have incredibly big hearts so please, check with the non-profit you're looking to contibute to to see what they need.
October 23rd, 2008 at 12:12 amThis GOP twosome is so bad, so stupid and so self-destructive, that almost seems that the Democrats have seized control of their minds and forced them into making their endless bonehead moves...
October 23rd, 2008 at 12:21 amDementia has set in!
October 23rd, 2008 at 12:26 amPLEASE, DONATE TO YOU LOCAL DOMESTIC ABUSE & SEXUAL ASSAULT PROGRAMS. Most of these programs are based in very small towns and help everyone in the community. All services are free and confidential. We help your communities in more ways than you know.

As I told someone else on my blog, don't make absolute statements(none of those thing are true, all the time I supported, nobody believes, etc) because they are so easy to prove false. McCain knows well he has changed his positions, and I think politicians do that sometimes, and that's OK. But don't act like you've never done it.

Holy freakin' crap!
October 23rd, 2008 at 1:44 amThere's something wrong with McCain, and I can't put my finger on it either. It's almost like he's become a borg, from the Star Trek franchise. Every once and awhile, his programming goes screwy, like at today's rally when he said Obama's spokespeople were calling West PA folks "rednecks," and then said "I couldn't agree more with them." Or when he said "My fellow prisoners" in another rally. It's just plain wierd. And then this claim, about never having flip-flopped on any issues from 8 years ago, when it's clearly and easily shown that he certainly has.

Its just John being his usually mavericky self.
You betcha.
He has always been a petty, shallow opportunist.
October 23rd, 2008 at 2:14 amLook at his record.
He is playboy senator who spouts BS to the voters in Arizona and they are fooled into voting him back into office every time.
McCain's observed modus operandi is to puff up and deny. He growls and attempts to intimidate questioners into the feltal position. Ask him one thing he'll poo poo the question or use his favorite trick of changing the subject and moving right on. Now ya see him now ya don't. The guy is slippery. His nasty campaign has had nothing to do with the issues. He has recently started sounding more like he was interested in what was going on but he knows he's going to be defeated. So he's loosened up. But the wordsmanship, the crafting of words is a highly developed art on his part. He says one thing but means another. He thinks we're stupid and that we won't get it. He wants to sound like he knows what he's doing but it's shadow boxing and it's nonsense. By the way, why is he "hall monitoring" Palin? She can't speak on her own? Pretty pathetic...maybe she's working on memorizing some newspaper and book names and when she gets 'em right, McShame will let her do a real interview on her own. Thank you Katie Couric! Nice outfit Sarah...shop at Wal-Mart much?!!

October 23rd, 2008 at 8:31 amIf the pro-lifer's are so against abortion and want the mothers to keep the kid(s), why can't they just drop their kids off at crazy bachmann's or any other raving lifer?
Why are religious wackos for the death penalty but against abortion? By their twisted logic, isn't it 'killing' both ways?
