RNC spends twice as much on makeup for McCain than Palin.

mccain-makeup.gifPolitico reports today that the Republican National Committee spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup for Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) in September — in addition to the more than $150,000 the RNC has spent on clothing and accessories for Palin. AMERICAblog points out the amount is just half of what the RNC spends on makeup for Sen. John McCain: The RNC shelled out $8,672.55 for McCain’s makeup in September, employing celebrity makeup artist Tifanie White.

The RNC spends a lot of money making up everything...

  2. Dave C Says:

It's hard to make near-dead look good. They settle for angry & curmudgeonly.

  3. Shayne Says:

I saw one picture of McCain's scar without the makeup and knew that they were spending more to cover that up than John Edwards was paying for a haircut.

  4. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Yeah, but it still not as much as Fox spends on Hannity.

  5. Uncle Ho Says:

Talk about putting lipstick on a (fascist) pig.

OT- Someone broke into my car yesterday and left a pair of Detroit Lions tickets.

    clusterphuckTim: flagged on prior thread.

  6. Bluegene Says:

McCain doesn't wear makeup. Like Tom Brokaw, they just hang him by the ankles and dip him in a vat of wax. Republicans like the look.

  7. Hemlock for Gadflies Says:

The best part of this story of how the RNC spent $150K in September alone on Palin's Heartland-Values, Hockey-Mom wardrobe (purchased at suspiciously "cosmopolitan" vendors like Saks and Bloomingdale's, which seem awfully "New Yorky" for jes a lil' lady from 'Laska) is that the per capita annual income for the Red States (2007 income in all states won by Bush in 2004) is $33K.

So Palin's most ardent supporters -- those most opposed to the Obama elitism -- earn in one year a mere 1/5 what she spent on clothes in a month.

But, but, John Edwards was supposed to be the guy to make fun of for hair cuts and personal grooming!! Now we have to make fun of the wrinkly old man? Would you people make up your minds??! ;)

    ________

Ha... you lucky they didn't leave a pair of Detroit Lions...

  12. 5th Estate Says:

Well, that still has to be less than Rudy Giuliani spent on hair and makeup and gowns and accessories.

  13. Uncle Ho Says:

TROS; You're right. I really should count my blessings.(:-D)

  14. paleolib Says:

The RNC should seek a refund. He still looks awful.

Uncle Ho: OT- Someone broke into my car yesterday and left a pair of Detroit Lions tickets.

    This makes no sense.

Unless someone expects you to use those tickets so they know you'll be out of the house on that date at that time so you can be burglarized.

  16. avchavis Says:

This is too funny! What a waste of money! McCain is always talking about wasteful spending - what a hypocrite! He should know that no amount of makeup is going to help him! His smile is just creepy as heck!

  17. tarazan Says:

Didn't McCain say that he is going to catch Ben Ladin?

May be this is part of his disguise scheme to do it.

  18. conniptionfit Says:

OT- sorry guys, I have to repost what I said downstairs:
Seriously?? 1 million dollars to Bachman’s opponent?? How i hell does THAT happen?? Hey, I live in the district formerly known as Tancredo’s district (colorado 6th), and no matter what stupid stuff he said or did his opponents never raised that kind of money- and Tancredo was WAY stupider and more racist than Bachman! Now we’ve got this terrific guy (Hank Eng) running, and his Republican opponent is Mike Coffman- maybe you’ve been hearing of him? He’s our Colorado Secretary of State, and is responsible for rejecting tens of thousands of new voter registrations, because he instructed registrators that if the voter doesn’t have his ID on him when he registers that he can simply put down his last 4 digits of his Soc. Sec. number, but he doesn’t have to check the box next to it that says he doesn’t HAVE a Driver’s license. Once the forms were turned in Coffman began rejecting all the forms that had a Soc Sec number, without the little box check. Of course we have no exact numbers, but it’s in the thousands- and we do know that new Democratic registrations are out numbering Republican 4 to 1. So why don’t we send some of that excess love to Hank- surely Tinkenberg has enough by now?

Did anyone see Tom Brokaw and Bob Schieffer on Larry King the other night? Schieffer had enough makeup on to make Katherine Harris blush. That boy must look pretty sick up close.

  22. katy Says:

the RNC is sooo getting ripped off...

and, nieman marcus??? i can't even afford to window shop there!

    how elitist!

  23. liberal traitor Says:

So McCain is the new Breck Girl?

Well, ok, just as long as he doesn't "slather it on like a trollop-cvnt"

  24. misshusseinmolly Says:

I'm sure that Tifanie White does her best with what she's got, but McCain still looks like a Madame Tussaud's wax figure on camera.

It's not unusual for someone with a noticeable blemish or scar to want that covered up (I understand Gorbachev not only liked to have that birthmark of his covered by make-up, but also retouched out of photographs). But what I don't understand is McCain wanting to cover up a scar that he must have received as a result of his Vietnam experiences? I'd think he'd want to wear that proudly.

  25. 5th Estate Says:

Uncle Ho... let me explain the setup:

"Damn my cars been broken into! Wait a minute! The stupid SOB's accidentally left to game-tickets behind. Hah Ha! Well this will compensate me for the break-in. I'm definitely going to the game!"

So while you are off at the game, your house gets ripped off, more than compensating for the cost of the tickets.

  26. A Patriot Acting Says:

My sister is a certified mortuary beautician. I bet she could do a better and cheaper job at re-animating Johnny McCryptkeeper than some celebrity make-up artist!

  27. vat694848 Says:

It looks like the back-room at CSI is slapping lipstick on this Presidential pig?

  28. 5th Estate Says:

Seriously Uncle Ho, you aren;t really thinking of using those tickets are you? If they are genuine, sell them.

The old scam was having you car stolen and then it showing up a couple of hours later with an apologetic note claiming some kind of emergency and tickets to something by way of compensation.

May be an urban myth of course...

  29. Zimzone Says:

No matter how much they spend or do, it's not working.

McCain looks like Uncle Fester, regardless of the amount of makeup they put on him.

  30. Uncle Ho Says:

5th Estate; lighten up. It was ONLY a joke.

  31. deebaser Says:

  36. pluege Says:

Wow, that would great if the MSM goes all John Edwards $400 haircut on Big Liar John mccain and pork barrel palin. If it happens it'll be the first time ever for republicans.

  37. Zimzone Says:

    conniptionfit,
My source for that $1 million figure was this morning's MN Public Radio; as good a source as we have up 'here'.

Sunday saw about $650,000, yesterday was $840,000 and this morning it broke the million mark.

I love Bachman's opponents name; Elwin Tinklberg. Sounds 'elfish', eh?

Anyway, sounds like Colorado has a rotten fish in the tank with your former Sec/State. It also sounds way too familiar to other RNC scams suppressing the vote.

It's time to create another 'reality' for Republicans...one that finds them in a permanent minority with ample amounts of sunlight pumped up their fat asses.

  38. daveincolorado Says:

How the hell do you spend $8 million on make up??!!! in one month?? Would this be an on-going taxpayer funded expense if he should somehow manage to cheat this election in his favor? Could we ask for our money back if it is?

  39. Xisithrus Says:

I think thats 8 thousand month dave.

  40. tokin librul Says:

"How the hell do you spend $8 million on make up??!!! in one month??

  41. daveincolorado Says:

sorry - I misread the numbers - old brain. But even $8K is a whole lot of money for pancake on an old wrinkly guy.

  42. Marie Says:

They gotta do what they gotta do -- makeup will at least conceal some of the effects of age and skin cancer on his face, so they pay high fees for such services. Unfortunately, they cannot conceal his thought processes, his ideological ideas, his inability to relate to the average person and his personality of the cranky old man who yells at kids to "get off my lawn!"

  43. Xisithrus Says:

Still, thats alot of makeup, 266$ a day, 8k a month. 96k a year. Which is way more than min wage earners make and far above the poverty level.

  44. misshusseinmolly Says:

I could live more comfortably than I do now, if my monthly pay was what the RNC spends each month on hair and makeup for Sarah Palin. I could live twice as comfortably if it was what they spend on McCain. And if I got what gets spent on clothing, I could afford a nice new car and a sizeable down payment on a house.

And they b!tch about haircuts for John Edwards - the cost of which came out of his own pocket.

This is all fine and good -- the Republicans can use their campaign money any way they wish -- but if McCain and Palin are trying to convince America that they are just like us, why is it necessary to spend so much money to make them look anything but?

  45. Marie Says:

Let's see, $150,000+ for Palin's makeup, hair and clothing.
    $9,000 for McCain's makeup.

Is this the same party who endlessly mocked $400 for John Edwards' haircut?

  46. Arctic Ghetto Says:

A pound of putty, a bowl of flour, and the old guy can shake around on stage for hours.

  47. Xisithrus Says:

Only elitists would spend 4k to 8k a month on makeup.

Gotta love that ol’ regular guy, Scranton Joe Biden. How does he manage to look so young? He, Bruce Jenner and Kenny Rodgers truly are blessed! The balding look that he rocked in the 70s has gone out of style. Good thing he decided to grow it all back!
    __________________________________________________________

Hey, as long as he's not growing it all back with my campaign contributions, he can do whatever he wants.

I would love to see how much of the Obama campaign funds are being used for clothing, make-up, and hair for both Obama and Biden. I would bet the figure is less than for the McPalin team.

  50. katy Says:

oh, and THANKS! politico, for that story, for checking out the palin makeover... i've been wondering about that...

yesterday, a story on C&L linked - unwittingly, and i hate that -
to the weekly standard... but what a pleasant su-prise to see the cover with caribou barbie in my favorite dress of hers!

    taaa-cky!

  52. Mary Poplins Says:

I could sure use that $8,000. We could pay our car off or I could buy a new Sewing Machine.

The people that donate money to the Republican Party should be outraged. This woman spending $150,000 for clothes. I would be very upset if I would of donate to their party. The $150,000 we could pay our house off. Just think all that money could help the people with their mortgage or health insurance or medication.

The money that Obama has raised for TV and Radio ads could help alot of people too.

There is to much money in this years election.

    I am a Obama supporter.

    GO OBAmA GO!!!!!!!

  55. texaslady Says:

Barbara Walters this a.m. made a good point that "a few black skirts with different jackets would work on the campaign trail." Kind of working two roads, crying about poor Joe the plumber and spending $150,000 TAXPAYER money for flashy outfits. Really, Neiman Marcus ? Guess couldn't find enough bling at Macy's. People should be outraged.

  56. jb Says:

    What a girly man.

  57. texaslady Says:

Mary Poplins- Mccain is using taxpayer money for his campaign so it is your dollars for palin's wardrobe. Obama is using contributed money, people sent in willingly for him to use as he sees fit. You are absolutely right, $150,000 would pay off Joe's mortgage. So, vote for maccain and watch how your hard earned money will be used. Bet AIG people are repubs, what do you think. $400,000 of OUR money for a week at a resort/spa.

  58. stewarjt Says:

  59. Shayne Says:

McCain still makes a big deal about Obama not taking public funding for his campaign like he did. But that $150k came from the RNC, private funding I'd bet. That's why Obama decided to fund his campaign with small donations because the RNC always gets this big money from corporations. Perhaps somebody on the news should call McCain on this crap the next time he mentions it.

    Mary Poplins Says:

The money that Obama has raised for TV and Radio ads could help alot of people too.

There is to much money in this years election.

The difference is this is the the little guys' money. And we keep donating it to make sure we keep the thugs out of the White House. People like me who donate know there's already a lot of money. But Obama being President will help a lot more people than McCain would.

  62. tarazan Says:

Sarah is scaring the public to death that Obama is after the few bucks left in Joe the plumber's pockets, and by that Obama is starting Socialism in America; "Joe said that"..she said. But Sarah is enjoying herself shopping expensive clothes using GOP donor's money to sell her empty messages.

  63. Shayne Says:

Sure texaslady but it's great because they're claiming that Palin is going to donate her wardrobe to charity after the election. And if you believe that I have a bridge to nowhere in Alaska for you to fund.

  64. 49erDem Says:

The reason the makeup bill is so big is that they need professionals to cover up that huge cheek-sized bandage on McCain's left side. It's like a prostetic cheek. They probably need about as much time as artists needed to make Ron Perlman look like Hellboy.

  65. tarazan Says:

America needs more than just showing expensive clothes and nice make up by a candidate.
America badly needs a good leadership.

  66. marlow Says:

Maybe they should start with a dry wall finisher to give poor Tifanie something to work with.

  68. hussein toasterhead Says:

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just replace John McCain with a CGI version of himself?

I mean, his entire campaign has already been programmed by the neocon wing of the RNC - why not the candidate, too?

  69. Uncle Ho Says:

    Matt Millem? EEEEEWWWWWW!

  70. Great Frybread King Says:

All that makeup is to make St. McCain look like he is still alive and not some undead zombie with a tumor growing out of his face!

  76. ucsbclassics53 Says:

Hell, we know that Senator McCain and Governor Palin are truly one of us. Hell, I spent $8672.55 on books just yesterday and I'm sure that we all have $8672.55 to blow away on petty things. Besides, this just shows how ELITIST Obama truly is, because he doesn't need to spend this much to look presidential.

McCain/Palin: such candidates of the people that they HAVE to spend this much to keep up with the Obamas...
    /sarcasm

  77. tombaker Says:

  78. RUCerious Says:

  79. DallasNE Says:

So how much of this spending spree on narcissism are considered gifts and subject to taxation? I know the hauling the kids around was not reported by Palin as income though many tax experts conclude otherwise. This is well beyond the "customary" threshold one would think.

  80. RUCerious Says:

    "Dead Candidate Walking"!

  81. GL2814 Says:

Reminds me of the movie Death Becomes Her, when Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep's dead characters convince Bruce Willis' undertaker character to make them look beautiful!

  82. MapleStreet Says:

Remember the complaints of John Edwards and his hair cut ? How the repugs ran ads criticizing that ?

Can we see an ad: John McCain flies in a special makeup artist who spends 3 hours making him presentable. And still you can see his evil smirk through the makeup.

  83. SP Biloxi Says:

"RNC spends twice as much on makeup for McCain than Palin."

    Gee, ya think?

  84. T R L Says:

    Well its to make him
feel pretty oh so pretty to make him feel and witty and gay????????

  85. nwmuse Says:

Actually, I think it was the other way around..

    From the Washington Post:

McCain’s September payments of $8,672.55 to “American Idol” make-up artist Tifanie White, who has also worked on the reality dance show “So You Think You Can Dance,” are a drop in the bucket on the campaign’s beautification front compared to the GOP vice presidential nominee.

The Sleuth has learned that Palin’s high-paid traveling make-up artist is Amy Strozzi, who was nominated for an Emmy Award for her work as head of makeup on “So You Think You Can Dance.” Strozzi was paid $13,200 by the McCain-Palin campaign last month alone, according to the campaign’s latest financial disclosure report filed this week.
