McCain Disagrees With Palin: VP Is Not ‘Part Of Both Legislative And Executive Branch’

mccain-cheney.gifYesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) gave an exclusive interview to the Washington Times, in which he stepped up his criticism of President Bush. McCain said he wouldn’t continue Bush’s use of signing statements, and claimed to disagree with Cheney’s view of his role as Vice President:

Q: He’s made some expansive claims of executive power and you’ve talked a little about this. What specifically would you roll back of those claims?

MCCAIN: I certainly wouldn’t have these signing statements. … I think the signing statements was not a correct, um, implementation of the power of the executives. I think it was overstepping. [...]

Q: You’ve seen some of the claims of privilege that he’s made as well–

M: Yeah I don’t agree with that either. And I don’t agree with Dick Cheney’s allegation that he’s part of both legislative and executive branch.

Listen here:

Has McCain shared his view of the Vice President’s role with his own VP pick? Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) refused to say whether she thinks the Vice President is part of both the executive and legislative branches, as the Hill reported in Septmeber:

[A] spokesman for the Republican presidential campaign did not answer the question. Instead, he e-mailed remarks Palin gave at a campaign rally in Golden, Colo., on Monday. Palin did not say what branch of government she believes the vice president’s office is part of in those remarks.

In fact, Palin seems to think the Vice President plays a major role in the legislative branch. In an interview this week, she made the extraordinary claim that the VP is “in charge of the U.S. Senate.” During the vice presidential debate that she declared she was “thankful the Constitution would allow a bit more authority given to the Vice President also if that Vice President so chose to exert it in working with the Senate.”

McCain seems completely unaware that his own VP pick consistently reveals a “worldview” nearly perfectly in line with Dick Cheney.

Oh, we can just trust those two reformers to write their own job descriptions.

Didn’t your God tell you not to do so ?

Whoa – McCain is disagreeing with Dick Cheney?

    Doesn’t that make him anti-American?

  4. Shayne says:

McCain needs to go on Chris Mathews’s show. Mathews is apoplectic about Palin’s claims that she is in charge of the Senate and can help form policy. I’d pay to see Mathews asking McCain about that.

  5. spencers mom says:

I’m confused… who now speaks for the McCain campaign?

Would it be SarDickah ChePaliney? It’s hilarious watching this whole thing unravel. McCain will be staring into space, drooling, by November 5th.

    PEACE

Here’s a questions for McCain, “Have you ever told this to Dick Cheney in person?”.

What worries me is that this is still a race….

It’s apparent that McCain has read the Constitution. It’s equally apparent that Sarah hasn’t.

But look at it this way — McCain said once that he wouldn’t mind having Cheney as a running mate. Looks like he got his wish.

  9. Jackie says:

Sarah has gotten to where she is with sex, flirtying and acting like a bimbo. But be aware very aware Sarah has her own mission and it’s called the 25th Amendment. Yes in Sarah’s speeches she often calls herself President and there’s a reason she doen’t know what the VP’s job is. She knows McCain’s health is really bad and First Dude/Sarah have their own plan for the White House take over. Don’t look for Cindy McCain to step in to stop it. Sarah doesn’t read and hss learned for the best liars/criminals in the Republican Party namely Ted Stevens.

Is there any chance we could write a Constitutional Amendment that calls for candidates to hold, at least, one press conference and be able to describe the office they are running for in one paragraph or less?

The Mooney-owned Washington Times. Let’s not forget that.

    Let’s make this easy.

    Dear John,

Please provide a list, if any, of the policies that you and Sarah do agree on.

That will change as soon as he is in front of a different crowd, like everything else that comes out of his mouth, ‘Cause he’s mavericky, don’cha know, you betcha!’.

What worries me is that this is still a race….

What worries me more is that there are people out there actually stupid enough to vote for him in this country to get it close enough they can steal it again.

I mean come on, this country (s)elected George “Hoover” Bush, twice for f_ck’s sake.

  20. DaTruth says:

Yeah you have the Pat Robertsons telling you don’t vote for Obama because he’s black or because his middle name is Hussein. Is that a good reason to vote for McCain and ‘Caribou Barbie’ Palin. Those two can’t get their acts together going into election day. How can I vote for such TRASH! Come on!
What is truly pinning this country is all the bigotry and racism that has all scattered and divided.
With all the screwups Bush has made these last 8yrs there shouldn’t even be a republican party around!

  21. Shayne says:

Right now Palin is in Ohio insulting both Biden for his speeches and Obama for being inexperienced in foreign policy and only being talented at rhetorical flourishes. Like she even knows what that means. I won’t be happy until that byatch is impeached as governor of Alaska.

  22. Shayne says:

Please TRoS, Cheney can’t go duck hunting, that’s too much like work. He was quail hunting on a ranch where they clip the wings of the birds so they can’t fly and there’s a fence around the property so they can’t run away. It’s like plucking goldfish out of a bowl.

  23. Constant Weader says:

Ali’s sharp post provides just one more indication of what a McCain-Palin Administration would look like — fractious, incoherent & chaotic as the Palins jousted for more power. A good deal of this interview sounds like McCain pushing back not so much on Bush but on his own campaign. Sounds to me like he’s channeling the Hillary Clinton campaign — bashing Republicans, bashing Obama with false charges & ignoring whatever his brash running-mate [Sarah Palin/Bill Clinton] says.) Links to the interview & to Ali’s post on http://www.realitychex.com along with other stories & opinions on the presidential race.

Do we detect some discord in McIIIrd’s campaign>?

It’s what you get for listening to your lobbyist/campaign (chuckle) strategists, Davis and Schmidt.

But, did he mention whether he’ll restore the Bill of Rights, too?

  27. kirkaracha says:

….he fact is that I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I have been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.

    John McCain

The president and I agree on most issues. There was a recent study that showed that I voted with the president over 90% of the time–higher than a lot of of my, even Republican colleagues.

    John McCain

  28. KayInMaine says:

Yep. Sarah Palin is Dick Cheney in drag. No doubt about it.
