North Carolina Republicans send out homophobic mailings against Democratic Senate candidate Kay Hagan.

The North Carolina Republican State Executive Committee has sent out homophobic mailers targeting Senate candidate Kay Hagan (D), who is challenging Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R). The mailings warn that Hagan seeks to advance a “radical homosexual agenda” that includes legalizing gay marriage, removing “Under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance, and forcing the Boy Scouts to accept gay and atheist troop leaders.

Yglesias wonders how these priorities represent a “radical homosexual agenda”: “What, exactly, is the gay interest in removing ‘under God’ from the Pledge of Allegiance?”

There is no “gay” interest in removing “under God” from the Pledge of Allegience.

It was the conservative’s that altered the original Pledge to INJECT religion into patriotism.

    Marriage equality is pro-American.

I’ve said this before and, regretfully, I’ll probably say this again. I married my high school sweetheart in 1978. If gay marriage had been legal in 1978, I’d have married my high school sweetheart. If I hadn’t married her and gay marriage was legal now, I’d probably seek her out and marry her again. Marrriage is supposed to be about love and, as the song says, the heart calls and the mind obeys.

“What, exactly, is the gay interest in removing ‘under God’ from the Pledge of Allegiance?”

Could it be breaking the stranglehold that many theocrats have on our government? So-called “religious” conservatives have stood in the way of every movement for social progress in the history of this country.

Quite frankly, adorning our currency and public buildings with “In God We Trust” is blasphemy. No self-respecting monotheist would ever have done such a thing. Besides, if it were really important then it would have been on our currency from the beginning; it wasn’t. If it were really important, it would have been in the Pledge from the beginning, but it wasn’t.

The addition of the words “In God We Trust” was part of the Cold War hysteria that gripped Americans for generations. It should be removed from all US currency and from any public building, anywhere that it appears.

I don’t need for the government to believe in God nor to try to carry out “God’s will” on my behalf. Jesus himself said to “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and unto God what is God’s.” Seems pretty clear to me.

But I don’t expect it to have a widespread impact. The undecided voters here are far more concerned about the economy, the shipping of manufacturing jobs overseas (many textile and furniture manufacturing plants hhere in NC have closed), and the safety of their loved ones overseas fighting our wars (did I mention that Ft. Bragg and Camp Lejeune are in our state, and we have a lot of military families?).

It’s a bit tough to get all worked up about a couple of guys getting married when one is worried about their own livelihood.

I predict the biggest ripple this will cause is the backlash against Dole and the GOP.

Will the “gay thing” have an actual widespread impact? No.

You should expect it to be part of the narrative, however, that explains why Obama was leading in the polls but so many NC voters decided, at the last minute, to change their minds and vote McCain.

Part of it will be explained away by the Bradley Effect, part of it will be explained away by “values voters,” and of course it will have nothing whatsoever to do with Republican operatives like Mike Connell hacking electronic machines or tampering with ballots or any other sort of election fraud.

Mark my words. This is exactly what will happen when McCain pulls off an unbelievable upset in two weeks.

What hurts American families more? Lets compare:

    1. Good paying jobs shipped overseas so CEO’s can gorge themselves with more money. Hurts families.
    2. Stock market manipulated by speculators so oil companies can gorge themselves with more money. Hurts families.
    3. Iraq war started so Cheney/Bush and PNAC cabal could steal Iraq’s oil resources for themselves and their allies so they could monopolize the oil revenue and gorge themselves with more money. Hurts families (especially those whose family members died as a result, Iraqi and American).
    4. Lobbyists gorge themselves with more money from large corporate and private interests that buy politicians so as to facilitate said interests ability through continuous deregulation to gorge themselves with more money. Hurts families (deregulation promotes get-rich-quick schemes which circumvents legitimate stock trading and when stocks tank jobs and money are lost).
    5. Unscrupulous lenders flim-flam people into ARM’s then sell them quickly to gorge themselves with money. Hurts families (when rate is increased and income is stagnant they can’t pay and lose their home to foreclosure).
    6. Insurance companies deny coverage to a suffering patient with life threatening malady so they can continue to gorge themselves with more money. Hurts families (how a human being can deny coverage for treatment that may save the patient’s life is reprehensible).
    7. Infrastructure not properly maintained and/or upgraded on a timely basis because republicans want continuous war so their personal war-profiteers can continue to gorge themselves with more money. Hurts families (This could not only provide thousands of jobs but, also helps provide better safety for all during their travels).
    8. Pharmaceutical companies don’t want to offer cures because once a recipiant is cured they no longer need pharmaceutical companies products. Big Pharma only wants managed care to treat the ailment so the recipiant has to pay for life so the pharmaceutical companies can gorge themselves with more money. Hurts families (What would you rather see, a cured father that can work and function with his children or one that has to swallow 10-20 pills a day just to stay alive?).
    9. Two gay people want to show their devotion to each other for life. Hurts whom?

Daryll, why are you not on the bandwagon for a constitutional amendment to BAN DIVORCE? I think the forces behind these mailers are counting on a “Gasp! Oh no! TEH GAY!” reaction from the recipients — enough to blind them to the reality that U.S. Senators (the job that Hagan and Dole are competing for) do NOT have anything to do with North Carolina state constitutional amendments.

As far as removing the words “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance — this has nothing to do with homosexuality, and the Pledge got along just fine without those words up until 1954, when they were added. Although there are many Americans who believe that the “founding fathers” wrote it that way — including one of our candidates for VP.

And last — about the Boy Scouts. Last I heard, they are a private organization, and as such can determine who gets to be a Scoutmaster and who doesn’t. It’s only if they receive federal money that it becomes important that they don’t violate the civil rights of others by discriminating against them. Oh, and as a side note — almost every time I read about a child molester in the paper, it’s a heterosexual church-going man. There appears to be less to fear with gays and atheists.

This mailing just appears to be a collection of warmed over leftover wedge issues that are already past their expiration date. Just more desperate flailing by someone who’s drowning.

What’s more, you don’t seem to know very much about North Carolina either. The people who live in NC haven’t had any representation in the US Senate since Johnny Edwards left. Liddy Dole was never anything more than a reliable rubberstamp for the chimp administration, and as such, she’s part of the problem.

With any luck, the people of North Carolina will pull the chain on Dole and regain partial representation in the US Senate by electing Kay Hagen on Nov. 4th.

Thanks for being accurate in this statement. It is true that the Bible does not record that Jesus said anything directly about homosexuality.

The Bible does mention that not everything Jesus did or said was recorded, and the Bible does say, in Matthew 19, that the Creator intended that a man and a woman would be “one flesh” in marriage.

Jesus makes endorses this union in Matthew 19.

He, Christ, gave an answer to the divorce question that was bigger than the question. He reasoned from the most general view to a specific question. He answered the question with reference to what the Creator intended.

bit doesn’t have to read Jesus’ mind. His words are in the Bible.

bit doesn’t care to read your mind.

According to the Bible, Jesus died about 2000 years ago. Also according to the Bible three days after His death, He was raised from the dead and continues to live. The importance of the event is expressed in John 3:16.

    bit’s understanding includes this:

    Acts 2 verses 37 and 38

Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”

Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

    http://bibleresources.bible.com/passagesearchresults.php?passage1=Acts+2&version=49

    That word “Repent,” that’s repentance.

    What’s your understanding include?

Exactly MORON his words are in the bible and NONE OF THEM are about homosexuality. His answer about marriage had NOTHING to do with homsexuality as much as you WISH your spin made sense. You CANT read his mind therefore YOU putting YOUR spin and interpretation on what he said means NOTHING. You keep SAYING that everything Jesus said is not in the bible that is fine but unless you can read his mind that doesnt mean YOU get to tell us what he MEANT that he didnt SAY in the bible. This is really pretty simple.

More evidence of so-called Christians doing the opposite of what Jesus would have done. These faux Christians really don’t understand Jesus at all; they just listen to the hatred spewed by their radical right-wing evangelical “leaders”. Jesus: love, cherish & respect everyone. Right-wing radical evangelicals: no one matters but our church & our “religion”; we want to deny everyone else their human rights; in essence, we hate them.

Snip: “Marriage takes work and practice, and that is why gays will never get it right. How can they hope to compete with the knowledge earned by doing? With the expertise gained by Rush Limbaugh and his three sacred marriages? Newt Gingrich and his two sacred marriages? Ronald Reagan, John McCain, Prince Charles, Rudy Giuliani, all pillars of society and all married over and over to hone the sanctity and commitment necessary to maintain the bedrock of a society, marriage between a man and several women. Nowhere does the Bible say marriage is between a man and a man trapped in a woman’s body. And as long as the President of the United States is sworn in with his hand on a Bible instead of on the Constitution, then we must make sure the Bible protects the Constitution. Besides, Billy Bob Thornton, Elizabeth Taylor, and Angelina Jolie took up sixteen marriages between them. We don’t have any extra.

I love Elayne Boosler’s comedy, and this just makes me appreciate her even more!

I agree. It’s such a non-issue. The only threat to “traditional marriages” are the multi-married “anti-gay-marraige” folks.

When these people can’t keep their first marriage from falling apart, they rush off to marriage number two.

When they can’t keep their second marriage from falling apart, they rush off to marriage number three.

When they can’t keep their third marriage from falling apart, they rush off to marriage number four.

    Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat. . . . .

Yup, that is the ONLY threat to (supposed) “traditional marriage” available, but these people try to bring up wedge issues because they have nothing else to do with their lives. Except search for the next marriage. . . . . .

  99. Lora says:

    Democrat Soldier,
I agree it’s a good article. However, to set the record straight (no pun intended): Newt Gingrich is actually on marriage #3. He famously told his first wife he wanted a divorce while she was recuperating in the hospital from a cancer operation. He was cheating on wife #2 with one of his female staffers, while trying to get Bill Clinton impeached for an extramartial blow job. He has since divorced wife #2 and married his staffer/mistress.
I really love Republiscum family values, don’t you?
