Allen on Macaca incident: ‘I should have never called him anything but yellow shirt.’

allen.jpgIn 2006, then-Sen. George Allen (R-VA) seriously damaged his re-election campaign when he was caught on video disparaging a young Indian-American as “macaca.” “This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is. He’s with my opponent,” Allen told a crowd of supporters. Asked about the incident while speaking in Florida yesterday, Allen said that he “screwed up” and “should have never called him anything but yellow shirt“:

“I screwed up,” Allen said. “It wasn’t an intentional thing, if I had any idea that they’d make such an issue out of a non-existing word … I should have never called him anything but yellow shirt.”

Allen continues to claim that macaca was “a non-existing word,” but the fact is that macaca was a pejorative epithet that existed before Allen used it.

“I screwed up,” Allen said. “It wasn’t an intentional thing…”

    It just comes so naturally.

  2. rald84 says:

before he lost, allen was a contender for the GOP nomination. same thing needs to happen to palin, she needs to be defeated for re-election in 2010 so she won’t have a chance to run for president in 2012.

  3. Uncle Ho says:

Poor George, this will be his lasting moment of shame–forever.

  4. marlow says:

No George, you dropped your pants and showed the world the cut of your…., and the world was not impressed.

George is such an idiot. Only the other George comes close.

  7. joe cantwell says:

    george allen,

    what’s he doing now?

    ?

  8. Keith says:

Allen said, “Let’s give a welcome to macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia.”

Mr. Sidarth was born in Fairfax County, Virginia and lived there his entire life!

  9. Buckie Boy says:

When Republicans show their true colors it is pretty ugly.

Maybe carve an “O” in your forehead and say a “Big, Scary Black Man” did it, that is sure work for you George.

  10. jpopphan says:

    Liar! Liar!! Liar!!!

Allen knew EXACLY what macaca meant when he used the term. He just expected that the rest of us wouldn’t.

    Stupid is as stupid does.

    Redskin Coach’s Son says:

“Yellow shirt” alone had that Native American sound and would be disparaging enough.

  12. stateofthedivision says:

Here’s the irony, “Yellow Shirt” was a graduate student at the University of Virginia, George Allen’s alma mater.

How would founder Thomas Jefferson have responded to George’s disparaging remark to a fellow Wahoo?

  13. stateofthedivision says:

As a nonexistent word, has anyone said “macaca” while speaking in tongues?

Maybe Sarah Palin can enlighten us, during her upcoming press conference.

  14. Bob says:

The good thing is that he wasn’t re-elected. That shows that most people in that district don’t agree with his racism.

  15. DidHeJustSayThat says:

In upside down backwards crazy word Allen is being completely honest.

I mean the historical track record of racism in the family aside, Allen doesn’t see the differences between “real” West Virginians and N****rs, I mean West Virginians.

The shame of it all. The half apology half excuse model of escaping responsibility has to end. Full out apologies work so much better in the end.

  16. vinylspear says:

If he were to publicly commit Harri Karri, I would forgive him.

  18. lurker says:

Perhaps he didn’t know the word, but was insulting
him anyway by saying “My caca?”

  19. pablito says:

Why has this racist not been marginalized to the point that his comments are no longer recorded or attended to? No one gives a shit what this bastard thinks.

  20. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Now Mr. Allen wants to call him a “yellow shirt” instead of “macaca?” Is he trying to start another racist controversy? Many Republicans just can’t seem to keep their little feet out of their big mouths in 2008…

As I recall the blogs traced the use of the word “macaca” back to Mr. Allen’s mother, who grew up in French colonial north Africa, where the word was used as a racial slang by colonials.

Sure enough, wikipedia says the following: “Macaca means “monkey” and is commonly understood as a racial slur; it is generally used in francophone African nations, which led to speculation that Allen may have heard the epithet from his mother,[39] a Francophone who grew up in French-colonial Tunisia.”

The best thing that racist Republicans such as Mr. Allen could do, would be to “shut TF up.”

  21. DRxJ says:

Riiiiiiight! And Mark Furhman shouldn’t have been recorded using the “N” word.

Just because you shouldn’t have been using a racist term, does not resolve you of being a racist!

  22. kasinca says:

George, you should have never been in the Senate in the first place. Nuff said.

Hope to see you at StopDog!

  24. ElBruce says:

Just waiting to find out that “yellow shirt” is another little-known racial epithet. Knowing Allen, he’s probably betting nobody’s heard of that one.

  25. Robt says:

Looks like Allen’s bitterness for his feeling of superiority of race that he only thinks he should have called the guy something else demoralizing?

Many republicans have been showing this ugly childish harmful manner in which they look and judge other Americans.

  26. EugeneDebs says:

We will just ignore Allens obvious lie about a racist slur being a non existant word and go directly to what REALLY happened. We get it Allen, you are sorry that you let your inner racist out for a spin and it turns out people just didnt like him. We all know that is the real you. A racist piece of garbage who feels contempt for those who are not white like you. What a putz
