Apple comes out against Prop. 8.

By Amanda Terkel on Oct 24th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Apple comes out against Prop. 8.

Today, Apple publicly announced its opposition to the marriage equality ban in California:

applerainbow.gif Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.

Last month, Google also took the unusual step of coming out against the measure. Support the No on 8 movement here.

UpdateSaddleback Church pastor Rick Warren announced he is supporting the gay marriage ban.

    Well their computers still suck...

    And the software? LOL!

  2. Above the Clouds Says:

I like Apple's progressive computers, operating system, "software," and their politics as well as their support for progressive causes. (message sent with power from a Mac computer)

proud apple user here, also a google-holic
i wonder if yahoo or msn have taken stands?

  6. Zooey Says:

Apple "comes out" against Prop 8.

    Good one, Amanda. ;)

  7. margerine Says:

I doubt MSN would have its own stand separate from that of Microsoft. I haven't heard anything from either, though.

  8. Shin Gallon Says:

Gay Apple user here, and I'm glad they're doing this.

  9. RandomChaos Says:

Being that Google and Apple are California Companies right here in my neck-o-the-woods. I don't think you will see anything from Microsoft or its affiliates since they are mainly based in Washington. Yahoo has been pretty schizoid as of late, but being from here as well I hope they join with Google and Apple in taking the correct stand.

  10. Coloradan Says:

Good for Apple. And while $100K isn't chump change, I wish they would have taken it higher as a means to shame the rest of Silicon Valley into action.

  11. Lora Says:

I have just voted against it, too, on my Absentee Ballot.

    the guy's just smarmy-ish........
    ...

i still have my original rainbow apple sticker from my first mac on my 93 corolla wagon... and the white apple from this latest mac next to it... there'll be a third soon, hopefully...

  13. pbg Says:

Yes, those rainbow Mac Logos have a nice new meaning today...
And the Mormon Church is probably compositing their TV ads on Macs.
(After all, Microsoft made their 'I'm a PC' ads on 'em.)
    Moof!

It's good to see companies takinga stand on this issue. The pro Prop. 8 has reallt been distorting what the proposition is about. There's a guy on my block with a sign that says "Prop. 8 equals religious freedom." Of course, if my religion says that it's ok for gays to marry, then Prop. 8 is not reflecting my religious freedom. http://straighttalkonmccain.blogspot.com/

Well, being a PC and Mac user, I say good for them....( I like pcs more)

  16. AcePilot101 Says:

Gays have always had full democratic rights. I am speaking of white homosexuals, of course. Black and Lesbian homosexuals were discriminated against on the basis of race and gender, not sexual preference.

  17. EtherealStrife Says:

Props to apple and google for taking a stand.

Warren is a power-hungry lunatic who will say anything and do anything to advance his own interests.

  18. Marie Says:

This ridiculous proposition would never have been put on the ballot if it were not for the influx of great sums of money from the Mormons and other rightwing religious groups who inexplicably claim that marriage of same-sex couples somehow affects the sanctity of their own heterosexual marriages.

Of course Rick Warren would be opposed to it.
I am reading a book now that takes place in medieval times -- the portrayal of customs and superstitions is not unlike the religious fundamentalism I see around me today.

  19. Brain From Planet Arous Says:

Apple - Unix BSD (OSX) runs rings around Microsoft Vista hyped garbage, and has more more solid backing than Linux. Except for lagging behind a bit in Green disposal, Apple has always been a true Progressive company. Well, except for the idiotic use of AT&T in the iphone instead of T-Mobile.

  20. fletc3her Says:

I want to thank Apple for doing this. it is easy for corporations to remain on the sidelines. As their statement says, this is a civil right issue, not a political issue. If we cannot all support the basic civil rights of others then we are in deep trouble.

Just imagine. A group of bigots trying to take away peoples right to get married. It makes me sick to my stomach just thinking that something like this can happen today.

  21. fletc3her Says:

Microsoft has been a big supporter of legislation in Washington State to provide rights to domestic partners. They have felt a lot of pressure from right wing hate groups for their stance.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You have lost your mind. Think maybe Matthew Sheppard ran into a little discrimination? How about the people fired from their jobs or evicted from their apartments for being gay. Think that MIGHT be considered discrimination? No homosexuals have NOT always had full democratic rights.

  23. suziq Says:

Anyone who claims to live by the Ten Commandments should vote NO on 8!!

I am a straight female, registered independant, non-religous microsoft user.
