Fox VP: Hate crime hoax means McCain’s campaign is ‘over, forever linked to race-baiting.’

drudgetodd.jpgFollowing the Drudge Report’s lead yesterday, news organizations picked up the story of a McCain campaign volunteer in Pittsburgh named Ashley Todd, who said that a black man mugged her, sexually assaulted her, and scratched a “B” into her cheek because she had a McCain bumper sticker on her car. The police quickly pointed out “inconsistencies” in her story. Todd has now confessed that she made up the story. On his blog yesterday, Fox News Executive VP John Moody, who is a Pittsburgh native, wrote that the incident’s credibility was inextricably tied to McCain’s campaign:

This incident could become a watershed event in the 11 days before the election.

If Ms. Todd’s allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee.

If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.

For Pittsburgh, a city that has done so much to shape American history over the centuries, another moment of truth is at hand.

Yesterday, before Todd had confessed, the McCain campaign put out a statement about the incident, saying, “We’re shaken up by this. It’s sick and disgusting.”

Update Greg Sargent details the McCain campaigns involvement in this story.

this is what i was talking about.. the lady claimed some big, scary darkie beat her and carved a backwards “B” into her cheek with a 5 inch knife after seeing her mccain bumper sticker.

i saw the picture…she had a black eye that did not look bad enough to have come from a blow my a 6 foot 6 black man, and the “B” carved on her cheek was just a scratch that didnt even look like it had drawn blood. also, the angle of the alleged cuts (actually scratches) didnt look like something which could be accomplished easily while holding someone down…the B was very well formed which would be unliked if someone was struggling in the least, and also the angle required to make a backwards B wouuld have been very impractical, especially for a right handed person..

You would think that the McCain campaign would have learned by now to keep their mouth’s shut long enough to vet people who present themselves as a GOP story. Apparently the liar, Joe the Plumber, didn’t teach them anything, did it.

  9. Zimzone says:

Republicans have been mugging American citizens for 8 years now.

Larry King had Michael Moore on last night. Moore featured the ‘Plumbers for Obama’, who do low labor cost work for low income & needy people.

Meanwhile, McCain’s ‘Joe the Plumber’ isn’t a plumber, isn’t registered to vote, has a questionable record but is being used as a pawn to diss Obama.

McCain is as angry & mean as Sairhead is completely stupid.

And, she wasn’t even original. Morton Downey Jr tried this same tactic years ago, saying he was attacked in a mens room by a bunch of skin heads who cut his hair, beat him, and carved (or wrote in ink) swastikas on his head.

We hear bad things about Democrats and bad things about Republicans. Unfortunately for the Republicans most of the bad things we hear about them are true. Not many heard about Democrats are true.

The Republicans are intentionally creating a divisive and hate filled atmosphere in an attempt to interfere with Obama’s effectiveness as President. What’s good for us is that they underestimate Obama’s ability to heal and bring people together. I also don’t get why they are doing it. The Republican party is pretty much marginalized now. Imagine what is going to happen if racial incidents increase and skinheads start attacking people. The Republicans are going to be blamed. There is no upside to what they are doing.

I am very sad that some good people may end up getting hurt because of the hate and divisiveness they Republicans are causing.

That was what I thought, CJ. I was shocked when I saw her picture — and the backwards B. No one stays still while someone is trying to hold them down and carve their face — she would have had more severe injuries, and no perfect B. And if a guy is angry or crazy enough to do something like that, he’s going to do a “good” job of it.

Every single media outlet who trumpeted this crap on a whim should be required to issue retraction, explanation, and apology for the same amount of time/space that they used to promote it, or be shut down (yeah, of course not, but that’s what I’d like to see).

Ms. Todd should not be treated leniently or with deference of any kind. She willfully and knowingly attempted to incite, on a national level (and knowingly so) racial hatred. This was also an attempt to unlawfully influence a presidental election (by influencing voters through racial fears and hatred). How can I say it was political as well as racial? well, it was a big, scary black man that did it, and “when he saw the McCain sticker” on her car…. that is why it is racial and political, and that she worked for the McCAin campaign says that the campaign should also be investigated: did she act on her own, was she encouraged, and what is the McCain campaign’s response NOW? Give the maximum sentence for all the crimes involved here (not just filing a false report — this is MORE than that). She can get psychiatric help once she is incarcerated.

  77. CageyCretin says:

And, hey, you want to lunge into the national spotlight, join Joe the Plumber and let’s vet her history. If the repug response is that she was a mole, then vet her — her history will show it (unless they are going to claim that she was indoctinated at birth and trained all her life for this one moment… and then screwed it up). If she’s a secret democrat but acting all crazy to bring down the (losing) republican party — prove it. Vet her. Let’s see the proof: it will be there if they’re right (and of course they are wrong, and the truth is that this was probably suggested by someone in the McCain campaign, though she is probably just enough of a sheeple that she will take the fall, whatever that might be).

  78. Game of Life says:

  79. Media Weasel says:

Anyone could have seen her “injuries” were fake. That’s no black eye for a start- and she refused medical help (which would have exposed her pathtic injuries for the lies they were).

What it goes to show though is how completely removed McCain is from the concept of pre-vetting anyone or anything. Palin. Joe the Plumber. Miss Todd of the dark grey eye shadow.

So – when can we expect McCain and Palin to gracefully withdraw and concede – and thereby bypass the Republican attempts to disenfranchise half of America. (I won’t hold my breath ..)

  80. impeachcheneythenbush says:

What this young girl did is reprehensible, and also illegal (filing a false report). She probably will be punished appropriately for it, unless they plead mental illness of something. But really…for Moody at Fox to say it would either end Obama’s or McCain’s bid for the presidency is plain stupid. Yes…it’s true that the RNC and the McCain campaign really pushed this alleged incident as though it were true. But I doubt if it would change any minds…only reinforce the minds of those who wouldn’t vote for a black guy in the first place. It won’t hurt McCain directly either, except as one more example of dirty politics…the same we’ve been seeing from the Republicans for years now.

My bottom line read on this is this kid’s lame attempt to get her own “15 minutes of fame,” and join Joe the Plumber in the news cycle.

Probably had a friend do it, or it was makeup. This is not a hospital or police photo: she refused ANY treatment, and the police reported that they took no photos. It was noted, because in less than 24 hours this photo was all over the internet… how convenient. But, again, she refused ALL medical help and the police did not take photos. That is NOT a police or hospital photo: it was taken by a friend of hers, or by herself.

Having failed in every respect other than making rich people more rich at the expense of everyone else, the repubs shape shift vis a vis Obama on a daily basis now: “terrorist”, “elitist”, “corrupt”, “not a citizen”, “scary black man”, “secret socialist” etc. etc. etc. But they’re pinned, having placed the nation on the slippery slope to the greatest crash in it’s history. Repubs, everyone can see the smoking rubble.

    Ironic, ain’t it???

Of course, in a world where gentlemen (and women) respect others of different political beliefs, the McCain campaign would have issued this statement:
“The McCain campaign is shocked and disgusted by Ms. Todd’s recent actions. We want to let the citizens of this country know that we do not condone or support this type of behavior. Playing the victim of a hate crime will not be tolerated by any of us. It is no laughing matter. After the proper evaluation of Ms. Todd’s mental condition, we fully support her being reprimanded to the fullest extent of the law.
We realize that we are locked into a major battle for the highest office in the free world. We respect our opponents campaign, and would like to reiterate that this type of behavior is not acceptable. Not now. Not never.”

I, of course, won’t hold my breath

It’s hard for me to believe that Obama would personally direct his supporters to beat up anyone whose car sported a McCain sticker, much less carve backwards letters into their faces. There is absolutely NOTHING to be gained from this (I doubt any victim would change their vote), so I doubt any staffers would condone such behavior, either.

It’s also difficult for me to believe that McCain would personally ask his supporters to fake physical abuse and blame it on black Obama supporters. McCain himself isn’t really into race-baiting (he still remembers being on the receiving end of that in 2000), but I suppose it’s possible that some of his staffers might think that manufacturing a race incident could work in their favor, sick as that is.

It sounds to me like the incident was the idea of Ashley Todd — or possibly a local organizer. As long as the McCain campaign deals with it swiftly, I don’t see a backlash for McCain. And there’s no reason at all why anyone should change their opinion of Obama over this. Most of the bigots who would buy this story are already in the “nobama” camp anyway.

As far as I am concerned, the McCain campaign were already linked to race-baiting.

  144. pikaomega says:

Okay, now that this has been blown apart as a complete fabrication, I really think that the way we collectively address the issue needs to be tempered. Be clear that I am in no way, shape or form condoning what has happened with this girl, nor am I advocating for anything less than full punishment as the law allows. But, as someone who has spent my life fighting mental illness in and out of psych wards, I would urge caution to everyone who is going after Ashley Todd on a personal basis.

None can argue that what she did was anything less than a reprehensible, toxic act designed to vilify Obama supporters as a whole, through the specter of the “large, scary black man.” However, there needs to be a distinction between the vile manifestation of Todd’s personal issues and the uproar that those issues generated, and a moment lent to consider the context in which this has played out.

Regardless of her reasoning, Todd’s story was breathlessly spoon fed to various media outlets by McCain staffers who repeated the unfounded allegations (which were regarded with skepticism by the authorities from the start), where they quickly found their way to the front pages and chyrons of top right wing media outlets. The story was used to fan the fires of animosity already smoldering and justify the noxious vitriol flowing from the gullets of the Republican machine.

The focus on Ashley Todd, in the sense of the overall narrative, is misplaced. The 24 hour networks, the Republican network, the McCain/Palin campaign all stood to gain from this story were it true-and even if it really wasn’t.

We do ourselves a disservice when we “shoot the messenger,” as Todd did little more than attempt to make real the hatred that has, for the most part, existed only in frantic shouts at rallies and hushed-tone insinuations from soulless operatives.

    We are better than that.

  146. pikaomega says:

I would really like to believe that we are.

If not, that what the hell can we claim to be?

We stand at a dangerous precipice, with too many voices raised in incoherent shrieks. When one is pushed, the natural inclination is to push back, until one is left as the champion of ideals that would seem ludicrous in clearer moments of thought. That is where we seem to be at present, and it is terrifying. “An eye for an eye” may seem cliche, but it is true none the less. I question whether, given our present state, we can ever revert to a state of consideration and reasoned discourse. Though we may never have achieved purity on this end, but there was a point where at least the illusion existed over the exultation of willful ignorance and bitter derision that we now claim as our cultural masthead.

I am personally at a loss as to the solution to the problem, a route to our collective salvation. I, like everyone else that has ever lived, have a personal agenda-beliefs, thoughts and feelings that inform my existence and motivate my actions-but above all else I hold nuance in the highest regard. There is always another side, one that feels as strongly and believes as fervently in the righteousness of their cause as I. The only way that I can justify my opinion is to assert it as just that-my opinion-and allow the other side the opportunity to do the same.

I suggest that we argue not on conjecture, which is subjective, but on fact, which is not. Wherever we end up then, we must be willing to agree to disagree. You will never sway someone with fact who steadfastly refuses that fact’s veracity, and you are cheapened if you allow yourself to be enveloped in an unnecessary battle of triviality.

    But, that’s just my opinion.
