Palin Was A Feminist Before She Wasn’t

Yesterday in her interview with NBC, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) told NBC’s Brian Williams that she rejected the “label” of being called a feminist:

WILLIAMS: Governor, are you a feminist?

PALIN: I’m not going to label myself anything, Brian. And I think that’s what annoys a lot of Americans, especially in a political campaign, is to start trying to label different parts of America, different backgrounds, different — I’m not going to put a label on myself.

But in the past, Palin has been more than willing to tout her feminist credentials. From a Sept. 30 interview with CBS’s Katie Couric:

COURIC: Do you consider yourself a feminist?

PALIN: I do. A feminist who believes in equal rights.

Palin then went on to talk about her upbringing — “I’ve been brought up in a family where gender hasn’t been an issue” — and how her feminist “started with that.” Watch the two appearances:

So basically, Palin isn’t willing to call herself a feminist when in the room with two men (Williams and McCain) but is more than happy to do so when talking with another woman (Couric). As Rachel Maddow commented on her MSNBC show yesterday, “Why was that horrible label OK last month, but now it’s horrible? Has it been a bad month for labels, Sarah the maverick?”

More here on Palin’s decidedly anti-feminist positions.

With labels being the hallmark of Palin’s campaign, wonder who told her that “feminist” was a bad word? Guess there are no feminists in “real America”.

    PEACE

  3. shoeless says:

Sarah is such a Maverick that she is an anti-feminist feminist.

  4. misshusseinmolly says:

Waitaminnit — Palin, the “hockey mom”, the “pit bull with lipstick”, the “maverick”, the “reformer”, who praises “Joe Sixpack” from “real America”, and who decries “socialists” and “elitists”, has now decided that “trying to label different parts of America” isn’t for her?

Does she ever LISTEN to herself?

  5. LividLib says:

PALIN: “I’m not going to label myself anything, Brian.”

You mean like a hockey mom, maverick, or a pitbull with lipstick?

  6. Dumb_Hussein_Fox says:

I’m not going to put a label on myself.

    Okay, Hockey Mom.

  7. Zimzone says:

Has it been a bad month for labels, Sarah the maverick?”

Not sure about labels, but it’s sure been a bad month for campaigning! The ‘Palin Bubble’ has burst. Infatuations initially have turned to horror & disbelief over a ‘Snowbilly in the White House’. (Sounds like a ‘B’ Walt Disney movie.)

Sara has a knack for other people paying her way. She sees the WH as the ultimate gravy train.

Folks, this is on feminist. This just happens to someone of the female gender who accidentally got on a fast track to power. Her record, her speeches and most certainly her interviews all substantiate the fact she can’t even afford to buy a clue.

‘Clueless in Wasilla’; the only book I’ve ever read…

PALIN: I’m not going to label myself anything, Brian.

I cannot help but wonder if she would answer that way if an interviewer asked her if she was Christian.

Sorry, that was snarky but this woman bugs me. So evasive!

  14. LiberalVoter says:

4 November cannot come soon enough. Hopefully Palin’s star will burn out quickly aftwards and we never have to hear from her again. I can’t help but wonder if she was chosen to give her a jump on the Republican 2012 presidential election. That is a scary and sickening thought. And as things get worse, and they will for a few years, we need to keep the spotlight on the Republicans who got us into this mess (like Gramm) and to make sure they cannot force their failures onto President Obama. It is a slimy game plan, and therefore sounds ‘right’ up their alley.

  15. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Moose Lips is the main reason 98% of all eligible voters in Michigan have registered this election, with a higher increase in the democratic areas (than repug areas) than ever before. I think that’s all she can possibly be good for.

  16. DidHeJustSayThat says:

McCain should have picked a “real” vice presidential candidate.

One who is serious, one who voters could trust.

I don’t know what they were thinking, but they obviously had no intention on winning the White House.

Now, finally, we have very solid planks in the platform that will allow us to build an even stronger foundation for our country. It’s all good and it’s encouraging. You would maybe have assumed that we would have gotten further away from those strong planks. But no, they’re there, they’re solid, we stand on them and again I believe that it is the right agenda for the country at this time. Very, very clear and contrasted tickets in this election November 4th. People are going to see the clear contrasts, you just go to the planks in our platforms and that’s where you see them.

She isn’t intelligent enough to listen to herself. Hell, her number 1 on the ticket doesn’t listen to himself.

If you went into a board room and contradicted yourself continuously you would be out of a job.

Now, finally, we have very sordid pranks in the platform that will allow us to build an even bigger joke on our country. It’s all good fun and it’s hilarious. You would maybe have assumed that we would have gotten further away from those stupid pranks. But no, they’re there, they’re sordid, we play them and again I believe that it is the right practical joke on the country at this time. Very, very clear and contrasted tickets in this election November 4th. People are going to see the clear contempt, you just go to the pranks in our platforms and that’s where you see them.

  27. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

It is just another case of Sarah in Wonderland. Words mean what she wants them to mean when she says them. There is no past, there is no future, there is only Sarah and when She speaks she is workin’ for the Lord. Too bad that “the Lord” is a purely mythological being.

  28. Zooey says:

The Obama campaign needs to put together an ad showing how Palin answers according to who she’s speaking to at any given moment.

McCain/Palin just can’t get over the FACT that they think we’re all as stupid as the people who attend their rallies.

  29. barracks9 says:

Um…Governor? You wouldn’t be governor if not for the feminists who came before you.

I think the proper thing to do in polite society is say “Thank you.”

what’s with the Sarah Palin obsessive bashing today? Call me a concern troll or whatever, but I really think heavy-handed emphasis gives too much energy to what amounts to a sideshow at this point.

Our economy is entering what is going to be at least a very painful recession. Quit acting like the clown at the back of the classroom whose strong asset is to point fun at and not to actually accomplish anything. Let’s see some investigative pieces about how the bailout/rescue is being conducted or what next steps might need to be taken. This other crap has become shooting fish in a barrel. The stuff here isn’t funny like SNL, or well constructed like Katie Couric’s interview … it is just unproductive outrage and hate. I’d like to see it focused somewhere more productive.

  36. celtic cynic says:

Palin won’t label herself “anything” (her own words), but she sure has no problem in applying labels to everyone and everything.

    Target rich, indeed.

johnfyounger Says: “it is just unproductive outrage and hate.”

I personally don’t hate her, but I am disappointed that
JM picked her as his running mate. If you want to see
outrage and hate (based on lies) go to redstate or drudge.

  38. barracks9 says:

    johnfyounger Says @ 34:

Outrage and Hate? Sounds like projection to me.

We are appalled at her audacity and her mendacity and her apparent inability to know truth from lie. We are appalled by her obvious aspiration to climb the political ladder at any cost.

And if we express that in jabs and jests, well, that’s just our way of coping. But outrage and hate? Not so much.

Exasperation and pique? You bet. As for those other weighty topics, we’ve covered those, and rather insightfully I’d like to say.

  39. johnfyounger says:

maybe my words are a bit strong, and I like to have some fun with this topic too, it just seems to me that taking potshots like think progress seems to be doing today could easily be construed by someone who does not share a negative opinion of Gov. Palin as hateful. And with 2 wars and an economy in shambles, perhaps this blog should focus on more important “target rich environments” than a politician who (in my opinion) couldn’t talk her way out of a paper bag and is never going to have a platform of such importance again in her life after Nov 4.

  42. MapleStreet says:

Most of the feminists I know tend to revile beauty pageants as tokenizing women.

  43. Doc Rock says:

Second prize in a beauty contest, collect $10.

  44. LibertyLover says:

Palin is a woman that will not acknowledge the difficulty that women have faced historically to make the gains in society that they enjoy today. We all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us even if we do not acknowledge them, they are still there.

Palin is a woman who while enjoying the labors and fruits of those labors of women that came before her, would seek to deny them to other women. Women like Palin like to keep other women down, because it can make it seem like her achievements are just that much better than those that she will not support.

One thing about Palin, though, is that she trades on her beauty and this practice is primary to her “feminism”. At some point, and it is coming soon, beauty fades and then all one has left is what you stand for and one’s integrity. Palin might be wise to remember what her party likes to espouse: “Character counts.”

  45. johnfyounger says:

    Shayne,
I wonder how your “love it or leave it” sentiment expressed about my participation here is any different than those reflected in the comments of all these “real American” talking monkeys.

  46. bettybrown says:

I wonder how your “love it or leave it” sentiment expressed about my participation here is any different than those reflected in the comments of all these “real American” talking monkeys.

i know you didn’t ask me the question, but the comment shayne had left to you was pretty much what i’d been thinking about saying. and, as far as the difference between someone complaining about a website they clearly just spent time reading and people who point fingers at other americans and call them “anti-american” or imply there’s a real american and a fake america – WOW. i’d say there is a HUGE difference between people visiting a WEBSITE, and people who are all citizens of the same COUNTRY. website…country…yep, think about it…amazingly freaking huge difference.

  47. johnfyounger says:

I would agree with your distinction regarding different degrees of behavior. however, I am talking about the sentiment behind the comments.

also the tendency to somehow characterize me as “other” (ie someone who just started reading this website- or who disagrees with views expressed here) is inaccurate. I have read this site regularly for more than a year and I appreciate it greatly. More recently, as I have chosen to ad my voice to the comments, I have found other commenters to be fairly unacceptable of a range of thought. And I when I felt that I was personally attacked, and I called those attacks what I saw them as.

On the day this story was posted, it was the third or forth in a row and it struck me as small and petty. And the issues we are currently dealing with as a nation are big and important. I don’t mean to be argumentative, I just felt the focus was inappropriate and I said so. And I was disappointed with the response here.
