What an idiot! “Fruit fly research”? Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), like the baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the bacterium E. coli, are used as model organisms in research of diseases like autism, Alzheimers, muscular dystrophy, etc.

These science-illiterate idiots just make me so mad!

nabalzbbfr, if you believe all of what you said and, if you think “spare the rod and spoil the child” is any kind of license to use corporeal punishment on your children, then you, my friend, have much studying to do to straighten yourself out. The verse in question used the word “rod” in the sense of a measuring rod, which is to say, you are to explain things to your child in an age-appropriate context.

Not that I owe you a Bible lesson but I think it’s appalling that people would use scripture to justify abuse and the perpetuation of benighted thought.

Autism is, in the vast majority of cases, a fraud and a racket. It is a product of utterly misguided permissive parenting, which turns perfectly normal kids into dysfunctional antisocial brats. The problem is parents have been getting their advice from idiotic child-rearing books like Spock’s, instead of the Holy Bible: spare the rod and spoil the child. Scientific research on genetic causes of autism is a colossal waste of time and money, whether or not it involves fruit flies in Paris or elsewhere.

If this project really were worthy of funding, then it could have been funded through the normal channels — involving an evaluation by a committee of experts in the field. There would have been no need to slip it into a bill at midnight, in order to bypass scrutiny.

Seriously, folks. Is this really the process you want to fund science research? Based on whoever is most friendly with their congressman?

There are hundreds and hundreds of geneticists, physiologists and biologists who use fruit flies as a model to understand genes and development. Nobel prize for genetics and development in 1995 went to three fruit fly researchers, Drs. Edward Lewis, of the California Institute of Technology, Christiane Nuesslein-Volhard, of Germany’s Max-Planck Institute and Eric Wieschaus, at Princeton.

Most were so impressed by this ‘working mum’. As we now discover, this is not a typical ‘working mum’ that handles her household and children apart from a job. The household is handled by her wuss husband, the children are only presented to impress, dragged around all over the place having to listen to what must be to them very boring speeches, and occasionally the baby is kind of hanging in her arm just to impress.

How many working mothers would be so lucky to have her employer and/or taxpayer pay for her wardrobe. But not only hers, for some inexplicable reason all the children had to be clothed by the taxpayer as well……. but she will set things straight and start saving together with Maverick McCain when they are elected

But most of all, how conceited this woman is and narcissistic actually, bragging about her ‘executive experience’ and having the audacity to compare herself with Obama and Hillary, even insinuating that her experience is superior to Obamas.

How dare she compare herself to Hillary who is dignified, intelligent and capable, everything Palin is not.
And I would like to see her in a debate as we saw Obama, mind you, I guess she could wink her way through it and pat herself on the back once again.

I can just see her negotiating politics with Heads of States of other countries, when she starts winking at them they will surely get the wrong idea.

But I forgot, in her original speech she mocked Obama for wanting to read people their rights, she is all for shoot first and ask questions later.

Palin’s big policy address incorporates the subjugation of science to religion. Palin said several times during her prepared remarks that she was on a “mission” — a none-to-subtle Christian code word. Her mission, alas, has no room for science, which is heresy in the real, pro-Christian areas of the country. Maybe she’s planning prayer meetings or more of these “policy” pep talks for special needs families.

The enormous ignorance of Sarah is matched only by the sad judgment of John McCain. Sarah’s best effort to lead the cause of special-needs children should start by educating herself about birth control. Women over 40 run a greater risk to have a child with Downs Syndrome. If Sarah knew how to read, she might know this, and would not have subjected her poor baby to a lifetime of “special needs” in the first place. She and her alcoholic husband should go back to Alaska and watch out for Russia from her kitchen window. You betcha!

What does Olive grove fruit fly research in Paris France have to do with scientific research at UNC.

The money is going to Paris France for fruit fly research to prevent them from raiding olive groves.

I’m going to be as restrained and measured as I possibly can about this. This is the most mindless, ignorant, uninformed comment that we have seen from Gov. Palin so far, and there’s been a lot of competition for that prize. Fruit flies are … a standard scientific model in genetic research along with a whole range of other organisms and cells, including mice, rats, there’s nothing fluffy or funny about it.

I’m old enough to remember when the Mediterranean fruit fly (nicknamed the Medfly) wrought economic disaster for southern California in the early 1980’s. I’d say there’s some value in researching such insects.
