Rove: ‘McCain Has Been An Open Book About His Health Issues For Years And Years And Years’

Discussing on Fox News last night how Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had indicated this week that she would release her medical records, former Bush adviser Karl Rove said that he’s “not certain” Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) has “released all his medical records with regard to his brain aneurysm.” “I don’t think he’s given out all those,” said Rove.

Rove then claimed that in contrast, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), “has been an open book about his health issues”:

ROVE: McCain has been an open book about his health issues for years and years and years. But yes, look, the American people, you know, sort of want to be assured that you’re physically up to the job. And you know, it’s just one of the — one of the things candidates have to go through.

Watch it:

While it’s true that Biden did not release his full medical records, McCain is not much better in this regard and is far from being the “open book” that Rove claims. In fact, the New York Times reported earlier this week that the manner in which McCain released his medical records “made it impossible to get a complete picture” of his health:

Last May, his campaign and his doctors released nearly 1,200 pages of medical information, far more than the three other nominees. But the documents were released in a restricted way that leaves questions, even confusion, about his cancer.

A critical question concerns inconsistencies in medical opinions about the severity of his melanoma; if the classification of his melanoma is more severe, it would increase the statistical likelihood of death from a recurrence of the cancer.

Earlier this month, a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. Poll found that 33 percent of Americans are concerned about a candidate who once had cancer like McCain. In the same poll, 47 percent said they were concerned that he would not finish a four-year term as president in good health.

59,447 people, including 2,908 doctors, have signed a petition calling on McCain to “issue a full, public disclosure of all of his medical records,” but his campaign has thus far refused to do so. That’s far from being an open book.

And let us not forget that Palin has backtracked on the release of her medical records. We’re unlikely to see them prior to November 4 — or ever.

  2. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

McCain has been an “open book” on his health medical records? Oh, Karl, you must be still stuck in the parallel Bush-in-Wonderland universe when up is down, black is white, left is right, and in is out?

  3. raynman says:

Karl Rove knows as much about open books as Matt Drudge knows about investigative journalism.

  4. Shayne says:

McCain released 1,200 pages and gave the reporters that included one doctor, Sanjay Gupta, 4 hours to look over them without allowing any copies to be made. Open book my a$$.

  5. Bob says:

McCain doesn’t need to release his medical records unless he wants to show that he is fit for office.

  6. tom says:

I am much less concerned about the cancer that will kill McNumbNuts than I am about his mental illness that would kill all of us if he were ever to become president.

  7. celtic cynic says:

What good is an open book with only blank pages?

  8. had enough says:

Then there should be no problem in disclosing ALL medical records… right Rove?

  9. barracks9 says:

Someone tell me, please: by giving Karl Rove air time, isn’t Flocks Noose guilty of collusion, or at least, harboring a fugitive?

  10. stateofthedivision says:

“Open book”, a nonexistent word in Republican vernacular.

  11. MapleStreet says:

    Typical Rove M.O.

Keep making dumb lies. Some who hear you will believe you. The Opposition will be so busy putting out the little fires from your lies and refuting your lies that they won’t be able to execute their strategy.

  12. Bob says:

I agree with tom. More important is his mental health. He really hasn’t been tested and we’ve seen in the last few weeks how irratic he is when faced with a crisis. On the other hand, if you are debilitated with some disease, say skin cancer, it can greatly affect your mental health.

  13. kasinca says:

KKKarl Rove has been a liar all his life.

  14. Buckie Boy says:

Rove have been a liar for years, and years, and years.

McCancer had his medical records out for three hours….THREE HOURS, and at 1200 pages I guess it could take years, and years, and years to read them all.

  15. jpopphan says:

Karl Rove is incapable of telling the truth, period. So why in the hell does any respectable news network bother to interview him?

We all know that McCain has health issues. We all know that McCain is pretty old for someone who wants to run this country. We have a right to know what state of health he is in. Especially given who he has selected as his replacement should he die or become incapacitated while in office.

McCain should either release his full medical records for public review or he should drop out of the race.

  16. DidHeJustSayThat says:

    What with the logic?

You need to release medical records.

My records have been an open book.

    Okay, release the records.

No, my records are an open book.

Um, well, can we see your medical records?

    No! They’re an open book.

    Where does this go?

  17. tarazan says:

A book that never was published…!!

He’s on Fox News for christ sakes!

  19. Zimzone says:

As open a book as Rove’s election fixing?

KKKarl, maybe you could begin by telling us about ‘00…

  20. DidHeJustSayThat says:

This is meant for a crowd that is full steam ahead with the empty threat of WMD’s and cool when they say, ‘oh, well we thought they had them – USA, USA, USA!

  21. ctcadguy says:

We need to Lock-up all the War criminals already!

  22. wolfsinger says:

What I’m about to say is not original, but it is accurate:

If Karl’s lips are moving. He’s lying.

Today’s example of obfuscation about John’s medical records being an “open book” is just another example of Christian right Republican projection.

If they say they’re doing “it” -fill in the blank” – they aren’t.

If they say they aren’t? – they are.

  23. aedelbert says:

An “open book”… Interesting choice of words when you consider that even a casual look at the track record of the Bush-Cheney-Rove administration suggests they never cracked a book the whole time they were in office, figuratively or literally.
