Yesterday, Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) sat for an interview with Barbara West of WFTV Orlando. West loaded her interview questions with right-wing smears, likening progressive tax policies to Marxism. Biden responded to West’s ridiculous line of questioning with disbelief:
WEST: You may recognize this famous quote, “from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.” That’s from Karl Marx. How is Sen. Obama not being a Marxist if he intends to spread the wealth around?
BIDEN: Are you joking? Is this a joke? … Or is that a real question? (LAUGHTER).
“I don’t know who’s writing your questions,” Biden told West later in the interview. When West asked if Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) wanted to “turn America into a Socialist country like Sweden,” Biden said, “I don’t know anybody who thinks that except the far right-wing of the Republican Party.” Watch it (beginning at 2:15):
Members of the media criticized West’s unprofessional interview, calling it “embarrassing,” “hostile,” and “ham-handed.”
West, however, defended her interview questions to the Orlando Sentinel saying, “These are questions that are rolling about right now and questions that need to be asked.” “I think I was probing and maybe tough,” she said.
West’s “probing and maybe tough” interviews are apparently reserved only for progressives. When West interviewed Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), she didn’t ask him a single question about his proposed policies. Instead, she asked McCain why he had not “gone after” Obama’s previous ties to ACORN. She asked if McCain felt that Democrats were “trying to make it impossible” for him to criticize Obama and allowed McCain to repeatedly mischaracterize Obama’s relationship with William Ayers.
Yes, how is allowing a “temporary” 3% tax reduction on marginal income over $250K to expire not Communism?
Also, why do you love terrorists so much?
These are excellent questions, and I believe the Palin/McCain campaign should continue to push them right up to the election, and if that doesn’t work, pull out a REAL game changer for 2012.

October 25th, 2008 at 9:24 pmTo many Republicans anything short of complete capitulation to the wants of the super rich is socialistic. Despite the mass fraud that has led to our current economic melt down the right wingers chafe at the thought of regulations that could have prevented this from happening. West’s fantasy story line of a socialist state is absurd. Our economic peril is very real.

Human Development Index
The Human Development Index (HDI) is an index combining normalized measures of life expectancy, literacy, educational attainment, and GDP per capita for countries worldwide. It is claimed as a standard means of measuring human development — a concept that, according to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), refers to the process of widening the options of persons, giving them greater opportunities for education, health care, income, employment, etc. The basic use of HDI is to rank countries by level of “human development”, which usually also implies to determine whether a country is a developed, developing, or underdeveloped country.

Asking if Obama is a Marxist because he wants to roll back the disastrous Bush tax cuts is like asking if McCain is a caveman because he doesn’t support Lilly Ledbetter. Neither question should be taken seriously.

October 25th, 2008 at 11:17 pmAfter the election, the righties will be is a short period of disarray. We should prolong this period as long as possible, to give democrats some breathing space for forming and enacting legislation. One way, is to begin a campaign of promoting long-stalled initiatives, such as the reimposition of the Fairness Doctrine, and lifting the SSI cap on earnings.
In this way, we can tie them up in legislative knots over cultural issues, while the real agenda is put into play.
Give them so many targets, they waste considerable time, and energy determining which ones to fight.

October 25th, 2008 at 11:50 pmCommenter “kravitz” on ABC News “Political Punch”:
Here’s Wade West’s website:
http://mediapowergroup.com/wadebio.html
I believe that kravitz’s suspicion that the McCain campaign directly fed talking points for Barbara West to use on Senator Biden is exactly what occurred.
I watched the interview that Barbara West conducted with McCain earlier this month, and the contrast between that and the Biden interview could not be more stark. Her first question to McCain was (paraphrased), “Why have you not gone after Obama regarding his association with the scandal-plagued ACORN?”
This bimbo is probably negotiating a move to Faux News this very moment.
October 26th, 2008 at 12:06 amI just found out via the Denver Post online edition that Phil Berg’s lawauit questioning Obama’s citizenship has been tossed out like a baby with the bath water. That should take of that strawman argument such as it was.
October 26th, 2008 at 12:13 amBiden continues to impress me, what dumb questions, that stuff would work good with Palin but Biden that is a different story entirely. I don’t see how any working middle class can support this kind of poison coming from McCain/Palin? This kind of fascist garbage right now just sickens me, I have heard this socialist argument until it is nauseating, lets label their extremists, and you know as well as I that label is “Nazism”,
October 26th, 2008 at 12:15 amIt formed most of its alliances on the political right.
Theres a good reason (actualy, several) why Obama tabbed Joe Biden as his running mate. They’re readily apparent in the video.
October 26th, 2008 at 12:26 amWhy aren’t we talking about McIIIrd’s fascist tendencies?
October 26th, 2008 at 1:33 amThat has got to be one of the best smack-down’s I have ever seen. My only regret was that Biden didn’t turn the tables on her. When she asked that last question (really an accusation) about Obama making this country into a socialist country like Sweden, he should have asked her “Perhaps you can tell me what is wrong with Sweden, they are a peaceful, prosperous and happy country”. I would have loved to see her try to answer that question.
October 26th, 2008 at 2:03 amCan’t blame Biden, I would have laughed at the ahole too. What a putz that guy was for even letting that spew out of his mouth.

I’m glad Joe called her on her stupid questions.
October 26th, 2008 at 2:47 amI have FOX and CNN on cable here, in Holland. I watch FOX to have a laugh, and it usually works out fine. To me they are fools and part of the right-wing media-channels. I think I can see a pattern that had me worrying for a while (not any more, it isn’t working for them). 99% of the times that the right launches accusations about whatever Obama’s campaign is doing, they themselves are doing it or have done it already. Like with “Acorn”, they had already hired a firm which they knew would “help” them with fraudulous registrations. They say Obama will raise taxes, but they are planning to do that themselves, Obama’s campaign is dirty, but they have been smearing for months now, Obama is working with terrorists, but they themselves . . .etc. The list is endless.
So, not to worry, these tactics (or is it strategy) are not working. For now.
If somewhere, out of the blue a wild accusation (breaking news!!!) arises, it usually means it is a pre-emptive move to distract the MSM from a glitch / a gaffe / whatever it is that is troubling the McCain campaign. It’s really fun to watch, as long as it is not working for them.
Maybe you all knew this already, but for me, a first time election-watcher, this is amazing.

October 26th, 2008 at 6:27 amThis campaign is a good object lesson for liberals of every stripe. I’m sure Biden has never been exposed to red-baiting of the sort Obama and by implication he himself has now been subject. This however was once commonplace for progressives in this country who refused to take loyalty oaths or fink on their left-wing associates. And many liberals, no different than Biden, acquiesced or actively supported such efforts. Since Clinton (who was savaged, but to my recollection never seriously red-baited to the extent now seen), revisionist history has it that McCarthyism was some sort of aberration of the far-right. It was not. Liberals were some of the biggest advocates of guilt by association, as they scurried to disassociate themselves from the left in the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s and 60s. Let’s hope that red-baiting, now that its been thoroughly “vetted,” will no longer rear its ugly head in American politics. Let’s hope further that we can begin to talk of a socialist alternative as a viable option in our political discourse.

From Bill Moyers last nite:
“the 30-nation Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development – or OECD – is out this week with a new report on global gaps between rich and poor. Guess which great industrial nation had the fourth highest inequality in incomes – behind Mexico, Turkey and Portugal? Right. Us.
Here’s precisely what the report says: “Rich households in America have been leaving both middle and poorer income groups behind. This has happened in many countries but nowhere has this trend been so stark as in the United States.” Now there’s some real spreading around of the wealth – in one direction: up.”
This is Obviously because American Hedge Fund Managers and CEOs are SO much more intelligent and Competent than their counterparts in other countries.
October 26th, 2008 at 7:30 amOrlando loves Barbara West. Sorry to tell ya. Because when push comes to shove in Mickey Mouse town, there are three factors that drive politics here: religion (Christian Fundamentalism), Republicans, and money money money. O-town believes in multiculturalism only because that equates to more restaurant choices; we believe in racial equality as long as ethnics know their place (Parramore, Eatonville, Conway/Curry Ford, Pine Hills), and we believe in Jesus Christ’s abiding credo: Seek Ye the Kingdom of God at the Holy Land Theme Park.
October 26th, 2008 at 7:40 amJust because stupid, ignorant people keep asking the same, inane, asinine question over and over does not mean someone has to answer it. It is a loaded question which has ALWAYS been a logical fallacy and a dishonest tactic. You KNOW that you are just appologizing for ANYTHING that might hurt Obama you dont care about honesty or integrity.
On The View, Woppi Goldberg asked John McCain if she should worry about slavery making a comeback under John McCain. Did McCain decline to go on the View again? Did McCain cry foul after the interview? NO, HE DID NOT. He answered the question like a man and moved on.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Whoopis comment didnt come in a vacuum and was to make a point. McCain talking about strict constitutionalism and an unchanging constitution. The Marxist question has NO POINT except to smear Obama. No one hearing the question in context took it to mean that McCain was a threat to bring back slavery. The situation is apples and oranges.
Get ready for media outlets getting shut down under Obama. Free speach will be out the window if you ask these little dictators tough questions and don’t agree with them.
You folks are asking for it. Dictatorship is upon us useful idiots.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Well you are going out of your way to be a useful idiot that is for sure. When you start talking about dictatorships becuase of complaints about DISHONEST questions you show that you are in FACT an idiot. YOU are asking for it. We get that you love to be lied to and brainwashed but a whole lot of people would like the media to be somewhat honest
October 26th, 2008 at 4:00 pmOK I had to see the clip a second time.

October 26th, 2008 at 4:48 pmTake a close look at her (eyes,in particular) after Biden says he doesn’t know who is writing her questions. She is livid! He really landed a good punch.
October 26th, 2008 at 6:39 pmApparently her husband is a Republican consultant. I guess now we know who wrote the questions!
October 26th, 2008 at 7:04 pmThere are many republican supporters doing shameful things that will end their careers. Palin isn’t the only one, this women really made an ass of herself. I am certain she ran home to a bunch of GOP supporters for comfort.
Biden had every right to ask if she was joking because her question were childish.

October 27th, 2008 at 11:04 amTIME TO SLAP THE SUPER RICH WITH A RETURN TO REAL PROGRESSIVE TAXATION! Hows about the 70 to 90% bracket they enjoyed after Roosevelt’s New Deal? Hmmmm? Anyone who thinks Obama’s plan is communism or even socialism is a FOOL or a neo-con shill. This reporter is worried she might have to give back some of her PAYOLA she gets for SHILLING for the neo-con so-called Right Wing fringe.
