Why hasn’t Condoleezza Rice endorsed John McCain?

After Colin Powell endorsed Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) last week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has been touting the five former secretaries of state who have endorsed him. McCain tried to use that argument today on Meet the Press, but at first he could name only four of the five (who represent Nixon, Reagan, and George H.W. Bush administrations), momentarily forgetting George Shultz. Watch it:

So why isn’t Condoleezza Rice, the current Secretary of State, on that list? Rice has said she’s “not going to get involved in this political campaign.” But perhaps her hesitation has something to do with Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK). When asked in September whether Palin had enough experience for the job of vice president, Rice deliberately avoided the question, saying only, “These are decisions that Senator McCain has made. I have great confidence in him.”

Is it because she secretly wants a black man to win? If you ask whitey, he will tell you that nonwhites only endorse candidates based on melanin. Still whitey never votes based on the lack there of. It is a weird direct versus inverse relationship sort of thing….

There a days when McCain forgets he’s running for the presidency. As for Condi, she’s voting for George Bush again this year! She just loves him!

I think she’s voting for Obama but she’s not going to announce it. The right will accuse her of doing it because her and Obama share the same skin color.

And what about former UN Ambassador (and I use the phrase lightly here) Bolton? We’ve not heard from that pathetic waste of human flesh for some time now. Given that McSame and Bolton are big into blowing up Iraq for no earthly reason I’m surprised that Bolton hasn’t come out for McSame yet. Or, could this possibly suggest that Bolton has a scintilla of intelligence? Probably not but itw worth asking.

Afternoon my quadraped friend. We here are enjoying a lovely and warm autumnal Sunday. In a few I will be leading a nature hike with a some of the local children. Hope you/yours are well and having fun. With luck there might be some good stuff to goof on around here this day. Skiing has started but it is mostly all made snow.

Ummm… having campaigned for Bush in 2004 (unethically) and having been one of his most important and visible representatives, you really think she’s going to vote for Obama? I think you are dreaming.

I agree she’d be treated the way they’ve treated Powell if she did show any support for Obama.

She might not vote at all to avoid that and also to keep her in some good standing with Republicans when she has to find another job as a lobbyist/consultant and/or an AEI or heritage ‘fellow’. Voting Obama would also impact her earning potential on the speaking circuit.

  11. AmandaBlow says:

She’s black and affiliated with a very racist political party. She and Colin Powell were used as pawns in a chess game to make the party look less racist or completely devoid of racism if possible.

Kudos to Brokaw. He suckered him, but good.

The stage looks like someone’s den, with a antique-looking table; I’ll bet McCain thought it would be Old Home Week.

Brokaw’s done quite an effective job of stripping McCain’s points of all meaning. His clips are on point, and it seems a much different Brokaw, we’re seeing. If this is coming from the parent GE, it means that republican-leaning media corporations have decided to cut their losses, on his race.

  21. Hemlock for Gadflies says:

I don’t doubt that Rice will vote Republican, but as much as I dislike her I think it’s proper that she not publicly endorse a candidate.

As Secretary of State she’ll have to serve the next president, Obama or McCain, until his nominee is ratified by the Senate, so I’ll give her credit for remaining “this much” above the debate.

  22. texasbob says:

Well, Condi has avoided playing the role of Secretary of State so why should she suddenly take a stand on anything? She’s certainly not going to oppose McCain and loose a posh job at Stanford or some rightwing “think tank” by revealing that’s she’s a dumbass or a disloyal one.

    Mr. Fred sir,

Left wing loonies IS a “Childish Name”.

You need to read Frank Rich’s pretty darn good column in today’s NY Times to SEE how your Racial Attitudes will BACKFIRE:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/26/opinion/26rich.html?hp

From “In Defense of White Americans”:

referring to Gov. George Allen’s Macaca Moment..

It wasn’t just Allen’s lame racial joke or his cluelessness about 21st-century media like YouTube that made him a harbinger of the current G.O.P. fiasco. It was most of all the national vision he set forth: There are Real Americans, and there are the Others.

The Real are the small-town white folks Allen was addressing in southwestern Virginia. The Others — and their subversive fellow travelers, the Elites — are Americans like the young man who Allen maligned: a high-achieving son of immigrant parents who was born and raised in Washington’s Northern Virginia suburbs during its technology boom. (Allen, the self-appointed keeper of real Virginia, grew up in California.)
The farcical apotheosis of this strategy arrived last weekend, again on camera and again in Virginia, when a McCain adviser, Nancy Pfotenhauer, revived Allen’s original script, literally, during an interview on MSNBC.

After dismissing the Northern Virginia suburbs, she asserted that the “real Virginia” — the part of the state “more Southern in nature” — will prove “very responsive” to the McCain message. All Pfotenhauer left out was “macaca,”

Well, there are racists in western Pennsylvania, as there are in most pockets of our country. But despite the months-long drumbeat of punditry to the contrary, there are not and have never been enough racists in 2008 to flip this election. In the latest New York Times/CBS News and Pew national polls, Obama is NOW PULLING EVEN with McCain among WHITE men, a feat accomplished by NO Democratic presidential candidate in THREE DECADES , Bill Clinton included. The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey finds age doing more damage to McCain than race to Obama.

So I’m guessing she’ll try for a Senate seat somewhere down the road, or maybe just cash in all her favors now and jump on the corporate gravy train.

  72. Bad Eye says:

I cracked up when McCain couldn’t name the 5th Sec. of State. Watching him fumble around for the name was priceless…reminded me of the two Republican state governors a few months go on CNN who couldn’t name one single policy difference between Bush and McCain.

If McCain can’t remember the names of only 5 Sec’s. of State, especially given the importance of their endorsements, what else is he going to forget should he become president? Geez…we’ve got us another Reagan.

  73. Bad Eye says:

Oh, and did anyone catch McCain stating that Palin was more experienced than Obama and Biden combined, due to her executive experience?

On the whole, reading comments here and elsewhere, and attempting to discuss politics with friends of many persuasions, people on the right are much more prone to name-calling and unfounded beliefs about sinister conspiracies like Obama-is-a-terrorist, Obama-is-not-an-American, etc. People on the right, in my experience, are less likely to change their opinions when the factual bases for them have been disproven. Perhaps that accounts for the level of vitriol in their discourse – it’s making up for the dearth of reason.
