Kos points to Alaska election law, which shows that Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) — who was convicted on seven felony charges today — can’t even vote for himself in November:
I was convicted of a felony, but have served my time and am on probation. Can I register to vote?
No. A convicted felon may not register to vote unless unconditionally discharged from custody. When you are no longer on probation, a copy of your discharge papers will allow you to register.
UpdateThe New York Times brings up the possibility of a pardon: "Mr. Stevens is certain to appeal the conviction, and his supporters are also likely to explore the
possibility of obtaining a pardon from a fellow Republican, President George W. Bush, before Mr. Bush leaves office in January."
UpdateSenate Minority Leader
Mitch McConnell offers this reaction:
This is a sad but serious day. Sen. Stevens was found guilty by a jury of his peers, and now must face the consequences of those actions. As a result of his conviction, Sen. Stevens will be held accountable so the public trust can be restored.
UpdateAlaska's top election official, Gail Fenumiai, e-mailed Al Kamen at the Washington Post and said that as of now, Stevens is still able to vote on Nov. 4: "The Department of Law has determined that until a final judgment and sentence has been entered by the federal court in his case, Senator Stevens is
eligible to vote in the November 4 General Election."
Look for all sorts of underhanded pardons from Chimpy, after all, who's going to keep him company in Paraguay after Obama wins?
October 27th, 2008 at 9:41 pmOf course, a pardon of Stevens before he has admitted any wrongdoing and before he has even reported to prison would be prima fascia evidence that the WH is corrupt.
You're right, expect a pardon.
October 27th, 2008 at 9:42 pmIf I read Stevens' character correctly, he'll take it as a cue to vote for himself. Twice.
October 27th, 2008 at 9:44 pmnow is the time for

October 27th, 2008 at 10:19 pmOT, sorry, but here is the response I received from amazon.com:
Hello from Amazon.com.
Thank you for contacting us with your concern about the search results for the Barack Obama Halloween mask.
We'd like you to know that the search result for that item was modified by an Amazon.com customer using a "tagging" feature available on our website. The result was not provided by an Amazon employee or an Amazon search algorithm.
The search tag was removed quickly after it was discovered.
We've fixed the problem and apologize for any offense it created.
Thank you for contacting us.
I'm guessing that they had to send out a lot of these e-mails today. But I'm still not done with them. I'm replying that they need identify the customer who added the "tag" and ban them from their system, as this response is simply not sufficient to address my disgust.
Just wanted to share, and let's keep those complaints to amazon coming!
PEACE
October 27th, 2008 at 10:20 pmI want to know why they didn’t haul his ass to jail like they did Don Siegelman. Let me guess, Ted Stevens is special.

October 28th, 2008 at 12:11 amSo Mitch McConnell is going to send him a sternly worded letter?
October 28th, 2008 at 12:13 amDon't be silly, RUC. Sternly worded letters are the Democrats' thing.

Which one of the articles was scarier?
October 28th, 2008 at 1:38 amStrictly speaking, TeddyTubes probably will be able to vote for himself in this election. The disability doesn't attach until the conviciton becomes "final," and I don't think that's happened yet, and won't until sentencing.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:40 amHe can't vote for himself?
He shouldn't open his own door. Stevens should have a prison guard opening doors and closing them for him.
October 28th, 2008 at 4:02 amRight, Mitch, this is going to restore trust. I trust there are still "gifts" being given all over the place and not reported. Case in point, at both conventions, senators and reps were "given" precisely what the ethics overhaul rules allowed: no-fork food. Very pricey food. And they attended "charity" events for multiple congressmen to get around more rules.

October 28th, 2008 at 6:41 amFrom McLatchy, regarding reports that the US is twisting arms to get a staus of forces agreement, before the old one expires:
Odierno's spokesman, Lt. Col. James Hutton, said that the list "provided information as a part of our normal engagements with many in the government of Iraq."
If no new mandate or agreement is in place on Jan. 1, the U.S. would stop sharing intelligence with the Iraqi government and would cease to provide air traffic control, air defense, SWAT team training or advisers in government ministries, according to the document. The list also says that there'd be no "disposition of U.S.-held Iraqi convicts" without a security agreement.
Odierno's letter adds that American forces would stop training Iraq's Security Forces and its barely functioning navy and air force, patrolling its borders and protecting its waterways. The U.S. military would stop employing some 200,000 Iraqis and wouldn't refurbish 8,500 Humvees it's given to the Security Forces. Nearly every Iraqi unit works in tandem with the roughly 151,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, and American training teams are training Iraqi Security Forces nationwide.
The money being paid to the Awakening is part of that total, and this threat would seem to be an acknowledgement that Orierno thinks shortly there will be a change of american leadership. A leadership change, that no longer attempts to maintain the falsity of the current "the surge is a success" lie.
By threatening to stop payments, they also threaten the fragile stability of the country, and a return to the bloody Iraq of '04.
Odierno should be removed after the election. He's too involved with keeping the current fiction afloat until after the US elections. Threatening the Iraqis reveals just how unworkable this coalition thing really is.
October 28th, 2008 at 7:50 amWhy aren't the Republicans pressuring Stevens to resign?
You'd think they would see how badly their brand is hurting and would want to stop the bleeding

October 28th, 2008 at 8:02 amTed, we don't want you to vote. Can you understand that?
Jeeeshhhh! He gets caught and convicted, and he still whines like a rethuglican. Will wonders never cease?
October 28th, 2008 at 8:13 amSadly, Stevens probably still can vote, at least for this election. Under federal practice, a judgment of conviction isn't entered until the sentence is imposed. It's a hair-splitting detail, but that's what law is made of. What we have right now is a jury's finding of guilt.
With any luck, Stevens will spend much of his time in the voting booth realizing that this is likely the last time he'll get to use one.
