Sadly, Stevens probably still can vote, at least for this election. Under federal practice, a judgment of conviction isn't entered until the sentence is imposed. It's a hair-splitting detail, but that's what law is made of. What we have right now is a jury's finding of guilt.

With any luck, Stevens will spend much of his time in the voting booth realizing that this is likely the last time he'll get to use one.

Jeeeshhhh! He gets caught and convicted, and he still whines like a rethuglican. Will wonders never cease?

Just add "voter fraud" to his list of crimes and send him off to the general population of a real prison. He deserves to serve in the general population more so than a first time drug user.

Why aren't the Republicans pressuring Stevens to resign?

You'd think they would see how badly their brand is hurting and would want to stop the bleeding

From McLatchy, regarding reports that the US is twisting arms to get a staus of forces agreement, before the old one expires:

Odierno's spokesman, Lt. Col. James Hutton, said that the list "provided information as a part of our normal engagements with many in the government of Iraq."

If no new mandate or agreement is in place on Jan. 1, the U.S. would stop sharing intelligence with the Iraqi government and would cease to provide air traffic control, air defense, SWAT team training or advisers in government ministries, according to the document. The list also says that there'd be no "disposition of U.S.-held Iraqi convicts" without a security agreement.

Odierno's letter adds that American forces would stop training Iraq's Security Forces and its barely functioning navy and air force, patrolling its borders and protecting its waterways. The U.S. military would stop employing some 200,000 Iraqis and wouldn't refurbish 8,500 Humvees it's given to the Security Forces. Nearly every Iraqi unit works in tandem with the roughly 151,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, and American training teams are training Iraqi Security Forces nationwide.

The money being paid to the Awakening is part of that total, and this threat would seem to be an acknowledgement that Orierno thinks shortly there will be a change of american leadership. A leadership change, that no longer attempts to maintain the falsity of the current "the surge is a success" lie.

By threatening to stop payments, they also threaten the fragile stability of the country, and a return to the bloody Iraq of '04.

Odierno should be removed after the election. He's too involved with keeping the current fiction afloat until after the US elections. Threatening the Iraqis reveals just how unworkable this coalition thing really is.

Right, Mitch, this is going to restore trust. I trust there are still "gifts" being given all over the place and not reported. Case in point, at both conventions, senators and reps were "given" precisely what the ethics overhaul rules allowed: no-fork food. Very pricey food. And they attended "charity" events for multiple congressmen to get around more rules.

Strictly speaking, TeddyTubes probably will be able to vote for himself in this election. The disability doesn't attach until the conviciton becomes "final," and I don't think that's happened yet, and won't until sentencing.
