Tavis Smiley: ‘I don’t get a sense that Palin understands anything about me, anything about people of color.’

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal Friday, PBS’s Tavis Smiley ripped the media and Gov. Sarah Palin for ignoring issues of diversity and race. “Sarah Palin has not been asked anything about diversity and inclusion,” he said. “If you’re going to be a heart beat away from the presidency, it’s important when you’re from Alaska, that we understand what diversity means to you”:

This is the most multicultural, multiracial, multi-ethnic America ever. And no one should get to the White House in this America without us having a clear understand on where they stand with regard to those kinds of issues. … She’s been asked nothing of the sort. I just don’t get a sense that Sarah Palin understands anything about me, anything about people of color.

hahahah…Tavis Smiley……another Uncle Tom waiting for his break into the political arena to spread his stupidity via Obama’s coat tails.

go back to your church and talk about how black men should be more responsible you turncoat idiot

    BREAKING NEWS:

Steven found guilty of making false statements. But I wonder if that’s considered a bad thing in Alaska. (see Palin, Sarah)

    PEACE

    Fixed it.

  4. ralph the wonder llama says:

I like Tavis, but I don’t know that Sarah Palin being from Alaska says that she doesn’t know anything about diversity. Alaska has the largest proportion of Native Americans of any state, after all.

It’s her choice of political ideology that says she doesn’t know anything about diversity.

  5. freeman says:

    Yes I , McCain/Palin ,doesn’t know I .

  6. RUCerious says:

Ding! DING DING!! We have a winner!

She doesn’t know Jack about people of color. White, she gets.

    ______

And wasn’t one of her first acts as governor to completely shit on the Native American population by appointing one of her cronies to a seat traditionally held by a Native American?

  8. Buckie Boy says:

She can see “those people” from the window of her limo, so she is now an “Expert” on race also. What an amazing woman…..ugh!

  9. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

No, Tavis, it’s just that she couldn’t care less about people of color.

  10. Anonymouse says:

B-b-but she can see Oakland from her house!

  11. pete says:

Don’t feel bad, Tavis. She doesn’t understand people with an IQ above room temperature either.

  12. mary says:

Per the President of the African American Historical Society of Alaska, Gwendolyn Alexander:

“All previous Alaskan Governor’s have traditionally attended and participated in our annual Juneteenth Celebration. Gov. Palin was the first governor not to send out a congratulatory letter or assist us in any way with our Juneteenth activities.”
(Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery.)

  13. mary says:

From the same link as the post above:

‘Much has been made of Todd Palin’s Alaska Native heritage since his wife’s addition to the McCain ticket. But relations between Governor Palin and the Alaska Native community have been rocky. In February of this year, there were news stories about a controversy centering on her choice of appointees to the Alaska Board of Game. The Anchorage Daily news reported, “If those appointees had been confirmed, the Game Board would have had no Native member for the first time since it was formed in 1976.”’

  14. AverageTodd says:

Brokaw talked about the issue (that all of the presidential debate moderators were older white men) with Jon Stewart too. He said this will be the last time that occurs. Maybe Tavis will get a shot.

It would be nice to hear something from Palin about diversity, her comment about her gay friend to Ms. Couric notwithstanding. She has not addressed issues of race, immigration, Civil Rights, or the latent racial fears being stoked in America – even as they are unfolding before her own eyes.

Also, I would like to know her opinions on the Justice System, Drugs in America, The Prison system, Poverty, Nutrition, and the Media (media issues, not just complaints) It is a travesty that Palin has not been able to answer questions that we should always know about these candidates. I would like to ask her why it is okay to sequester herself as a VP candidate? Isn’t that irresponsible and against the public good?

  15. 666lattes says:

I wonder if Tavis knows about her “sambo beat that b!tch” comment after Obama beat Hillary in the primaries.

  16. Mr. Evil says:

Sarah Palin doesn’t even know that Gumby is green. Whatever happened to Pokie?
She doesn’t seem to know much about anything really. Except when the topics and questions are pre-screened as per her recent demands.

  17. MapleStreet says:

Unfortunately, (while I can certainly agree that Palin / McCain have no idea about being African American and that this is accentuated by race), I don’t see where Palin or McCain know anything about WASPs making less than 150K a year either.

  18. freeman says:

Perhaps a trip thru S.Cental Philly quided by a practicing Muslim or a stroll through Falluja would help give her some perspective on the issue .
Sarah doesn’t understand her own religion either Tavis .Jesus said if you have 2 coats and your neighbor has none , give him the other coat .Want a good socialist role model ?!
The basis for social justice and ethics isn’t profit but compassion .Sarah hangs about the temple as a money changer.

  19. sbobker says:

Maybe. Maybe not. Apparently she came in second to an Afro-American woman in the 1984 Miss Alaska contest. You know she must have felt about that.

  20. Jackie says:

Travis should be know better, Sarah doesn’t give the Eskimo’s in Alaska any rights why would she be any different with other miniorities. She even got her husband to disown his Family to make sure there was no connection to THOSE PEOPLE.

  21. shoeless says:

Every once in a while, one of these dumbass black Republicans has such an epiphany about one of their white fellow Republicans. Somehow though, these fools never put it together, and realize that they belong to a club which detests them as one of it’s core principles.

  22. kay62 says:

Barack Obama said: The “white community” must invest more money in black schools and communities, enforce civil rights laws, and provide this generation of blacks with “ladders of opportunity”. So, his comment about spreading the wealth, means white people give more money to blacks.
