McCain calls for Stevens to resign.

McCain calls for Stevens to resign.

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) today called for Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) to step down after yesterday’s conviction on seven felony counts:

stevensmccain.jpg Yesterday, Senator Ted Stevens was found guilty of corruption. It is a sign of the health of our democracy that the people continue to hold their representatives to account for improper or illegal conduct, but this verdict is also a sign of the corruption and insider-dealing that has become so pervasive in our nation’s capital.

It is clear that Senator Stevens has broken his trust with the people and that he should now step down. I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will be spurred by these events to redouble their efforts to end this kind of corruption once and for all.

Until now, McCain has largely refused to condemn the Senate’s longest-serving Republican. In July, Stevens appeared at a campaign event with McCain, who did not mention Stevens’s legal troubles. The McCain campaign even put out a statement saying that Stevens was “entitled to the presumption of innocence.”

Update Palin and Obama have also called for Stevens to resign.

That last part is true, John. Every American is SUPPOSED to be entitled to a presumption of innocence, as is ANYONE accused of a crime by our country’s legal system.

The PROBLEM, Johnny Boy, comes in when you and your party dismantled Habeas Corpus, set up Kangaroo Courts in Gitmo, sent jackbooted thugs in riot gear to arrest people planning protests in MN (and assaulted and arrested members of the press), and when you and your running mate have both repeatedly accused Senator Obama of supporting terrorism without a single shred of proof beyond the fact that he knows someone who committed terrorist acts some 40 years ago.

Even President Bush and Dick Cheney are “entitled to the presumption of innocence” however the problem, John, comes in when no one will actually INVESTIGATE whether or not the presumed innocence is in fact there. This is why we have investigations, impeachment proceedings et al.

Too little, too late, Johnny Boy.

    Soooo, when is McCain resigning?

    Solely an act of desperation…

And what does Sarah Palin say of her BFF Stevens?

Marie Says: And what does Sarah Palin say of her BFF Stevens?

She said it was a sad day for Alaska and Stevens’s family. Said that she knew he would do what was right for Alaska. You know, the usual vague b.s. that tries to sound like she is saying something profound but comes off like she’s said nothing at all – because she really hasn’t.

  10. Nevar says:

Sarah’s handlers are having a real knock-down drag-out right now, trying to figure out what she thinks about Uncle Teddy.

    Ew, really?

I’m thinking that smells a lot like ham. Really fatty and gristly ham.

  12. Who Lied Today? says:

Can Stevens be pardoned before he’s sentenced?

What if Stevens files an appeal?

It would also be interesting to see who Palin appoints as Senator, should Stevens win his reelection bid, but then resign. Ah, but I’m thinking the Good Senator from Alaska has scruples and does the right thing. Nevermind.

P.S. “He thinks scruples are money in Russia, and morals are pictures painted on walls.”

If he were a true mav’rick, he’d use this as an opportunity to deep-six Palin as well.

So, Senator McCain I have a simple question for you. Considering your self professed zeal for “taking on corruption in D.C.” coupled with your recent comments regarding the Stevens trial where you spoke about holding representatives accountable for improper or illegal conduct as being healthy for America, would a McCain Administration investigate the litany of allegations of laws broken by George Bush and Dick Cheney along with a complicit DOJ and allow full prosecution and convictions? Didn’t think so, Mr. Maverick.

  16. DRxJ says:

I know that we’ve been lessened the horror of troll infestations, but I really got to know:
Those who still support Bush, how ya going to feel about Herr Dubya when pardons Stevens?
    Will it be justified?
Or will you turn a blind eye and pathetically claim “Clinton did it too?”

  17. RUCerious says:

Wouldn’t it have been nice if McIIIrd had ’stepped down’ after his Keating Five scandal showed him to be a political opportunist of the nth degree?

  18. RUCerious says:

    D. H. Fox ~ had the same thought, but he’d select Huckabee as his last week running mate, have a heart attack, and Darlyee’s prediction might have a chance of coming true.

    Too scary.

  19. tarazan says:

Republicans are now realizing that they cannot beat Democrats,so they turned against each others.
In the process they will be losing the Presidecny, more House and Senate seats.
Republicans are looking for their new Reagan to come, but still cannot find another actor to do the job for them.
The party is in shambles and in a big disarry..no plans,no ideologies, two wars with no end in sight, big bailout of businesses in US history, and biggest deficit ever.
The party is trying to give public hope by asking public to elect McCain/Palin team…
But the public’s experience is bitter and dissatisfactory all last 8 years with Republicans.
McCain now is trying to score any point, even it means his buddy Stevens has to resign.
Why didn’t McCain resign himself when he was caught in the Keating Five scandal? !
The party is looking for a leader, and Sarah thinks she is that one…
Good luck for Republicans…they had their chance to run the country by controlling the House, and the White House..but alas , they failed miserably.
Republicans need to go a political rehab.center ,before they start thinking about winning again.

  20. Zimzone says:

    Toasterhead, lol!
OTOH, I think Stevens would be well aged meat, tough & stringy…

  21. flex says:

Yea right, this is what McCain says to the press. Since we know being a crook is a requirement for the Republican party, McCain staffers are already asking Stevens to fill out a job application.

Ah, another corrupt GOP politician’s career going down the INTER TUBES.

    Gotta love it!

  25. MapleStreet says:

This morning’s news: In a surprise move, Stevens vows to appeal.

I wonder what facts may come to light if Stevens should make a deal to turn state’s evidence ?

    HOW MAVERICKY!!!!!!

  27. drago says:

…and Palin will no doubt be VOTING for Stevens!

  28. Buckie Boy says:

Palin is cut from the same cloth as Stevens…corrupt, vindictive, self righteous.

    THERE’S the old John McCain.

  31. SP Biloxi says:

lol Thanks for the laugh of the day, TP. And it is certainly a joke for Grandpappy McSame to ask for Stevens to resign. How Mavericky. Both Geezer and Dingbat are certainly the King and Queen of BS.

  32. Gimme a Break says:

Stevens and McCain went to the same charm school. Is there anyone happier right now than Maria Cantwell, the senator from Washington, who Stevens tried to bully? He didn’t try, he bullied her and went to Washington State to campaign against her. Didn’t work Stevens. Gravy train just pulled out of the station in Anchorage and you weren’t on it.

  33. SteveSOD says:

    “Gimme a Break Says:

    LOL Great line!!

  34. SteveSOD says:

It’s funny how McGrandpa is calling on Tubular Ted Stevens to resign when Gramps wouldn’t even resign after his deep involvement in his very own Keating Five Scandal.
