This is a good point which is counter-intuitive to most Americans. If we had a network like BBC, it would be accountable to the people as a government agency. The corporations who run our mainstream media are not in any way accountable. They’ve not even accountable to the marketplace. If they were they wouldn’t cancel top-rated shows like Donohue just because he was against the Iraq invasion. In fact, in the runup to the war, BBC was much more reliable than any of our corporate-owned networks in spite of the fact that Britain was an ally in the war.

No thanks. The real problem has been the result of government meddling in what had been a system loaded with options and opinions. At one time there were thousands of radio stations, newspapers and television stations, owned by thousands of people — because no one was allowed to assemble an aggregate of media outlets, particularly in one region. If you owned a newspaper in City A, you could not also own a radio station. Thanks to the steady erosion of this control, we ended up with a tiny number of media corporations (often part of much larger corporations) that control virtually all the standard outlets. How many cities still have more than one daily newspaper — especially under separate owners and (ha! fat chance) locally-owned?

Time to hold the American Media and their corporate overlords responsible ….say perhaps……for the deaths of a million and a half Iraqi’s in their lies running up to this war!
Lying to acomplish immoral ends is not free speech ! Hold these people responsible for their parts in the most treasonous acts in our history as a nation. Prosecute purposeful dishonesty after redistributing the ridiculous wealth of the top 1 percent of our aristocracy , who have profitted beyond their wildest dreams and had every opportunity to put the breaks on facsism and the destruction of our constitution during the last several years!!!
If the law isn’t enough to protect our democracy from such desparities of wealth than the obvious alternative is to put an end to the disparity itself .
Let the free market compete to provide a better automobile but leave democracy to it’s living citizenry , regulate greed.
