The McCain campaign has spent the last weeks of the campaign repeatedly accusing Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) of being an advocate of “socialism.” But the New Yorker’s Philip Gourevitch revealed this week that Palin said earlier this year that her state’s oil tax was a mechanism “so we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.”
Today, MSNBC’s David Schuster asked McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds whether Palin’s “share the wealth” plan had socialist undertones. Bounds denied the allegation, claiming Alaska’s sharing of natural resources is “unique” and not at all socialist:
BOUNDS: No, in Alaska its a unique state because all the residents there have a unique share of the natural resources, that the oil companies come in and use, so therefore they share the revenues of the resources. … Its absurd to equate sharing the oil resources that all of these Alaskans have an ownership stake in, and trying to negotiate a deal with the oil companies that use those resources that —
Watch it:
Bounds is correct in that Alaska is “unique” in having such a vigorous wealth redistribution system. The state offers collective ownership of natural resources, which in turn generates revenue for the state. Using the Permanent Fund, the government distributes the natural resource rents to the general public.
Furthermore, Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share (ACES) programs helps redistribute windfall oil profits, bringing in so much money that the state needs no income or sales tax. This year ACES will provide every Alaskan with a check for an estimated $1,200. Palin boasts about giving oil money “back to the people.”
It’s unclear, however, how a state with such a strong tradition of progressive taxation that benefits “all” Alaskans — as Bounds himself stated — isn’t in any way “socialist.”
It’s unclear, however, how a state with such a strong tradition of progressive taxation that benefits “all” Alaskans — as Bounds himself stated — isn’t in any way “socialist.”
Because Tucker Bounds says so!
October 29th, 2008 at 7:11 pmSorry, Tucker, but “unique” means one of a kind, and Palin is just another lying, smearing, ignorant, hate-mongering Republican. She is anything but “unique”.
October 29th, 2008 at 7:11 pmThen Schuster asked why it’s any different in other states that don’t share the wealth like Louisiana. And if they’re so self sufficient why do they take more tax dollars back from the federal government than just about any other state.
October 29th, 2008 at 7:13 pmYou’d better hope the poor, backcountry Okies don’t get wind of this, or we’re going to have a rising conflagration of populist redistribution, throughout the south.
October 29th, 2008 at 7:14 pmYes! Governor Palin’s distribution of oil company wealth is not “socialism.” It’s “unique!”
And, John McCain’s use of the word “gook” is not “racism.” It’s “colorful character!”
And, people who blow up abortion clinics are not “terrorists.” They’re “discontent.”
October 29th, 2008 at 7:14 pmSARAH PALIN IS A SOCIALIST!!
Also, I heard she doesn’t love Jesus, and she wears white after Labor Day.

Does Tucker Bounds even understand the words coming out of his mouth? Obama is the “socialist” not Palin??

There’s a sexist joke in there that could very well be the death of me as a liberal, were I to utter it.
I think I’ll have another drink instead, and try to forget it…
October 29th, 2008 at 7:21 pm“Tucker the Intellectually Bound” joins “Joe the Plumber” as a waste of an interview.
“Sarah the Socialist Palin” is an energy expert for taxing big oil and spreading the wealth.
Hey Tucker, what other fungible resources are available for taxation? Water, air, CO2….

October 29th, 2008 at 7:24 pmEgad! Don’t they even try any more?
October 29th, 2008 at 7:25 pmBefore you know it Ms Palin will be shovelin’ snow in a jerkwater burb and completely forgotten but by a few weird oddball politcal historians on some liberal college campuses. Why are we even still amusing ourselves with her brief dressed up moment? I thought I would never be more embarassed for my country than that bizarre Stockdale dude or whatever his name was but this current weirdness has blown that out of the water.
October 29th, 2008 at 7:25 pmI think you and I and the rest of the ‘elite intelligensia’ seriously misunderestimate the appeal of la Palin to the truly stupid, the true believers, the born-again, bible-blathering bigots, as well as the sheer, raw numbers of such folks there are, out there, in fly-over Murka, just waiting to be rallied to the banner of Righteous, Wrong-headed St. OOOPIT.
I’ve lived both in and near a couple such places where such sorts of folks abound. Places absolutely awash in Dominionism, Eliminationism, Exceptionalism, all stewed together through generations of local in-breeding and narrow-mindedness.
Palin is a force. Yes, she’s a parvenu, yes she’s small-time hustler, a gifted grifter who knows with utter certainty where her bread is buttered.
The sloping forehead/ridged eye-brow/prognathous jaw segment of the population is huge, and she’s their Patron Saint.
October 29th, 2008 at 7:26 pmDidn’t Sarah Palin, just a few months ago, describe Alaska as “America’s Socialist State”? Or did I hear that wrong?
October 29th, 2008 at 7:26 pmI live in oil producing West Texas and I don’t get a unique check, Mr. Out of Bounds…
October 29th, 2008 at 7:26 pmThis clown reminds me of “Baghdad Bob” We are crushing the Americans the Iraqis are winning blah blah blah this clown is just as pathetic as the rest of the Republicans. I can not wait for Tusdays landslide when President Elect Obama gets ready for the White House!

We can’t even get royalties that are due.
ERICH PICA: What we’ve seen over the last 10 years or more is this culture of incompetence or a culture of coziness with the oil companies. And they’re not monitoring royalty payments that these companies have to pay for the oil they drill on public lands.

The panic on their faces these days is so evident. I must say I’m having a lot of fun watching it.
Hannity’s 15 minute rant the other day pretty much put him around the bend. I listened to some of what he said with utter amazement. I’m thinking that even people who support the right listened to Hannity and thought that he had gone completely crazy.

October 29th, 2008 at 8:01 pmTucker Bounds has got to near the top of the most obnoxious people ever. He’s a wind up doll who cannot stop talking to take a breath. Trudgin’ across the tundra . . .
OK, then, Mr Tucker Bounds, I ask you this: Will Gov Palin continue to fight for this benefit beyond Alaska by fighting for full payment of royalties due the American public for offshore oil production? Both past due from the Interior Dept “mistake” and future. (Her party opposes this position).
Why can’t the rest of the country be paid royalties for drilling in public waters? Private landowners are paid handsomely, why not the public.
October 29th, 2008 at 10:22 pmObama may just lose this election!!!
I’m really energized now that I see the polls tightening in every battleground state as well as nationally.
It’s even more fun to listen to the Democrats’ pleas for help!
Don’t they have enough campaign workers registering and voting illegally in Ohio already???
Why can’t Obama close the deal? He has:
1. >95% of the Black vote and they will turn out 100%
2. Most of the MSM who are totally in the tank for him
3. Bad economic news that happened just at the right time
4. The Republican part, which is clearly out of favor
5. 100’s of millions of dollars, much of it probably illegal
On and on!
So, geniuses, tell me. Why doesn’t he have this thing CLEARLY in the bag, hmmmmm?

“Dig out” is just a turn of phrase. A good friend arranged a gint music database for me and it’s all just a click away. But I might end up being sent to bed by dawn’s singing birds.
October 29th, 2008 at 10:46 pm#51, perhaps we want a definitive landslide in order to counteract the attempted theft of the vote that the Republicans will be trying.
October 29th, 2008 at 11:00 pmYou sound like SUCH a sore loser.
Can’t wait for Wednesday…
SKdeA,
You didn’t answer the question. I’m sure the Democrats would just LOVE a landslide. That’s why the MSM cites every skewed poll to try and intimidate our side. Try to make us think it’s a foregone conclusion. NOT!
The Democrats OWN internal polling is causing them to sweat bullets now.
So, tell me. Why isn’t Obama 10 – 15 points ahead, hmmmm? BTW, the Democrats themselves recognize he needs “ten to win.” That’s because it takes around 6 points to essentially be even with Republican candidates running for national office.
October 29th, 2008 at 11:15 pmTim just wants more George Bush lies. What’s the world without them to Republicans? We need to keep spreading the wealth upwards with Republican socialist policies don’t we?
October 29th, 2008 at 11:22 pmThis article is totally missing the point.
Obama’s version of spreading the wealth is to take it from working people and anyone else, scim off the top for the bureau and such and then redistribute some in whatever matter “make sense.”
Palin is talking about assets already owned by the people at large. Something that should be shared and is not really about redistribution. One of those rare cases where a government investment actually pays off.
October 29th, 2008 at 11:34 pmI don’t know what polls the stupid troll is blabbing about. Ohio has tightened but, so has Arizona where Ol’ Flippy is now running ads and robocalls. Virginia has moved from a tossup to “leaning Obama” with a 7.6% lead. That’s a pretty stong “lean”. Florida is unchanged, around +2% for Obama. Colorado, New Mexico and Indiana have all shown increasing leads for Obama in the last few days and Pennsylvania is showing Obama +11.
I guess it’s hard to admit that the “permanent majority” is gasping its last breath.
October 29th, 2008 at 11:42 pmI swear I thought I heard McCain talk about drilling for oil off the coast of Florida at a rally there (today?) and he told them that if he were the President that they would recieve their fair share of that oil drilling wealth…help me! Did I hear right?? Oh, yes…to big cheers!
October 29th, 2008 at 11:54 pmChrisSEA,
George Bush isn’t running for President, or haven’t you heard?
October 29th, 2008 at 11:55 pmpete,
If you don’t know, go look. If you think Obama is up by 11 in PA, you are likely looking at polls that have been “weighted” towards Democrats. Try looking at unbiased, independent polls or the information that’s leaking out from the Dems re: internal polling.
Regardless, I want you to tell me – Why hasn’t Obama simply put this one out of reach, hmmmmm?
October 30th, 2008 at 12:01 amTim,
October 30th, 2008 at 12:05 amPeople like you will be arrested and detained. Obama isn’t Bush. He will not allow people to destroy him. He will have an all volunteer youth corp that will arrest all those that speak out.
Limey Buster 2008,
Whoa! You are either very astute and being sarcastic or… horrors, you actually believe what you just said.
If it’s the latter, then you’ll fit right in with Obama’s Brown Shirts. Further, you can join up with Bill Ayer’s elites who once held meetings where they discussed the fact that in order to suceed with a Communist takeover of America 25 MILLION people would have to be “re-educated” or eliminated.
You would probably feel right at home in the former Pol Pot regime in Cambodia.
EugeneDebs, Pete, dbadass, freeman, ChrisSEA what say you? Do you agree with Limey Buster, hmmmm?
October 30th, 2008 at 12:15 amNo such luck, troll. It’s an average with the high (17%)and low(7%) thrown out. But, as you have pointed out, polls are always suspect. Most of them try to poll equal numbers of Reps and Dems when far more people are registered as Dems. And none of them call cell phones. I know quite a few people who don’t have landlines, myself included.
I think the turnouts are much more informative.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:21 amLike Obama drawing 100,000 in Colorado a few days after Ol’ Flippy addressed an enthusiastic crowd of 4,000. Big disparities in Florida and the reported 2-1 Dem to Rep ratio in early voting. Most indications are that the final tally won’t even be close.
I would guess that Limey Buster is a troll though it’s hard to be certain based on a single post. I can’t think of a sane person who would agree with that drivel.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:23 amLimey Buster 2008,
If you decide to join Obama’s “Youth Corps” (assuming he wins), you had better come armed to the teeth if you want me, my friend.
I’ll fill you so full of lead they’ll have to wheel you away using heavy equipment. Bet on it, Commie.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:24 ampete,
Well argued, but you only cite anecdotal evidence.
I’m still waiting for someone; anyone here to answer my question. If it’s so lopsided like you seem to think, why hasn’t this been reflected in the polling?
Why has Obama’s lead SHRUNK instead of growing. Why hasn’t he put this one out of reach, hmmmmm?
October 30th, 2008 at 12:27 amAs stipulated, polls are suspect and I’m not so sure that they are closing. And, if they are, there are as many reasons as there are polls. That’s why I use aggregates as sources.
As for why the race is close when logic would dictate a landslide there’s lots of reasons, from bigotry to the tumultuous economy. Angry, frightened, people don’t always act in predictable patterns and politics is weird at the best of times. But? It’s past my bed time.
G’night good people.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:47 amYou too trolls.
Its funny to watch them try to argue out of this. If its not socialism, it’s about as close as we can get here in the US, and way the heck closer than anything Obama has even proposed. It’s funny how conservatives don’t like facts when it’s a bother to them. http://straighttalkonmccain.blogspot.com/
October 30th, 2008 at 12:50 amTim said, ‘George Bush isn’t running for President, or haven’t you heard?”
Yes he is, it’s called John McCain (Bush III).
More failed conservative policies. And Geroge Bush is just more proof that under conservatives the economy tanks and jobless rates go up. That’s why we don’t want Bush III.

October 30th, 2008 at 7:05 ampalins preacher and american hating succesionist allies are discussed?
I was expecting to come here and he actual, honest, balanced discourse. I guess I’m lost. :)
I read some of these blogs and even agree with some, but I have to disagree with the posters on this one.
Alaska IS unique. They have no income or sales tax! Yippee! Wow. Doesn’t that make you all want to go and live there? No. There have to be incentives in place to draw people to the state, or would you rather simply hand it over to Canada or Russia?
This sort of “socialism”, and it is a sort, is COMPLETELY different than taking money from tax payers that have and giving it to those that don’t. I am okay with a progressive income tax, but the human behaviour is what it is. Tax too much and there is no incentive to be productive. That being said, I don’t believe in trickle down.
Perhaps what we should do is pay everyone the same within their field of work. Everyone is equal, yes? (in rights of course I agree). Pay doctors 100k. Period. Pay teachers 65K. Period. Pay accountants 75k. Period. Pay policemen 40k. Period. The government can make a list of all professions (and unskilled labor) and just decide! Cool. We will all work for the government. THAT is socialism. I doubt Mr. Obama has that intent, but who knows? I knew a psychologist once that told me parents’ job was to feed and house and clothe children. Otherwise, 2 years old and off to government education. Parents? Get out of the way. After all. They govenment knows best.
Cheers!

Isn’t giving oil money back to the people what Hugo Chavez is doing in Venezuela?
October 30th, 2008 at 7:36 amGive Tucker some slack, he’s a result of a botched abortion!
October 30th, 2008 at 7:49 amHow come I don’t see any reference to the “Doubletalk Express” which is what we’ve heard from McLame and Pa(l)in since their convention? The American Heritage definition is “1. Meaningless speech that consists of nonsense syllables mixed with intelligible words; gibberish. 2. Deliberately ambiguous or evasive language.” which is a perfect description of what comes out of the oral orifice of these two and their designated hucksters.
October 30th, 2008 at 9:22 amhey kevin11, if we are all equal, how come all Americans are not sharing in the oil wealth? Why are we not all sharing in the lumber wealth? Mainers should be getting checks from Poland Spring for extracting all that spring water. I live in New Hampshire and I want to get money for all that maple sugar that’s being extracted from our trees. We should all be getting hundreds of checks every month from each company that extracts wealth from our country, right? Hey here in New Hampshire it gets cold in the winter and nobody wants to live here so we should get free money too, right?
October 30th, 2008 at 9:49 amOnce upon a time, oil was discovered on the Oklahoma Territory reservations upon which had been forcefully settled Native American tribes after the tragic Trail of Tears ordered by Andrew Jackson, against an order of the Supreme Court, 1831. Then when the wealth came in, there was first of course an attempt to rob the goods by claiming the Indians did not own the ground more than three feet beneath the surface. Eventually some very wealthy tribes resulted, and forever more was the rustic redneck contempt for those who only stand by and are paid royalties for ownership of resources. It was equivalent to welfare, which is the cracker contempt citation, and meant Indians, later Arabs. Funny the bubblehead Alaskan and her redneck counterparts haven’t yet come in for a share of this scorn, although all they do up there is drink and wait for them gumint checks.
October 30th, 2008 at 10:34 amWhy do they keep trotting out this moron?
October 30th, 2008 at 10:40 amfrantaylor,
Hi frantaylor, Good to see some arguments! I lived in Maine for 9 years and I love New England, but to say that New Hampshire is the same as Alaska may be far fetched. You can drive 3 hours or so and be in Boston or drive to Montreal. Where can you go it Alaska? There are FAR fewer people willing to go to Alaska than would settle in New Hampshire if given the opportunity. I think the issue about forestry and water out of the Poland Pond are interesting. You probably noted that my tounge was firmly planted in my cheek when I stated that people should all be paid the same. That is crazy, and truly socialist. I am no expert in land rights in Alaska for the oil companies or the land rights for the railroads logging in NH. My point was that Alaska is unique, although it can be seen as a socialist element.
By the way, we DO share in oil and lumber wealth. It is call jobs and taxes. Joe the logger earns $75,000 per year and buys a Chrysler. This isn’t trickle down. It is the real economy. The facts are that Alaska is at a great disadvantage from the real economy.
Thanks for your insights. I think they are valid.
Best, Kevin
