Poll: Nearly a quarter of Texans erroneously believe that Obama is a Muslim.

A new poll from the University of Texas and the Texas Politics Project finds that nearly a quarter of Texans erroneously believe that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is a Muslim:

When asked to identify Obama’s religion, 45 percent of respondents accurately identified him as Protestant, however 23 percent erroneously identified him as Muslim.

Another 28 percent of Texans did not know Obama’s religion, while 0.2 percent of Texans believe that Obama is a Hindu. The poll’s sponsors did not speculate as to why so many Texans are mistaken about Obama’s faith.

While 32% of Texans did not realize they live in the United States. /snark off

  2. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

It’s Texas – what do you expect? /snark (sorta)

  3. paleolib says:

I speculate that approximately a quarter of Texans polled are willfully ignorant and live lives of quiet desperation, making the same mistakes over and over and wondering why the outcome doesn’t change.

  4. Nevar says:

I’m guessing about 23% of Texans believe the world is flat.
Never having gone more than 20 miles from their home town, I can understand why.

  5. Zooey says:

Life is tough. It’s tougher if you’re a stupid Texan.

  6. Patty says:

….ummmmm, as someone living in Texas, I’d like to apologize for the 23-percenters.

I’m thinking, though, they may be the same 23% that’s hanging onto George Dubya’s train, despite its derailing years ago.

No Child Left Behind? Unfortunately, we have evidence of Many Children Left Behind; then they become adults and continue their merry, ignorant ways.

We’re poking fun at Texas in a good natured way, Patty we all understand there are many sentient residents there.

Some of the already aggressive bullet-headed butt-heads in their oversized pickups have become even more ornery.

  17. Fan of Man says:

  18. DallasDemocrat says:

We do have a lot of backwater dummies in this HUGE state, but I would have to guess that a big portion of these people said they thought he was a Muslim just to try to further the falsehood. “If I say he’s a Muslim, more people will think he’s a Muslim.”

Don’t think that the dumb hicks in your state are any different. We just have more of ‘em!

a little long, but i’ve got to share this… the latest from my ditto-head in-law… it begins with a lament about poor joe the plumber and how the media has exposed his life… but, what do we REALLY know about barack obama? hmmm?

    [...]
Thanks to a lazy press corps we still don’t know what grades Obama made in college; how he got into Harvard; when he met Bill ‘the bomber’ Ayers; when he stopped doing illegal drugs; his medical history; whether he still smokes cigarettes; the extent of his affiliation with socialist/communist organizations; why he’s no longer a licensed attorney; whether he lied on his Bar application;—-

    Whether he’d qualify for a security clearance if he were just an ‘average Joe;’ what passport he used to travel to Pakistan in 1981; who his ex-girlfriends are; whether he was or still is an Indonesian citizen; why his Kenyan grandmother insists he was born there; whether he was ever legally named Barry Soetoro or anything else besides Barack Hussein Obama—–;

Why he needed the help of a crook to purchase his family home; where he was on Nov. 6 and 7, 1999; what the long-version of his birth certificate says; why he helped an anti-American, pro-Islamic candidate for Kenyan President against US interests; why he listened to Rev. Wright’s sermons for 20 years; how many times he took his kids to a Rev. Wright sermon; what he actually did as chair of the Annenberg Challenge; the depth of his relationship with ACORN.
    [...]

    so much stoopid…

as I wheel around with an Obama bumper sticker.

Nevar — glad you brought up Obama bumper stickers — in the Dallas area, they’re as plentiful as McCain stickers; same goes for yard signs.

While that’s encouraging, we have the reality of our Republican Representative Pete (my rally was in a Las Vegas not-strip-just-tasteful-de-clothing joint) Sessions, who joined in the fray at my early-voting place to tell a young male protester, “You couldn’t hold a job if you had to.”

Texas: It’s a Whole Other Country.

  22. BillinChicago says:

This is why I keep saying this guy is the new standard bearer for the GOP:

“He is a law school graduate, but his admission to the Illinois bar was blocked in the 1970s after a psychiatric finding of “moderately severe character defect manifested by well-documented ideation with a paranoid flavor and a grandiose character.” ”

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/13/us/politics/13martin.html

This is not just about a few bad apples on the fringe. The GOP base is increasingly becoming a psychiatric phenomenon, played out on a sociological scale, rather than just an ideological movement.

  23. henry wallace says:

No one really thinks Obama is Muslim in any state..the 23 percenters are known Bush/Chaney/McCain/Palin liars and deniers. They think Bush/Chaney are doing a spectacular job and consistently vote against their own interests.

I’m in Idaho, and I know that 23% of Texans have company. ;)

  25. Perry logan says:

Texans are no more ignorant than other Americans. They’re just more proud of it.

  26. DieNowForPeace says:

As a 3rd generation Texan who finally found someone else in my family voting for Obama (my little old great aunt), I can tell you why.

Most Texans view themselves as outlaws, rugged individuals who think they’re above everyone else. This “go-it-alone” attitude was necessary to help bring Texas out of the great depression, which was especially hard on those who lived in the vast, dead open spaces of despair in western portions of the state. This prideful arrogance was bolstered by the independence and power of the early oil boom in Texas and the wealth that was discovered within our state.

Our current, miserably failed leader is the spittin’ image of this ignorant, mis-placed pride.

What worked 75 years ago doesn’t play too well in today’s mass-info seeking society in which a sense of community is so desperately needed.

In short, stupid people will believe what they want to believe, no matter what, and it’s likely that the national average who believe the same BS is just as high.

Stupidity doesn’t recognize state borders… but Texans will always brag, no matter how stupid and wrong they might be.

  27. stewarjt says:

Don’t mess with (what we know for sure, but just ain’t true in) Texas.

  28. DieNowForPeace says:

.the 23 percenters are known Bush/Chaney/McCain/Palin liars and deniers.

    Or better yet, PALINITES.

  29. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

The poll’s sponsors did not speculate as to why so many Texans are mistaken about Obama’s faith.

That’s easy. Because they are s t u p i d and they get all their news from FOX.

  30. 5th Estate says:

The poll’s sponsors did not speculate as to why so many Texans are mistaken about Obama’s faith.

Had they asked where they got these erroneous beliefs from, this poll would have served a more practical purpose than simply counting the number of ignoramuses in Texas.

  31. EnnuiDivine says:

“0.2 percent of Texans believe that Obama is a Hindu”

come on, now. there hasn’t even been a baseless smear to suggest that one

  32. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

I have a friend who is supposedly voting, not for McKooKoo or Obama but states that she will write in. HAH! She isn’t even registered (thank goodness). I am willing to bet that a majority of these people will not be voting because they are to lazy. Obviously they are as they will not bother to look at the facts at all.

  33. Arctic Ghetto says:

That is about the % of Texans who misidentified the nation to our immediate south. I am not kidding. This isn’t a shot at Texas. Education across our nation is trashed and the media is a running Jerry Springer show.

  34. NoMoreBush says:

Is it too late to sell Texas (well perhaps even give) it back to Mexico — except for Austin of course.

  35. Nevar says:

“0.2 percent of Texans believe that Obama is a Hindu”

Well, most of the erroneously informed would have never known about any other religion if it wasn’t for 9/11.

  36. livelongandprosper says:

And what percentage of those 24% watch only Fox for their news source? I say it is not a coincidence.

  38. dbadass says:

But what percentage know that he is a black man?

  39. Angry McAngus says:

Wow! Amazing! I wonder what percentage of people in other states are low information, bigoted Republican loyalists? I guess all the people we’ve seen on clips the last month of people calling Obama a Muslim must really be from Texas. I did not realize that Texas had a monopoly on dumb asses.

Load up the truck, Granny, let’s move to Oklahoma or Iowa or Georgia or Ohio where there ain’t nobody watching Fox News and believing it!

I guess Joe the Plumber must really be from Texas. Western Pennsylvania is full of transplanted Texans.

    Who’d a thunk it?

  44. Angry McAngus says:

Seriously, I’m guessing from some of the responses here that many of you believe that the results in your own state would be significantly different. I’m wondering on what basis? In whose state is Obama carrying 77%? Where is a quarter of the population not bamboozled by Republican propaganda?

I’m not denying there’s not a shiteload of dumbass in Texas. Just tell me where this poll wouldn’t produce the same result.

  45. Winski says:

This kind of lunacy shouldn’t surprise anyone…ESPECIALLY coming from texas…

There is a blog post in the Houston Chronicle TODAY titled “Why You Should Vote For John McCain”, which is a serious attempt by a local to convince folks that we should just vote for this lunatic and “McCain understands that this is not a play where we write our parts. This is the real world, in need of a real leader whose past we don’t question, but honor.”

    Here’s the link if you’re interested..(OR not.)

About 30 percent of the US population uses the Fixed News Channel for their primary source of information. And about 23 million people a day listen to Rush Limbaugh and spew his vile misinformation. dbadass Says:

None of B.O.’s past backs up his claim of change. His rise to power is indicative of business as usual politics. Look at how he forced Alice Palmer off of the ballot in Illinois.
She’s the former state senator who picked Obama to be her successor back in the mid-90s. The Rev. Wright flat out lie. The Bill Ayers lie. The Rezko deal with the purchase of his mansion and the small plot of land adjacent to his property. The video of him toasting Rashid Khalidi. His ideological background with Marxism and Socialism. The fact that his idea of fairness is raising taxes and introducing socialized medicine. And numerous of other reasons but it’s a start.

  55. enb14 says:

If only we could get Texas to split its electoral votes. Here in Dallas, based on yard signs, bumper stickers, and comments on the Dallas Morning News’ site, I’d say Obama is running at better than 50%. And the Houston Chronicle endorsed him. As in most states, it’s the rural areas that are the problem — and we seem to have more of them than anybody else (look at a map!).

  56. misshusseinmolly says:

I suspect that there are a number of people in Texas (and everywhere) who assign ethnicity and religion based upon a person’s name, whether true or not. If you have a “Muslim-sounding” name, you are Muslim. If you have a “Jewish-sounding” name, you are Jewish. If you have a “Spanish-sounding” name, you are Hispanic. Whether you actually are or not. Your name brands you — in the minds of these people.

I’m not sure this kind of ignorance can be cured.

  57. judyinnm says:

The really sad part of this is that it even matters. One’s spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof) should be private; not something one “wears on one’s sleeve”.

  58. Leftside Annie says:

  59. tsdivadani says:

I’m an avid reader and Obama supporter and resident of Austin (which is unlike the rest of Texas entirely), but this is flat out a textbook logical fallacy, namely a hasty generalization.

The study dealt with 613 Texans (not nearly a reasonable sample size) and for the headline to say “Nearly a quarter of Texans…” is simply ridiculous. I usually call these sorts of things out all day by Right wing assertions, but it’s important to call it out here as well.

For the record, Austin is like Portland, Oregon, but warmer. I lived in Portland for 7 years and Austin resembles it very much. The only problem with Austin, is that it’s surrounded by Texas…

Around the time of the last presidential election, I had gotten unsolicited emails from my relatives in Texas telling me how liberals are going to hell, how I’m evil for supporting abortion, and how their toddlers all know how to fire guns and that the second amendment is a God-given right. I was just scratching my head because they had no clue what my views are on anything and we were not exactly close. I didn’t care if they voted for Bush, but I was just really disturbed by their unprovoked attacks. So if the rest of the people in Texas are anything like that, they have my support in seceding from the union.

  78. DaTruth says:

I don’t really care about Obama’s religion. In this day and age there’s a lot occult symbolism that many people don’t notice. To make it into the White House a political figure must be familiar with occult symbolism, secret societies, masonic monuments, and occult practices. Religion is irrelevant considering it takes quite a bit of occult knowledge and practice to make it in the White House regardless of what political party or religion the leader is affiliated with.

  79. yoshimi1 says:

I live in Texas and believe the 23%. I was livid a few weeks ago when my Mom told me she thought Obama was Muslim. I asked her where she received the information and she said she could not remember, but that everyone she knew thought he was a Muslim. “Who doesn’t think that?” was the reply. I’ve since sent her many emails to convince her otherwise.

Granted, some of the family members she was speaking about do live in rural areas and do not seek out information. But my parents live in a large city and voted for Kerry in 2004.

I think there is a different cause than just being stupid. Many people in the state of Texas have a huge mistrust of all government and politicians. Conspiracy theories are created around anything and everything. Unfortunately, this seems to be one of them and it seems to go a little deeper than just thinking he is Muslim. (thinking he is cohorts with certain people, etc.)

It’s very sad – I’m glad I live in a city where everyone loves Obama…and knows his background and story.

Democratic “talking points”: get us out of Iraq, fix the infrastructure, enact universal healthcare, fix the broken military, make sure the wealthy pay their fair share, etc…

Republican “substantive and relevant issues”: Bill Ayers, The Reverand Wright, Obama’s a Muslim, Obama’s a terrorist, Obama’s a terrorist sympathizer, Obama’s a socialist, Obama’s a Marxist, Obama is not a citizen…

  92. 49erDem says:

Hey McCain-supporter JT: let’s have your “intellectual” discussion. I’ll start:

How is it that republicans call a 36% top marginal rate “socialism” but a 33% top marginal rate “America First?”

At what point between 33 and 36 do you get to socialsm?

Bonus discussion: since Ronald Reagan was in charge and backed the Earned Income Tax Credit which distributes tax money to working poor, would Ronald Reagan be considered by you to be a “socialist?”

I guess JT the McCain supporter doesn’t have the stomach for an “intellectual” discussion about “socialism.”

How about war. When your guy says he wants “victory with honor,” what exactly do you think he means? Or, to put it another way, how do you know you have achieved “victory” with an occupation and who exactly have you beaten?

I’m assuming that when you complained about the lact of “intellectual discussion,” you were being honest. Was that a shaky assumption?

  94. MapleStreet says:

    83. JT – yes you are so right. Obama is a Muslim commie pinko marxist communist african american who grew up anywhere but Kansas and Hawaii.

BTW – you do know that he is black, don’t you ?

JT: “In which case most TP posters would flunk because they mostly regurgitate Dem talking points and get upset when anybody debates substantive and relevant issues.”

JT, you are pure, unadulterated bull. I’ve given you all the opportunities anyone would need to engage in a debate on “substantive and relevant issues.” But you don’t really want to debate, do you. You just want to whine and complain about the unfairness of it all. Boohoooboohooooboofickinhoo!

Why would most of the world be misinformed about the faith of a candidate who has been campaigning for two years? What would make the knowledge about his faith so ….nebulous: some believe he’s a Christian and some believe he’s a Muslim?

Could it be that BHO is using misinformation or lack of information to his advantage?

For instance, BHO could have squashed any question about the nation of his birth by simply releasing a copy of his birth certificate, but he didn’t.

    Why didn’t he?

Why did his campaign lawyers not response within the 30 days period to the suit filed in PA? This suit claimed the BHO was not a “natural born citizens” of the U.S.

Is it to BHO’s advantage to not prove that he’s a U.S. citizen?

Wow! You all support Obama because you are tired of the divisiveness and petty politics of the past 8 years, yet you are slamming on your fellow Americans who live in Texas. Wow! Clearly a case of “do as I say, not as I do.”
    __________________________________________________________

Slamming my fellow Americans who live in Texas? Nonsense. Just the stupid ones. Remember that according to this poll, 45% correctly identified Obama’s religion as Protestant — more than incorrectly identified it as Muslim.

I’m one of the people who believes that religion should not be relevant. But Obama’s religion has received so much scrutiny and exposure that those who don’t know he’s a Christian just haven’t been paying attention.

His father was a Muslim from Kenya.

His step-father was a Muslim, and he went to a Muslim school in a Muslim country as a child.

He is quote as saying, from “Audacity of Hope,” page 261:
“I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.” (bit doesn’t think this is what a Christian would say even if Muslims were the objects of discrimination. )

He has a 100% rating from NARAL, which would seem to bit, to raise the question of whether or not BHO is a Christian or a Muslim. (Conservative Christians see abortion as denying the value of God’s gift of life.)

It is reported that laws, from committees which he chaired, were not passed to protect newborns who had survived abortion attempts, because BHO didn’t support these laws. (Now in truth how many abortionists are going to let a newborn survive?)

So if he’s not Muslim, what is he beside enigmatic?

    He’s cunning.

Did you actually READ JTAG’s post before responding? Or did you just unwrap one of your pre-packaged responses and blast it?

JTAG wasn’t claiming that anyone in Texas was disagreeing with his/her ideology. He/she was commenting on the results of this poll, and how many people still believe Obama is a Muslim, when that has been debunked many, many times.

I see it as an issue of ignorance, not ideology difference. Apparently, JTAG does, too. I think any sensible person would.

Obama has “released” his birth certificate. He has had stamped, certified copies of it released from Hawaii to various news organizations who wanted to verify authenticity, and he has it posted on his website. So far, nobody who has examined it has claimed it’s a forgery — in fact, everybody has verified its authenticity. Right now, Obama’s birth certificate has become the most scrutinized document in our country since the Zapruder film (meanwhile, we can’t even get McCain and Palin to release their medical records). Yet Obama’s detractors continue to bleat for him to “release” it.

As far as why Obama’s lawyers wouldn’t play ball with the suit in PA — why legitimize something so silly and frivolous? That’s a no-brainer. (apparently the judge in PA thought so, too — the case was dismissed).

If there was any serious evidence to suggest that Obama (or any other presidential or veep candidate) was not eligible to be POTUS, the Feds would have caught up with that by now. So give it a rest, or find something more important to snipe about.

bit doesn’t believe a person of the Muslim faith is qualified to be POTUS, or a congressman for that matter.

This isn’t bit’s beef with BHO. bit believes BHO has been made out to be many things that he’s simply not. Seems to be the politician’s skill to make voters believe what it is the voters want to believe about any one candidate.

Since bit is a single issue voter the NARAL 100% is enough for bit to vote Republican.

You’re wrong, but you would get partial credit.

You really want us to think that a Muslim father would name his son with a Jewish name? Perhaps you’re referring to the Biblical reference to a Barach, and perhaps you want us to think BHO was named after a Biblical character?

The key here is that both language – Hebrew and Arabic – are spoken by Semitic peoples( those who descended from Noah’s son Shem), so there is a point of commonality.

Unless you have a BHO story where he says his father gave him a Jewish name, bit will assume it’s a name common to both languages.

  110. dbadass says:

Why does bitblt no believe a Muslim is qualified to be president? Does bit believe a Jew can be?
