Bachmann: ‘The People’ Don’t Care That I Called For McCarthyite Investigation Into ‘Anti-American’ Liberals

bachromney.jpg On Oct. 17, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball and called for a McCarthyite investigation into the “anti-American” activities of liberals: “I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America?”

Yesterday in a Minnesota Public Radio debate, Bachmann dismissed the significance of her remarks, saying that no one in the state even cares:

BACHMANN: Well Gary, that is not an issue that has been a part of the campaign, and it’s not a part of the campaign, and it’s not what people are interested in. If they were, that’s something we’d be talking about. But it isn’t what people have been asking me about. More than anything, they’re nervous about their pocketbook —

Q: Nobody is concerned about your comments on Hardball?

BACHMANN: Not when I’ve been out. … The only people who bring that up are the media. It’s not the people.

Listen here:

Unfortunately for Bachmann, Minnesotans were paying close attention to her comments and strongly disapproved. According to a recent MPR poll, nearly four in 10 voters said that were less likely to support Bachmann after her comments on Hardball; just 8 percent said they were more likely. Additionally, letters to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune were overwhelmingly against Bachmann:

The newspaper received more than 150 letters on Bachmann’s statement, only two of which took the congresswoman’s side. John M. Huberty of Elk River asked, “I, for one, would like to know exactly how one qualifies as anti-American in her eyes.” St. Louis Park Mayor Jeff Jacobs wrote, “Democracy depends on people who have the courage to stand up [and be critical]; for it is only from the crucible of disagreement among Americans that the best decisions are made.” “The only thing that needs to be investigated is Ms. Bachmann’s sanity,” according to Mike Gibson of Seattle. And Norman Korn of Eden Prairie wrote, “The ghost of Joe McCarthy is back and representing the Sixth District of Minnesota. Have you no sense of decency, ma’am?”

Her Democratic opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg, said that he raised $620,000 in donations within five days of Bachmann’s gaffe.

Transcript:

Q: Do you think that the media should be investigating Barack Obama and members of Congress for their possible anti-American views?

BACHMANN: You know, Gary, that is not what I said in recent remarks. And the number one thing that people have been concerned about when they talk to me when I’m all over the district campaigning, has been on the bailout. That’s their main concern. They’re very upset about the bailout –

Q: We’ll talk about the bailout, but —

BACHMANN — and they thank me over and over again for that.

Q: But in terms of that particular issue, do you think the media should investigate Barack Obama and members of Congress for their possible anti-American views?

BACHMANN: Well Gary, that is not an issue that has been a part of the campaign, and it’s not a part of the campaign, and it’s not what people are interested in. If they were, that’s something we’d be talking about. But it isn’t what people have been asking me about. More than anything, they’re nervous about their pocketbook —

Q: Nobody is concerned about your comments on Hardball?

BACHMANN: Not when I’ve been out. I’m going to a Chamber luncheon afterward. I’ve been to more Chamber luncheons this last week. I’ve been out yesterday in an energy forum roundtable. I’ve been out in St. Cloud for various meetings. The only people who bring that up are the media. It’s not the people.

BACHMANN: You know, Gary, that is not what I said in recent remarks.

Yes, Michele, it is exactly what you said.

  2. misshusseinmolly says:

I’m sure Bachmann has some other reason as to why she’s suddenly trailing in the polls after her Hardball appearance, since “the people” don’t care about such things.

  3. belac says:

Why is the media persecuting her? Why won’t they just do their jobs and begin the persecution of suspected ‘anti-Americans’???
    Oh, wait…

  4. misshusseinmolly says:

Does Bachmann know that McCarthyism is anti-American?

  5. alpuz3 says:

Bachmann has shown to be a nut case from the day she took office. Minnesota can do much better in a candidate representing the State. People of Minnesota are nothing like what Bachmann respresents.

  9. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I’m sure the people she talks to don’t ask her about it because she only talks to people who support her.

I think the huge influx of donations to her opponent should have told her that people were talking about it.

She isn’t even my representative and I will be very happy to have her gone. Every time I see a picture of her with her “deer in the headlights” eyes, I shudder.

  10. raynman says:

what’s scary is that there are people who really would like us to return to the McCarthy-esque investigation into those they think are ‘different’

    “In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
    And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
    And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up.”

  11. alpuz3 says:

    oh, that’s good, Wayne.

If the people don’t care about her call for a political witch hunt, then we need to be very nervous about her district. And, is she saying that all that money her opponent received came solely from the ‘librul media?’

  14. Joe Sixpack says:

I know what some of you people are thinking: she’s a flinty-eyed opportunistic skank. Some of you even think she’s a loud-mouthed, rightwing, conservative idealogue who refuses to allow her children to attend public schools which she claims is the root of all evil in children.

And sure, she headed a drive to have intelligent design be given equal time with evolution in Science classes. So I am sure some of you would call her a narrow-minded, hawk-faced, anti-science religous fanitic and far-right zealot.

Go ahead. Call her all that. Call her a twit.

    Just see if I care.

    Michele Bachmann is a narrow-minded, hawk-faced, anti-science, anti-education, religious fanatic. And far-right twit.

Ooo, yeah. That hit the spot.

  19. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

When Ms. Bachmann says “the people,” she is referring to the Bush crime family. Is being both cute and stupid the latest trend for Republican women? Maybe Ms. Bachmann should consider moving from Minnesota to neighboring Wisconsin, the home of Joe the McCarthyite.

    alphainfinityomega Says:
Who gets to decide exactly who or what is pro or anti-American?

….and what happens to them or that afterward?

    Excellent questions.

Now, WHO decides? Well, that is obvious — “The Decider (TM)”. Failing that, right wing radio hosts can prepare that litmus test (and you know, that is really the “media” she would want to be in command of such a hunt).

What happens to them? Well, they can’t be deported (most of them, at least), since they are natural Americans. As much as she’d like, they can’t be gunned down in the street (not immediately — you have to work up to that point). So, to start with, they lose all their rights, becoming “less than citizens” — perhaps tattooed and required to wear blue shirts designating their anti-American status. Once that sets in, they can start to be confined when they break the law (which includes attempting to act like they have rights, such as free speech, or for owning things that they should not, or for having the wrong friends, or being seen walking on a “free-American sidewalk, etc.). Once they are all in camps they can be made to labor for corporations for cheap. We can play it by ear from there. Maybe a new sport to enact in Alaska: liberal hunting — release a few and then hunt them down by helicopter. What fun!

  27. ralph the wonder llama says:

Q: Nobody is concerned about your comments on Hardball?

BACHMANN: Not when I’ve been out. … The only people who bring that up are the media. It’s not the people.

    This is kind of amusing.

In order to defuse a potent campaign issue, Rep. Bachmann has to confess that when she goes on national TV, what she says is ignored by “the people”. They don’t care.

How embarrassing is that? I mean, really.

  28. CageyCretin says:

Go to a conservative blog and suggest that she is correct and that all of the “Anti-American Americans” discovered should be executed. The positive responses to this kind of commentary will frighten you.

This took me to the WeightWatchers website. Does this mean that overweight people are against Obama?

    HMMMMMM!

  92. ElBruce says:

Gosh Michelle, if people don’t care, then why don’t you repeat those statements, perhaps expand on them somewhat? Why would you be interested in semi-apologizing and blaming Matthews for what you said?

Just go with it. If nobody cares, then just go ahead and say it loud – I’M MCARTHYITE AND I’M PROUD!

So before we start deciding who is “American” and “Anti-American” shouldn’t we focus on defining each term?

I agree with her 50%. The 50% is that she forgot to include conservatives in her plan.
A media expose DC could only help the non-right.

Hey, Name T. Occupation, how do you feel about:
    1) CEOs reaping $M while laying you off. IMHO, a CEO damaging a company to the point where it has to shit-can people should be required to forgo hes (his+hers) and other upper management bonuses and reduce their salaries before letting people go. It seems to me that Pig-f@cker T. CFO is more responsible than X T Peon/Pawn.
    2) Corps increasing profits, especially those not shared (and none are ever shared equitably), by shipping jobs overseas and shit-canning you, Pat T. Expendable.
    3) Corps avoiding taxes by playing games with offshore actions in order to avoid taxes, which you, Pat T. Taxpayer can’t do; and are, in fact, taxed more to make up for the shortfall.
    4) Executives of the companies which caused the current financial meltdown giving themselves $50-$70 Billion in payouts from OUR $700 billion. This *is* happening, as reported by the BBC in an interview with Dennis Kucinich (D’OH!)and on NPR’s _On_Point_.
    5) The increase in per capita wealth of the top 1% and 5% versus Sean T 95%ers since Reagan sold us out to the wealthy. Even, “to make it fair”, percentage wise.
    6) The costs of No-bid contracts to war profiteers versus, say, the cost of medical insurance.
    7) The 95%ers adjusted income after accounting for health care and inflation caused by the Oilgarchy’s rapacious behavior.

    ad nauseum (literally).

Oh yes, a spotlight on DC would be very nice indeed.
    Run. roach, run.

Let’s add outlawing divorce to the “protect marriage” initiatives and see how that goes over. Nearly 100% of divorces break up marriages. Divorce is part of the real right’s agenda to enrich lawyers and destroy the fabric of the family. A WMD project, if you will, trying to destroy the US by a chain reaction of broken (or fissioned)Nuclear families.

You are all fake Progressives. I want progress and know that Obama will finish off the GOP and arrest its leaders. We need to dismantle the republican Party and make sure only the Democrats have power. This must be achieved to have progress.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    Oops. I’d recommended that post.
I do think the treasonous GOP leaders should be arrested and imprisoned. And I do think Bachmann is treasonous.
I guess banning the whole GOP party might be going too far, though.
Though the Germans banned the Nazis, and I think that was a good idea.

  111. lewagner says:

    Limey Buster 2008 Says:

Yes, The Democrats should be the only party allowed to hold office. They care about people and stand for progress. The GOP is against progress and they must be banned. Many Obama volunteers agree with me and it is Obama’s true agenda. We are going to have a one party state!

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Banning the ciminal Nazi party didn’t make Germany a one-party state.
Neither would banning the criminal GOP make the US a one-party state.
No one has ever said the Democrats should be the only party allowed to hold office.
    You are full of sh*t.

This is supposed to be a snopes verified quote
