Sharp Rise in Tax Revenue to Pare U.S. Deficit

WASHINGTON, July 12 – For the first time since President Bush took office, an unexpected leap in tax revenue is about to shrink the federal budget deficit this year, by nearly $100 billion.

What letter did you scratch on yourself, “liberalhater”?

Now there might be lots of reasons why they’re against you. Sure, they’d like to see a black guy become President. But there were plenty of women who voted against Hillary in the primary, who might have liked to see a woman become President, so that can’t entirely be it.

The real reason they’re against you is that your party has been against them for decades. Yeah, there have been some superficial attempts to reach out to minorities, particularly in 2000. But there wasn’t any policy to back the words. In fact, the policies of the Republican party specifically disenfranchise and exclude minority voters and your politics pretty much blame them for everything. Wall Street crash? Uppity black folks thought they could own homes, that’s what did it. Declining wages? Must be illegal immigrants from Mexico.

Your party has never thought of minorities as a potential part of its constituency – people whose interests it sought to represent. There’s only one rule that explains the policies and philosophy of the Republican party, and that’s “whatever the rich want.” You don’t represent anybody else, you rather manipulate them into voting against their interests and in the interests of the plutocracy.

That’s ending with this election, and unless the RP comes up with an actual bedrock philosophy, instead of some fancy packaging for why rich folk should get whatever they want, it’s going to end too. Economic conservatism is nothing more than moral evil – mere greed – packaged to look like a political philosophy. You’re going to have to do better, because right now the RP looks pretty much like one of those wackjob third parties that everyone ignores every cycle.

Black vs. White in elections is also going the way of the dinosaur. When it doesn’t work this time, no political strategist worth the money will ever recommend it again, in any situation. A party that doesn’t seek to represent the interests of minority voters is never going to win a major election cycle in the 21st century.

Stick to your guns and you’re done for. If you ever want to come back, you’re going to have to invent Republicanism 2.0. I’d recommend as a starting point actually looking at what policies would look like that put some meat on past talking points, because you’ve got some pretty good phrases to recycle: “compassionate conservatism” and “ownership society” are two. Those with the general notion of maximizing economic mobility might be a good foundation to build again.
