Palin: Media threatening my First Amendment rights.

palinweb3.jpgDuring an interview with conservative radio host Chris Plante this morning, Sarah Palin said that because the media have described her criticism of Barack Obama’s associations with Bill Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Right as negative campaigning, that “may constitute an attack that threatens a candidate’s free speech rights under the Constitution.” ABC News reports:

“If [the media] convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations,” Palin told host Chris Plante, “then I don’t know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media.”

How Different Media Have Covered the General Election

MSNBC stood out for having less negative coverage of Obama than the press generally (14% of stories vs. 29% in the press overall) and for having more negative stories about McCain (73% of its coverage vs. 57% in the press overall).

These findings augment what was learned from a broader report on campaign media coverage released a week earlier entitled “Winning the Media Campaign: How the Press Reported the 2008 General Election.” That study found that in the media overall—a sample of 43 outlets studied in the six weeks following the conventions through the last debate—Barack Obama’s coverage was somewhat more positive than negative (36% vs. 29%), while John McCain’s, in contrast, was substantially negative (57% vs. 14% positive). The report concluded that this, in significant part, reflected and magnified the horse race and direction of the polls.

I have a couple of observations here.

One — Palin’s interpretation of the First Amendment appears to be that she has the right to say anything she wants (even if it’s not true), but nobody else has the right to criticize what she says.

Two — the media are correct in assessing her campaign style as “negative” (unless, of course, Palin’s assertion that Obama has been “palling around with terrorists” was meant in a positive way). They probably could have gone so far as to call it “slanderous” and still have been correct.

Is that goon_golly in there, selectively cherrypicking in the hope that no one else has actually read the linked article. Because that’s some selective editing there, dopey.

    Right after that paragraph:

On the Fox News Channel, the coverage of the presidential candidates is something of a mirror image of that seen on MSNBC.

The tone of CNN’s coverage, meanwhile, lay somewhere in the middle of the cable spectrum, and was generally more negative than the press overall.

On the evening newscasts of the three traditional networks, in contrast, there is no such ideological split. Indeed, on the nightly newscasts of ABC, CBS and NBC, coverage tends to be more neutral and generally less negative than elsewhere. On the network morning shows, Sarah Palin is a bigger story than she is in the media generally.

And on NBC News programs, there was no reflection of the tendency of its cable sibling MSNBC toward more favorable coverage of Democrats and more negative of Republicans than the norm.

You’re just as pathetic as ever, regardless of what you’re calling yourself.

    What Liberal Bias??????

Bam…again…that critical thinking class I mentioned.

Ok, we have candidate A who is running a very negative campaign, who chose a very unqualified person as VP and who, on a daily basis, lies about his competition.

Then we have candidate B who is running a positive campaign, picked a super qualified VP and who does not lie about his opposition.

Now take the press. They are reporting on Candidate A (who is a negative candidate) and Candidate B (who is a positive candidate). They report what they see day after day. If they did not report on all the negativity of Candidate B and did nothing but smear Candidate B, you would have Faux Noise, the wholly owned and operated subsidiary of the RNC.

In reality Bam, the so-called “liberal” MSM has been quite good to McCain/Palin. Have they reported on all the flip-flops McCain has made on all major issues? Have they reported on Keating 5? Have they reported on Palin’s pastor? Have they reported on Palin’s cozy relationship to the AIP?

That is exactly right and the crux of the matter. Either that, or it’s there just in case she forgets her own name. She HAS been asked to memorize a lot for this campaign, you know — and stuff does start falling out the mental cracks.

I hate spoiling everyone’s fun, but I think that photo is from Palin’s run for governor, not VP. Especially given the wardrobe, which doesn’t look much like Nieman-Marcus.

    RaptureReady Says:

Allow the media to scrutinize you, because we already know that they are controlled by liberals.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Oh my goodness how did I miss that last ignorant statement? And I complimented you. Well it was a good post except for that last bit of hivemind stupidity. As for THAT. You are a liar and a fool. YOU are controlled by your Limborg masters who TELL you what to think and you dutifully regurgitate it without the shame that OUGHT to come from being so embarassingly ignorant

  105. RUCerious says:

Badger, that would have to include brass kazoo bands as well.

  106. RUCerious says:

What brand of hair blender does ImPalin use?

  107. pete says:

Don’t feel bad EugeneDebs. I think we want the RaptureRetard to “see the light” and it did make more sense than anything else I’ve seen from him. Though I guess it could still be a case of name-jacking.

  108. pete says:

And, speaking of retarded rapturites, did you guys catch the story about the fundies praying to a false idol on Wall Street?

    http://wonkette.com/403920/jesus-people-pray-that-false-idol-will-save-gods-economy

  109. dasm says:

Negative campaigning? I call most of Palin’s diatribes lies. Dishonest, easily proven lies. She even lies about herself!

    rocks911 Says:
5 short days and we can forget this bimbo and the national nightmare visited on us by the lunatic fringe.

Unfortunately, I don’t think that we will see the last of her.

But hey, she wants to talk? I say: “Go right ahead.” But I have a hard time seeing how she is able to say anything with that foot perpetually in her mouth.

  111. cage free brown says:

we haven’t seen the last of her. the only part of the GOP that’s got ANY mojo right now are the church-goin’ sons of guns and they LOVE HER! she’s one of them. more than W. was.

  112. cage free brown says:

I am SO sick of right wingers blasting the nozzle of “mainstream media” even as they suckle on it.

    I mean, come on!
TWO DAYS after most people learned her NAME they knew her little baseball stats of what a hockeymomgunownerdownsmom she was. who told us all that stuff? the mainstream media!!
    what a bunch of crybabies!!

one they bust her and Joe the Nimrod for they bowshit, they act like something’s happened to them. meanwhile they reap the rewards of being fast tracked to the tip of everybody’s tongues.

you don’t like the mainstream media? fine. go back to that hole they found you in.

  113. Briseadh na Faire says:

    NOTE TO SARAH:

THE CONSTITUTION PREVENTS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FROM IMPINGING ON YOUR RIGHT TO FREEDOM OF SPEECH. THE 1ST AMENDMENT DOES NOT PROHIBIT A PRIVATE CORPORATION FROM CENSORING YOUR SPEECH, NOR REACTING TO YOUR SPEECH.

Forgive the captials, but someone should really take her aside and tell her what the Constitution says and means.

To paraphrase Forrest Gump, ‘Mama says stupid is as stupid does. Sarah does stupid real well. And that’s all I have to say about that.’

  114. zuch says:

I’ve had my fill with RW eedjits that have not the slightest clue what the First Amendment says, much less how courts have resolved First Amendment jurisprudence. Feh.

Can we get such non-lawyers (you know, like McInsane and Palin?) to STFU about matters of law the know nothing about?

    Cheers,

  115. tombaker says:

    i.q. : 83

    bye bye now, special lady

  116. fletc3her says:

Well she is good for a big belly laugh every now and again. I give her that.

  117. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Could someone PLEASE explain to Caribou
    >Barbie what the First Amendment says and means?

Also, while you’re at it, explain to her that the only people who can violate a person’s consitutional rights (other than the 13th + 15th amendment) are government actors, NOT private media..

only in a seriously f#cked up country could a lady this stupid even get to take out the garbage for a vice presidential candidate of a major party..

  118. Leftside Annie says:

Awwww, now, y’all, quit picking on Fascist Barbie!

  119. AMcG773 says:

    She’s so ignorant it’s painful.

  120. Tweedster says:

Simply put, the ESSENCE of the 1st Amendment is too proivde the FREEDOM TO EXPRESS WHATEVER VIEWPOINT YOU MAY HAVE and the FREEDOM TO HEAR EVERY REJOINDER MADE BY THE OTHER SHAREHOLDERS OF THIS ESSENTIAL FREEDOM.

Palin is so incredibly stupid that she cannot even fathom the irony of her remarks. You are free to say what you believe Sarah, and the popular rejection of your beliefs is not an assault of what YOU believe, it is the reaction of other’s that is equally protected under the same freedom you enjoy when posing stupid questions.

    MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!

    We need a landslide people…

sorry bout them caps also again you betcha!!!

  121. Tweedster says:

Wait, the people’s rejection of Palin IS an assault on her asinine beliefs, but NOT by any stretch, an assault on her 1st Amendment Rights…

  122. weeza says:

Palin – we are still waiting for your medical records !!!

  123. ElBruce says:

“Help, help, I’m being repressed! Come see the violence inherent in the system!”
