At a rally in York, Pennsylvania yesterday, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin continued to declare that she and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) would “balance the federal budget by the end of our first term.” “Now a promise like that, you can trust that John McCain and I will keep our promises,” added Palin.
But McCain’s top economic adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, doesn’t believe Palin and McCain will be able to keep her balanced budget promise. In an interview with Neil Cavuto on Thursday, Holtz-Eakin admitted that McCain was “not going to be able to do it”:
CAVUTO: You’re not going to be able to do it.
HOLTZ-EAKIN: I couldn’t agree with you more.
CAVUTO: All right. Then how do you do it?
HOLTZ-EAKIN: Let me finish. I did you know we put out a plan and this is how we’ll do it. Then the world exploded. No doubt about it. We’re now looking at a trillion dollars for the federal deficit.
Watch it:
Holtz-Eakin’s acknowledgment of the budget reality shouldn’t be news to Palin. Earlier this month, he said that the financial crisis had “completely thrown a wrench” into their plans and that any attempt to balance the budget is “going to be harder, take longer.”
I think that Bush made the same “promise”.

November 1st, 2008 at 2:39 pmDoes it really matter at all what this soon-to-be-irrelevant airhead has to say?
After all, we are talking about a bimbo who is found to have violated Alaska’s ethics standards . . . but did nothing illegal or unethical.
We are talking about an empty-headed moron who said “thanks but no thanks” to Washington for a Bridge to Nowhere that she supported when running for governor . . . but kept the money anyway and built a road that ends where the non-existent bridge was supposed to be built.
Really. We have too many important things on our plate to pay any more attention to the Pentacostal Pork-barrel Princess of Wasilla. On Wednesday, she will pack up her clothes, send them back to the RNC and return home to Alaska where more lawsuits await her. Good-bye and good riddance to her.
November 1st, 2008 at 2:39 pmWe are talking about a woman who not only doesn’t understand what the role of VP entail -and cannot be bothered to research it, but obviously cannot handle basic math -such as addition and subtraction- either.
She probably thinks Holtz-Eakin is an elitist for using big words such as “trillion” and “deficit”.
November 1st, 2008 at 2:46 pmAs John McCain would say, “Blah, blah, blah, blah….”

Not a bad strategy if you want to break the hold of large corporations on our 2 party system .If Barrack is safe in your state a vote for a 3rd party candidate who might reach the 5% threshold would certainly change the political landscape here.
I would agree if this was any other election. But, considering the fact that the Republicans are trying desperately to poison the well with Obama, I think that even in safe states we need everyone to vote for Obama. He will need an overwhelming mandate to be able to govern without constant interference by the Republicans.
November 1st, 2008 at 2:51 pmoops… I posted to the wrong thread. Sorry.
November 1st, 2008 at 2:52 pmAnyone could balance the budget by nationalization of Exxon-Mobil and other oil companies. Do what they advocate in Alaska on National level. Record profits for everyone!
That and quit funding poor work by private contractors in Iraq (and elsewhere).
November 1st, 2008 at 2:53 pmBob, what a week it was for big oil! Their new theme should be “Party like it’s 3rd quarter 2009!” Never mind the glum American citizen, who watched their IRA or 401(k) drop 30-40% during the same period. How much did the big boys make?
ExxonMobil $14.83 billion
BP $10 billion
Chevron $7.89 billion
Shell $10.9 billion
ConocoPhillips $5.18 billion
Just from the top five, big oil earned a $48,8 billion profit. One quarter’s profits alone could have saved Bear Stearns with nearly $20 billion to spare. It also could fund hospital uncompensated care, amounting to $31 billion in 2006.
But John McCain wants to give the oily boys a tax cut! More Republican sponsored Corporafornication.
Gas prices dove the month before the election and Wall Street posted its biggest one week gain, ever! There trying to put a balm over the troubled waters to get their boy in office.
McCain wants to pull a Harry. That’s a Truman-like surprise win…
November 1st, 2008 at 2:59 pmReally? In 2000?

Oh yeah… here we go!

Botch, sadly enough, was misquoted on that one. What he actually made was a comment about UNBALANCING the budget, along w/ the country, and well, most of the civilized world.
November 1st, 2008 at 3:15 pmPalin knows she can make these promises because she knows her ticket is gonna lose next Tuesday, so expect her and Johnny to be saying things like this!
November 1st, 2008 at 3:19 pmYou people do the young lady an injustice. You must look to her background to understand her jargon (look it up, Please!) you must understand her drives and ambitions in her formative years. Her goal was to become a beauty queen. To accomplish same she had to practice her poise and aplomb by using a book perched precariously on her head as she pranced around with her mammary glands protruding while she exhibited the proverbial sheet-eating grin. Now, with this background in mind it is easy to see that her concept of “balancing the budget” entails the difficult task of donning her blue dress, placing the budget on her head, and prancing into the oval seductively saying “Hi! I’m Monica.”
November 1st, 2008 at 3:27 pmNotice how in the past week or so, every event that Gov. Flailin has been at, there are no “McCain/Palin” signs, just “Coutry First or “Palin”. Guess we know that she is running for 2012, not 2008.
Gotta hurt when your own VP candidate thinks you are a loser.

I suspect that it is because after the TV cameras are turned off the chrome plated fireman’s pole comes down and the $150,000 wardrobe bites the runway dust.
November 1st, 2008 at 3:33 pmAnd if the Palin rally they were just showing on MSNBC was live, then she repeated this balanced-budget-in-our-first-term lie again, not five minutes ago. And it is a lie, because it cannot be done and maintain the wars they both want to have going. Either they know this is a lie, which calls into question their integrity, or they don’t understand it’s a lie, which calls into question their intelligence.
So, if you support McCain and Palin, then you support government with neither integrity nor intelligence.

November 1st, 2008 at 4:03 pmIn fairness. I am not sure there are anymore. I think they may be just trying to save face. I have met no one in the last 2 to 3 weeks that defends her. I’ll bet not even Rapture will come to her rescue here today. Who knows maybe Tracy_# will have some thoughts on Ms. Palin. How ’bout you Alcyone?
Let’s check out Scary Sarah’s track record of “balancing the budget.” When she was Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, she ran up a record City budget deficit, and when she left, Wasilla had many millions of dollars of debt, some $22,000,000 or $30,000,000, I am not sure of the exact amount. (For a city of only 10,000 residents, too). A visit to mudflats.wordpress.com or a google search should provide the exact number. The words of Scary Sarah are not to be trusted…
November 1st, 2008 at 4:04 pmTRoS,
I did say both. I said “So, if you support McCain and Palin, then you support government with neither integrity nor intelligence.” That means that they do not have integrity and they do not have intelligence. Or, to put it another way, they have neither integrity nor intelligence.
And, as much as I didn’t intend it this way, it could also be interpreted as saying that if you support McCain/Palin, then you are doing so with neither integrity nor intelligence.
November 1st, 2008 at 4:06 pmIt’s called out right lying for votes. Sarah knows what she’s doing and using as many people as possible that will believe her lies. Look Sarah was trained by Uncle Ted Stevens a now convicted felon who says it was his twin brother Chuck in the court room. Now notice how Uncle Ted has the art of lying in your face, that’s what he taught Sarah to do. She knows it’s over and will milk this for all it’s worth. The RNC better check on the 5 million dollar fund raiser Sarah is doing as it’s First Dude Todd collecting the cash and will pocket as much as possible. It’s the old switch and bait, Todd collects 6 million in cash but gives the RNC 250,000. Yes Sarah and Todd learned the lesson of Uncle Ted very well.
November 1st, 2008 at 5:46 pmShe can do it. She just has to take some of that money Alaska gets from owning socialistically, I mean uniquely collectively, and use it to pay off the debt. But would that be spreading the wealth around? http://straighttalkonmccain.blogspot.com/

November 1st, 2008 at 11:14 pmA little Palin humor.

In the final debate, Bob Schieffer asked McCain this very question. This went completely unnoticed by the media afterwards. When asked if he could balance the budget by the end of his first term, McCain replied very quietly almost in passing: “Sure” and then pivoted very quickly and SURPRISE, SURPRISE, started attacking Senator Obama. Schieffer failed to follow up to nail him down on this answer. That “biased liberal media” was at it again!
