Ted Stevens may lose his law license.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that the “Alaska Bar Association went to the state Supreme Court on Thursday seeking to suspend Sen. Ted Stevens’ law license on an interim basis, pending completion of his appeals. … Any final decision on Stevens’ license would wait until his appeals have been finished.” Unlike voting rights, which say that a felony conviction is effective only upon sentencing, bar association rules say that a conviction is set as soon as a jury rules.

Update "Democratic Sen. Daniel Inouye provided a campaign boost Saturday to embattled Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, predicting that his colleague from Alaska will win re-election and overturn his conviction on appeal."
Update Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid rebuffed Inouye's comments. “While I respect the opinion of Senator Daniel Inouye, the reality is that a convicted felon is not going to be able to serve in the United States Senate. And as precedent shows us, Senator Stevens will face an ethics committee investigation and expulsion, regardless of his appeals process,” Reid said.

According to Stevens, is he still able to cast a vote for himself this election? He says he’s NOT a convicted Felon until ALL appeals are exhausted… Is he correct?

I’m starting to lose faith in the intellectual legitimacy of my profession… is Inhofohoe a lawyer too? This guys said some of the stupidest things around..in law school, didn’t someone ever tell him that the american justice system is made up of a “series of laws”, ones which cause you to end up behind a “series of bars” if you break?

Sure, lawyers in general have a reputation somewhere slightly above prostitutes and PCP dealers, but to anyone who thinks thier bad things….just ask yourself, why does the bush administration constantly rail against them?..they must be doing something right..

Ya know, this entire trial, its appeals, losing his license and the overall strain, could take years of the 84-year old Stevens’ life.

I pushed the wrong button! Belay my last.

The jury ruled. Stevens was found guilty and his law license is set aside immediately.

  14. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Yes, Crusty, he must give up his law license. But he can still vote unless he waives his appeals and agrees to be sentenced. But if he did that, he wouldn’t get his chance to vote against that ungrateful Sarah Palin for not standing by him even after he was found guilty of the kind of thing she got elected Governor to fight.

  15. Jackie says:

Looks like Uncle Ted is confusing the voters. Now it takes the biggest Alaskan News paper to explain it to the voters. Uncle Ted can’t vote because he’s a conviced felon and it wasn’t his twin brother Chuck. Secondly his license is only suspended and will be removed once his apppeal is finished. It was a good try by Uncle Ted but it seems the people of Alaska don’t wont criminals to represent their State. Looks like Sarah Boop is not to get the boot out of office.

O.T. – but this is truly a terrible story. This is the kind of stuff that makes me ashamed of my own country the last 7+ years.

Willett is also angry the defence department will not agree to let him meet his clients unless they are chained to the floor. He called for this restriction to be lifted: “Just permit these men one shred of human dignity.” He added: “Americans are not supposed to treat enemy prisoners of war this way under the service field manuals, or the Geneva conventions – if anyone paid attention to the field manuals or the Geneva conventions anymore.”

But according to Ted he hasn’t been convicted of anything, so whats all this removed his license stuff about?

Just think…80 more hours and this cretin will have been defeated and in early January he’ll be off to prison. I’m hoping for Leavenworth

Seems if I am found “guilty” of having an ounce, I get sentence – go to jail THEN “appeal” . . or is there a DIFFERENT legal system for politicians?

Of course that b!tch heard it… any one with substance or at least a hint of integrity would have called this out.
I have absolutely no respect left for those in my neighborhood with a McCain/Paline sign or the members in my family that support this ho and lying old man.

Obama being the well mannered gentleman he is would never allow obscenities such as this.

  35. Bad Eye says:

    Speaking of rallies…

McCain is planning an appearance at our local airport on Monday. This is in Tennessee, where he is leading Obama by double digits. Yeah, he really needs to drum up support here. Oh, and this apparently very last minute announcement caught the TN state Republican party totally off guard and one prominent local Repub state senator (Ron Ramsey, Lt. Gov and Speaker of the state senate) isn’t changing his plans to be out of town.

Seems to me that McCain needs to be in Virginia, about a 10 minute drive up the interstate, where he needs the most support. After all, Obama made not one, but two visits to that part of the state.

But the Repubs weren’t totally absent from the area; a few weeks ago Haley Barbour led a Repub bus tour through VA and held a “rally” in the cafeteria of a local middle school. They had a whopping 300 people show up.

Good! Thats not all he should lose!!

  40. barfly says:

Don’t know if this has already been posted, but here’s a piece from McClatchy:

Alaska’s Permanent Fund has lost $10 billion in last year

Alaska Permanent Fund investments had a negative 8.5 percent return during the July-September quarter thanks to sagging stock markets, said officials of the state oil-wealth savings account.

The fund value fell to $33 billion on Sept. 30, the end of the quarter. But stock markets plunged in October, and the fund’s value now is about $30 billion. The value peaked at $40.4 billion a year ago.

Despite the pounding from the stock market, the fund should make a profit for the fiscal year that ends next June, said Michael Burns, chief executive of the Alaska Permanent Fund Corp. That should prop up next fall’s annual Permanent Fund dividend paid to Alaskans. The dividend is based on profits averaged over five years. The fund’s profits this fiscal year would need to hit about $1.5 billion to result in a dividend about the size of this year’s $2,069.

“With our cash stream from real estate rent and other sources, we expect to end the fiscal year with a positive balance for statutory net income,” Burns said. But he noted that one-fourth into that fiscal year the fund was showing a $137 million loss, not a profit.

  41. Iolair says:

Aw man! and he’s gonna need that law license while in prison!

  42. wizard2000 says:

Ted Stevens better watch out or he’ll give lawyers a bad name.

Oh, and a follow-up on one of his fellow Alaskans:

Why do I get the feeling that Sarah “Barracuda” Palin is not releasing her medical records because to do so would reveal that she had an abortion years ago?

I figure that the optimum period for Sarah “Barracuda” Palin to possibly have gotten an abortion would have been during that period when she was competing in Alaskan beauty pageants, and “The Barracuda” wouldn’t have allowed anything to get in the way of her quest for the crown…like an unwanted pregnancy.

If she has nothing to hide from the American voting public concerning her past medical history, then Sarah “Barracuda” Palin shouldn’t hesitate to release her complete medical records, but if there are any gaps, like during her beauty pageant contestant years, then by inference we’ll know that the McCain/Palin campaign is trying to hide something she did while a young maverick from their ardent religious fundamentalist anti-abortion base today, something that could prove very detrimental to their chances of winning on Tuesday.

Oh, and any abortion that Sarah “Barracuda” Palin got back then would have been purely a “vanity” abortion, meaning that her life wasn’t in any danger from possible pregnancy complications, a “vanity” abortion” she wanted because being pregnant would have made her look fat and probably ruined her beauty pageant aspirations.

I’m truly surprised at Inouye’s comment. Has he not been following this case? My respect for him has taken a big hit.

As for Fester’s contention that he’s

the prick who helped cover up Iran/Contra by not allowing certain quetions to be asaked during the Iran/Contra hearings.

I may well be wrong I don’t remember it that way. I do remember Inouye ripping Ollie North for claiming that Congress leaked national security info. He made North admit that both he and the White House leaked that info.

And who could forget Sen. Inouye’s defining moment when he declares the existence of a “shadow government“?
