Eagleburger Tries To Make Up For His Criticisms Of Palin By Hurling Insults At Obama

Asked whether Sarah Palin is ready to assume the reins in a time of national crisis, former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger — a McCain supporter — candidly told NPR on Thursday “of course not.” “I devoutly hope that [she] would never be tested,” he added.

The next day, after realizing the damage he had done to the McCain campaign, Eagleburger tried to step back from his comments. Appearing on Fox News, he explained, “I made a serious mistake yesterday,” he said. “I wasn’t thinking when I said it. … I was just plain stupid, and if I have given the flim flam artist Barack Obama some success with this, I am deeply apologetic. I did not intend it.”

Appearing again on Fox News this morning, Eagleburger tried desperately to make up for the problems he has caused for the McCain campaign by lobbing hyperbolic accusations at Obama:

“He came up out of the Chicago mob.” [...]

“If he wins, there’s even a little bit of an indication of Senator McCarthy in the sense that, the media he doesn’t like or that have not endorsed him, he kicks off the plane.”

Watch it:

The New York Times reports this morning that Fox News has tried hard to bury Eagleburger’s criticisms of Palin:

After NPR reported late last week that a McCain supporter, former Secretary of State Lawrence S. Eagleburger, questioned whether Ms. Palin was “prepared to take the reins of the presidency,” MSNBC repeated it roughly 20 times over the course of the day, CNN mentioned it four times, a review of programming on the monitoring service ShadowTV found. And Fox News Channel did one segment, in which it interviewed Mr. Eagleburger, who apologized and said Ms. Palin was “a quick study.”

True to form, the “fair and balanced” Fox and Friends did not make reference to Eagleburger’s previous comments about Palin, nor did they ask a single question about her.

This election is doing something I thought impossible.

It is making me religious. ‘Cause once this is over, if Obama wins, I will be THANKING GOD that Faux Snooze is no longer the Official Proganda Arm of the Federal Govt and more specifically the WH.

Now, if we could only strip Murdoch of his citizenship and toss his smarmy arse outta the country… my conversion would be absolute and complete.

Funny, I don’t recall Larry Eagleburger decrying the McCarthyism of John McCain kicking Joe Klein and MoDo off the Pander Express, nor expressing alarm when McCain abruptly cancelled an appearance on Larry King in response to what his campaign considered “lack of deference” to the Disasta from Alaska.

    IOKIYAR, I guess.

Fox and Friends don’t have time for such things. They are busy with their non-stop coverage of breaking rumors about ACORN stealing the election.

  9. Fred says:

Eagleburger has helped screw things up before, just like bush, he’s usually on the wrong side:

His period as advisor for Yugoslavian affairs from 1989 to 1992 was highly controversial. He gained a reputation for being a strong Serbian partisan, most controversially denying that Serbian paramilitaries and the Yugoslav National Army had committed atrocities in the breakway republic of Croatia. This perceived partisanship led the European press to dub him Lawrence of Serbia (a reference to Lawrence of Arabia).

Palin Prank Call: Canadian Comedy Duo Convinces Palin She’s Talking To Sarkozy (AUDIO)

The AP reports that a Quebec comedy duo, posing as French President Nicolas Sarkozy, have successfully prank called Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin has unwittingly taken a prank call from a Canadian comedian posing as French President Nicolas Sarkozy and told him she may make a good president in eight years.
The Republican vice presidential nominee discussed politics, the perils of hunting with Vice President Dick Cheney, and Sarkozy’s “beautiful wife,” in the telephone call released Saturday.

When the caller told Palin she would make a good president, she laughed and replied: “Maybe in eight years.”

No sh*t, on Channel #3. She made them tell her first. Then when she did give candy out it had a M/P flier attached. My comment then was “YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING.” But they’re not. These people are whacko without the straight-jacket.

Or as they call it, Saturday night.

I once went to a bar in the Castro with some lesbian friends, and when we walked in, I thought there was going to be a brawl.

I’m standing there, the lone hetero in the room (judging by the stares), wondering, “what the hell did I get myself into?”

  15. Max-1 says:

    Eagleburger said:

“If he wins, there’s even a little bit of an indication of Senator McCarthy in the sense that, the media he doesn’t like or that have not endorsed him, he kicks off the plane.”

But not like Michell Bachman’s calls for investigation into Congressional members’ loyalty to America, NO? No red scare there, NO?

  16. gloria says:

I have nothing but contempt for Eagleburger now. He had NO basis whatever to tie Obama to “the Chicago Mob” and I do believe that sort of mendacity rises to the malice needed to prevail in a slander suit where the victim is a public figure.

  23. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Gawd, talk about making a fool out of yourself. This one takes the cake. Obama has never been near the Chicago mob and he is not the first presidential candidate to kick someone off his plane. That is even an exaggeration. He had so many people who want to be on his plane, he was doing some rotation to give new people a seat on the plane. There is no god-given right that those particular newspapers were to have a seat on Obama’s plane forever.

Knowing that they are going to lose, you would think that the Republicans would rather go out with some dignity left. But, sadly, they are going kicking and screaming and making fools of themselves.

I bet there is no mention of this story on the “fair and balanced” Faux Noise! If you haven’t listened to this yet, you have to. It is hilarious. I would have known within a minute it was a prank call by the fake accents. Palin is so star struck and full of herself she doesn’t put her brain in gear when she thinks she is being treated like a star.

    I don’t understand reichwingers.

Not long ago, Coulter (that conservative icon) was spouting that McCarthy was an example of an outstanding citizen and patriot, who has been demonised by the liberal media, and the left-wing radicals.

But now being a McCarthyite is akin to being a bad, bad person.

Didn’t McCain kick Dowd off his plane?

Eagleburger is one hypocritical old fool.

It would not surprise me one bit if, afer it’s clear that Obama has won, Fox News Channel starts raising the specter of a fraudulent election, one filled with fake voters, as “evidenced” by the illegal registrations ACORN, and ACORN alone, collected. (Never mind the guys who have already been arrested for filing fake republican registrations.) It won’t be a direct accusation, just one of those things they slip in at the end of conversations, like, “Assuming there hasn’t been massive voter fraud in this election because, frankly, we just don’t know.” In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if they keep bringing it up as a hypothetical question, and then they’ll start openly questioning the legitimacy of Obama’s election with the basis being, “So many people are asking questions.” Of course, it’s them and the people they encourage to bring it up, who will be doing the asking. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

So is ya betcha a new gooper phrase?

These people can find nothing to legitimately criticize Obama on and look like old fools dragging out ACORN, Obama’s fund raising and fabricated images of Obama appearing to b e a terrorist.

ACORN has been explained and cleared, Obama’s fund raising came from the masses We the People and the terrorist image is a racist tactic.
