Perino explains Bush’s low ratings: ‘Everybody would like to be popular in high school, some of us just weren’t.’

In today’s White House press briefing, spokesperson Dana Perino struggled to name the President’s major accomplishments in light of tomorrow’s election. “We have learned from mistakes. … So a lot of things have improved,” she said. Perino complained about Bush’s abysmal approval ratings, claiming they are like a high school popularity contest:

And this President was tested by a lot of different issues and I think he’s taken those issues head on, and we can be proud of how we’ve addressed them. Everybody would like to be popular. You can all remember that back in high school, everyone really wanted to be popular. Some of us just weren’t. But that doesn’t mean that you don’t have principles and values that you stay true to. And that’s what this President has done, and it’s what he’s taught a lot of us, including me.

OMG — PLEASE don’t tell me this bubblehead is comparing the job approval ratings of the person holding the highest office in the land to adolescent popularity.

Does she even have a clue???

  2. konchster says:

I think that sums up the Bush legacy He thought it was a popularity contest and it turns out there where real consequences to his actions or lack thereof

    Absolutely unbelievable.

Wonder who Obama will chose for his press secretary… I must look forward to the future to get through these last few weeks.

Was Dana a fatty with glasses in high school? Why are you living out your and your boss’ high school angst on the national stage? Such children running this country, stupid, small minded Piggy from Lord of the Flies children

once again, totally surreal. You had better hope god blesses your bubble, Dana. Cause if it were to pop… it would be a scene along the lines of the movie scanners. Heads would be exploding left and right.

    Well actually, just right.

  8. burro says:

Bushbot extraordinaire. Is it because she is so pretty that the lies and absurd rationalizations that she utters seem so extra offensive? It’s obvious that she’s the whipped cream on the fecal matter and foul smells emanating from Shrubworld.

I think she’s actually pretty smart. Smart enough to know better. But she’s made her partisan choice and for whatever reason the ‘bots come up with to justify their endless catapulting of the propaganda, she can’t acknowledge reality.

Saddam had his Baghdad Bob who could look at incoming missiles and see clear skies. At least that’s what he tried to tell the world. Invasion? What invasion?? Well, Perino is Bushbot Bob who saw white and said “Black” time after time and history will see her as the parroting mouthpiece that she has been.

  9. nochickenhawk says:

I’ve got it. I can name one of the village idiot’s (aka Bush, jr.)major accomplishments. He named an airhead press secretary that thinks the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis are one and the same thing. All good presidents surround themselves with top flight people!

sure…. but “a lot of us” didn’t have a butler to bring us a sandwich after the quarterback beat the shit out of the cheerleader guy, give him an atomic wedgie, and then steal his lunch money.

How sophomoric! Dana just called the American electorate immature.

Sorry Ms. Perino, adult George W. earned every bit of the national dissatisfaction with his policies, not with his personality.

Absolutely! I can’t agree with you more. I’ve been looking forward to the day where my life didn’t remind of a cheap rehash of my high school years. It amazes me daily… no matter what I invest my interest and efforts into it’s goddamn high school over and over again.

the whole thing seems so surreal.

  21. Keith says:

Yeah, right. Because the type of guy who is a cheerleader, head of fraternity, and party animal is just not the type to win a popularity contest. The Al Gore and John Kerry types are the ones who win the popularity contests—you know, the stiff, know-it-all types. [major snark]

  22. pete says:

Nothing to do with the worst economic crisis in, at least, 80 years or his disastrous foreign policy, hey Dana?

Actually, her inane statement is quite revealing about the Reichwhiner’s mindset. They have cause and effect backwards. They just like/dislike people for their affiliations or no reason at all.

They have themselves convinced that we would “hate Bush” if he had not been a disaster. They really don’t understand that it’s the catastrophic results of Chimpy’s administration that feeds our loathing.

  23. Keith says:

Says the blond bim with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications.

I think with this statement we see Perino mentally capping her career as a White House spokesperson and moving on, emotionally. She was probably of the popular clique, and makes note in this, that there were many who tried to attain that level, but didn’t measure up in one way or another.

A less kind reading, is that she’s calling him a poser/NOKD, who she now pities for his uncool, L7-ness.

  25. Keith says:

She can always be a political pundit on FOX.

Alright.. I know everybody on TP knows that this country is in far more danger that it was pre-Bush. Still, how does she say with a straight face, that Bush did ” a good job of keeping this country safe” when we’ve had the deadliest attack on U.S. soil, in our history, on his watch. How does she rationalize the deadliness and destruction of Hurricane Katrina? How does she even begin to explain the resurgence of Al Quaeda in Afghanistan? Off to go vote now. I’m so grateful that this 8 year nightmare is almost over.

    Hope.

    Shenanigans

Wisconsin–According to AP, some GOP GOTV workers were told to introduce themselves to voters as “volunteers”, even though they were actually paid temps from an agency.
Now they say they are being stiffed on some of their hours.

They were hired by The Lincoln Group who are contracted by the RNC.

The Lincoln Group are the guys who invented the “babies tossed out of incubators” story of the 1991 Gulf War, and who provided Kuwaitis to pose as American flag-waving Iraqis to greet the US troops in Baghdad.

  69. NoOneYouKnow says:

The truly tragic thing is that this is the quality of insight that Bushco has relied on for eight years.

I know No Child Left Behind only mandates the teaching of English Comprehension and Math and everything else seems to be an elective but Perino obviously doesn’t make the grade in even those two subjects.

This sounds more like her issue with not giving up her virginity in high school to be more “popular”. Well, good for her. I can see wanting to make that comparison for a woman. Don’t give credit to Sully for donning a Capt. Obvious cape. Andrew Sullivan was one of the loudest beating the Iraq War drums. He has a memory like an NFL cornerback in that he has an innate ability to forget all of his worst plays. We have no such excuse.

Sully is a weather vane. And his “epiphany” was a business decision. He was transformed from an unappreciated gay neo-con/Bush-loving conservative outsider to a high profile “repentant” conservative warmly embraced by “liberals.”

As his shift “validated” their positions, many liberals were all too willing to accept him. Suddenly, Sullivan was more relevant than ever. The Time mag gig followed shortly thereafter. More money and more attention for him.

Trust me. Next time the GOP fronts a candidate younger, prettier and slightly more sane than McCain, Andy will have a man-crush all over again.

Re: Colbert: Typical Sullivan. His calculated pre-scripted cheesey applause lines make me cringe every time.
