McCain slips, almost credits ‘Joe the Bomber’ for rise in polls.

During an interview with a local Norfolk, VA ABC affiliate last week, John McCain was asked why he was not beating Barack Obama in the state, considering Virginia has voted for a Republican president in every election since 1964. McCain replied that he is doing better in more recent polling and nearly cited “Joe the Bomber” as the reason. He quickly corrected himself, saying “[U]h — Joe the Plumber”:

Q: [W]ith Virginia a reliably red state dating all the way back to 1964, how come you’re not doing better in the polls in Virginia?

MCCAIN: We’re doing much better actually, there’s a poll out today that shows we’re within about three so we’re moving up and moving up fast. And look, Joe the Bomb — uh — Joe the Plumber turned the whole thing around.

    ‘Twas the night before elections
    And all through the town
    Tempers were flaring
    Emotions all up and down!

    I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
    Had cut off the TV
    Tired of political crap.

    When all of a sudden
    There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
    Saw McCain and his boys

They had come for my wallet
    They wanted my pay
    To give to the CEO’s
Who had not worked a day!

    He snatched up my money
    And quick as a wink
    Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink

    He then rallied his henchmen
    Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
    To tear my country apart!

    ” On Fannie, on Freddie,
    On Cheney and Palin!
    On Exxon and Enron”
    He screamed at his failin’.

They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the Nation
Who wouldn’t stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think
    On this one final note-
IF YOU DONT WANT MORE BUSH
    GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!

  5. margerine says:

I guess you have to be optimistic. Nevermind that they’re still trailing there.

I’m still scared to death that something is going to happen and Obama won’t win.

  6. Nevar says:

“And look, Joe the Bomb — uh…”
So, would that be why Joe fiddles around cutting and threading pieces of pipe?

Oh, so THAT’s the October Surprise!

A few days late, but what are ya gonna do?

  8. misshusseinmolly says:

Well, Joe’s probably about as much a bomber as he is a plumber…

A few threads back, I marveled at the McCain using someone who’s an obvious moron as their spokesperson, and wondered if the moron demographic was large enough to turn the tide for them.

Apparently, it’s large enough to change the polls a few points. I guess a LOT of children are being left behind. They cannot see that Obama’s restoring the upper tax bracket to what it was during the Clinton administration is not socialism. They cannot see that Joe the Plumber’s chances of buying a multi-million dollar business (the kind of business you need if you want to make profits of a quarter mil or greater) are virtually none. They cannot see that Joe the Plumber’s understanding of foreign policy, the economy, and other issues runs on a par with his grasp of basic math.

Yup — McCain has the idiot vote pretty much sewn up, thanks to this guy.

  10. CageyCretin says:

Hmmmm…. any validity to this slip? Ol’ Joe (Sam) certainly has the makings of a tool — the kind who would do anything (emphasize anything) for his party. What do we rally know about this ‘plumber’ who, after getting to ask a question of Obama, is suddenly on the campaign trail (paid?…) and doing constant interviews and attending rallies. I cannot conceive that ol’ Joe is doing all this on his own dime. Yes, this is the bizzarro-world of political campaigning, but this is also the GOP. Makes one wonder…

  11. Fred says:

If joe the plumbers helper does swing the vote then the idiocracy is in the majority…..just sayin.

  12. misshusseinmolly says:

The poll McCain is grasping at — the one that shows him to be “within about three” is the Mason-Dixon poll, which traditionally skews toward McCain far more than the others.

The latest Reuters/Zogby still has Obama leading by six points in VA, the most recent CNN/Time poll has Obama leading by nine, and Fox News/Rasmussen has Obama up by four.

But he appears to be optimistic. In a kind of Ed Wood way.

  13. unbelievable says:

    Rise in polls?

Does he not undersand that whether he loses by 14 points or 4 points, he still loses?

  14. katy says:

ew… man… what’s that say about YOU, the candidate, when a fake plumber “turned the whole thing around”?

  15. BlueProteus says:

This is really getting ridiculous. A guy who is not named Joe, and is not a plumber, yet is known as Joe the Plumber. He’s being paraded around now as some sort of representative American.

On the occasions he’s opened his mouth to the press, has shown a stunning lack of knowledge. And now he’s got himself his own agent.

And this is the Republican’s “trump card”?

Could all of this possibly become any more embarrassing?

  16. Nevar says:

misshusseinmolly Says: Yup — McCain has the idiot vote pretty much sewn up, thanks to this guy.

We are seeing the direct result of the dumbing down of an entire generation through television, mass media, and a consumption driven society.
Meet Joe the Plumber, who isn’t reallly, just like television.
As evidenced by Lindsay Graham’s joke last week about McCain having hit the motherload. (paraphrased) “John got lucky by marrying a good looking rich woman who owns a beer company.”
Ahh, the American dream. Brought to you by Budweiser.
    Don’t touch that dial!

    _______

You’d be surprised. As John Oliver explained a few weeks back on The Daily Show, we should never underestimate the importance of The Stupid Vote.

  18. CageyCretin says:

    katy Says:
ew… man… what’s that say about YOU, the candidate, when a fake plumber “turned the whole thing around”?

Yep. However, in the republican mind that is really not relevant: the ONLY thing important to the republican mindset is “our side winning”. Party first, and nothing else matters.

Senate Seats: 58 Democrats 42 Republicans

Obama wins Virginia, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Iowa and Florida; McCain wins Ohio and Missouri…. Coleman wins in Minnesota; Chambliss loses Georgia; Landrieu loses in Louisiana.

This is how they monitor their base. The GOP needs to keep track on the level of ignorance and/or cognitive dissonance of their core low information voters. To do this, they endlessly repeat soemthing which is widely known to be false. As long as the gullible knuckleheads in campaign rallys continue to cheer upon hearing the selected factoid, they can be confident that their army of mindless drones are still under their control.
