Barack Obama and his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng have released this statement:
It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.
Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer.
We offer our deepest condolences to Barack Obama and his family as they grieve the loss of their beloved grandmother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them as they remember and celebrate the life of someone who had such a profound impact in their lives.
Sad to hear. It’s too bad she won’t be around to see him win tomorrow.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:44 pmI wonder if all the right-wing wonks who were saying that Obama visiting his grandmother was just a ’stunt’ will apologize?
*crickets chirping*
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:44 pmRIP Mrs. Dunham. You can rest now, knowing that you did a fantastic job raising the next leader of the free world.
Sorry that she could not have held on long enough to see him elected. My thoughts are with the Obamas.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:46 pmWell I for one would like to thank Madelyn for having anything to do with shaping Obama into the kind of person who has inspired so many people already. My best friend is voting for the first time because she wants to vote for him.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:47 pmBlessings to her family. I am so happy that Obama took time off the campaign trail to visit her before her death. It is indeed unfortunate that she was unable to live long enough to celebrate her grandson’s election as the 44th President of the United States.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:47 pmEternal rest grant unto her, oh Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul, and all the other souls of the goodly departed, rest in peace, Amen.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:49 pmGod saw that you were tired, and a cure was not to be,
so He put His arms around you, and whispered,
Come to Me.
A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.
It saddens me that she didn’t live quite long enough to see her grandson elected President of the United States. My heart goes out to her family, and blessings for her soul.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:51 pmAbu Ben Hussein Leporello Says:
Beautiful!
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:52 pmMy condolences to her family.
Rest in Peace, Madelyn Dunham — you did good.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:52 pmI wonder if all the right-wing wonks who were saying that Obama visiting his grandmother was just a ’stunt’ will apologize?
Don’t hold your breath. Just last week, Limpballs was asking if anyone had heard about how his grandmother was doing, calling it a sympathy play on Obama’s part and intimating that he really went to Hawaii to “fix” his birth certificate.
Little Seanie hasn’t been much more civil about it.
I doubt that either of them have the common human decency to express any condolences. They are merely rotting, stinking corpses who have not yet recognized that their 15 minutes of fame are over.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:52 pmYes some wing nuts made comments about Senator Obama’s visit but at lease he took the time to see his grandmother before she left to go home. She will watch his success from heaven with his Mom, Dad and her husband. I guess she now knows how God works and at last He has really blessed America. Yes we sill have the Satan Worshippers among us but Evil really never wins in the end. I gift Senator Obama will carry for the rest of his life is the pictures in his mine and the stories he will tell his children of his life and trip to the White House. It’s a lesson to us all, God gives back to those who give from their heart. Now we see McCain, Bush, Cheney and others who fueled hate and crimes done to all Americans and even those around the World back is something else. The only question is how will God pay back such Evil?
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:52 pmMy Family and I have Mrs. Dunham’s Family in our prayers.
Bambi, why don’t leave before you’re kicked out.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:56 pmI believe in my heart of hearts that his grandmother knew he was going to be elected the 44th President of the United States. Thank you Toot for your wonderful contribution to this country.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:57 pmPositively heartbreaking. I had hoped that she would last long enough to see her grandson elected to the Presidency. My thoughts will be for the Obama family as I (God willing) cast my vote for his victory tomorrow. Barack Obama’s election to the Presidency will hopefully offer some solace to him and his family, and reinforce her legacy as one of the driving forces of his successful presidential bid.
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:57 pmCondolences to the family
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:57 pmhuge tears here… so sad she left before knowing…

November 3rd, 2008 at 4:58 pmoutcome is one word and why don’t we take it to a more appropriate thread?

I guess she knew the out come.
You are right you vile ignorant troll. She did know the outcome. She knew in her heart of hearts that her grandson, her pride in joy, is going to become the 44th President of the United States tomorrow.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:04 pmMay God bless Madelyn Dunham — a remarkable woman who “poured everything she had” into making Obama the man he is today. We all benefit from the life she lived.
Thank you, Mrs. Dunham — from the bottom of my heart.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:04 pmYour work is done, Mrs. Dunham. I wish you had a couple of extra days, but we’re ready to dedicate this election to your hard work of bringing up and inspiring a wonderful leader, the next 44th President of the United States.

November 3rd, 2008 at 5:05 pmThank you for your life and living Madelyn Dunham.

TP, could you spare us the psychopath behind the public library computer?
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:08 pmI believe those that love and leave before us, are still able to watch out for us just from a better vantage point. She knows how many people want to see Obama as our President, she has done well. Thank you for all of us, Mrs. Dunham.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:09 pmCondolences to the Senator and his family on the loss of his beloved grandmother, Madelyn Dunham. They are all in my thoughts and prayers. May memories of Mrs. Dunham bring them strength, peace, and a loving smile.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:09 pmMy heart aches for the Obama family. “Toot” did such an amazing job raising her grandson. One more day, and she could have seen him become our President.

November 3rd, 2008 at 5:12 pmPlease don’t even acknowledge the one that will do anything for attention. Perhaps they will find their own level in the sewer at rightwing sites.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:13 pmIt’s hard to know what to say except what an exceptional woman.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:18 pm“her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring”
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:19 pmAw, this is heartbreaking. What melancholy Barack must be feeling. My condolances.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:20 pmMy heart goes out to the Obama family. First, his Nevada state director dies of a heart attack, then he loses his grandmother all within the last two days. Sad day it is indeed.

November 3rd, 2008 at 5:32 pmWell, the first ones anyways.
Continue to flag him folks.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:33 pmAnyone who cannot refrain from making comments in poor taste regarding the death of any family member, regardless of political leaning, has no place in civilized society.
One day to go: Barack Obama will hold rallies in Florida, North Carolina, and then Virginia.
with a heavy heart…
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:35 pmFORE WARNING: NOT PRETTY
At least the McCain’s can be polite enough to have a kind word for the Obama’s. It appears their right wing kook followers need a lesson in civility.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:36 pmplease please please…
put the crap elsewhere… even the links…
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:39 pmMrs. Dunham must have been an extraordinary person, coming from a midwestern background yet providing an environment that encouraged this wonderful man to grow and hopefully lead America to be a better place for all nationalities and cultures.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:41 pmMy thoughts and prayers are with Obama and his family at this sad time.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go out into Freeperville right now. You really don’t want to know what they are saying. It is so vile I feel like I need a 20 minute shower.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:43 pmThe day before the election? That sucks that she didn’t get to see it.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:46 pmIt’s times like these that we see how mortal we all truly are ; I don’t believe I’ll ever forget that again.
Thank you , Madelyn Dunham ; I will never be able to repay you for the grandson you sent to help us rebuild this nation.
And for that , I am truly sorry ; rest in peace …………………………………..
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:47 pmOne of life’s tragedies — another couple of days and she could have seen her grandson make history. We all owe her a debt for raising a man as steadfast and true as Obama.
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:53 pmIf one’s spirit lives on, I am sure she is with Barack now.
I just wish she could have seen it.
crap
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:54 pmIf there is a heaven, perhaps his grandmother left so she could spend the glorious day of his election with her daughter, Baracks mother. They were both very precious women.
November 3rd, 2008 at 6:01 pmShe’s done her work, better and deeper than we can imagine. We have to do ours. Let’s go to the polls in her name. Be as uncompromising and dedicated in our actions as she was in hers. We carry it on from here and bring her vision to existence. God bless and keep you, Madelyn Dunham.
November 3rd, 2008 at 6:06 pmGodspeed Mrs. Dunham. Thank you for the legacy that you have unselfishly shared with us.
November 3rd, 2008 at 6:11 pmIt is with much sadness I must say to the entire Obama family I am sorry for your loss….We all were blessed knowing about this great lady…Blessings to you all…
November 3rd, 2008 at 6:33 pmGet bent, Daryll.
November 3rd, 2008 at 6:53 pmYou don’t belong here, Darryl. Have an ounce of respect and stay off this thread.
November 3rd, 2008 at 6:53 pmI think that’s the first classy thing I’ve seen McCain do during his entire campaign.
November 3rd, 2008 at 6:54 pmMy sincere condolences, Senator Obama.
From my Family to yours.
November 3rd, 2008 at 6:57 pmI am deeply saddened by this current turn of events. But we take solace in the fact she was a wonderful woman, a great grandmother, who raised a fine man. Who should become our next president.
November 3rd, 2008 at 7:00 pmBecause of my parent’s divorce when I was young, I was raised by my maternal grandparents, whom I love dearly. My grandmother is still alive. My grandfather passed away, ironically enough Nov. 4th 1995. I truly miss that wonderful man!
With anticipation of great joy, we are, once again, reminded of our limited time on this planet.
Barack, I pray for you and your family. Not for victory, but for comfort and understanding in this time of sorrow.
The world has lost an outstanding human being, but she made the world a better place.
And that, my friends, is what truly is important!
Anonymouse Says:

Yeah, McCain takes the high road while the rest of the RNC and Republicans take the low road. The California GOP filed a lawsuit against Obama today claiming that his using his election airplane to visit his Grandmother in Hawaii was an abuse of campaign finance laws. I guess they have forgotten about Palin’s $150,000 wardrobe which was a much bigger abuse.
November 3rd, 2008 at 7:03 pmAlejandro Says:

You’re late. She already saw it.
November 3rd, 2008 at 7:07 pmReal meaningful condolences, John and Cindy McJerk, was it only a couple of weeks ago that you were tagging Obama’s visit to his grandmother as just a campaign stunt?
My heart goes out to the Obama family, what a terrible loss and what a wonderful show she is sadly going to miss when McPalin go down in flames.

November 3rd, 2008 at 9:34 pmI’m sure Saint Peter had a few nice words for her at the gate.
My deepest condolences to Sen. Obama, Maya and his entire family. I know Toot was very dear to him. May she rest in eternal peace.
The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace. – Numbers 6:24-26
God bless you always.
November 3rd, 2008 at 9:42 pmAargh! One more day! All she needed was one more day! Well, it’s a good thing he went to visit her while he still could.
OK, let’s review the forthcoming wingnut talk-radio theories, as wingnuts are congenitally incapable of admitting they were ever wrong about anything, and many of them accused Obama of “pulling a stunt” when he visited her. It’s always best to be prepared.
1) Toot never existed. The woman pictured with him was a completely different person used just for those photos. As Obama was estranged from his parents early on, he was adopted as a child by an ACORN splinter cell under a program developed by Bill Ayers to train a cadre of youth to infiltrate the highest levels of government and institute a radical Marxist agenda. These “super-pols” were subjected to extreme conditioning to turn them into brilliant and inspiring speakers. This conditioning program was so extreme that many of the children in the program did not survive. Now that Obama’s backstory is no longer needed, they can now claim she’s dead in order to generate sympathy.
2) Barack poisoned her with Polonium-210 when he went to visit her last week.
3) Obama’s grandmother is alive and well and has been relocated to Indonesia under an assumed name.
4) All of the above.
Seriously, consider yourselves warned. These are the sort of things they’ll be saying tomorrow.
November 3rd, 2008 at 9:56 pmLay down my dear brothers, lay down and take your rest
November 3rd, 2008 at 10:23 pmOh won’t you lay your head upon your saviour’s breast
I love you, oh but Jesus love you the best
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Pretty dammed close ElBruce. Just go to the Freep Wingnut sites. You’ll see it there. Some of it, i just laugh at but others….you wonder how a soul could be so empty and full of hate.
November 3rd, 2008 at 10:25 pmMrs Dunham, Thank you !

THERE IS STILL TIME TO VOLUNTEER TOMORROW! EVERY BIT HELPS. CALL YOUR LOCAL OFFICE AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO, EVEN IF IT’S JUST FOR AN HOUR. DON’T STOP, DON’T LET UP, TODAY, TOMORROW AND IN THE FUTURE. FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHILDREN OF THE US AND THE WORLD, PLEASE TAKE THE TIME!
