UpdateFormer Republican senator Rick Santorum has had his right to vote challenged in Pennsylvania, "and
election officials will not count his absentee ballot (or that of his wife) until the matter is resolved, Allegheny County Elections Department director Mark Wolosik confirmed. Erin Vecchio, chairman of the Penn Hills School Board and chair of the Penn Hills Democratic Party, says she challenged the Santorums' right to vote in Pennsylvania this morning because they really live in Virginia."
UpdateRep. Chris Shays (R-CT) has been
defeated by Democratic challenger Jim Himes. Shays' defeat means there are no more Republican congressmen in New England.
UpdateScandal-plagued Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-FL) has
lost his seat to Republican challenger Tom Rooney.
Obama - 349
McCain- 189.

November 4th, 2008 at 7:11 pmMake sure you check out the election live-blogging at TheZoo!
November 4th, 2008 at 7:11 pmSeriously, Daryll? That's the extent of your wisdom at this point? A schoolyard taunt?
You used to have so much potential, Daryll.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:13 pmi wish i had a laptop - as it is, i may not be around TP much tonight... gonna start recording the results at 7 illinois...
November 4th, 2008 at 7:13 pmOdds:

CONGRATULATIONS, PRESIDENT OBAMA!
November 4th, 2008 at 7:13 pmOMFG CNN just beam in jessica yellin
November 4th, 2008 at 7:15 pmJust flag Daryll and ignore him. He's off in La La Land, as usual.

I apologize for the taunting, but I am excited because things seem as if tonight will go Sen. McCain’s way.
Because he won Kentucky? You're funny, Daryll. Of course he won Kentucky.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:25 pmVirginia Senate seat goes to Democratic nominee Mark Warner.

On brick at a time we will build the wall.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:26 pmDarryl: I apologize for the taunting, but I am excited because things seem as if tonight will go Sen. McCain’s way.
- - You betcha, McCain won that mircocosm of the U.S., Kentucky, so he must be headed for a blowout win.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:26 pmDarryl: I apologize for the taunting, but I am excited because things seem as if tonight will go Sen. McCain’s way.
- - Rove's legacy endures: The Republican Party will have transformed itself from the Party of Lincoln into the Party of the Old Confederacy. We will find that John McCain has achieved his best results in the Old Confederacy and only a sprinkling of thinly populated states of the Plains and Mountain West will be added. The core of the congressional G.O.P. will be drawn from the Old South.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:29 pmOh come on Zooey, Daryll is too amusing to ignore.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:32 pmSo Daryll have you given up on talking to god? I am thinking a McCain win is no more likely than a Huckabee win. If you get too bummed out as the night progresses, we can always talk Brazilian whore talk...
Just got back yesterday from a Las Vegas vacation, and they had Obama at 94% chance of winning...and those bookies don't kid around with their money.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:35 pmThe democracy now live coverage has gone down as apparently has the entire website for the last 10 minutes .
November 4th, 2008 at 7:43 pmOf course as soon as I post this it's back .
November 4th, 2008 at 7:44 pmI don't know, Buckie... you could have made some serious coin out there. Daryll says the night is headed McCain's way.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:45 pmBy the by, Daryll... we all understand how you had to bail on the "Barney Fag" thread earlier, seeing as how you used up all your non-arguments and all... no worries, though. Bitblt had your back, as usual on threads about Teh Gay.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:46 pmOn brick at a time we will build the wall.
Or the republican tomb...
I'm not feeling too confident about the veto-proof senate majority thing. That's the real shift of importance we need to restore the country.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:46 pmzooey - they just don't listen to us...
:-)
i'm off to the teevee room... have at it...
but we've serious business at hand.
hey, does it bother anyone else that they start giving out the "called for" results when the west still has 2 hours to go!???
why is that? will check back.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:51 pmSomething like 11 states close their polling in less than five minutes' time.
It feels just like the ride up the first roller-coaster ramp...
November 4th, 2008 at 7:56 pmYes katy, it really bothers me.
They start calling the states in the east, and people in the west get discouraged. I really hate that.
November 4th, 2008 at 7:57 pmObama - 77
McCain - 34
According to CNN
November 4th, 2008 at 8:01 pmIndiana's running very close.

No way I am sleeping this week.

November 4th, 2008 at 8:08 pmFlorida is beginning to look good for Obama too. He's holding a 8% lead at the last update.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:11 pmOne time for yourself.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:12 pmI will be interested to see if Failin' Palin wears an RNC-purchased outfit to the Unstable/Unable funeral in Arizona tonight or if she has put them all up for sale on eBay already.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:14 pmFlorida is beginning to look good for Obama too. He’s holding a 8% lead at the last update.

November 4th, 2008 at 8:17 pmNPR just called the NC Senate race for Kay Hagan! Yes!!!!!!!!!
November 4th, 2008 at 8:18 pmAlabama's crazy. They were posting 90% for Obama, two minutes ago.

November 4th, 2008 at 8:27 pmI thought Daryll would be hunkerd down in his bunker with his eternal supply of cheetos and mountain dew.

November 4th, 2008 at 8:27 pmNPR now projects Jean Shaheen in NH. Thats a pickup of 3 Senate seats so far. Looking good, very good.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:29 pmChambliss is doing well.
Rats.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:35 pmLiddy Dole loses in N. Carolina!
November 4th, 2008 at 8:35 pmI have to confess that I feel like a little school kid that just on Xmas eve. I don't know for sure what is going to happen in a few hours, but I am pretty damn sure it is going to be good.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:35 pmWell, at least at this point it looks like Gary Ruppert's prediction won't be coming true.
(Gary Ruppert is apparently a GOP troll over at Sadly, No! and he predicted an electoral result of McCain 538 - Obama 0)
November 4th, 2008 at 8:36 pmBruce Lunsford is giving Mitch McConnell a very hard time right now. This one might not be decided for a few days in Kentucky. If Lunsford wins it would be sweet.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:36 pmThree up, in the senate.
Is it enough to kick Leiberman to the curb?
November 4th, 2008 at 8:37 pmBritt Hume is looking MISERABLE as is the much of the FOX crew.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:38 pmI've been enjoying watching the Fox crew fumble and grumble thru tonight.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:40 pm(Gary Ruppert is apparently a GOP troll over at Sadly, No! and he predicted an electoral result of McCain 538 - Obama 0)
He used to stop here, way back when.
Remarkably like Daryll, in tone and content.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:40 pmVote counting has started in Ohio.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:41 pmWTF! They're calling SC for McCain with only 12% of the polls reporting.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:42 pmJust noticed that Florida is starting to tighten up. Obama is up by 3% points. Might a long night there.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:43 pmCNN called Pennsylvania for Obama and McWAAAAhhh is down almost two hundred thousand down in Florida.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:43 pmErin Vecchio, chairman of the Penn Hills School Board and chair of the Penn Hills Democratic Party, says she challenged the Santorums' right to vote in Pennsylvania this morning because they really live in Virginia.
[muffled trumpet:hwah, hwah, hwah...]
November 4th, 2008 at 8:46 pmI see Rick Santorum's right to vote has been challenged in Allegheny County in Pennsylvania. Now thats what I call Karma! Gotta love it!
November 4th, 2008 at 8:47 pmSeven more states close, less than five minutes from now.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:54 pmThe Midwest is closing up in 5 mins
November 4th, 2008 at 8:55 pmIf nothing else, I am going to toast the fact that we will no longer be molotoved by campaign commercials.
November 4th, 2008 at 8:56 pmFlorida's tightened up - along with my spincter...
November 4th, 2008 at 8:59 pmThe Midwest is closing up in 5 mins
I will be watching my local TV station for news that Shelly Bachmann has lost.
Getting rid of Failin' Palin and Bimbo Bachman in the same night . . . what a great two-bagger!
November 4th, 2008 at 9:01 pmNew England's now solid blue. New Hampshire for Obama.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:01 pmMy state (Colorado) has just closed. should be a good night here.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:01 pmIf you include Oregon, California, Washington Obama is up to 247
November 4th, 2008 at 9:02 pmIt's all over but the celebrating!
And lots of hard work for the next four and eight years.
We have officially entered the post-GDumbya and post-McNumbNuts era.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:03 pmCNN is projecting enough states now to give Obama 174 Electoral Votes as of 7:00 PM. Less than 100 to go.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:04 pm.
Q U E S T I O N:
If Va. has 51% precincts reporting and States like Al or Ga have less than 10% reporting, how is it that States like Al or Ga can be called so early in the reporting process BUT NOT States like Va?
Oh, that's right. The MSM has a lock down on exit polling? F-THAT!!! I mean, isn't this the scenario that Gore ran into...? Early exit polling that just wasn't, somehow, correct?
I see a few gimmies being switched through the night.
.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:06 pmNPR calls New Mexico for Tom Udall. Thats a pickup of 4 seats now. Cousin Mark should win in Colorado as well.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:07 pm.

November 4th, 2008 at 9:08 pmHey Tom. I too am hopeful that Bachamnn is done. I haven't heard any predictions yet but, KARE is reporting that the 6th is showing the lowest turnout in the state. Perhaps the Psycho Shelly supporters are so disgusted they stayed home?
November 4th, 2008 at 9:09 pmFrom MSNBC's perspective, it sounds like things are a little tighter than the polls suggested going in.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:12 pm1% of vote in North Dakota in and CNN gave it to McCain???
November 4th, 2008 at 9:14 pmAn interesting observation from local radio. "The early results are indicating a referendum on negative campaigning. No one who went all out attack mode is doing well".
If that trend continues we may see a bigger change than we had hoped.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:16 pmMSNBC:
"In Virginia, Obama won the votes of 52 percent of men and 56 percent of women, according to exit poll interviews."
But the machines said McCain won due to the adrogynous vote. :)
November 4th, 2008 at 9:19 pmWouldn't that be nice, Pete? The negative campaigning is so pathetic. I would love to see some common decency in politics for once.
How is that for wishful thinking?
November 4th, 2008 at 9:19 pmHey people. This is pretty damn exciting. I mean, sure, it should be an Obama landslide. Even my wife if surfing the results!!!!! How many people are on line following this thing?
November 4th, 2008 at 9:20 pmJames Carville projects Mitch McConnell winning KY senate.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:20 pmFox just gave Ohio to Obama. Little Britty Hume has slashed his throat. Megyn Kelly has ripped off all her clothes and is running around the set screaming. Little Billy Kristol will be in studio in 10 minutes to give his concession speech.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:21 pmEarly results in Ohio look very good for Obama. Up by 12%. He wins this state, its over in my opinion.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:21 pmI have nothing against wishful thinking, tbone. Few of us would be here without a whole bunch of wishful thinking.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:23 pmjust called ohio for obama (msnbc)
November 4th, 2008 at 9:23 pmNPR just called OHIO for Obama! I think thats it folks! Things would really have to go south for Obama at this point.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:25 pmMSMBC declares ohio for obama !!!!!
November 4th, 2008 at 9:25 pmAnd Obama will pick up CA, OR, WA, and HI which will put him over the top.
Barack Obama is now the president-elect.
Congratulations, Mr. President-Elect.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:26 pmIs it too early to pull out the bottle of Scotch? I've been waiting 8 long miserable years for this.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:27 pmThis should send Hume, Kelly and Kristolmeth over a cliff.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:28 pmtbone, with Ohio and Pennsylvanis in the bag for Obama, it is impossible for McCain to win. I don't care what the machines do!
November 4th, 2008 at 9:30 pmor Pennsylvania

November 4th, 2008 at 9:36 pmAhem...President Obama
Try it.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:38 pmObama has a solid lead here in Colorado. Mark Udall is in good shape as well. Now if Betsy Markey can take out Marilyn Musgrave then it will be a great night.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:39 pmtom Says:
Megyn Kelly has ripped off all her clothes and is running around the set screaming.
If only! It would be a nice consolation prize if nothing else....
November 4th, 2008 at 9:41 pmCA, OR, WA,and HI = 77... if the 200 Obama now has holds, it is a for sure president Obama.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:41 pmThey just showed a shot from McSpin's, invite only, election "party". They do NOT look like happy people.

November 4th, 2008 at 9:47 pmThe McCain campaign event is sealed off from the news... Just the Monday Night Football guy to give them comfort as the world implodes around them.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:47 pmCongratulations, my liberal friends. While Florida still looks dicey (Hey, it's Florida) Ohio is indeed the game breaker for McCain.
John McCain has spent his entire life in public service in one way or another. Now that he is safely defeated I hope the Left will be gracious in victory in honoring him. I am certain President Elect Obama will be. Offering McCain the Secretary of Defense portfolio would be a strategic masterstroke and do much to unite the country. Probably too much to hope for, but Hope has been the keyword, eh?
The Wheel turns, and the Wind changes direction. If Obama governs as well as he has campaigned, the US will be in great shape.
So enjoy the evening, denizens of TP. It has been a long ramble in the wilderness for the American Left...soon the politics will begin again, but tonight is your night. Saluatations.
November 4th, 2008 at 9:48 pmOhio: Obama up 13%. Pennsylvania map totally Blue!
November 4th, 2008 at 9:48 pmStick a fork in McCain/Palin. They're done!
It's been a long day. Up at 3 am, at the polling place at 4:45, just walked in the door now. My "Fake Virginia" precinct went overwhelmingly Obama - 1300-400 something. As far as I can tell, it was free and fair and un-f@#ked-with.
Woot!

November 4th, 2008 at 9:57 pmObama and Biden get Ohio and the next Presidency.

Classy Keltoi
November 4th, 2008 at 9:59 pmKeltoi, thanks for your salutations. I think that many of us always had a lot of respect for Senator McCain, until his apparently mentally-challenged campaign handlers turned him into a grumpy, nasty old man. Their campaign tactics were dishonest and divisive, and, of course, the idiocy of picking Governor Palin as McCain's running mate simply proved that the RNC has absolutely no clue as to what most Americans feel is important. It's a shame that they had to drag McCain through their slime.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:00 pmKeith, this thing is going our way. I don't know how to act...

I'd say it is a thousand to one shot, but it would be one of those FDR like moves that could really redraw the map of our politics and history. It would really signal the end of the pointless, endless division. I am good with O. winning, I am very glad to have lived to see a President who isn't a White Dude, but the wounds on the national psyche are so deep...a grand gesture like bring McCain into the cabinet would go a long way to healing them. And I think, were McCain to accept, that he would do well at the job. I believe you all may be in for a surprise at how not-dovish Obama will be - though I could be wrong.
It will sure as hell be fascinating to watch! He could turn out to be anything - the radical leftist the Repubs tried to scare America with, or the triangulating centrist that he defeated in the Clinton machine. There probably aren't 100 people in America who know for sure what he will do.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:01 pmOh, Zooey, just act like your usual classy self. :D

While not as dramatic, it would be almost as good, and I hope it happens. If Sam Nunn were a little younger, he'd be my top pick for a Dem. I could see Webb, too...maybe. Definitely has the resume.
Bill Richardson - Sec of Energy or State? I love him, he'd be good at either, and he has earned some reward.
As far as the drapes, why stop measuring now? :) 'Sides, losing Ohio is the kiss of Death for McCain, it always was if he couldn't get PA.

'Cause O. would be the Boss, katy. McCain couldn't start anything without O.s blessing. Plus, McCain's public image of a earmark killer would obligate him to hack the hell out of the war profiteering. IF he accepted.
But it is more the politics than the policies. In this instance, such an offer would amount to Grand Strategy, while McCain being a "warmonger" would be a tactical considertation.

I suppose those at the McCain private "INVITE ONLY" event aren't the elite base like those at the public calibration Obama's hosting... YES?
.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:13 pmGreat news Zooey! Hadn't heard that.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:13 pmI had loads of respect for John McCain but, the creature he's become isn't going to get a pass. He ran, far and away, the sleaziest Presidential campaign of my lifetime. His name is on the top of the ticket so he gets the blame.
I fear that the divisiveness he fed will be a blight on Obama's administration and the future of this country. He placed his slim hopes on labeling the opposition as, somehow, less American than the GOP Faithful. No concession speech, no matter how gracious, will mitigate that.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:14 pmKeith Says:
I would say Wes Clarke for Sec of Def.
NO, God no. There are many, many Democrats who would be infinitely superior if O. doesn't want to reach across the aisle. Clark will be a thorn in Obamas side should he get Defense, mark my words.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:16 pmColorado and South Dakota, welcome to the 20th century.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:17 pmMurtha keeps his seat.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:19 pmPlease produce evidence about Wesley Clark, Keltoi.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:19 pmSo what's up? I have no tv access and have been very busy with paperwork.I asked Daryll and Tracy_#, and Bam Bam and all but they seem to have evaporated...
November 4th, 2008 at 10:21 pmMurtha keeps his seat.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:21 pmthats good news Zooey.
Yep. I think you are right Pete. If McCain had played his cards differently (and Obama still won), I could see a move like Keltoi suggests. But, to my mind, McCain sabotaged his own competence by acting, well, erratic.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:22 pmIt is done at this point, NBC news puts Obama at 207 Electoral Votes as of 7:23 PST. With the Electoral votes from the California (55), Oregon (7), Washington (11) and Hawaii (4) that puts Obama well above the needed 270 Mark.
Cheers

November 4th, 2008 at 10:26 pmAfter calling Obama the most Leftist politician in the history of the world for the past 20 months, the Republican talking heads are now saying the American people voted for a moderate.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:26 pmThe Denver Post has called it for Obama and Udall here in Colorado. Betsy Markey(D) has a huge lead over Marilyn Musgrave(R) in District 4.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:29 pmI don't think he was all that erratic, tbone. He started out mean, while the Dem nomination was still in doubt, and just kept getting meaner. Granted he let his Chippy and other surrogates do the dirtiest work but, his campaign opened wounds that won't heal quickly.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:30 pmTrue enough. McCain did his best to be nasty, but I guess when I refer to his erratic behavior I am thinking of his policies and staying on message. He and his campaign never seemed on the same page. He seemed out of touch with the voters on many issues (economy in particular), and when the writing on the wall was becoming apparent he tried every smear imaginable. For instance why the hell did Joe the Plumber become such a "star" for their campaign? It seems totally irrational to me. So, perhaps desperate, irrational, or pathetic would be a better term than erratic.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:37 pm"I apologize for the taunting, but I am excited because things seem as if tonight will go Sen. McCain’s way."

I think Nunn or Webb would be better, but Hagel better still for the politics of it.
Clark's handling of the Bosnian War leads me to believe that he will buck the chain of command if he thinks he is right. I think Clark is out for Clark first, last and always. Obama could do much better.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:39 pmAgreed, tbone. Boy! I bet Samjoe the unplumber is kicking himself. He opened every dark detail of his life to the world and couldn't even deliver his home state. Maybe he can move to Alaska and "help" Bible Spice keep her office?

November 4th, 2008 at 10:45 pmKeltoi, I didn't donate time and money to Obama to have Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, McCain as Secretary of Defense. Obama understands the feelings of his people, that's why Hillary didn't get VP. She's earned SCOTUS, McCain's has earned squat.

November 4th, 2008 at 10:54 pmYes, let's have the 894th kid in the class, McCain. [snark]

His People. Hate to break it to you Shayne, we are all His People now. If he truly understands His People, he will offer an olive branch to those that opposed him. It is what a great man would do.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:56 pmKeltoi, you missed my point. None of them are yes men.
That's the difference between a frickin' weak-assed R, and Obama.

November 4th, 2008 at 11:07 pmEnjoy the celebrations. We now have the tools we wanted. The real work is still to come. It's up to all of us to hold ALL our elected officials to a higher standard.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:08 pmKeith Says:
Dubya lost both elections and he didn’t offer an olive branch.
Yeah...how'd that work out for him? Surely he is not going to be the example O follows?
I want Obama to succeed, while I think most if not all here prayed for and delighted in Bush's failures.
All I am trying to say is Obama's primary goal is to deliver on the campaign promise of Change We Can Believe In. That change wasn't policy driven, it was based on how we conduct ourselves. He must lead by example if he wants to rule a united country.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:09 pmI never saw Bush or McCain offer me an olive branch Keltoi. In fact all I ever heard from McCain and Palin was about how corrupt Chicago is. You and he can kiss my midwestern, second generation, Chicago a$$. I love my city and I did not appreciate all the negative things Republicans said about it.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:10 pmNPR/PBS has called Va and FL for Obama. 324 electoral votes! I think we can call that a mandate.

I'm enjoying the moment but, I won't rest easy for a very long time. Tonight is only a beginning.

November 4th, 2008 at 11:41 pmSorry Keltoi. The admirable, if flawed, man who was John McCain essentially died with his embracing the "agents of intolerance" who make up the worst part of the GOP. The empty shell left will always be Flippy McSpin to me.
Now he can redeem himself, to some extent, if he leads the charge to return honor to the GOP. I don't think that will happen. I would guess that he will return to his pattern of speaking moderation and voting Reichwing.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:42 pmHappy late Birthday Zooey--America just gave you an awesome present!!!

mcchimpy's snide snippy remark was a cut-low, typical nasty, snide, ugly-jabbed bs repug comment. That's why his dankass was creamed a long time ago. what idiot.

November 5th, 2008 at 5:45 amEven as we speak, Republicans are gathering at secret meetings all over the country and saying, "OK...now how can we screw this up for everybody?"
November 5th, 2008 at 5:45 amThey replayed President Obama's great nomination speech on TVOne. It still gave me shivers.

November 5th, 2008 at 6:10 amjuan wms on faux noise was making a very touching review about the rise of President Obama, he went into the positives of President Obama and what a great role model he will make.
All very touching.
I kid you not, I watch juan seamlessly turn into a repug and said {Obama} dresses like a normal person.
It's just innate stupidity.

November 5th, 2008 at 8:24 amAfter years of working for it, we in Virginia finally turned our Commonwealth blue. It took a little longer than we expected, but man -- what a night, and what a day to wake up to.
Congratulations, all -- and I look forward to working with all of you (well, except Darryl and Mr. Pee) and President Obama for the next 8 years to dig us out of the wreckage that the republicans have left scattered across this great country that we love.
November 5th, 2008 at 8:54 amThe Dogfather, I'm glad that as Virginians we could pull this off. I hope your voting experience (and that of your family's) went well. Warner was one of the first projections of the night. Obama/McCain VA count had me on pins and needles but I gradually felt relief as more precincts reported. Only Bill Day (House) did not win, neither did I expect him to, but I was glad to vote for someone who works with Habitat for Humanity and went back to school for a Master's in counseling to serve as a mental health counselor even after earning an MBA from Harvard.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:11 amCongratulations, USA!
Congratulations, World!
