At 11:00 pm EST, the networks call it…

The AP reports John McCain has called Barack Obama to concede.
UPDATE: McCain delivers his concession speech. The crowd boos at the mention of Obama’s name, but McCain holds his hands out, symbolically imploring them not to react with anger. McCain says, “I pledge to [Obama] tonight to do all in my power to help him lead us through the many challenges we face.”
UPDATE II: Obama reportedly told McCain: “I need your help, you’re a leader on so many important issues.”
UPDATE III: President Bush calls Obama. “What an awesome night for you, your family and your supporters,” Bush said, telling Obama, “You are about to go on one of the great journeys of life. Congratulations and go enjoy yourself.”
UPDATE IV: President-elect Obama delivers his address: “The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America – I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you – we as a people will get there.”
WHOOHOO!

November 4th, 2008 at 11:23 pmMcCain is making his concession speech.. he’s trying to be gracious. With some success. I’d like him to put his audience in line, though. I hope he will go back to Arizona– or to Obama’s cabinet– with dignity, commanding the respect he once deserved.
The people have spoken, my friends.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:25 pmHey Copano-Texian Trash – Just wait. “Arnold for 2016.” The nazi will challenge Obama. Until then – remember the NSA. You think they don’t know you’re address by now???
November 4th, 2008 at 11:27 pmIs he going to speak until 2012?
November 4th, 2008 at 11:27 pmPalin wants to speak and declare her run for 2012 so bad she is nearly wetting herself.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:29 pmBut a very good concession speech by McCain….sounded like the candidate of 2000 not the candidate of 2008.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:30 pmA high-minded campaign prevailed in twenty-first century America. I can now say with conviction to my children that anyone can become President of the United States. And, for the first time in a long time, I have some modicum of faith in the intellect of the American public.
History has been made today. May President Obama and Vice-President Biden serve this country with honor, distinction, and success.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:30 pmObama: blended for perfection.
We still need to return to hand-counted paper ballots in our elections to prevent any more threats of Republican electronic election theft in the future. The 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections were stolen by criminal Republicans.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:31 pmI second it:
FCK YEAH!
I.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:32 pmAm.

Dr. Hussein Matt Says:
Now that Obama is officially the President-Elect, I would like to remind all the haters out there that death threats against Obama are now considered TREASON… please keep that in mind for those of you who screamed “Country First!”

Ninique and I say a heartfelt “yeah” to this. :)
November 4th, 2008 at 11:33 pmMaybe if these words– terrorist, socialist, anti-American– had not been thrown around, there would be less animosity. There would be more cooperation. And peace.
How long do you think it will take to heal that? Let’s try very hard.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:34 pmCongratulations to the United States of America. You did it!
November 4th, 2008 at 11:36 pmrjkitt Says:
Arnold is a naturalized citizen he cannot run for president
November 4th, 2008 at 11:37 pmI don’t care about the people in the McCain crowd who booed his name. I don’t care about the trolls that come onto this board to spout ignorant hatred.
Right now I am just…I don’t even know how to describe it. It’s like being able to breathe for the first time in 8 years.
Hope. Such a little word, but it means everything. After seeing this country turn into something I was ashamed to be a part of, after seeing the whole world turn against us in fear and anger…to have the actual, concrete hope that things will soon change, that the country I live in and was born a citizen of will soon be something I can be proud of once more…is the greatest thing I’ve ever felt.
Thank you to Barack Obama, to the people who have worked so tirelessly for his cause, for the millions and millions who volunteered and in the end who voted, and made this feeling possible.

________
It’s a good question. The McCain/Rove machine created this monster, and they don’t seem too eager to try and stop it. Though I’m happy tonight, I’m also fearful for the future.
We may have a Democratic President in the White House, but it’s going to be a long time before we have a united country.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:38 pmI never thought an African-American, or even a half African-American half Caucasian would be elected President of the United States in my lifetime.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:39 pmNevada for Obama, just announced. A great night in America. Gonna be an interesting day in my 9th grade history class tomorrow. Wow. This is history. 1621-First slaves arrive in the colonies. 2008- African American President.

November 4th, 2008 at 11:40 pmWay to go TP. We all helped.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:41 pmTears of pure joy…
November 4th, 2008 at 11:42 pmHope that doesn’t come true. That and the whole Taco Bell thing. Taco Bell kinda blows. I digress. Go Obama!

“Arnold is a naturalized citizen he cannot run for president”.
Let’s hope they don’t change the rules…
November 4th, 2008 at 11:43 pm…looking forward to the best night’s sleep in a LONG time tonight.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:46 pmTonight I cried.
Tonight, I will gloat!
Tomorrow, I will be more humble and respectful.
cRapture Ready, Tracy_5fingers, faux John Kerry, and especially republicanshatefacts:
Kiss my lilly white, American loving A$$!!!
Tonight, I will go to sleep, knowing our great nation decided on a leader, not based on the color of his skin, but on his ability, his intelligence, and his ideas.
Tonight, I got to bed as a proud citizen of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
To all here who have endured these last 8 years of hell, and especially those who have endured my posts, I thank you. Each and everyone of you. I don’t think I could have survived the political turmoils without you.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:46 pmIt’s been a wonderful ride, ThinkProgress has. I look forward to the future, as finally progressives have a voice!
And thank you, to our newly elected 44th President, who has given it citizens hope, something so lacking the last few years.
Good night, and God bless!
I am touched. Having endured the most horrendous 8 years it seemed like the sun would not shine ever again. The relief is epic, I am in tears. God bless America. And God bless ThinkProgress for bringing us together. Together we have endured and we have prevailed. God Bless us all!
November 4th, 2008 at 11:48 pmWhat a wonderful evening this is. Amazing. Way to go America, you got it right. Excellent campaign, Mr. President-Elect. Congratulations!
November 4th, 2008 at 11:49 pmIt’s official:
President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
Now it’s time to kick some Bush and Cheney Butt!!!!
(I know, I know, January is still months away, but there is now hope that the Bush/Cheney crime syndicate that has used and abused the White House for eight long, long years will finally face a reckoning for all the crimes they’ve committed…whereas McCain and Palin would have swept the Bush/Cheney crimes under the rug, refusing to even consider investigating and charging any of their fellow corrupt Republicans for any of the numerous violations of “the rule of law” and the U.S. Constitution during the obscene Bush/Cheney years).
And in listening to Gergen right now on CNN I realized that on inauguration day in January 2009, it will be like September 12th, 2001, the day after the infamous right-wing religious fundamentalist terrorist attacks on 9/11, when their was an outpouring of support for America from around the world.
The entire eight years of the Bush/Cheney has been like one long, long, long September 11th, 2001, and when these two final leave the White House in January, I feel that the world will respond to President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden with the same level of support and enthusiasm they displayed on the day after the 9/11 attacks, giving our beloved nation a desperately-needed international boost, as the world watches Barack Obama ascend to the presidency while George W. Bush slinks out the White House’s back door and Dick Cheney counts all the blood-stained Halliburton stock he has in his so-called “blind trust.”
In other words, on inauguration day in January and the changing of the guard in the White House, much of America and the world will shout “Free at last, free at last, thank God, we’re free at last!!! of the insanity, immaturity and corruption of the Bush/Cheney years in office. Finally, America and the rest of the world will be emancipated from inarguably the worst administration in American history…and can move on…to a brighter, more sane future for our nation’s children and the children of the world.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:49 pmI cried tonight once it became official, both in relief and in joy. We are finally heading toward healing so many wounds.
It’s not over by any means. Obama will be an incredible leader for us, but it’s We, The People that he will lead toward restoring our country. We still have a lot of work to do… but it’s work I’m looking forward to. Tonight was the first step of many we’ll take. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work, America.
:oD
November 4th, 2008 at 11:50 pmWhat an awesome night for America!
November 4th, 2008 at 11:52 pm#49: You’re right. It’s going to be a long time. Our country has a long-standing tradition of division. That is the primary argument against conservatism.
But. Tonight we were given some degree of hope. And even though my state was– well at least I didn’t have to stand idly bye and watch. Because this generation– mine– grew up with George W. Bush. And despite the unfair assumption that young voters are ignorant– we knew something was missing over the last eight years. We knew as well as the rest of you.
So for the first time– in my entire life– I am proud of my country. There’s no need to lose sleep in November, this year..
November 4th, 2008 at 11:53 pmThe Reich is history………long live Democracy!!!!!!!!
November 4th, 2008 at 11:53 pmFinally! The end of an error. Well done America. :-D
November 4th, 2008 at 11:56 pm#61: YES!!! That is all I can say to that..
November 4th, 2008 at 11:56 pmMcCain actually gave a great concilliatory speech. If he had been speaking like this all along, I might have actually felt some support for him.
Interestingly, at points his own crowd booed and he tried to use his hands to sshhh them down. I wonder if he is starting to see the flames of hatred that have been lit ?
Oh, and drop the “elect” and celebrate ***PRESIDENT** OBAMA !
November 4th, 2008 at 11:58 pmOh where is our friend obamagr8?
Come out, come out, wherever you are!
I saved one of his comments from back in August:
Six months from now, TP will be shut down and many of you fellows will be chatting on some other board, wondering how Obama managed to lose the election.
The American public doesn’t care what the price of oil was in 2002 or how much wind power we can generate by 2020. They want answers now and putting on a sweater will not be enough.
August 8th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Heh!
November 4th, 2008 at 11:59 pmCongratulations, Mr. President Obama!
November 5th, 2008 at 12:02 amMSNBC is covering it, man. It’s going on right now. :)
At least you don’t have to wait until 3am for it..!
November 5th, 2008 at 12:02 am“Sasha and Malia, I love you more than you could imagine, and you have earned the new puppy that’s coming with us to the White House.”
..hehe.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:11 amBiden’s mother beat McCain’s mother. Yea! :)
November 5th, 2008 at 12:20 amThere is hope yet for democracy in this country.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:23 amI am ecstatic. It’s been a long night of watching the returns (and watching pundits prattle when there were no new returns to report), but so, so worth it.
I know many people who post here worked very hard to make this happen. I thank you.
Not only am I happy that we elected an inspiring leader who’s the best person to lead our country, but he just happens to be of mixed race and has a middle name of Hussein — and I hope the world sees that neither one of those stopped Americans from electing him.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:23 amI still can’t believe this. Everything this country has been through, and all the obstacles we have overcome together, tonight is a night that shows we still have a voice.
I was always jealous of my parents living through the civil liberty battles of the 60s, and the anti-war movement.
Well, now I have something to tell MY kids about. I can’t wait.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:26 am.
O.K.
76 days left of Bush in Office…
… 77 days and he’s arrestable!

November 4th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Ummm…no. The “idiot” who did it was George Bush Jr. with the complete and utter failure of his administration.
Nobody, from two Republican governors and Ari Fleischer, to McCain himself, could name any differences between McCain’s policies and those of Bush. It really was comical watching the Gov. of SC stare into the CNN cameras as he declared that, yes, there were differences, yet he nervously searched for them, only to come up empty-handed. That’s what the people were looking for. They didn’t want a third Bush term but that is exactly what they would have gotten with McCain.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:44 am11. I expect the Democrats to gain some seats in the House and Senate, but not enough to stop the use of the fillibuster or to guarantee override of Presidential veto power. I expect the Republicans to win the Presidency, in part by winning key swing states like Ohio and Florida. Dean blew it in Florida big time. Thank him for your lost opportunity.
P.S. Save this post. Let’s revisit it in November.

poor gg,
wrong on so many levels.
:)
November 5th, 2008 at 12:44 amMiss Molly,
My wife and I noticed that too, when McCain gave what I thought was a very open and thoughtful concession speech, mention of Obama’s name led to booing. When Obama mentioned McCain the crowd cheered.

November 5th, 2008 at 12:45 amGoodnight, everyone! Let’s continue this celebration later today!
November 5th, 2008 at 12:46 amOur long national nightmare is over!

November 5th, 2008 at 12:53 amHot Air, Little green Footballs, Red State, et al have all shut down their registrations for comments. Hilarious. Someone should make a point of making a record of this. They can dish it out but boy they can’t take it.
Congratulations, President-Elect Obama and Vice President_Elect Biden.
Well done, indeed.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:53 am#93: You’re thanking the nightmare for being so terrible that we had to wake up in cold sweats, screaming???
No, no.. I see your point. :P But thank that man for nothing.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:55 amjoe cantwell @89.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:58 amI really respect your work. The balance of subtle and harsh is so magical!
Halleluiah.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:59 amHey, everybody.
We win.
Sure has been nice to be here this long, dark time.
Hope everybody is as hung over or exhausted or hoarse or footsore or as chapped or as whatever as makes them happy come tomorrow.
This is the best thing to happen in a long, long time.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:01 amNow we will smear Obama the way you smeared bush. 47% of Americans are against him. He has a small margin of error. We will support America’s enemies like Russia. We will undermine this man.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:06 amOK, I already shed tears. Honeymoon is over. Goddamnit I want results! No messing around! Our country is going down the crapper! Let’s go Obama! Turn this neocon globalist theocrat shit around! It’s just after midnight here!
November 5th, 2008 at 1:08 amSorry I tend to be impatient.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:09 amLet the smears begin Says:
“I’m a dumbass who belongs to a party unable to accept responsibility for their own defeat”
Fixed it for you.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:10 amI can’t help but wonder… How many of Daryll’s Rapture Ready friends are waiting, on their roofs, for Jebus to “take them home”?
G’night good people.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:12 amYou too trolls, wherever you are.
BUSH: What an awesome night for you
Is awesome the only synonym for great Bush Jr know?
BUSH: You are about to go on one of the great journeys of life.
Kinda like marriage, just one of lifes many journeys most people go through?
BUSH: Congratulations and go enjoy yourself.
Yeah being President is just a 4-8 year long joyride. “Go enjoy yourself”?? Mkay thanks now go F yourself. Dont let the door hit you
Thank God the President of the US three months from now will be a decent intelligent educated eloquent rational person. That we no longer will have to hear “awesome this awesome that from the most powerful person in the world
November 5th, 2008 at 1:14 amjoe cantwell, good job unearthing Gigi’s prognostication.
Makes a nice bookend withy Daryll’s prediction from earlier this evening that “I am excited because things seem as if tonight will go Sen. McCain’s way.”

November 5th, 2008 at 1:17 amWhat A Wonderful night.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:19 am#83 Why McCain Lost?
How about a repudiation of roveian politics due to a clearly superior opponent?
It is hopefully also the beginning of the end of the Republican party that manipulated the majority’s fears and angers after 9/11 to enable their nefarious plans.
Go Obama
November 5th, 2008 at 1:22 amWhat a beautiful, wonderful night – and Colorado is finally BLUE !!! I hope I can spell okay because we drank about 4 bottles of champagne with our neighbors. I thought McCain tried to be gracious, but the people at his rally have absolutely no class.
Oh my God – President OBAMA – if I died right now it would be fine.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:28 amFinally, the rest of the country figured out what we in Illinois have known for years, that Republicans are hopelessly corrupt, and they must be thrown out of office!
November 5th, 2008 at 1:34 am“Let the smears begin” babbles incoherently:
Now we will smear Obama the way you smeared bush.
You already have, or have you forgotten the smears -you know, “Obama is a Muslim” kind of lies? And yet, Obama still won the presidency. Suck. It. Up.
We will support America’s enemies like Russia. We will undermine this man.
Are you openly saying you are going to commit treason? Wow, you reichwingers really have no moral compass…
November 5th, 2008 at 1:34 amI have to say I cannot believe McCain got 47% of the popular vote.
Who are these people? Haven’t they endured enough abuse for the past 8 years or so? Are they benefiting from the current financial meltdown? Are they military contractors? Have they not felt the economic slowdown?
Or do they really think Bush had absolutely nothing to do with the current state of affairs?
Seriously, who are these people?
November 5th, 2008 at 1:40 amBest birthday present ever!!! This is truly an historic moment.
Celebrate tonight, then keep up the pressure for change tomorrow.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:42 amJohn Kerry Says:
ZOGBY SATURDAY: Republican John McCain has pulled back within the margin of error… The three-day average holds steady, but McCain outpolled Obama 48% to 47% in Friday, one day, polling. He is beginning to cut into Obama’s lead among independents, is now leading among blue collar voters, has strengthened his lead among investors and among men, and is walloping Obama among NASCAR voters. Joe the Plumber may get his license after all

November 5th, 2008 at 1:59 amI’m glad I had the opportunity to watch this moment in history with you. It’s been a long fought battle that I know we have both witnessed within each other. We have made great strides, but much work is still needed.
“my brother need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life. To be remembered simply as a good and decent man who saw wrong and tried to right it, who saw suffering and tried to heal it, who saw war and tried to stop it. Those of us who loved him and are taken to [his] rest today …. pray that what he was to us, what he wished for others will someday come to pass for all the world. As he said many times, in many parts of this nation, to those he touched and those who sought to touch him… Some men see things as they are and say why, i dream things that never were and say why not.”

November 5th, 2008 at 2:04 amFrom the invocation through Obama’s final “God Bless America” it was a moving, uplifting delivery. Obama has the potential to be not just a politician, but a true statesman. His ability to remain above the fray, and to be dignified and respectful with those whom he disagrees is an example for us all.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:09 amThe only sad thing is that there still loony-toon whackos in Minnesota. MSNBC projected Michele Bachmann the winner over Elwyn Tinklenberg. How in the world could anyone with even half a brain vote for this horrible excuse of a human being much less a representative?
Congratulations though to Barack Obama! He withstood all the mudslinging and weathered all the storms. Its time for all of us to do our part in restoring our reputation and return America to the great nation that it is capable of being.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:15 amAmericans won tonight as we have an employee for the job of President and Vice President who will work for the American people. Now tomorrow it’s time for Obama/Biden to get to work.

Kindly provide evidence of any voting fraud to the appropriate authorities, if you have any. This venue is not an appropriate investigatory body. Thank you for your forebearance in the future.
Yes. We finally did it. I feel very strange tonight, as if I’d set down a burden that I didn’t even realize I’d been carrying for eight years or more. A burden of shame for what has been done in the name of America. A burden of shame for what’s been done in my name. Now we can start the long climb back up to what America was supposed to stand for.
Come back in four years, Copano_Texian, and deliver your judgement upon us then. We gave your ilk eight. If we have bettered the condition of America, then you must admit so, and hopefully join in the work of Americans to improve America. If things aren’t better, you may then return to hurling your invective and baseless accusations.
But tonight you are nothing, and your conspiracy theories have no more weight than the wind.

You don’t care much for our country do you? You like giving all our money tyrant shieks and corporations? You like CEO’s sending all our jobs overseas so they can pay themselves $20 million a year? By your own words you’ve just admitted what the republicans tried to pin on Obama. That he was an Anti-American terrorist. We knew it wasn’t true. We always knew it was you.

Uh… do you have any evidence to back up what you babble? Yeah… I didn’t think so…
the media not only talking up you candidate, but hiding the truth about his past.
Just what that “truth” is, exactly? And apparently even FoxNews was part of that vast left-wing conspiracy, because they also were unable to shine any light on Obama’s “past”.
Were your parent related to each other by any chance?

Funny, we’ve been saying that about you guys for YEARS!
But rejoice, because your life will get better too, because I doubt you’re one of the top 2% which always benefits from a Republican administration.
November 5th, 2008 at 5:23 amWe’re off to a good start. But don’t forget–America has been in a state of undeclared civil war ever since 2000.
This isn’t over till every Republican in America is driven out of the country.
November 5th, 2008 at 5:37 amFollowing last night’s defeat of Sarah Palin, ardent Monty Python fans came out to show their support for the world’s best Palin….Michael!
To celebrate the national treasure that is Michael Palin (and the fact that the hilarious Monty Python’s Flying Circus TV show is just out as a new DVD box set), Singing Lumberjacks, Spanish Inquisitors, Mounties, Silly Walkers and Holy Grail Knights took to the streets to support Michael.
The demo marched through Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and on to the US embassy (pictured), picking up supporters along the way.
The ‘There’s Only One Palin’ protest inspired everyone to reclaim our favourite Palin’s name!

“Let the smears begin Says:
Now we will smear Obama the way you smeared bush. 47% of Americans are against him. He has a small margin of error. We will support America’s enemies like Russia. We will undermine this man.”
First of all 100% of America did not vote, more like one third. And MORE than half of those voted for Obama. Go home and brush your tooth you ding dong.
November 5th, 2008 at 6:57 amThe apparent GOP talking point (courtesy of Morning Joe) is that America should brace itself for the huge let down because Obama has been “deified” by the electorate and he is sure to disappoint.
November 5th, 2008 at 7:08 amThey are cheering at the stock markets today. Investors who were hanging on to their money are celebrating because there will be new economic growth. I think the whole world just breathed a huge sigh of relief.
November 5th, 2008 at 7:09 amA few years ago, I was asked: Do you think there will be a woman President before there’s a black President?
I answered as I believed: “Yes. America won’t be ready for a black President for a while yet.”
I’m so glad that I was wrong! When I voted yesterday morning, I was still apprehensive that the right-whiners would be able to pull an upset in election shenanigans! Again, I’m SO GLAD that I was wrong!
God has brought the US President Elect Obama to help lead us out of the darkness where Pres. Bush and the Republicans have brought us!
November 5th, 2008 at 7:16 amYay US!!!!!!
Trolls (of the vicious variety) and neocons: keep up your hate and divisiveness. That way we can recognize the “enemy within” and marginalize the danger you pose to the country and yourselves. And remember — speak your mind, even if it is hateful, but death threats are illegal, and death threats to the Presdent of the US are treason. We will see how many of you who, for 8 years, touted “country first” and “the president is the commander in chief whether you like him (or her) or not” actually BELIEVE what you spouted. We didn’t like Bush, but we were here for the ride, without any treasonous activity. Let’s see some truth.

November 5th, 2008 at 7:49 ami don’t know about other cities – but los angeles was full of pure joy!!!! people milling about the streets downtown, tipsy, happy, the honking of car horns…oh, was this the riot the right was so scared of? ha!!!!
November 5th, 2008 at 7:49 ammy favorite part of election night: i took a cab back from my polling place. i said hello to the cab driver, told him where i was going, then there was silence, with only npr naming senator obama as president-elect obama. a few moments later the cab driver says, “i am a 50 year old man, an armenian, i love so much about this country. but, what i love most is what i’ve been saying for months: for the most part, most americans do NOT have racist blood flowing through their veins.”
melodramatic? maybe…but, i thought it was an awesome thing to hear right after hearing that obama had won.
WHEEEEEEEEE!!!!
It wasn’t a dream!! It’s real!!!! Finally had my cuppa joe and am fully awake and functional. I think I can quit pinching myself now.
Like Robin Meade says on CNN–”Scotch-guard the carpet, the new puppy is coming to the White House!”

HAHAHAHA his show is obsolete like his i’m-not-a-repug ideas. I hope MSNBC makes him stop being loofahboy long lost Asian brother. We already saw that episode on “King of the Hill.”
Ain’t nobody gonna tolerate 8 yrs+ of his incorrect, incohirant out-of-sync trash talking.
And joey, the kool-aid taste great. I would offer you a cool glass full, but I don’t want you to wet your nappie.
November 5th, 2008 at 8:05 ami must add, to democrat soldier, that i have always said – since about the age of 14, that i would see a black male president before a woman. do not get me wrong, seriously – i think obama is freaking awesome, and i have shed so many emotional tears over this election. and last night was a night i will NEVER forget in my lifetime. obama has opened the door for other minorities to be judged by their character first – and not their skin NOR their gender.
November 5th, 2008 at 8:05 ambut, this is why i still believe i may never see a woman as president in my lifespan – or, if i do, it will be when i’m super, super old. the gender roles are no where near on a level of equality. equality meaning – judge me HUMAN first, FIRST always. that, and women in power, due to the gender roles, can not win. if a woman is tough, or “masculine” as men have titled that trait, she’s a “ball-buster”, and a butt of jokes. if she cries, or shows any sign of the so-called “weaker” emotions – she’s too much an emotional wreck of a wimp to lead the country, and most especially the armed forces.
i know most men, and many women, might take offense to my opinion. but, i do think it’s not only spot on – it’s what keeps women from truly, truly being a LARGE part of power in this country. my god, we still don’t even get paid the same damned amount of pay for the same freaking job as a man. sheesh.
ending on a joyful note, though: WE GOT OUR COUNTRY BACK!!!!
Somewhere, in an undisclosed dark, damp cell there is a small group of programmers with “Diebold” uniforms screaming, “We did the best we could…..!!!!” While a shadowy figure, roughly Cheney-shaped, approaches them and says, “Bwaaawk! Begin the waterboarding, and get me some electrodes.”
November 5th, 2008 at 8:08 amOh, and KKKarl Rove: the best thing you can do right now is to swallow a pack or two of mentos and slam down a 2-liter of coke. That’ll make it all better……

I know First Lady Michelle Obama will change that pronto.
Hillary wasn’t the right woman for so many reasons, it had absolutely nothing to do with sexism. Hillary became the sameoldsameold real quick. Her demeanor after her lost proved volumes towards her personality. Her and her husband’s lack of hustle for Sen. Obama (it wasn’t needed after all; that was proven early) ended Hillary’s presidential career. It’s her fault.

Herr dubyah was a bipartisan president?
That article is a total load of crap. Is this going to be the new theme on Bush: saving his “legacy”? Bush was a self-serving, party-first partizan hack, and puppet for the neocon agenda. He is a traitor and a criminal, and trying to sugar coat anything about his administration is beyond bizzarre. I have no pity or sympathy for him or any of his toadies or pals. His legacy, as history will record it, will be one of the darkest times in American history (and that is going up against some dark times). The divisiveness that the republicans hve engaged in for the last 8 years will continue to scar us for many years to come.
But the healing has begun.
November 5th, 2008 at 8:51 amThank God that this election is over and America’s getting back on track! Compare and contrast the dignified, composed, astute campaign that President Elect (God, I Love the sound of that!!!) Obama to the screeching, shrieking freak show that the republicans put on. We’ve got a Statesman and a Uniter, a true builder of consesus heading in to the White House! Let’s all keep up our efforts, send him our best and all pull together to cure the Nation of it’s ills. It won’t be easy, but We, The People of the United States can, and will get ‘er done!

November 5th, 2008 at 9:30 amSome folks are saying that McCain’s concession speech was “gracious and warm.” On racial matters, I found it ignorant at best and vicious at worst. McCain summed up racial relations in the past as having “stained” the country’s reputation and “denied some Americans the full blessings of American citizenship,” then he referred to Booker T Washington being invited to the White House by Teddy Roosevelt as having occasioned “outrage in many quarters.” Thus did he trivialize almost to non-existence two centuries of slavery and a century of Jim Crow, lynching and pervasive and pernicious racism. Even Reagan did better than this, but I suppose to the all-white crowd in Phoenix (I watched quite a while and saw not a single black face or even a clearly Hispanic one) McCain’s words were quite a revelation. Later, towards his closing, McCain added that “Americans never hide from history.” Truly astounding words.
After trivializing slavery and racism, McCain got ugly. He suggested that the election of an African-American to the presidency should erase the “memories” of the past and that it showed that we are “a world away from the cruel and prideful bigotry of that time” (namely, the time when TR invited BTW to the White House). Then came these words: “Let there be no reason now for any American to fail to cherish their citizenship in this, the greatest nation on earth.” This strikes me as a slap at Michelle Obama for having said that once she had not been proud of America. More broadly, it further suggests that African-Americans, Hispanics, women, gays, and other disaffected individuals have no reason to be disaffected. They have their token now, and thus have no right or reason to feel the memories of past injustice or the daily sting of present ones. Well if he says so…..
November 5th, 2008 at 10:02 amCongratulations to Senator Obama and his supporters.
Listened to his speech last night. The man speaks beautifully.
bit is praying that the country is as happy with its choice of President on Nov 5, 2012 as it is today.

November 5th, 2008 at 10:19 amCongratulations to Obama. I wish him well. He’s sure going to need it after the mountain of rubble after the past 8 years.
