The Oregonian reports that State Rep. Jeff Merkley, the Speaker of the state house of representatives, has defeated incumbent Republican Sen. Gordon Smith. Democrats have now picked up six Senate seats, including the defeats of three Republican incumbents.

November 5th, 2008 at 9:01 pmGreat! And Chambliss/Martin in Georgia is going to a runoff. I could be happy with 57 or 58 seats in the Senate.
November 5th, 2008 at 9:04 pmAny word on the Franken / Other assface tossup?
November 5th, 2008 at 9:11 pmI’m proud to say that I helped on this one.

Funny, that’s not what I just heard on the local NPR station. The race has not been called and only 80% of the votes have been counted. At the moment, Smith holds a lead of about 1500. However, a huge portion of the uncounted votes are here in Multnomah County which is about as Blue as it gets. I think it’s virtually impossible for Smith to counter those votes with any uncounted rural votes. So it’s safe to smile, but not yet to dance.
November 5th, 2008 at 9:28 pmGood news for our democracy! Now Franken goes to automatic recount. Looks like Ted Stevens may win… anyone know if his BFF’s at VECO had anything to do with Alaskan voting machines? I just don’t see how he could have pulled this one off without a little “help” from his crooked friends.
PEACE
November 5th, 2008 at 9:29 pmUh… Mandate?

Alaskans are clearly crazy. Don Young has also been re-elected. Apparently, they love their felons.

The, uh, “good folk”, ***… cough…***, of Louisiana did re-elect Jefferson too.

Stevens was down at least 15% before Nov.4th.
For the most part electoral-vote has bee accurate … except for Stevens. Go figure.
November 5th, 2008 at 9:50 pmKeep ‘em comin’!
BTW, I heard that No. Carolina is Obama’s but it won’t be official until 12/1. That’s 15 more electoral votes, and another red state turned blue.
November 5th, 2008 at 10:42 pmCNN still has Merkley ahead by one point, but it hadn’t been called. Also, they have Obama one point ahead of McCain, but not yet declared. ????

Who’s “god-less” now BUUitch?
November 5th, 2008 at 11:51 pmI’m an Oregonian, life-long Dem, and I voted for Merkley. But in a way, I hate to see Smith lose. My sense is that he’s a good and decent man who got caught up in really bad political movement–the radical right GOP. Tragic really.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:55 pmWooHoo… I knew it was going to happen when they reported that the only votes left were in two of the most liberal counties in Oregon. Bye Bye Gordo, don’t let the door hit you where the good lord split you. I don’t think I could have stood another 6 years of Gordo.

ARE YOU CRAZY? How long have you lived in Oregon? I’ve only lived here for four years and I knew what a big phony Smith was. When it came time for re-election, he started sounding moderate and pandering to the liberals. But as soon as he was re-elected he went back to being the right wing neoCON he has always been. His voting record with Bush is something around 85%. Oregon will not miss Gordon Smith and I for one don’t feel at all sorry for him.

I think it is quite possible that both Stevens and Young had a little help with their friends in government. I don’t buy that the polls were that wrong. They had Young down by 5-6 for over a month and Stevens way down since his conviction.

I hear you, but let me offer another perspective. Lincoln Chafee. He could have gotten caught got up in the radical right nonsense, but he didn’t. He lost his Senate seat, but not his sense. Highly recommend his book to anyone who wants an insight into the craziness that confronted us this last 8 years.
November 6th, 2008 at 8:06 amObama turns red states blue, and, drum roll, there’s no more Dole’s or Bush’s in government come January 20…
November 6th, 2008 at 8:39 amCongratulations, Oregon. You did it!
November 6th, 2008 at 9:07 amGood riddance to Gordon Smith. He did a fine job of representing the interests of the wealthy and powerful….the rest of us not so much.
