Fox’s Carl Cameron: Palin ‘didn’t understand that Africa was a continent.’

Today, Fox News’ campaign reporter Carl Cameron unloaded some startling undisclosed reports of Sarah Palin’s incompetence that he had been given off-the-record on the condition they not be released until the conclusion of the campaign:

CAMERON: There was great concern in the McCain campaign that Sarah Palin lacked a degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate, a vice president, and a heartbeat away from the presidency.

We are told by folks that she didn’t know what countries were in NAFTA — the North American Free Trade Agreement. That’d be Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. We’re told that she didn’t understand that Africa was a continent, rather than a series — a country just in itself. A whole host of questions that caused serious problems about her knowledgeability.

Cameron also disclosed that Palin “didn’t accept preparation” for the Katie Couric interview. Watch it:

Soooo the Couric interview was the “real deal.”

    Frightening.

How did that vetting thing work out for ya McCain? HEH?! HEH?!

  3. Gregor Samsa says:

She didn’t know what countries were in NAFTA!!??

How difficult is it be to remember three names? Three! It only takes a cursory knowledge of geography.

I could never have imagined her level of incompetence.

But I suppose the Republican base is a-ok with this revelation, because they couldn’t find Canada in a map if their life depended on it…

  4. Jim Wolf359 says:

OMG! And to thihk that up until about 3 weeks ago, their was the possibility of her being a heartbeat away. I Knew she wasn’t the brightest bulb in the box but still……

Maybe they just gave her the degree in Journalism to get rid of her.

  7. tbone says:

The sick thing is that these F*@&s were fighting to put her one step from the presidency. Sorry folks, but Country First would mean canning an incompetent candidate for a competent one.

The only alternative is that they are going to throw her under the bus as a scapegoat and humiliate the hell out of her.

    Either way, totally classless.

  8. drago says:

    Palin is BREATHTAKINGLY IGNORANT.

The only thing worse than that are the people who voted for her. Shameful.

  9. tbone says:

I’m sure she just forgot Mexico because she can’t see it from Alaska.

  13. Gregor Samsa says:

She probably looked at the word “NAFTA” and said: “Can I buy a vowel, please?”

  14. stefan says:

I’m sure this is just the beginning – I’m sure tomorrow we’ll hear something nasty from the Palin people about McCain’s staff, and a few hours or a day later McCain’s people will let out a little more – and the floodgates will open. Or lord to get a sound track of each side’s yelling!

No wonder the people on the Right like her so much – she totally exemplifies their own self-indulgent self-serving ignorance.

    Here’s to Palin/Lieberman 2012!

  15. MapleStreet says:

CAMERON: There was great concern in the McCain campaign ….

Really dumb question: Palin showed that she didn’t know that Africa was a continent ( ? a la Kelly Pickler on “Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader”. Hungry ? That’s a country ?)

As he knew this, why didn’t he report this ?

Wouldn’t journalistic ethics have him report it ?

Wouldn’t his duty as an American and wanting to see the republic prosper also mandate that he report it ?

  16. blue state bob says:

Where was she in 1st grade when you learn basic sh!t like that? Seriously, how completely stupid is she. Is she really retarded, I mean that is her IQ in the mental retardation range? Seriously, is she freaking actually officially retarded???

  17. JimboSlice says:

Looking back at the RCP average you can see that McCain did fantastic coming out of his convention (as one would expect) maintaining a lead over 2 points from 9/8-9/14, then starting with the 9/15 average we see that Obama shot up. What happened there?
Well generally it takes 3 days for the events to filter into RCP polling #’s so the trend towards Obama in the populiation began around 9/12, and only manafest itself in polls released by 9/15, that was before Lehman collapsed.

What happened on 9/12 and the day before? Sarah Palin sat down for her first national interview with Charlie Gibson, that is the inflection point in the publics views, the first taste America got of Sarah Palin America did NOT like.

  20. Gregor Samsa says:

And the question remains: How does a person with that level of ignorance get to be governor?

Then again, another equally ignorant Republican semi-moron managed to get himself into the White House… twice…

First question: Does she know what NAFTA stands for? Because that whole “North American” part would be a give away. There are three whole countries in North America. How hard is that to learn? And her state is a member of one of those countries, and abuts another. That’s two of the three countries. Couldn’t she close her eyes and think really really hard and come up with that other border country?

I swear, every time I take a moment to let it sink in that we are looking forward towards President Obama and his brilliant administration, I tear up. That we might have ended up with a President Palin and the First Dud makes me want to beat the crap out of McCain, and his staff that tried their best to cover up her idiocy.

  45. shoeless says:

I used to respect John McCain. Now, I too hate him. I hate him for playing a practical joke on our country by picking Sarah Palin, and I hate him for inciting violence against Barack Obama during his campaign.

Although, I must admit, when he picked the mayor of Wasilla to be his Vice President, I laughed until I cried.

It was quite a joke, but I hate him for pulling it, nonetheless.

  46. spencers mom says:

Pete, I agree with you. When we think about just how many times McCain sat there and with a straight face told us how qualified Palin was, how ready she was on day one, how proud he was to have her as his running mate, his lying makes me hate him, too.

McCain sold his soul to win the presidency and in the process lost them both. His legacy of “honor, integrity and service” became a punchline and shown to be the farce it probably was all long. And I’ll never be able to hear the term “maverick” without associating it with a pair of lying losers.

  48. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

At my job tonight I ran into a nice couple with Obama pins still attached to their clothes. They told me that they had lived in Italy for over a year and several years abroad but had come home for this election to help with the campaign in Ohio (even had a picture of them with Barack:D). They were Harvard grads who were former GOP, didn’t know the Obamas personally, but decided that they liked what they saw in Obama and that Blinky and Winky were frightening to say the least. They stated that they had received calls from their overseas friends even at 4:30 am this morning congratulating them and the US. Before that they stated that they could hardly say they were Americans without being insulted abroad. Overseas, before the announcement of Mooselips for vp candidate, they (as in people overseas) were already mocking her as Alaska’s Gov. It seems that people over there are more aware of our politics than Americans are here. They also stated that there was such dread by people overseas that we would actually elect M&P, that Blinky is thought of as a war monger. They stated that their friends were overjoyed that America overwhelmingly voted for Obama, because we were thought of before by the choices we had made with the current administration and not well to say the least. I guess what I am getting at is that the world just drew a huge sigh of relief and may start looking at us much more favorably in the future just because of this choice we have made.

  49. ralph the wonder llama says:

I see my feelings about this story are not unique. Until I saw this report, I thought McCain was simply a REpublican who wanted to be president and would smear his opponent to win.

Now I see he is so much worse. He KNEW Sarah Palin was ignorant and woefully unqualified for the position, his staff KNEW she didn’t have the knowledge base the position demanded, and they not only tried to convince us otherwise, they had the news media keep it embargoed until after the election.

    That is unconscionable.

That is taking an irresponsible risk with the security of this nation. McCain confirmed my worst fears of his character and cynicism.

I don’t know who it was…some Republican on tv (just heard it from the other room) who said that he thought McCain could now become the new “Lion of the Senate.” Excuse me? First of all, that’s what Ted Kennedy is called and he’s still alive. Secondly, after what we’ve just learned about Palin (which we probably always suspected, but didn’t know the whole story…and there’s probably LOTS more)…and he HAD to have known how completely unqualified she was…and he outright lied. That is not a man of honor or courage. He betrayed himself certainly. But worse, he was willing to betray this country. I respected McCain once upon a time, but I never will again.

  57. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Man, I knew it every time I saw Blinky and Winky together and Blinky was playing with his wedding band that his asking her to be his vp candidate had only to do with getting in her pants. Thanks Cameron, for showing America that Fox has no ethics, journalistic or otherwise.

Sitting on revelations that the potential vp is so ignorant of even basic geography, can only be termed obfuscation. It will be exhibit “a,” for a retooled Fairness Doctrine.

That’s where we need to push the administration. Rush would blow an artery, having to offer equal time for rebuttals.

A new doctrine, with the power of law behind it, would put Fox, and most of right-wing radio out of business in less than a year.

For future presidential candidates, I make the following recommendation:

If you don’t have the time, energy, or interest to fully vet your choice for running mate, you will save yourself a great deal of embarrassment if at the very least you give him/her a test to find out if he/she has at least a high-school level of knowledge in geography, U.S. history, world history, current events, basic economics, basic structure of the U.S. government, the U.S. constitution, and anything else that’s taught in high school civics.

Oh, and a command of the English language (especially pronunciation) would be helpful, too. It would spare the American public from “nucular”, “verbidge”, etc.

Losing Is Tough; Selling May Be Tougher
    By Catherine Rampell

Democrats, don’t put away the celebratory booze just yet. One of the world’s greatest opportunities for schadenfreude is about to present itself, as an exiting army of Republican foot soldiers tries to sell its Washington-area homes in the worst housing bust since the Great Depression.

Think about it: Many of today’s exiting Republican-appointed officials in Washington arrived near the height of the housing bubble, particularly those who came after George W. Bush was re-elected in 2004. Then, it must have seemed as if Republicans had a permanent stranglehold on Washington, and thus it must have also seemed like the appropriate time for conservative migrants to the capital to settle down and buy a home.

Many of these Republican officials nested in northern Virginia, a corner of what had long been a reliable red state. And what a time to buy in northern Virginia it was.

Like Miami and Las Vegas, northern Virginia was frantically built up during the housing bubble. Prices of single-family homes and condos skyrocketed. When I first lived in the area a couple of years ago, I remember hearing the curious term “Fairfaxed.” It referred to Fairfax County, Va., an overbuilt Washington suburb. Despite Fairfax’s perpetual gridlock, builders continued to plant residential high-rises around the county and beyond in anticipation that housing prices would climb ever higher. Residents in nearby Loudoun County lamented that their greatest fears were being realized: They were, after at least a decade of warnings, finally being “Fairfaxed.”

Fast-forward to today. Also like Miami and Las Vegas, northern Virginia’s housing market has cratered. The average housing price in the greater northern Virginia area in September declined 32.11 percent from the previous year, according to the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors.

And this is the market that many Republican officials, with few Washington job prospects during an Obama presidency, will have to sell in.

I thank my colleague Gardiner Harris for the pointer.

BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota health officials are recommending that pregnant women and young children avoid eating meat from wild game killed with lead bullets.

The recommendation is based on a study released Wednesday that examined the lead levels in the blood of more than 700 state residents. Those who ate wild game killed with lead bullets appeared to have higher lead levels than those who ate little or no wild game.

Sorry to use such a harsh example as that to illustrate the totally insane methodology behind the republican voter. They’ll vote for a complete imbecile so long as that imbecile looks right or pretends to be patriotic in a true, republican fashion. Substance counts for nothing. Improving, building, creating, all things to be disparaged as far left. Look at Minnesota. Those people reelected Michele Bachmann and Norm Coleman (for the time being). Bachmann is an empty person devoid of any competency to hold public office. Nothing but a shill for far right. Coleman just another big profits corporate facilitator. Al Franken has more intelligence, integrity and dignity than those two put together. And they’d have to be put together for multiple lifetimes to hope to equal him. But, for the life of me, I simply cannot understand how anyone could legitimize a vote for Bachmann. She isn’t just dumb, she is downright weird. Maybe she will rise to become a true republican and resign in the amidst of a scandal to “spend more time with her family.” Her district must be some sort of secret twisted religious cult. O.k. — I guess that’s not news to US, but to their viewers, this admission of being complicit in the coverup of the ignorance that IS Palin should open the eyes of at least some of their viewers that maybe, just maybe, fox cannot be trusted as a reliable news, since they cannot report on REAL NEWS that they have exclusively in their crusty little hands.

I suspect that all the media, print, TV and radio, had better insights into Palin than they were willing to divulge before the election. Witness the OMFG looks on Charlie Gibson’s and Katie Couric’s faces during their interviews.

  94. Nevar says:

Faux News will forever flog Palin as the only reason they lost.

  95. kpaul says:

I am certainly no fan of Sarah Palin, but this whole story smacks of dogpiling on the loser. It seems very implausible that anyone of average intelligence, who has completed 5th grade geography would know that Africa is a continent.

This is just another example of Fox News’ load of crap. If they can’t be trusted to be truthful on any other issue, why are they being listened to now? These jerks are just hedging their bets by attacking a person who least means to fight back. Sound familiar? Look away kids, look away.

  96. GrammieC says:

    shepard smith & carl cameron

    HYPOCRITS !

    You wimps !

cHEAP jOURNALISM except it does not qualify as journalism.

When we we hear all the mountains f behind the scene crap on oBama?

  97. avchavis says:

I do find this difficult to believe. Fox News (especially Sean Hannity) were fawning all over Palin and now they want to turn on her to expose all of her shortcomings. I mean, they were practically trying to shove this woman down our throats! McCain and Fox News should be ashamed of themselves. McCain should’ve known better!

  98. GrammieC says:

You all amke SO much of this trifle that Gov Palin missed ????

What about that the BHO you voted in to the Cheif Office can’t do the job at all. He can’t and will grossly fail his promises.

Know this OBAMA cannot tell the truth

Gov Sarah can tell the truth now which one do you think has the character to be President a child could tell you.

Choose Gov Sarah Palin, “mommy she tells us the truth!”

Peole make me laugh who cares if she slipped up on that no meaning question ???

Care more that BHO Cannot tell the truth!!!!!!!

  99. sarahfan says:

I am totally amazed at the comments on this decidedly slanted article. I am so glad that I am a conservative. I had to sign up for this website in order to be able to post this reply and it was a difficult thing for me. If this is how you all “think progress” we are all in for a BAD time over the next four years,oh, probably eight years because all the sheeple we be sure to re-elect BHO. All I can say is remember that old saying, “be careful what you wish for, you might just get it!”
I leave you to your ignorance and downright nastiness with joy. I’ll be sitting here enjoying the next four years and your disappointment when the great Obama can’t possibly deliver on all the outlandish promises he has made over the past two years.

  100. dbadass says:

Whatever. You know where the door is. Palin will be forgotten in no time so you might want to start looking for some other halfwit to convince yourself of.

  101. ralph the wonder llama says:

GrammieC shouldn’t be allowed near her computer when she’s under medication.

  102. ralph the wonder llama says:

Uh, sarahfan… we don’t expect Obama to deliver on ALL of his promises. No candidate ever does, or can.

But we are confident that he will chart a new course for the nation, one in which our economic footing can be regained and our international reputation can be restored after all the damage that conservative policies have done over the past eight years.

But thanks for your thoughts. My guess is that if you do enjoy the next four years, it will be because the nation becomes more prosperous and secure, with a government that no longer tells you to be afraid, and so you’ll have the luxury of focusing more on trivialities that will outrage you.

    Cheers.

  103. wicodemo says:

    ok ok
I think we need to back off on sarah palin for a bit. Couldn’t it be that the media is dramatizing their reports on her?. She is a very educated woman, after all she was chosen as McCain’s running mate for a reason.

Your sarcasm is very subtle, but it’s there.

[Your opinion] I am so glad that I am a conservative.[your opinion] I had to sign up for this website in order to be able to post this reply and it was a difficult thing for me.[Why?] If this is how you all “think progress” we are all in for a BAD time over the next four years,oh, probably eight years because all the sheeple we be sure to re-elect BHO. [more opine] All I can say is remember that old saying, “be careful what you wish for, you might just get it!” [Im not in the habit of wishing, thank you]
I leave you to your ignorance and downright nastiness with joy. [Opine] I’ll be sitting here enjoying the next four years and your disappointment when the great Obama can’t possibly deliver on all the outlandish promises he has made over the past two years. [Well, I dont think any politician has ever lived up to ALL of their promises]

Now, I have to ask what promises did Bush keep? A balanced budget? Smaller government? Less deficits? No Child Left Behind? Capturing Bin Laden? Less spending?

  106. Uncle Ho says:

I said all along that Caribou Barbie was dumber than a bag of shit, now insiders are spilling the beans that it is indeed true.

  107. Uncle Ho says:

By even nominating and not exposing this bimbo, McPutz, the GOP, and Faux news gave America a big F.U.

    Country 1st my ass!

  108. Uncle Ho says:

Xisithris says; What promises did Bush keep?

well, for one he IS a uniter, not a divider. After all, chimpy has 90% of us think that we are on the wrong track, has the LOWEST approval rating since such things were recorded, and has nearly the ENTIRE civilized and uncivilized world hating the USA.

  109. EugeneDebs says:

    GrammieC Says:

Nothing worth reading. Not only are you a moron Crammit. You are a LIAR. Show me an Obama lie. Now Caribou BIMBO lied over and over. She did NOT say no thanks to the bride to nowhere, Obama did NOT pal around with terrorists. The Alaska legislative report did NOT exonerate her. She lies like a Bushy and YOU are just bone ignorant
