In a new 50,000 word article on the presidential campaigns that will come out tomorrow, Newsweek reports that Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) spent far more on clothing than the $150,000 reported last month. According to a preview by Politico’s Mike Allen, “McCain’s top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy“:
One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family — clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent ‘tens of thousands’ more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband.
Newsweek reports that McCain “rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign, and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended.”
To be fair, a lot of that money went for lipstick for the pig.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:33 amWell, freeloading is a thing Republicans love to do. Their beloved concept of Social Darwinism makes they think that, if they don’t profit from those they see as “suckers”, they’re not “good capitalists”.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:33 amAnd I thought the dems were the tax and spend crowd !
How would Palin handle a budget ?
November 5th, 2008 at 11:33 amCan we just ignore this hockey mom now? Please?
November 5th, 2008 at 11:33 amAs my mother, a born again Catholic Republican and a zombified Faux News supporter, has said…
Why is the damn liberal media treating her so mercilessly?
Well, here may be an answer. Nearly $200,000 on clothes.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:34 am…and who was purported to be the “elitist”?

I’m sorry, but how do those clothing purchases not count as a campaign contribution, well in excess of the $2300 limits?
November 5th, 2008 at 11:35 amMcCain “rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign…”
Or before picking her to be his VP running mate for that matter.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:36 amPalin spent more on clothes than previously reported, McCain aides furious at her ‘outrageous profligacy.’»
– – Not even a decent interval. And so, the blame game begins.

I agree. Let Alaska deal with her. Stop giving her air time.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:37 amI’m sure the moose will be impressed by the fancy wardrobe. High fillutin’, fancy shootin’. Good ridance to bad rubbish.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:38 amYeah sure mooseyak kept mcchimpy in the dark, just like the economy did, just like foreign policy, just like basic commonsense did…
Please go way way away
November 5th, 2008 at 11:38 amJoe the unlicensed tax dodging plumber just had his fifteen minutes expire. Let’s do the same for this inane product of the corrupt Alaskan political system. Send her home and let the polar bears and moose hunters deal with her clothing bills.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:40 amNo one should be reimbursed from McCain’s campaign funds. Since he took federal matching funds, the taxpayer would be on the hook for half.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:41 amCan you folks at least TRY to kill a thread by ignoring it someday?
Like my best friend who seems to always have trouble with ex-girlfriends, my advice is to turn your back, walk away, and never, EVER look back…
If you’re truly sick of her, ignore her, and TP will stop posting topics on the stupid beotch.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:43 amPalin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards.
The Republican version of socialism.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:44 amaides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended
You mean “be offended”, as in “have called her a *un*”.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:44 amAnd you can be sure of what kind of President she would have been, far worse than Bush and twice as dishonest.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:45 amCan we please just dump Palin? It is time to let her fade into obscurity and stop bothering us with her nonsense.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:47 amDon’t be too hard on Sarah: it wasn’t easy for her to keep up with Cindy.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:47 amI’m hoping the public’s enjoyment of Tina Fey’s impersonation of Palin makes her think twice about throwing herself into the national spotlight again. If Palin won’t go away, Tina Fey will be there to remind us why she should.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:47 amFortunately, this is an issue we won’t have to hear about anymore (although if I was a Republican who had donated money to this team, I would still be plenty ticked off at how my money was spent).
I would just like to say this: I hope that all the Republicans who complained about John Edwards getting a $400 haircut on campaign funds (even though Edwards later reimbursed the campaign for his haircut out of his own pocket) are complaining just as long and just as loud about outfitting the Palin family on campaign money. But I’m not holding my breath.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:49 am“What? How long has she been at this, five weeks?”
No, this grift has been at this a lot longer than you’d think.
She is absolutely disgusting.
Palin 2012!
November 5th, 2008 at 11:51 amPalin who?
November 5th, 2008 at 11:53 amDear Caribou Barbie;
You said you will donate the clothes and accessories would be donated to charity after the campaign.

November 5th, 2008 at 11:55 amRead the whole article. If she didn’t disgust you before, she will now.
My favorite part was where she is so “comfortable with the boys club” that she literally parades around her room in nothing but a tiny hotel towel wrapped around her, right in front of McCain’s top advisers, and her poor, cuckold of a husband, all just sitting there on the couch.
I bet their jaws were dropped in amazement at just how crass and bizarre a person this was who was potentially a heartbeat away from the presidency.
I hope Todd divorces her, takes the lake house and the kids, and she has to put all those clothes on sale at her “favorite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska” in order to reimburse the McCain campaign and pay for gas in her truck.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:55 ami’m hoping the next time she goes out on one of her wolf-shooting adventures, mccain is piloting the aircraft.
November 5th, 2008 at 11:56 amMan,what a piece of work this woman turned out to be. Holy crap.
And the RNC is concered with the fact that Obama went to home to see his dying grandmother? Sheesh, these people need to get their priorities in order.

The Way mooseyak handles the tough Alaskan Budget (5 year forecast.):
She takes a legal size 6 column accounting tablet and doodles crowns, dead wolves, various number “1s” encasted in an explosions and sizzling mooseburgers on an open pit.
Then she makes sure she collects her per diem.
BTW
mooseyak had a nerve to cry, as if her bs was working on the public. HAHAHAHAHAHA
Because of all the terrible personal bs tantrum she spewed through her own lipstick pig lip, she should go the way of her buddy, stevens.
Amazing the whole time repugs were believing in their own bs. And, and laying it on thicker than a granite kitchen sink. Simply Amazing.

HOW IS TED STEVENS WINNING HIS DAMN BATTLE FOR REELECTION?!?!
It speaks volumes about an electorate that sends an 84yr old multiple felon back to the United States Senate.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:09 pmUntil she is out of American politics all together there is no good reason to ignore her. She lept gleefully into the national arena, and has been deservedly mocked. She deserves scrutiny until all potential charges are concluded and until she is no longer involved in politics.
Fact is, at this moment, she is not going away to fade into obscurity: she is returning to being a governor of an American state, and clearly has further political aspirations. SHE (and others) do not consider this election the end of her carreer — some see it as the START of her real political carrer.
So, no. No, I do not want to ignore this lunatic in office.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:10 pmNot sure that’s even possible, Buckie, but I take your point…
November 5th, 2008 at 12:10 pmmy favorite palin fun fact:
Results for Guilford County, where Sarah Palin made her remarks about real Americans in pro-America parts of the country:
Obama/Biden 58.75%
McCain/Palin 40.44%
Obama’s margin in NC is now 11,690, up from 11,246 when the first unofficial results were announced in the wee hours of this morning; the total vote has moved up to 4,248,285.

November 5th, 2008 at 12:10 pm“Can we just ignore this hockey mom now? Please?”
No, unfortunately.
This becomes just one of many teachable moments that progressives in power will need to take advantage of in the coming months.
Every time a new progressive policy is developed, the Obama administration will need to have the appropriate references back to the dark days of bush/cheney/delay/et al that explicate why the policy is needed, and point to specific examples of the over-reaching and “monstrous” (per Krugman) actions of the republicans and the bush administration that necessitated them.
Obama must begin the careful unwinding of all the awful policies put in place over the last 8 years by the republican crooks, and make sure he gets the republicans involved in the unwinding process, even to the point where they cop to the awfulness that they helped create. Not to rub their faces in it, but to point out to and remind them and the American people that what bush and his cronies did to this country was not in the country’s best interest.
There needs to be an acknowledgement and repudiation on the part of the republicans so the country doesn’t go through this crap again.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:16 pmBest part of the NEWSWEEK story?

I don’t believe Alaskans are sending an 84 year old multiple felon back to the Senate. Even those with all the acuity of a bowling ball know that Stevens is out — either through resignation or expulsion.
What they voted for was for keeping the Senate seat red (to be filled with a Republican to be named later). The only way this could happen was by voting for Stevens, which will force a special election in the wake of his resignation.
What will be interesting is that the candidates in the special election would both be newbies, and the seniority that kept Stevens in power for so long will no longer be an issue. Would Begich run again? Or will the loss of Stevens send a flock of other Dems to the plate? It should be interesting.

Funny thing is, that would be absolutely true. She would make record amounts of money in that big money industry (and all those “family values” types would be the first to buy the films). Still not sure that I’d want to see that myself, though.

My concern is that Bible Spice is going to end up running and winning that seat ……………That might very well be even worse.
The argument I’ve heard is that most Alaskans don’t sincerely believe Stevens will be ejected from the Senate if he wins. They voted for him because of his decades of service…
Assuming he wins and gets his geriatric, felonious ass thrown out, don’t expect Palin to step up. She’ll likely push for her Lt., Sean Parnell in the special election.
Which is nearly as bad for the country. Parnell is a few years older than Palin and about as conservative, if a bit more politically astute…and should have few problems against a challenger like Begich. Reason and enlightenment fail the people of Alaska yet again.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:41 pmImportant safety tip: don’t invite the Palins to dinner, unless your silverware is insured and your best china glued to the wall. Jeezus.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:41 pmI don’t know, I think it would be kind of fun to see her exposed in the Republican primaries. All those guys who said how capable she is, like Mutt, would be able to tell her how they really feel. And here supporters would probably lose their inspiration to vote for the eventual GOP candidate.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:41 pmAn addendum to my last post: between Stevens, Parnell, Palin, and Begich…Begich is the only one born in Alaska. Have these people no pride in their native sons?
November 5th, 2008 at 1:43 pmQuick math check/reality check:
Nominated: August 29
Defeated: November 4
Elapsed Days: 68
Estimate on cost of clothing: $150,000 (probably higher)
Cost of clothing expenditures PER DAY: $2,205.88
Three thoughts:
November 5th, 2008 at 2:08 pm1) Don’t tell me what a cost conscience budget-cutter she is after this
2) The campaign obviously lied about this or had no clue as to what she was doing – either way, it is bad
3) I thought the Palin’s would all have looked better after spending than kind of money of clothes
77. Tired of Being Lied To,
As you imply, the way she spent the money off a “private donor” and multiple Aides’ credit cards seems odd.
Should I infer that this was an intentional move to bypass any accounting controls ?

November 5th, 2008 at 4:10 pmDid she donate those clothes before she went back to Alaska? Did Todd? The kids? Did her daughter part with the Louis Vitton purse before she got on the plane? No. Didn’t think so. Have I mentioned that I detest this woman and find her, and those like her, offensive?
November 5th, 2008 at 11:06 pm…after reading an article about how Gov. Palin charged the state of Alaska to have members of her family travel to (Alaska) state functions, whether they were invited or not,
and now the comments/articles coming out about the cost of Gov. Palin’s and her husband wardrobe (during the 2008 Presidential Campaign), do not surprise me.
I think anyone voted into a position of power will always find ways to spend voters tax dollars to benefit themselves, and family, and not think anything of it; a characteristic needed for wanting to be in politics (thinking you are better than anyone else and don’t have to answer to anyone).
Back to the Alaska expenditures; what does it say about someone’s character, when you ask your staff to go back and change comments (not dollars)on expense reports, about the nature/purpose of family members attending (Alaska) state functions, when the family member(s) did not perform any function at all, and in some cases not invited. (Change may not have been made if it were not for some (hi-profile) event that might have triggered an audit…?)
Yes, it could be said that some invitations did not specifically indicate who was invited, but to have some organiziers send (either on their own or suggested to do so) updated invitations or send personal email invitations to help submitted expenditures match invitations…..?
And, it could be said that Alaska’s laws and/or the Governor’s expenditures discretion are such that it may be difficult to say that the (documented) expenses are valid or not. Then again, who is going to stand up to a Governor ?
In my opinion, children and/or family members (not working for the state) of a Governor (or other elected office) are not on the state payroll, so unless an organizer or donor is willing to pay for their expenses, the Governor should pay the expenses out right or reimburse the state (if charged to state charge cards/expense accounts). If my company pays to send me to a seminar and I want to take my wife, the company does not pay for my wife’s expenses and I would not expect them to.
Seems that there are those that will use every angle they can to get what they want, and do what ever it takes to make it look like that every action they make was not improper; maybe not using good judgement….
Just my thoughts on the matter.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:50 amI can’t believe the people here who are begging the rest of us to turn a blind eye to this, to forget Palin, to “ignore” any thread about her. I want everything about the Palins brought out. The last thing I want is for Sarah Palin’s prayers to be answered regarding the country (and her state!) finding out who, and what, she really is. I want her devotees to know ALL. Who are you people pretending we should “ignore her now,” when obviously, to “ignore her now” is the way to keep her image untarnished. YOU go away! After what she put us through, I want her run through the wringer, if she deserves it, and it seems she does, a thousand times more than we even guessed! It must come out. Quit protecting these republican criminals by acting as if “talking about murder” is worse than committing murder, gosh damn it! Enough with that.
