Barack Obama’s election as America’s 44th president has “unleashed a renewed love for the United States after years of dwindling goodwill.” Reaction from around the world has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing “amazement and satisfaction that the United States could overcome centuries of racial strife and elect an African-American as president.” Indeed, one British newspaper echoed a famous phase from the 1960s, describing Obama’s election as “one giant leap for mankind.”
Leaders around the world have also expressed optimism about future relations with President Obama and the United States. European Union officials hailed Obama’s victory “as an opportunity to renew a tenuous trans-Atlantic relationship and join forces in ‘a new deal for a new world’” while Asian leaders “vowed to work with the new Democratic White House after eight years of Republican rule under George W. Bush.” Many of the world’s Presidents and Prime Ministers offered praise for Obama and the future:
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown: “I know that the values we share in common and the policies we work on together will enable us, these two countries, to come through these difficult economic times and build a safer and more secure society for the future.”
Spanish PM José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero: Obama’s victory opens “a new era of hope” for America. “This is a triumph which brings hope and confidence for a world which is experiencing moments of difficulty and uncertainty.”
Australian PM Kevin Rudd: “Today what America has done is turn [Martin Luther King's] dream into a reality.”
French President Nicolas Sarkozy: “At a time when all of us must face huge challenges together, [Obama's] election raises great hope in France, in Europe and elsewhere in the world.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel: Obama’s election is “historic.” The German government “is fully aware of the importance and of the worth of our transatlantic partnership.”
Former South African President Nelson Mandela: “Your victory has demonstrated that no person anywhere in the world should not dare to dream of wanting to change the world for a better place.”
While Israeli and Palestinian leaders voiced hopes that Obama would speed up the slow moving Middle East peace process, the Russians offered a unique reaction to the U.S. presidential election:
President Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday that Russia will deploy missiles in territory near NATO member Poland in response to U.S. missile defense plans. He did not say whether the short-range Iskander missiles would be fitted with nuclear warheads. [...]
He said he hoped Barack Obama would act to improve relations with Russia but he did not offer congratulations to the president-elect.
Indeed, former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin noted that Obama’s biggest challenge would be managing a punishing agenda of various crises in the U.S. and around the world. “He will need to fight on every front,” he said.
CAMERON: Can I also join the Prime Minister in congratulating Barack Obama on his stunning victory in American elections. ... This is a really important moment, to gone from the horror of segregation to the election of a black president in just four decades is an incredible transformation. And it shows that the United States is a beacon of hope and opportunity and change.
He's the right man for the job. And it's a helluva big job.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:13 pmThis must be torture for those poor Republicans.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:14 pmWhere is Daryll? Maybe he's having a chat with God about the poor communication link.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:15 pmBecause we are on the way to rebuilding goodwill and strengthening our global alliances, I feel safer in one regard: if, not when, we are subject to an act of terrorism, at least I believe the majority of the world will stand with us again, like they did after 9/11.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:17 pmThe only path this planet has to move forward is eliminating racism. Today we're just beginning that long walk.
The fact most of the World supports Obama is profound, not only to put racism behind us, but to move forward on the important issues threatening us all.
It's a new day today; let's all do our part in making it history's best chapter to date.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:19 pmTranslation - Thanks for not electing an Unstable War Monger who was hell bent on destroying the world.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:20 pmI think Angela Merkel is mostly happy that the President of the US will no longer be giving her inappropriate shoulder rubs.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:21 pmIt is nice that the world is pleased. I hope it means a new beginning. I am overjoyed for my country. We can move on a new path, with a new leader. God bless us all.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:26 pmNow that Barack Obama is going to be our next president, all I can say is now we can get on with the 21st Century. Under Bush, it seemed we were stuck, aka no forward momentum!
November 5th, 2008 at 2:28 pmNow hopefully America can regain its position at the top of the world and our empire really isn't over.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:30 pmI have said on more than one occasion that this country will never elect a black president. I am so proud to admit I'm wrong.

I don't want to have the USA be an empire on top of the world. I want the rest of the world to be side by side and shoulder to shoulder with us. Equal and not less.

Dude, that ship has sailed...
You shouldn't be on top, as rulers; you should be in front, as leaders.
The problem with the USA wanting to be on top of the world, is that the rest of the world will see "your asses".

Out of curiosity, what was the world's reaction to our election in 2000, and especially 2004?
I mean, besides the abundance of laughter?
November 5th, 2008 at 2:39 pm"Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

I never thought that way. I was raised to see the content of a person's character, not the color of their skin and that is how my children have been raised. Still I am proud to see the rest of the country moving beyond color and looking at character again.

Ridicule
And a run on suppositories............No pun intended
November 5th, 2008 at 2:40 pmAfter Obama won I went to the British newspapers to see their
reaction and my favorite comment was:
Sometimes I wish I was an American, in those moments where they seem to stand apart from us. Their endless optimism and their endless desire for change and movement and history. They make history, where as as an English woman I feel I am just you know in it. I don't know that much about life, or what it takes to be a successful adult because well I am just a student, full of that optimism and promise and you know I like to watch Jeremy Kyle. I sat up and watched Obama become the 44th American President, I watched Americans cry and I cried and I believed in him and his words and the fact that really, this is going to have an impact on us all and to say that we are not involved is really fruitless.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:41 pmSometimes I wish I was an American just so I could be proud and wave a flag and not feel like a loser. I wish that I could hold my flag and say you know what, I want my country to be amazing and I believe we are in many more ways that you will never ever understand and most of all I am proud to be English, I am proud to be British.
But I cannot, not just yet, but maybe one day. We will chant, Yes we can. and I will teach my children to believe that they can do anything and be anything and more over that we are all safe tonight. And we will live to a dream that those Yanks make seem a little less fluffy and at times like these very real.
And Obama, not as an American, not as a British Woman but as a Human has given me that, I fly my human flag and for this moment, live in hope.
Thank you America, and I wish us all a happy and optimistic future!
DRxJ Says:
Out of curiosity, what was the world’s reaction to our election in 2000, and especially 2004?
Here in Mexico, we were happy in 2000 because, "Hey! Bush has family in Mexico, we'll surely get a good deal out of this".
We were wrong, of course.
In 2004 it was more a case of: "Oh, no. Oh, no, not again. He can't win again, surely. What? No, no, NO NO NO! ARGHHH! Stupid Florida judges!". (Lots of Palm-in-face, or in some cases, Head-to-desk, followed)
November 5th, 2008 at 2:43 pmDr. Hussein Matt:
I missed you on a previous thread I think, so I'm asking again.
Forgive me if this sounds weird and you have no idea what I'm talking about...but does the phrase "Who-teegee" mean anything to you?
November 5th, 2008 at 2:47 pmBush has damaged relations with Russia to an appalling extent, bringing us actually to the brink of warfare. It's the republican inability to succeed in the world without creating new enemies, new sources of fear. It's going to take time but we can fix this too. There is NO reason why our two countries cannot get along. I'm going to hold my tongue on Medvedev's statement, other than say A NEW DAY IS HERE, JUST WAIT.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:48 pmYeah, I saw it....no, it doesn't, sorry. Were you thinking I'm someone else?
November 5th, 2008 at 2:49 pmI was raised much the same way. However, after living on each coast, the north, and the south, I was sadden to see over my 37 yrs of life such wide spread racism. I'm glad 52% of the voting electorate saw past race.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:49 pmHow impossibly ironic that so much of the world can see, so very clearly, what this election means. We, The People, have clearly spoken. Hope, not fear is what drives us. Vision, not cowering, is ours, and we've reached out and reclaimed it. With a Statesman to lead us, we're trying, once again.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:52 pmFor the wretched of the earth, there is a flame that never dies. Even the darkest night will end, and the sun will rise.
(From Les Miserables)
Dr. Hussein Matt:
Ok, no worries then. I have a friend, who is well, not yet a Dr. but will be fairly soon, is very progressive, just passionate enough about it to post on TP, named Matt...etc etc. Recently you made a few comments (that I can't remember to point out) that sounded almost exactly like something he would say, and how he would say it. I was trying to coyly see if you were him, because that would be hilarious since you and I have been around here a while, and he lives 4 blocks from me haha.
Anyway, we now return to your regularly scheduled programming of RaptureReady being a twat.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:54 pmHey it's RaptureReady, aka Daryll, maybe our first troll of the day!

November 5th, 2008 at 2:55 pm@RaptureReady: So you're saying Obama is responsible for the 404 error I get when I click on that link of yours?
That's a new one..
November 5th, 2008 at 2:57 pmHey Daryll there is nothing to see on the link you gave to CNN. I suppose that's just another one of those communications Satan sent to you pretending to be Jesus Christ. Kind of like his message to you about President Elect Huckabee and how McCain/Palin were going to win big yesterday. That Satan, he sure delights in messing with you.

I dunno about you, but I kind of like America where it is in the temperate zone. We've got arable land, a hospitable climate, and a decent change of seasons. The top of the world is nothing but ice.
Well, half the year, anyhow. During the summer it's ice water and drowning polar bears.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:58 pmCare to post a link that works?
If the market had dropped after a McCain victory, I wonder if you would blame it on him...nah, of course not. It's never the Republican's fault.
Also funny is that every newspaper headline I saw on my way to work this morning showed the market going up after Obama's win...
And finally, one day's worth of market fluctuation (although since your link didn't work I don't really know what you were trying to post, so I admit that freely) is hardly an indicator of a trend. The Dow has been up and down all over the place these last few weeks.
I notice that when it started it wasn't Bushes fault, oh no, but since we elected Obama the fluctuations are now his fault?
You are ridiculous.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:58 pmOn fixing the URL.. I am really even less impressed than I was at the 404.

November 5th, 2008 at 3:03 pmHey RaptureReady, what do you think about "God's plan" including a President-elect Obama?
Hey RaptureReady, what do you think about "God's plan" including a strengthened Democratic Majority in both houses?
Hey RaptureReady, what do you think about "God's plan" including YOU being HORRIBLY, HORRIBLY wrong on EVERY prediction I have seen you make since this election started?
If it seems like God hates you, it's because...well...I'm an atheist so I don't even think he exists.
From my viewpoint, if it feels like God hates you it's because you are delusional and have an inferiority complex.
Looked at from the viewpoint of someone who does believe in God, if it seems like he hates you it's because you pi$$ him off so much with all your BS that he has to continually b___slap you to try and wake you up.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:03 pmDaryll says:

November 5th, 2008 at 3:04 pmI was in the Russian Embassy today working on some paperwork with my wife, and they had Russian news on the television. The blurb about Russia is not correct. President Dmitry Medvedev did offer congratulations to the president-elect in a speech he was giving. While his congratulations was not overly enthusiastic, he did note that the election of Obama offers the opportunity to improve relations with Russia.

Hey Daryll, don't you need to work on your resume now that your going to lose that job where you leech off the taxpayer's dollar for that fatcat military industrial complex that pays you to spread propaganda instead of doing any actual work.
Maybe you should practice saying, "Do you want fries with that and is that for here or to go."

Typical childish rightwing punk. Unless we get our way we will throw a tantrum and hold our breath. Go ahead. Stand in the way of the change America wants. I would LOVE to see you morons go the way of the Whig party and the voters will see what you are doing. Actually even the Republicans arent as ignorant as you so they probably wont do anything that stupid
November 5th, 2008 at 3:08 pmYou'll what? You'll FILIBUSTER? You mean that procedure your party wanted to eliminate with the Nuclear Option when the Dem's were the minority? You people are TOO MUCH really. You whine and complain that the Dem's are blocking your stuff and threaten to take away the only power the minority party has in Congress...and then when it comes your turn you threaten to ABUSE that very same procedure...really...
Go ahead. PLEASE. PLEASE actually filibuster every bill that the Democratic Majority comes up with. That way the people of this country can see the Republican party for what they TRULY are. Obstructionists, liars, obfuscators, spoiled brats, sore losers, selfish, unwilling to compromise, and just in general f__king USELESS.
Once done the Dem majority will be even STRONGER come 2010, big guy, and we will all thank you for that.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:08 pmHey Rapture ready: did you vote for McCain because he represented the republican party? If so, your partisan (read "party first") vote was completely sad. Did you vote for Palin because she was a "hottie"? If so, your (sexist) vote was completely sad.
Either way, your vote was completely in vain.

2) He has inspired people in this country like never before (hence the ENORMOUS voter turnout)
3) Unlike McCain he has the proper calm temperament to help lead this country through the crises it now faces
4) He had the foresight to say the Iraq War was a bad idea BEFORE it started
5) He ran a respectful and POSITIVE campaign, which is something people haven't seen in quite some time
6) His policies are simply better than McCain's
His being black and having the middle name Hussein are simply the Icing and Sprinkles on our Inaugural Cake that we will gorge on while LAUGHING OUR A$$E$ OFF AT BIGOTED MORONS LIKE YOU.

November 5th, 2008 at 3:24 pmand down $5 today that's a $2 net increase.
It's kind of funny the price of oil has dropped so much
without us increasing supply, What happened to the
"drill baby drill" crap?
Yeah, but we know you're not inferior because of the color of your skin. You'd be inferior not matter what color you were.
The State of Hawaii has already verified his birth certificate, you really need to stop believing Rush. In addition, his mother was born in Kansas. Go to the State Department website and you'll see that even if she'd given birth to him overseas he'd still be considered a citizen.
Really Daryll, everybody has a right to be ignorant but you abuse the privilege.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:25 pmHm. I wonder when any of the Democracies in Europe will elect a non-white head of state. Plenty of ethnic minorities in France, Germany, England...wonder how long until their attitude toward race is as advanced as the US.
Man, that is a weird sentence to type...
November 5th, 2008 at 3:26 pmHey Daryll,
Are all the members of your church as upset as you are about Obama's great win?

Darryl will forever be in a tizzy.
Mission accomplished.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:28 pmIt's ALL crap anyway.
They CLAIM that the cost of doing business has gone up, so they simply pass that on to the consumer in a price increase.
This would make sense and be perfectly fine except...
Oil companies repeatedly in the last few years post RECORD-BREAKING PROFITS AT THE SAME TIME THAT the cost of gas to the consumer skyrockets.
If the cost of doing business goes up, and you raise prices to compensate, your profit margin REMAINS MORE OR LESS THE SAME, IT DOES NOT GO UP TO RECORD-BREAKING HEIGHTS.
We are being GOUGED, folks, plain and simple.
People are driving less because of the high cost of gas, which hurts Oil company profits...and...WHAT DO YOU KNOW! The price starts going down...
November 5th, 2008 at 3:28 pmYou’d be inferior not matter what color you were.
That's gonna leave a mark...
November 5th, 2008 at 3:30 pmRR, you're beyond retarded. Deranged is more apropos.
"Bums" receiving a decline in their taxes? People who don't work, paying more taxes? WTF are you talking about stupid?
And I think we know the real reason why your son was crying.
I'd be crying too if I had to live with such a moronic, idiotic, waste of human space such as yourself.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:32 pmThe world is just as thrilled as us to be getting rid of the neocon agenda and nation building ideology that we have been living under for the last eight years. They realize that America can again be the beacon of hope. It will jsut take a little time to clean up the mess left behind.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:32 pmcRaptureReady says (forgetting he's not bitblt and referring to himself in the third person):
No tizzy, he’ll fall on his face. Even my nephew was mad and tearful because he knows that bums (People that do not work) will be allowed to receive a decline in their taxes.
This is in response to "Darryl will be forever in a tizzy".
Parodyll, how did your church react to the election. And are you telling me the majority of your congregation voted McSame?
November 5th, 2008 at 3:33 pmDid I read that right, Darryl?
I'm removing the parentheses for emphasis, YOUR WORDS:
"People that do not work will be allowed to receive a decline in their taxes."
Seriously?
Are you really this fu(king stupid?
WHAT TAXES???? IF THEY DON'T WORK, WHAT TAXES ARE THEY GOING TO RECEIVE A DECLINE IN????
November 5th, 2008 at 3:33 pmOh wait, you don't have a son.
You prefer fcuking whores instead of your wife.
Gotcha...
November 5th, 2008 at 3:33 pmWhy is Daryll on a thread that is not related to teh gay?
November 5th, 2008 at 3:33 pmDarryl: Posterboy for the GOP base - stupid and loving every minute of it.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:34 pmWell, then "RaptureReadyForSomethingThatWontHappen", your nephew is an idiot if he believes that people who don't work "will be allowed to receive a decline in their taxes." He clearly is too dumb to understand how our system of taxation works. How old is he, five?
November 5th, 2008 at 3:35 pmcRaptureReady defines bums as people that do not work.
cRaptureReady forgets that it's Bush's policies that have created so many "bums".
DRxJ does not know what a decline in taxes is.
DRxJ does understand decrease in regards to taxes, but not decline.
FCK IT!
November 5th, 2008 at 3:36 pmDRxJ is in too good of a mood to continue to play whack-a-troll with the stupidity of Parodyll.
RaptureReady Says:
Don’t bet on it. A number of countries in the continent of Europe are extremely racist.
Oh, that is just it, I am NOT betting on it. But our reputation over there is that we are a country full of bigots. To which we can now collectively say: How many non-White heads of State have there been elected in Europe? Answer: Zero.
It just feels weird to have the tables turned so dramatically...
November 5th, 2008 at 3:36 pmDaryll forgets to inform us correcty as usual, that the numbers for the loss of jobs for October was 157,000. That's why the market is falling today.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:37 pmIt's ok, Darryl, all you need to do is explain to your nephew that it's GOD's PLAN that Obama be President! Remember?
November 5th, 2008 at 3:37 pmNot when they see that you said Obama isn't your President. Your leader is Mitch McConnell, ahahaha. Have you ever been up in the hills of Kentucky? Why don't we take a little field trip together and you'll see how happy those folks would be to see you. You can tell them all about that IT contract.
By the by, most of those Republicans in Kentucky get welfare checks and they're ... wait for it ... WHITE. But they're not as dumb as you and they remember that it was Clinton who put a 2 year limit on welfare benefits while the Republicans just keep sending them out.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:37 pmRaptureReadyWithHisKYJelly,
Are you referring to income taxes? Because adults in this country know that income taxes are not the only taxes we pay.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:39 pmDaryll, since when did people who are on welfare begin to pay taxes?
November 5th, 2008 at 3:39 pmShayne! SHHHHHH! You know facts have a liberal bias.
Now you done gone made Parodyll's itty bitty brain implode.
He don't have many capable neurons available, dontcha know.
You betcha!
November 5th, 2008 at 3:40 pmDarryl, you just inspired me. You have inspired this staunch atheist to PRAY for the first time ever.
I am going to PRAY to your Supernatural Security Blanket in the Sky that the following happen:
1) You lose your job through no fault of your own
2) You lose your home due to losing your job
3) Your efforts to correct 1 & 2 result in you acquiring massive, crushing debts
4) Your efforts to find a new job are completely fruitless
5) Your only available course of action at the end is to go on WELFARE
If your god exists, I'm sure he will grant this request of mine since you, as his supposed servant, need a SERIOUS LESSON in HUMILITY, COMPASSION, DESPERATION, and POVERTY.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:41 pmRupteredRectal your false god lied to you just to make an ass of you, fun, eh?
Obama won, you are a loser...as Nelson Munze says: "HA-HA!"
November 5th, 2008 at 3:42 pmOK Einstein, explain to us how people who don't work will receive a "decline" in their taxes. We'll wait.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:42 pm"The Borgen Project has some good info on the cost of addressing global poverty.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:42 pm$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.
$540 billion: Annual U.S. Defense Budget."
So you think that everyone receiving a welfare check is a "bum"? Wow, from what fantasy world did your space ship depart?
Because, you originally referred to "People who do not work", and now you changed what you meant and accused me of having comprehension difficulties. I admit, I do have problems comprehending the deranged ravings of a mind like yours. I think the truth is closer to the idea that you don't know what the hell you're talking about. Never did. Never will.
I'm done with you. I am too happy to waste more of my time arguing with someone who does not know how to form a coherent thought.

RuptureReady Hey your boy "Joe the non-plumber" admitted his
November 5th, 2008 at 3:49 pmfamily was on welfare when he was a kid. Why do you hate Joe?
This represents the fundamental difference between the neocons and progressives when it comes to how we spend our tax dollars.
To a neocon, if even ONE welfare queen actually exists, the those who legitimately benefit from Welfare and aren't cheats should suffer just so one freeloader doesn't profit.
To me, and most if not all progressives I suspect, it is worth the cost of coddling 10 freeloaders so that one deserving person is fed rather than starves, is clothed rather than naked, is housed rather than homeless, is medically cared for rather than dies needlessly.
I GLADLY PAY MY TAXES AND GLADLY ACCEPT THEM BEING SPENT BY MY GOVERNMENT TO HELP OTHERS. SHOULD I EVER NEED THAT HELP MYSELF, I KNOW IT IS THERE.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:50 pmIn the old days, and by that I mean before Republican rule, sales tax used to be an exemption on personal income tax. But it no longer is. But Daryll the Rocket Scientist, even back then you still had to PAY income taxes to get the exemption and welfare recipients still wouldn't get more money even if that exemption still existed which IT DOES NOT.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:50 pm"As long as I put Jesus first"
But, RR, I thought that Mitch McConnell was your new leader?
November 5th, 2008 at 3:51 pmReally? Then why are you crying about your big losses in the market?
November 5th, 2008 at 3:52 pmWhy is it that I, an atheist, always have to correct your misconceptions about God?
Only GOD is infallible, Darryl. You are (I'm being generous here) HUMAN, therefore you are fallible, therefore you WILL inevitably fail at some point.
This is what we call HUBRIS, Darryl. Or to put it in Christian terms it is the Deadly Sin of PRIDE.
Oh and by the way, putting Jesus first means following his teachings dumba$$. Jesus would approve of welfare, Jesus was a socialist, a pacifist, an egalitarian, and DEFINITELY a liberal.
How does that make you feel?
November 5th, 2008 at 3:53 pmSeeing how long you'll be burning in hell Darryl, you might want to polish up on your "deep-throating" skills...

Personally, I want nothing to do with this sort of hatred anymore.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:54 pmSo you never considered the possibility that maybe she was MARRIED and her husband LEFT her, or DIED, or is IN A COMA and the medical bills (or funeral costs) bankrupted her...and since he was the breadwinner at the time she now has to get two jobs plus help from the gov just to stay above water?
Of course you didn't. Everything either fits into your narrow little narrative/worldview or it doesn't exist. Just like a good brainwashed zealot.

November 5th, 2008 at 4:09 pmUm, interesting to know that all single mothers are, in fact, single mothers because they had premarital sex.
I'll have to ask a friend of mine about that. After discovering an STD she contracted from her adulterous born-again Christian husband, and after he informed her via cell phone that he wouldn't be coming home again, and after finding that he had successfully hidden all the family fortune offshore, she became a single mother because of premarital sex?
Wow. Just wow. God, if you're online today, please feel free to rapture Daryl any time now.

Indeed.

Let’s ask, “How did she get to be a single mother?” Artificial Insemination? Not likely.
How will the future single mothers get to be that way?
Irresponsible men!
(You can condemn irresponsible men all you want, DRxJ.)
Doesn’t it make more sense to try to prevent the emotional deserts in which single mother’s have to exist?
Doesn’t it make more sense to try to prevent fatherless families even if we, the government of the U.S., has to teach morality from the Bible?
cause http://www.charactercounts.com just doesn’t get it done.
How long can any country support the needs of the largest group of poverty ridden citizens – single women with children, when more and more are added to the group?
How long can any country adequately support the training and emotional needs of children who have no fathers?
Single women with children are the largest poverty group in the country.
This is what happens when moral teaching becomes optional.

November 5th, 2008 at 4:23 pmYour grasp of economics is minuscule. Oil prices at the well head are decreasing because OPEC countries have invested in America. Their investment loses are so high that they exceed what they could make in profits in ten or fifteen years even if the higher oil prices had been maintained. The OPEC response is benefiting most Americans as most Americans are not investors, except in managed funds (Pensions, CDs, Money Market and IRAs). This is the way worldwide markets function. OPEC overstepped its self-interests. The majority will thus benefit.

November 5th, 2008 at 4:34 pmSounds like BB and RR were both raised by single moms and have HUGE issues with men abandoning their families.
They both cling to religion to fill the empty void of not knowing their own fathers and to deal with the animosity created from extreme loneliness.
They come here to vent and attempt to heal the real emotional scars.

As long as I put Jesus first and continue to apply myself, I will continue to be successful. Also, because I chose a fixed rate mortgage in 2005, 35% of the mortgage has been paid off. I will never fail.
__________________________________________________________
Daryll's attitude here is all too typical -- there are a lot of Americans who look at the current economic situation and think "I'm OK -- nothing will happen to me." This is because they have a steady job, a mortgage with a fixed rate, health insurance, and they're doing fine getting their bills paid and even managing to save for retirement for themselves and college for their children.
Here's how it can come all unraveled. First, times get tough for their employer. The employer can no longer offer health insurance benefits for their employees because of the cost. Or the employer can only offer greatly stripped down plans for the same reason.
Then they get sick. I mean, many thousands of dollars worth of illness -- like a heart attack, cancer, kidney failure, whatever. That "stripped down" health benefit takes a bit of the edge off, but the out-of-pocket expenses are busting their entire budget.
Next, that employer who had been falling on tough times goes out of business and they lose their job. Now, not only are there medical expenses to be paid, but there's no income (except for unemployment benefits for six months), and that small health insurance plan is even gone. Trying to find a job while recovering from a major illness (or while having a chronic illness) is difficult. Trying to find health insurance with a pre-existing condition is pretty much impossible.
So what do these people do? They raid the 401(k). Of course, they have to pay penalties for early withdrawal, and because of the stock market it's not worth as much as it once was, but it's something. They also raid their savings accounts and their kids' college funds. Just to have money to pay bills. They borrow against the equity in their home, until it's mortgaged beyond what it's worth (thanks to falling real estate values).
Eventually, living expenses and medical bills take their toll. They can't pay their bills. They can't make their mortgage payments. Their house gets foreclosed on. And they have to declare bankruptcy.
There are people who believed they had done everything right, who believed in personal responsibility and did their best to live that way. And they lost everything due to circumstances beyond their control.
This may sound like a contrived extreme scenario, but it's happening all around the country. People like Daryll who claim that it can't happen to them are every bit as vulnerable as the rest of us. Nobody is immune. Any of us could become a "bum".
November 5th, 2008 at 4:59 pmview of the general meaninglessness in modern life.
Perhaps if you knew how to get the most out of your REAL life, as opposed to relying on a fake life with a pretend ghost, you'd have realized that in order to find true "meaning" in your daily life all you have to do is have a kind heart, and realize that the ONLY thing that matters in this transient life, the only true meaningful thing you leave behind, is the memory of how you treated people. In other words "kindness".
Who would Jesus bomb?
Who would Jesus feed and cloth?

There are people who believed they had done everything right, who believed in personal responsibility and did their best to live that way. And they lost everything due to circumstances beyond their control.
Your scenario is not that far-fetched. I would like to say that it doesn't take some of the extreme situations you list. For example, there no need for your employer to go bankrupt -getting the ax in a round of layoffs is enough (or, as a former employer of mine put it "we are not downsizing. We are right-sizing").
Also, it doesn't take a complete loss of a job. Being unable to find another job that pays as much as the one you just lost will put a lot of stress on the family's finances -this is very likely to happen during an economic turmoil like the one we are living in right now.
Some people are unfortunate enough to be laid off two or more times, with a few weeks worth of unemployment in between. With every period of unemployment, families have a tougher time keeping their finances afloat.
It also doesn't take a major illness. Getting mildly sick or injured (like a bad fall, or the flu) can put anyone out of action for a few days or weeks, adding to the problem.
These are problems I have either experienced myself or seen friends and acquaintances go through. RaptureReadys is either too young to know better or in deep denial, believing everything always goes according to your plans, and life never, ever, throws a monkey wrench in them.

First, you misspelled wombs and successful. Secondly, GE shut down that plant in 2006. I guess that your father was successful in running it into the ground in less then a year. Thirdly, that plant had no Electrical Engineering department. It was primarilly a manufacturing and marketing site.

Have you considered that if you can't work and take care of your own family, how are you going to help take care of someone else?
The Apostle Paul, a true Jesus freak, said that someone who doesn't take care of his own family is worse than an infidel, and he also said if you don't work you don't eat.
There have to be producers, and as much as possible the consumers have to be turned in to producers. By turning more consumers into producers more people can be helped.
This is what Jesus would expect: help the consumers become producers.
Jewish law makes provisions for the poor, but even the poor had to go get the grain out of the field.
Perhaps you know the Conservative Christian saw: God provides for the birds, but He doesn't kick it into their nests.
November 5th, 2008 at 5:48 pmThis is what Jesus would expect: help the consumers become producers.
Yeah, right.
Jebus has always been known as an astute businessman and his greatest contribution to modern society was ledger accounting, right?
Sheesh...
November 5th, 2008 at 5:52 pmAh, the old "they just don't work hard enough" argument.
Maybe bitbutt know this Conservative Christian saw: I got mine, so f uck you!
November 5th, 2008 at 5:54 pmZooey doesn't it strike you as odd that with the exception of the Mormon all of the repub candidates had issues with being the good husbands and providers that the christian conservative family values crew is always carping about? What is the story with that?

I had a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
I had a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I had a dream, and yesterday it came true..

Christ was a small businessman. He was a carpenter.
bit thinks the way that many others Christians think. Judaism and Christianity, for all practical purposes, invented Western Civilization. bit would call this a considerable contribution to modern society.
You're benefiting from this contribution at this very moment.

What the hell are you talking about? Do you expect we all grow our own food, sew our own clothes, make our own shoes?
Pray tell, how does more production help those who cannot afford to buy the goods produced?
Jesus being a trickle-down economics guru is too much of a creative interpretation of the Bible. Your prattle would be funny if I didn't suspect you actually mean the claptrap you spew...

This one is actually quite easy. bit is surprised you haven't already thought about it.
When a big name, politician or celebrity, behaves in a way that is incongruous with their stated beliefs, bit's second thought is usually, "Wonder if they really believe what they said they believe?"
bit's first thought is usually, "What would bit have done?" in the same situation.
You understand that the appearance of belief can be a tactic, don't you? For instance, who could be elected president in the U.S. if he didn't belief in God? So it's reasonable to expect that all candidate will be some sort of variety of Christian. Is it a tactic? Don't know.

What is this? "Free association?" You don't get it.
Jewish law instructed that a field would not be gleaned twice. What was left after the first gleaning could be gather by the poor.
Food was provide, but they, the poor, had to work for it. Many consider that allowing the poor to work builds their self-esteem.
You'll have to excuse bit. He has to pickup a homeless couple for supper.
November 5th, 2008 at 6:18 pmTho doth project too much.
When they tell you Jebus was a "carpenter", it's a metaphor.
Kinda like the whole myth of Jebus and the bible:
It's just an allegory. And based on the way most bible humpers throw around it's meaning to fit their arguments.
You should be heavily smote for such heresy.

There is absolutely nothing of your Christian value here. In fact judging others because of marital and monetary circumstance or orientation is immoral. Your family sounds like mine... and I had to rise above and redo my value system.
Wealth and goodness comes from within... that is what you take with you or leave as a legacy.

Rupture Ready--what do you know about your bible? Is it the King James version, which by the way was ordered produced by a KNOWN homo? Check the history. King James of England, who commissioned the work, was well known to be a homo who had a lover named Steenie that he kissed often in public on the mouth, a tongue that was too large for his mouth so that he constantly drooled and slobbered, did not wash his hands EVER until they were satin smooth and black as pitch, liked to tromp in the entrails of the animals that he killed so the blood soaked his hose and garments, loved to dabble in the black arts, chose a prominent Jew to help with the translation from Hebrew to English, and laughed about it all the way.
Did your head just explode?
I got a bunch more for ya--just waiting for your reply. But do go to a new thread. I have no patience to wait for you here. And I am working on my EdD and my DPT. Since you are a moron I will explain that that is a DOCTORATE IN EDUCATION AND A DOCTORATE IN PRACTICAL THEOLOGY RESPECTIVELY. Want to play? I eat idiotic pseudo-bible thumpers like you for breakfast and pick my teeth with your bones.

What does this trashing James have to do with anything, or is this simply the liberal technique of discrediting the work by discrediting the one who sponsored it?
Perhaps some cleric told him he could redeem himself if he paid for a English translation of the Bible, or perhaps he thought he could get in good with the BigGuy if he produced a Bible that also carried the name of King James.

now for the current situation at hand?
