Rove: Obama Hoodwinked America Into Electing A Progressive President

Last night on Fox’s Hannity and Colmes, Karl Rove argued that President-Elect Barack Obama ran a “center-right” campaign, but that if you “dig in” you can uncover the radical socialist that the right-wing warned the country about during the campaign:

ROVE: Let’s make it clear: He ran a center-right campaign. He said –

COLMES: Center-right? He was accused of being a radical socialist.

ROVE: Well, if you dug in.

Watch it:

In today’s Wall Street Journal, Rove argued similarly that Obama ran a center-right campaign that fooled a center-right electorate into supporting him:

It is a tribute to his skills that Mr. Obama, the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, won in a country that remains center-right.

Despite Rove’s claims, Americans were not somehow hoodwinked by the Obama campaign; they knew Obama was a progressive — and they supported him for it. In fact, internal McCain polling showed that a vast majority of Americans knew exactly what Obama’s agenda was, as Mark Salter told Politico:

Our polling showed that more than 60 percent of voters identified Obama as a liberal. Typically, a candidate is not going to win the presidency with those figures. But I think the country just disregarded it. People didn’t care. They just wanted the biggest change they could get.

Indeed, Obama and other progressive candidates were elected this week not in spite of their progressive stances on key policy issues, but because of them. As The Progress Report observed yesterday, “Obama ran on the most progressive platform of any presidential candidate in at least 15 years, including a promise of universal health care coverage, a dramatic transformation to a low-carbon economy, and a historic investment in education.”

UPDATE: Fox News’s Brit Hume, speaking with Laura Ingraham today, repeated the claim that Tuesday’s vote actually proved America is still a “center-right” country. He claimed that Obama didn’t “break the lock” that Republicans have had on the presidency but merely “picked the lock.” Listen here:

  7. hussein toasterhead says:

For once in my life, I hope Karl Rove is right about something.

Obama may be a pragmatic progressive on domestic policy, but his foreign policy is a bit farther right than I’d prefer: he wants to escalate the occupation in Afghanistan, has declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel, and supports the further expansion of NATO. My hope is that he’ll break a lot of the campaign promises he made to the center-right.

  8. DieNowForPeace says:

It’s when they realize that they have to disguise their agenda that we have to worry. But as long as they remain convinced that this is a “center-right” country (isn’t it amazing how all of a sudden that’s their new catch phrase?) then we’ve got little to worry about.

  18. MarkD says:

You know, these idiots have been denying reality for years.

From Reagan selling advanced missile technology to Iran to fund an illegal war, only to be considered by the right to be a great American … to a serial adulterer like Newt Gingrich whining about Bill Clinton … to Tom Delay’s rant against Clinton’s action in Kosovo, only to call anyone who dared question the Iraq misadventure a “traitor” or “unAmerican” or a “terrorist sympathizer” … to Tom Foley pushing legislation against online predators while being one himself … to Rove, Hume, and all the others thinking Democratic wins in two consecutive elections means it’s a “center-right country” … the GOP has lived in some sort of alternate reality for more than 20 years.

It’s a place where a flat-out lie can become “truth” if it’s repeated often enough, where only Republicans are real Americans, and any illegal act or violation of the Constitution is acceptable if done by a Republican.

In a perfect world, all of these clowns would be locked up in a mental institution and put under heavy sedation. It’s not a perfect world, however, so they instead keep showing up on my teevee and presented as “experts,” while sane liberal bloggers are seen as unserious and part of the fringe.

Maybe one day we can change that.

  20. Bob says:

Since people on the right are so easily fooled, it could be that they were. That would be because of their own ignorance, not because of a conniving candidate.

Do any of these numbskulls offer any proof of a center-right nation? If only we could have some sort of general, national election that would clearly show which way the country leaned.

  30. A Patriot Acting says:

I’ll be laughing my Progressive @ss off for quite some time watching that clip of Rove from Tuesday night. Rove is strategizing with Brit Hume at their election map about what states Obama needs to lose and McCain needs to win.

    transcript:
“If he (Obama) loses Ohio,” Rove said of McCain, “he goes from 286, which the Republicans carried in 2004, down to 266, and that puts him below the 270 threshold needed to win the White House. So he’d not only need to sweep the rest of these states which were won by the Republicns in 2004, he’d also need to pick up something as well.”

“Guess what Karl,” Brit Hume broke in, “I’ve just received word that the state of Ohio has gone for Barack Obama.”

It’s soooo classic! The two of them go from looking cautiously optimistic to utterly deflated in a matter of seconds. Rove stands there looking like the inept fool that we all know him to truly be. The entire election night was worth it just for these few prescious moments caught on video for all time! I don’t have access to the clip on my work computer. Can someone post it please?

  37. NoMoreBush says:

Clue phone ringing for TP — the Republicans not only have not solidified a permanent majority as conceived and constructed by Rove, but the party’s colossal failures in governing and stubborn cleaving to an often ineffective and hypocritical ideology (regardless of common sense or logic), whether in the Executive Branch or the Legislative Branch, have rendered it a weak, outdated and regional has been with no ideas to compete for the 21st century. All of this in large part due to Rove’s masterful architecture.

So, why do we care what Rove has to say exactly???? He is as irrelevant now as his flabby girth is wide.

  38. katy says:

listening to my lefty radio… lots of righty callers whining about how the media was so biased for OBAMA… that’s how he won… so much about him that voters didn’t know…

    can they ever be reached?

  39. DidHeJustSayThat says:

Every conservative and liberal media apparatus is enthralled with what those who’ve done the most damage to our politics over the last 10-20 years have to say. Regardless how wrong they’ve been in the past, they get to set the narrative and have everyone carry it.

It is complete hogwash, yet and still a site with the word Progress in its name can’t stop itself from keeping rooted in the past.

Hey, what needs to be done to get some of Obama’s Progressive agenda accomplished? Is it to soon to get the ball rolling?

  40. impeachcheneythenbush says:

I mean really, all anyone has to say in response to this gibberish is to cite two of the most popular government programs ever — the GI Bill and Social Security — hardly center right programs. Center right my _ _ _ fatboy.

Obama’s got more political capital than the previous joke of a prez ever thought he had, even when that joke was making it up. There will no longer be a void from which nothing bounces back. Also, Obama will be able to articulate ideas that were simply beyond bush, and so there won’t need to be a whole team of ‘water carriers’ to explain what he meant to say if only he could speak above a third grade level.

I’m so glad we got a leader who will talk to us instead of down and at us.

  48. impeachcheneythenbush says:

Perhaps Rove, et.al. should pay attention to this regarding the victory in North Carolina for Obama. If this isn’t progress, I don’t know what is:

For that matter, I had the same thought Eric Kleefeld did about the historical significance of this particular electoral win: “[W]e apparently now have the state that sent Jesse Helms to the Senate for 30 years, and re-elected him to his final term just 12 years ago, voting for an African-American candidate for president.”

    found at C&L this morning:

    The monster years

Last night wasn’t just a victory for tolerance; it wasn’t just a mandate for progressive change; it was also, I hope, the end of the monster years.

What I mean by that is that for the past 14 years America’s political life has been largely dominated by, well, monsters. Monsters like Tom DeLay, who suggested that the shootings at Columbine happened because schools teach students the theory of evolution. Monsters like Karl Rove, who declared that liberals wanted to offer “therapy and understanding” to terrorists. Monsters like Dick Cheney, who saw 9/11 as an opportunity to start torturing people.

And in our national discourse, we pretended that these monsters were reasonable, respectable people. To point out that the monsters were, in fact, monsters, was “shrill.”

Four years ago it seemed as if the monsters would dominate American politics for a long time to come. But for now, at least, they’ve been banished to the wilderness.

  53. EnnuiDivine says:

The best part of the whole “Barack Obama is the most liberal member of Senate” is that the ratings were based on the latest National Journal rankings (itself based on votes cast in the Senate). Obama may have come in first for the 110th Congress. Guess where McCain came in?

He didn’t. He was one of four senators who missed too many votes to appear on the list (the others: Tim Johnson [recovering from a massive brain hemorrhage], Craig Thomas [died of leukemia], John Barrasso [only served remainder of Thomas' term]. Wonder why no mainstream media source ever picks up on that. I don’t think it’s bias; I think it’s laziness.

  57. impeachcheneythenbush says:

Here’s a prime example of the mindset of this kind of people. Seems the world was actually celebrating our choice of Barack Obama as President, but his take is that the world sees us as with little character, resolve or loyalty.

The treatment President Bush has received from this country is nothing less than a disgrace. The attacks launched against him have been cruel and slanderous, proving to the world what little character and resolve we have. The president is not to blame for all these problems. He never lost faith in America or her people, and has tried his hardest to continue leading our nation during a very difficult time.

Our failure to stand by the one person who continued to stand by us has not gone unnoticed by our enemies. It has shown to the world how disloyal we can be when our president needed loyalty — a shameful display of arrogance and weakness that will haunt this nation long after Mr. Bush has left the White House.

The thing is, Obama did not win because he was the best man for the job. Obama won because of one word, “CHANGE”. That’s it. Over half the people who voted for Obama do not even know exactly what this man stand’s for, all they know is that they did not want another Bush in office. This election would have been the perfect one for anyone to run in against McCain on the Democratic ticket. If it were Hilary, she would have won. Haha, I love it. I love how you guy’s tell me to go to a website to check on this man who is getting ready to be our Commander-in-Chief. I love how you guy’s went blindly to the polls to put your vote in for a man you know absolutely nothing about. No, NoMoreBush, you do not owe me anything. But, let me tell you something, you owe it to yourself and to your country to know exactly what the hell it is you are voting for. I don’t even wanna know your reasons, but think about it for a second, and if you can’t come up with exactly what it is that Obama stands for without going to a website, you’re an idiot.

  83. katy says:

    hey, jonathon -

why don’t YOU go to barackobama.com and find out for yourself

“exactly what Obama is going to do for America, besides just change it.”

’cause that’s what most of the people did who voted for him…

that should keep you busy for a while, and you’ll be smarter for it.

  84. NoMoreBush says:

Hey A-Hole, how do you presume to speak for what I or anyone else knew or knows before going into the voting booth? Instead of assuming you can speak for others, why don’t you instead just STFU.

  85. trollsbwild says:

Frankly, he is out of touch
Until there is a new election.
Certainly, we do not agree with him
Karl shouldn’t plan on leaving the country.

Young voters do not buy into his propaganda
    On the ideology
Unless they are drunk or on drugs.

  86. Jonathan111 says:

NoMoreBush, you would’ve voted for a house cat if it’s premise was “I’m not Bush, my opponent voted with Bush 90 percent of the time.”

  87. Uncle Ho says:

Alejandro; Consider this; is the draft liberal or fascist?

  88. superid says:

I am a Quaker librarian by nature, but I’m wondering when someone is going to just punch Rove in the face. Forget the citizen’s arrest, I want to see a hay maker.

    - Progressive tax structure
    - Health coverage for all Americans
    - A more diplomacy-focused foreign policy
    - More investment in infrastructure and green technology
    - Responsible end to the war in Iraq
    - Ability to speak like a President and not a stupid plumber.

  90. Lisa FTW says:

    Jonathan 111,
actually, Obama HAS already changed America in a sense. I have never seen more citizens engaged in the political process, nor have I felt such a sense of optimism about our nation’s future…..the difference is palpable. As my 58-year old fiancee says: The ONLY constant in life is CHANGE!

There is no doubt it will be impossible to enact ALL the proposals Obama has put forth, because the executive branch is but 1/3 of the government. Obviously, the President has to work in conjunction with the other branches to implement changes.

I have already studied our President elect and his ideas, in fact for over 2 years. Since you are asking for specifics, why don’t you read Obama’s policy proposals, like most of us here have, and then maybe you will understand why we support his presidency.

  91. katy says:

curious – what does “Quaker” have to do with being a “librarian”?

  93. Bob says:

Hopefully, the anti-intellectual period is over. It has been exasperating. One should have at least read the Constitution as a prerequisite. Obama’s history as a Constutional scholar makes him more qualified to hold the office than anyone from any party that has run in years. It is contingent upon one swearing to uphold the Constitution, so the most qualified person is well versed in the Constitution: Barack Obama.

  94. NoMoreBush says:

No Jonathan111, that was in 2004 — I would have voted for a house cat instead of Bush and you know what, the house cat would have done a better job. In case you did not notice, as McCain said, Bush was not on the ballot. Just because I won’t take your transparent bait and justify my vote does not permit you to speculate on my or anyone else’s motives. Now don’t you have some masturbating to do?

  95. Winski says:

NOBODY (with more than 19 brain cells left) thinks Fixed Noise is relevant anymore! So..ANYTHING Turd Blossom says on a network that’s NOT RELEVANT anymore (and will probably lose their broadcast license if the “Fairness Doctrine” is re-implemented)…so,

    Conclusion!!

    WHO CARES!!!

  96. fabooj says:

They “put the ‘lude’ in ‘Deluded’”.

  97. superid says:

“Urbane to comfort them, the Quaker librarian purred.” It’s from Ulysses. I just like the way the sentence sounds. Also, Quakers are pacifists and librarians are not usually symbols unrestrained pugilism.

  98. dbadass says:

    Jonathan111

“Over half the people who voted for Obama do not even know exactly what this man stand’s for”

Interesting, care to defend it? What do you base this on? Wanna tell me what Mr Obama stands for since you seem to imply that you know something I don’t. Thanks

  99. pete says:

    In no perticular order:

Extricate us from Iraq. Push for a national health care system. Resume effective diplomacy with the rest of the world. Clean bushbots out of the DOJ. Appoint judges who honor the Constitution. Restore a graduated income tax. Vigorously pursue cleaner energy sources. Apply rational, logical, intelligence to the inevitable crises. End the idiotic, and divisive, “anti-American” rhetoric coming from our highest elected leaders.

There. That should be enough for the simple mind of the stupid troll.

  100. katy says:

    ok… i’m impressed now…

  101. FunMe says:

OK for the next 8 or more years while the People Party is in power, the GOP, fascists, and republiCONs will continue to make up shit, and like parrots, repeat their same OLD TIRED TALKING POINTS.

Guess what? They are not in power, and who cares what they say. They will just be IGNORED!

Those talking heads are going crazy. I LOVE it!

  102. Abu Ben Hussein Leporello says:

Really! For Once a majority of Americans voted for an Intelligent, Thoughtful, Patient, Consus Building, Capable American! What is the downside of that??? Let’s all hope this is the start of a trend of true Statesmen instead of the shrieking demagogues who’ve been ‘leading’ for the last eight years. Intelligent Leadership, what a concept!

  103. sectionop92 says:

Alejandro is dumb as the day is long.

Having a backdoor draft that is the National Guard is involuntary servitude. Then stop-loss’ing members of the military who are due to have their tours ended is involuntary servitude.

100 hours of community service is not involuntary servitude. One does 100 hours and after 100 hours it is done with. One can choose to do those 100 hours. I have never heard of a police squad enforcing community service or a stop-loss of those volunteers.

  104. pete says:

Where’s your comeback, stupid troll? Waiting for Karl to tell you what to think? Waiting for Jebus to proclaim your soul “worthy”. Waiting for Bible Spice to show you her tits? Waiting for your pathetic, malformed, brain to function?

  105. pete says:

See? The stupid troll suffers the same weakness as Flippy McSpin, Bible Spice, and the traitorous neocons who have all but destroyed our nation. When called upon to actually think, they fold like a house of cards.

  106. dbadass says:

Maybe I missed it but where above did Jonathan111 tell us what Mr McCain stands for? Does that me he doesn’t know or is it just a bunch of talk talk elephant talk?

  107. pete says:

Now that’s not fair, dbadass. If the stupid troll had to explain Flippy McSpins positions he might, accidentally, realize that ol’ Flippy himself proudly proclaimed he “voted with Bush 90% of the time”. He might realize how tremendously bad his choice for VP was. He might realize that Flippy never established a position he didn’t contradict within hours. He might realize that Flippy is a fraud.

  108. pete says:

Time’s up, stupid troll. You really should learn to have your talking points in order before you issue a challenge. Buh-bye.

I do see some hidden racism in his/her posts.

I’ll let ya’ll decide. I am going home!

  111. Badger says:

There was a time, not so long ago , when McCain and Obama were TIED in the polls.

Then Lehman Bros. Tanked, and the Economic Meltdown Crisis got everyone’s Attention.

Voters got to see Sen. Obama acting Calm and Poised, as he asked Penetrating Questions , in Govt. Hearings.

Voters got to see Sen. McCain acting eratic and impulsive, as he contributed nothing to the Hearings, and spent days pacing around the capitol with a cellphone to his ear.

That’s when Sen. Obama Started to Pull Ahead.

Sen. McCain was right about one thing, he had been TESTED.

  112. kasinca says:

  115. 666lattes says:

    Why I voted for Obama

Our country is in peril and will be facing some of the most daunting challenges we have ever faced in the near future. As far back as his speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention, when I hadn’t ever heard of this guy, I was inspired by the words, yes words, that he spoke and continued to speak on such a consistent basis that were actually resonating with my own thoughts…

The more I heard about him, as far as turning down high-powered Wall St jobs to become a Community Orgnanizer to his early stance on the war that exactly matched mine, I could tell that he was my candidate. He is the first true Presidential candidate of my Generation where I didn’t have to compromise my beliefs (so much) to support him and I could see the well thought out reasons for the differences that I did have to compromise on.

I had never volunteered for anything in my entire life, but I volunteered for his campaign almost a year ago to help with the primaries. When I saw that others clost to my situation were being inspired to do the same I knew that this candidate was something special.

If this guy could inspire me to spend my time like I did, then he may just be the right guy to inspire our Nation as a whole to confront our oncoming challenges (ending 2 wars, avoiding the next economic Depression, global climate change and other things that may be yet unseen).

If you ever really listen, Obama repeats often that this isn’t about him, it’s about us. I don’t think it’s just rhetoric because he seems smart enough to know what it’s going to take to turn this country around and he can’t do it alone. It would be ridiculous for anyone to think so.

Sure, unless you’re psychic, you never know exactly what you’re going to get, but I’m more than willing to take that chance… and, thankfully, so is most of America.

Jonathan111, who did you vote for and why?

  116. scytherius says:

God I hope they keep this up. They’ll never hold any significant office again and their numbers will continue to dwindle. This is utterly awesome

  117. ElBruce says:

I sure wasn’t hoodwinked. I voted for a liberal, I got one. Obama was nothing short of extremely clear about exactly what he wanted to do, and that’s what I wanted done. Same with everybody else who voted for him.

Rove is turning into Kristol II. They need to stop sending us messages from backwards-land.

  118. Brain From Planet Arous says:

Uh huh….That’s why both of them voted for the Extortion/Bailout bill, and Obama was given the most money by Wall Street.

  119. Brain From Planet Arous says:

    ElBruce Says:

    I sure wasn’t hoodwinked. I voted for a liberal, I got one

    Obama voting recently

    Reauthorize Patriot Act

    further funding of Iraq Invasion

    Voted for Telecom Immunity

    Voted For Oil drilling

    Voted for extortion/Bailout by/for Wall Street/banks

    Against Gay Marriage

    Rahm Emmanuel

Lied about Russia, Georgia, and South Ossetia

Wants to expand the size and budget of the Pentagon

    Some liberal stances:

    Seeking universal health care.

Seeking 7 days of paid sick leave all across the country.

a strong advocate of net neutrality, universal broadband, and a diversified media structure.

Supports the Employee Free Choice Act and wants a more progressive tax code.

  120. Aanya says:

I’m laughing so hard at this, let me catch my breath! Is Rove talking about himself? We’ve seen all he has now! His gig is up! He’s an entire section of the coming History books. Karl Rove will be mixed closely with Hitler, Stalin and especially those newest, most destructive of all, George W Bush and Dick Cheney! My greatest prayer for the future, is to see Rove and his fellow criminals, all indicted, convicted and put away for eternity!

  121. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Damn! I missed the troll-fest.

I gotta get a paging system set up so I don’t miss those.

  122. Tim Vaculik says:

Well, Mr. Rove was EXACTLY right in his assessment.

I fully believe that most of the people who voted for Obama have no earthly idea WHAT he stands for, what he will do, who his long-time associates are, etc. etc. That’s O.K., a lot of them will wake up eventually.

For the hard core – they know exactly who and what he is and they embrace it.

  123. Tim Vaculik says:

A couple of things you “progressives” need to keep in mind:

    1. Conservatives aren’t going away. In fact, more than a few of the Republicans in Congress and the Senate who lost were RINO’s, NOT true conservatives. True conservatives never were thrilled with John McCain in the first place. The Republicans who will greet the new President are going to be a lot tougher than the RINO’s.

    2. Silver linings dept. – The Dems won’t have a “super-majority” in the U.S. Senate!!!! YEAH! Can you spell FILIBUSTER?

    3. Doesn’t look like Al Franken will make it to the U.S. Senate.

    4. 2012

  124. Robt says:

And the Supreme Court and Rove stole elections from the American people in 2000 and 2004 for Bush.

So listen to the man that refuses to testify in front of Congress. Rove should be investigated and possibly prosecuted.

  125. EugeneDebs says:

    Jonathan111 Says:

Come on Random, help me understand exactly what it is that Obama is going to do for this country… The only thing I heard was “Change, healthcare, taxes, McCain voted with Bush over 90 percent of the time…..”

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Then you are an idiot. Obama said MANY times in his speeches what he was going to do. In his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination alone he made clear what he would do specifically. I would tell you EXACTLY WHAT but your ignorance amuses me. Keep telling me that we dont know what he is going to do, though he has MANY TIMES made it plain. I love it when wingnuts proudly parade their ignorance

  126. sacopenapa says:

ARREST ROVE! He is a criminal!

  127. ObamaIsOur44thpres says:

Karl Rove is the enemy and he is a complete ignorant, racist, idiot fool that only the Most High Living God can sufficiently and adequately bring down, and I pray that he does.

He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. – 1 John 3:8

I rebuke Rove’s evil words and deeds in the name of Jesus and cover President-Elect Barack Obama, his family, and his administration in the blood of Jesus. I declare the God’s Word of divine protection and provisions for his life and presidency in 2008 and 2012.

You [ Barack Obama], are from God and have overcome them [the enemy's attacks, schemes, and plots ] , because the one [God] who is in you [ Barack Obama] is greater than the one [the enemy ] who is in the world. – 1 John 4:4

No weapon forged against you [ Barack Obama] will prevail, and you [ Barack Obama] will refute every tongue that accuses you [ Barack Obama] . This is the heritage of the servants [ Barack Obama] of the LORD, and this is their [ Barack Obama] vindication from me,” declares the LORD. – Isaiah 54:17

” I [ God ] will send my terror ahead of you [ Barack Obama] and throw into confusion every nation you [ Barack Obama] encounter. I [ God ] will make all your [ Barack Obama] enemies turn their backs and run.” – Exodus 23:27

The Lord will rescue me [ Barack Obama] from every evil attack and will bring me [ Barack Obama] safely to his heavenly kingdom. – 2 Timothy 4:18

11 For he will command his angels concerning you [ Barack Obama] to guard you [ Barack Obama ] in all your ways; 12 they will lift you [ Barack Obama ] up in their hands, so that you [ Barack Obama ] will not strike your [his] foot against a stone. 13 You [ Barack Obama ] will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you [ Barack Obama ] will trample the great lion and the serpent. – Psalm 91:11-13

I have given you [ Barack Obama ] authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you [ Barack Obama ]. – Luke 10:19

It’s time for the American people to get it right and NOT vote for McCain-Palin, instead vote for change. It’s time for this country to turn the page and seek a new and better future for ourselves and our children. It’s time for REAL change in Washington, it’s time to elect Barack Obama for president !

Obama-Biden are the wiser and stronger team to solve the crucial challenges we have in this nation and abroad !

    Amen.
