Unemployment benefits reached a 25-year high, jumping by 122,000 to 3.84 million in late October. It is the “highest level since late February 1983,” according to the Labor Department.

Yesterday, after a wrap-up meeting with his campaign advisers in the morning, John McCain talked about what he’ll do next. “He’s thinking about the future and getting engaged with the Senate again,” senior adviser Charlie Black said. He plans to focus on “Iraq, Afghanistan and the other foreign policy issues.”

Cabinet rumors: Sen. Dick Lugar (R-IN) says he isn’t interested in becoming Secretary of State. Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, who is reportedly being considered for health secretary, says he’d consider a potential position. Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers is a leading contender to return to that post.

Joe Biden is eyeing Walter Mondale – not Dick Cheney – as a vice presidential role model. “Mondale, who served under President Jimmy Carter in the 1970s, was consulted on almost every appointment and had access to the same documents as the president.” “Biden will be more interested in carrying out the Obama agenda as opposed to his own agenda,” said Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA).

Yesterday, talk show host and LGBT activist Ellen DeGeneres put out a statement saying she is “saddened beyond belief” that California voters approved a ban on marriage equality. Gay marriage backers have also filed three lawsuits asking the California Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8.

A group of conservative power brokers are meeting today in Virginia to “discuss the future of the movement and the GOP.” Convened by Brent Bozell, head of the right-wing Media Research Center, the meeting will include “roughly twenty leaders” and “conservative political and media strategists.”

71 million: Number of viewers who tuned into election night television coverage on Tuesday, according to Nielsen. In 2004, 59.2 million viewers tuned in as President Bush defeated Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), and 61.6 million watched the contest between Bush and Al Gore in 2000.

Fearing a terrorist attack during the presidential transition, “Homeland Security officials are working with Congress to ensure that the Senate moves quickly to confirm a key Cabinet nominee.” The top senators on the Senate Homeland Security Committee are now arguing “that the DHS secretary must be bumped up to top priority, and the secretary should be confirmed on or close to Inauguration Day.”

CentCom Commander Gen. David Petraeus “has decided to reduce the number of U.S. combat brigades in Iraq from 15 to 14 about six weeks earlier than planned, as a result of dramatically lower violence there.” A brigade from the 10th Mountain Division “was scheduled to go to Iraq in its place [but] will instead deploy to Afghanistan.”

Ambassador Ryan Crocker hosted 250 Iraqi officials at the first event in the new American embassy in Baghdad, which cost half a billion dollars and has not yet officially opened. He reminded his guests, “Our president today is George Bush, and he will be our president for the next two and a half months,” and said the size of the embassy reflects America’s long-term “commitment to democracy in Iraq.”

And finally: Juror 11 is ready to tell all. This person was one of the jurors in the corruption trial of Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), who was eventually found guilty on seven felony counts. Now, this juror has decided to start a blog, telling how he or she became Juror 11 and the story behind the missing juror: “Through out the trial and deliberations I had to check my emotions at the door and reserve my comments, but now that it is over let the flood begin!”

"Getting engaged with the Senate again"??? Um...isn't that his JOB??? He's got another two years left on his current Senate term, and I would think that going and finishing the job Arizonans expect him to do would be a no-brainer -- not something he has to spend a long time thinking about.

  5. greenpagan Says:

    Re the GOP.

It has bifurcated into distinct and separate political parties. Evidence: the support for Obama coming from such GOP stalwarts as Powell and Hagel, among others.

The McCain candidacy will be looked at as a historical watershed.

Not surprising. I cant think of any intelligent educated knowledgeable rational person who have Cheney as VP role model

I'm thinking it has more to do with Cheney's commitment to the contractors' bottom line.

If what I've read is accurate, congratulations to our Oregonian friends in that Senate race.

Coleman & Franken, out of nearly 3 million votes, are separated by less than 500 votes. Early word this morning is that one polling place 'forgot' to call in their numbers to the Sec/State. I don't know if it's a 'blue' district, but I'm hoping that's the case.

Chambliss appears to be holding on by a thread; hope that turns around.

I hope Obama doesn't pick too many Dem Senators for his admin. I think Daschle would be a good pick for a cabinet position, though. He got railroaded by the Right in SD, but it was nice to see Tim Johnson re-elected. SD also defeated an outrageous abortion bill, set up by outsiders to challenge Roe V Wade.

    Still smiling!

And he's going to have to produce something with his name on it, right quick, to get it through the legislative process in time to be used in two years time, for a Senate campaign.

It's also going to be a very hard sell to his constituents, that he's the right man to deal with Obama.

I'm guessing his "no earmark" reputation is going to be taking a hit, for the cause.

Regarding nomination and confirmation of the DHS Secretary:

Inside-the-Beltway chatter before the election listed several possibilities Obama might tap to be his DHS chief, including 9/11 Commission member and former Rep. Tim Roemer (D-Ind.); James Lee Witt, former President Clinton’s Federal Emergency Management Agency director; New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly; and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano (D). Napolitano was named to Obama’s transition advisory board on Wednesday.

Raymond Kelly would be one of the absolutely worst choices, Google the 2004 Republican National Convention. Many problems with out-of-control police actions, including illegally fingerprinting 1500 protesters that had been arrested. My choice would be James Witt. Experienced and not a danger to our civil liberties.

The divisions between the GOP rightwing and the GOP moderates is as great as the division between the southern Dems and the rest of the Democratic Party during the Civil Rights Era. They are probably beyond any long-term reconciliation. That type of thing isn't unusual. There are great and growing cultural differences within both major political parties. That's just a natural part of the sociological dynamic.

I suppose this is a necessary CYA move for the party, but, IMO, the DHS will have little actual effect on potential terrorist attacks. It ought to be abolished or renamed the Department of Shampoo Inspectors.

True. But we also need coordination and communication between these bureaus, so we don't have the kind of stovepiping and turf warfare between the FBI and CIA that led up to 9/11. Whether we need an actual bureaucracy to do that is, of course, open to debate.

The right has been clinging to this "victory" in light of their massive losses elsewhere. I don't care who voted for this proposition -- Latino, white, black, etc. -- you're supposed to treat others how you'd like to be treated. It's a simple rule, if you'd like for others to be accepting and tolerant of your presence, then don't stand in someone else's way in their bid for a decent quality of life.

"The magnitude here is that you are effectively rendering equal protection a nullity if a simple majority can so easily carve an exception into it," she said. "Equal protection is supposed to prevent the targeting and subjugation of a minority group by a simple majority vote."

And couple that with NYC Mayor Bloomberg who only Tuesday, subverted the democratic process (twice over) when he strong armed the NYC council to overturn the term limits amendment to the NYC Constitution that was re-ratified twice in recent years by popular votes. In fact it was reason we were able to shrug off the fascist shackles of the Gooliani administration. He left because of term limits. Even HE did not feel compelled to have to stay at the helm of the city, and this was 1 month after 9/11. But Bloomberg, oh he is such a savant that he MUST stay at the helm through this financial crisis. He, if you are such a friggin financial genious, where were you BEFORE it happened.

We have a quagmire in Iraq. Children being abused, being abducted, being murdered. Crooks in our government getting re-elected. A stock market in turmoil. Middle class citizens watching their retirement funding fly away.
...And we're concerned about "gay marriages"???
    That is seriously fcked up!
    Just sayin...

45 year high should be 25 year, as evident by the above paragraph.

Oh, Daryll is probably off somewhere in that fantasy world of his where Huckabee is the president-elect, or he is getting his meds adjusted by his shrink.

    Hehe.

True. But we also need coordination and communication between these bureaus, so we don’t have the kind of stovepiping and turf warfare between the FBI and CIA that led up to 9/11. Whether we need an actual bureaucracy to do that is, of course, open to debate.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

I would agree with you there. Under Bill Clinton there was a terrorist attack on the WTC and within 4 years, 6 people were tried, convicted, and incarcerated without a DHS or any military involvement.

I think the government just needs to get back to the way it was and have an administration pay attention when good information is brought to them.

I am sure I already know the answer to this but, Do you think Obama will ignore the info from his first top secret intel briefing? I don't, but I remember Bush doing it amost 8 years ago!

Born in Illinois, Reagan moved to Los Angeles, California in the 1930s, where he was an actor, president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and a spokesman for General Electric (GE). His start in politics occurred during his work for GE; originally a member of the Democratic Party, he switched to the Republican Party in 1962, at the age of 51.

    From DemocracyNow.org:

"...Lawrence Summers, who headed the Treasury under President Bill Clinton. Summers resigned as president of Harvard University two years ago amidst uproar over his suggestion that women have less innate scientific ability than men. In 1991, while working as chief economist for the World Bank, Summers wrote an infamous memo that advocated exporting the pollution of industrialized countries to the third world, which he called “underpolluted.”
