Obama breaks down his family’s puppy dilemma: ‘We have two criteria that have to be reconciled.’

After meeting with his Transition Advisory Board this afternoon, President-elect Barack Obama held a press conference to discuss his plan to move forward on the economy. Obama laid out three principles: “a rescue plan for the middle class,” “address the spreading impact of the financial crisis on other sectors of our economy,” and “review the implementation of this Administration’s financial program.” When Obama opened it for questions, the Chicago Sun-Times’ Lynn Sweet turned the page on the economy, asking instead about his family’s puppy dilemma — namely, what kind of puppy will he get for his daughters. Addressing the question with his trademark dead-pan sarcasm, Obama responded, “We have two criteria that have to be reconciled.” Watch it:

Obama indicated his own personal leanings: “Our preference would be to get a shelter puppy, but obviously a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me.”

UpdateFishbowl DC notes that Obama did not call on Fox News in his first press conference.

Get a cat. Problem solved! :D

I think, given Malia's allergy, a Siberian husky is the way to go. They're naughty, but very smart, gorgeous and hypoallergenic. And there's a Husky rescue near them in Maryland.

    Think about it, Mr. President-elect.

I tuned in to see this historic press conference and was not disappointed. It is going to be so refreshing to have a President who talks straight, couches his decisions in constructive principles and is actually open and honest with the American public.

He will need to be doing alot of communicating in the weeks and months and years ahead. I have every confidence that he will. I thought he did a good job today of walking that fine line between being president-elect but not yet president. If he can remain out front on the key issues between now and January, he should be able to influence the current president and Congress toward his policy direction. With time at such a premium, it is important for him to do this so as to avoid GDumbya's normal instinct to do exactly the wrong thing and make matters worse.

  9. misshusseinmolly Says:

I'm with Obama on this one. There are many adoptable puppies in shelters, and shelter puppies come with all their shots and they're vetted for health.

And such a high-profile puppy adoption would give shelters a boost. The fact that shelter dogs get euthanized because nobody wants them while disreputable puppy mills get patronized is just tragic.

And if they really want a purebred, let's hope it comes from a reputable breeder and not a puppy mill.

  13. Sawgrass Says:

The dog topic probably has more interest than many may realize...with the juvenile set. As my 7yo daughter canvassed with me, we talked about how things would be different in the WH for the Obama children. I mentioned the promise of a dog, and she has been interested in that topic ever since. On the morning after Election Day, a news broadcast featured a discussion with a group of school children, and they were keen to discuss the puppy choices.

We've come a long way since the tabloid days of the Bush twins. Thankfully.

  19. Cappy Says:

It's been my experience that mutts are smarter than purebreds.

  20. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

I hope he goes for a shelter puppy as well. It would certainly give a boost to shelters around the country, and increase the number of adoptions (for all of their animals) substantially, at least for awhile. I think cats are out, however, because of the allergy issue. Guess it depends on HOW allergic. I'm allergic to cats (and horses!) but have had cats most of my life and horses twice. Just learned to avoid doing the things that trigger the reactions, like rubbing my eyes after petting them. But if Malia has severe respiratory allergies, then they need to be more careful. By the way, there are no animals that won't cause an allergic reaction, including short hair dogs. But a good deal of that can be eliminated by regular grooming.

  21. Uncle Ho Says:

Obama did not call on Faux snooze in his first press conference.

Outstanding! They will only lob grenades at him for the next 4-8 years anyhow. Banish them from the White House press corps altogether.

Word! Bush is the product of too much "neuvo blue" blood inbreeding. Genetic flaws far too obvious. I suppose imbecile is the word I'm looking for.

I have to pinch myself every day to keep believing that this is not a dream, that we really did elect this marvelous man.

I volunteer to work with the dogs at the Washington Animal Rescue League, and can highly recommend "mutts" to President-elect Obama and his family. In fact, we have a few rescue dogs at WARL right now that I think would serve quite well in the White House -- and I don't think they'd be biting any reporters on the hand, either...

We also have one rescue dog in our family's life, and of the three dogs we have, the rescue dog is by far the most well-adjusted. The Obamas would do quite well with a rescue dog, mutt or not...

For now, perhaps. But a puppy won't turn on him the first time he can't get enough votes together for a budget bill.

    _____________________________________________________________

Granted, the First Puppy choice probably isn't as critical a topic as dealing with the economy, but people are still interested enough for it to merit a mention.

As far as the media being Obama's lapdog, that will only last as long as the honeymoon does. After the inauguration, look for the media to bash Obama on a regular basis, as they do most presidents, regardless of party. Of course, it goes without saying that Fox News and the talk show pundits will continue their Obama bashing as they have been, so you should find plenty on radio, television, and the print media to keep you happy.

I'll attest to that. We have several dogs, all rescues, but the most neurotic of the pack originally came from a pet store before we rescued her.

As for the press issue, this is the honeymoon, I'm sure the dishes will be flying sometime in the future. For now let's enjoy it while we can. I pull for a rescue puppy as well, but I'm not the one who's got to answer to a wife and daughters.
Best Wishes to the Obamas, God Bless.

  57. DNFP Says:

Chris Matthews saying his job is now to make Obama a success?

IF he actually said that, you're just mis-interpreting the idea of coming together as a nation behind the man elected by the majority to make this country a place to be proud of again (i.e. a "success").

Allow me to feed you a line you're probably more familiar with.

    ...

and Dave - know the difference between "journalist" and "pundit"?
besides that, as long as it's the truth, not a problem...

  59. katy Says:

excuse me - David, not Dave...
    you know ...
    ...

lots of "foreclosure" dogs out there also...

norman goldman was on ed schultz today... he had some good ideas about the puppy situation... very passionate about it too...

he had this idea that the girls/family could write a book about the search and adoption process, auction off signed copies to donate to pet adoption agencies...

this could be a very good thing for pet adoption.

haven't heard what happened, if anything...

  62. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

I think it's a good thing to be talking about upholding his promise to his children. For one thing, it reminds me that his first concern is for his girls' happiness. Second, I am an dog lover and the idea that he is giving a plug for shelter animals and spotlighting their plight even indirectly is a good thing, too. Perhaps we could get some legislation passed against puppy mills-a bane to my happiness and a dear cause of my heart. I am always finding strays and bringing them home, nursing them back to health and often lucky enough in finding their owners. Costs a lot of time, aggravation and money sometimes...sigh.

By the way Buckie Boy-you have my sympathy. I have a Jack Russell, too. She thinks her middle name is "No-No".

  63. zorbear Says:

Someone needs to point out the value of purebred Rescue Organizations - not all of them are older dogs and not all of them have been abused. My non-allergenic Bouvier was a rescue puppy that was simply unwanted. And he just won the "Bouvier Hero of the Year" award for saving my life.

What more could a father want for his children?

  64. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

#64--I'll bite (ha), what did your dog do? Really, seriously, I'm curious because I have an awesome dog, too (not the naughty Jack I mentioned above but a cool 130 lb 9 year old shepherd/malamute mix). I might be interested in a Bouvier rescue because of family allergy issues and I want a bigger dog after my big boy passes, which hopefully will be a looong time from now.
