Poll: 64 percent of Republicans want Palin to run for president in 2012.

In a new Rasmussen poll out today, Republicans overwhelmingly say that they want Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as their presidential nominee in 2012. Sixty-four percent of GOP respondents said that Palin would be their top choice in 2012:

When asked to choose among some of the GOP’s top names for their choice for the party’s 2012 presidential nominee, 64% say Palin. The next closest contenders are two former governors and unsuccessful challengers for the presidential nomination this year — Mike Huckabee of Arkansas with 12% support and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts with 11%.

Three other sitting governors – Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Charlie Crist of Florida and Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota – all pull low single-digit support.

In the same poll, 69 percent of Republicans said that Palin “helped John McCain’s bid for the presidency,” even though exit polls found that 60 percent of voters felt that she was “not qualified to be president if necessary.” (HT: John McCormack)

Shoot, as a Liberal I want her to run for President. It would be the best insurance that Obama gets a second term!

GOP comitted to self immolation with their tenacious reality denial. Caribou Bimbo has Quayled herself and is a national joke that seems to go right over the head of the more obtuse Republicans. C'mon GOP stop making it so EASY to marginalize your sorry butts

  10. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

I completely agree!! Run her every 4 years = permanent minority status for the GOPigs.

Poll: 64 percent of Republicans want Palin to run for president in 2012.»

    - - Palin vs. Obama in a debate. Will the networks televise that type of carnage, especially in prime time?

And that poll is highly dubious. I've seen the GOP's choices in order as Romney, Huckabee and Palin. You out Palin through the rigors of an actual primary season and she'll get the crap beat outta her.

  13. Stupid Git Says:

    Joe The Plumber for VP!!!

Larry the Cable Guy for Attorney General!

    Sean Hannity for Presidential Poolboy!

Buddy Jesus for White House Press Secretary!

  14. Michael Lafferty Says:

Wow. That's seriously shocking. I mean, seriously!

One might imagine that Republicans—as represented by this sample—would eventually come to their collective senses. Of course, this is nominally the same group who supported President Bush for seven or more years.

It will be strange, though strangely satisfying, to watch this group of lemmings head over the cliff in four years. They have apparently learned nothing. Nothing.

  15. stateofthedivision Says:

Palin-Gingrich has all the allure, I mean manure of Bush-Cheney. An incurious governor of a big energy state paired with a heavy handed veteran politician.

  16. veteran Says:

    WOW!

Who wants to join me in a Socialist Democrats for Caribou Barbie for President

  17. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Let's not get giddy about this prospect just yet... after all, it'll give her four years to study up on geography, the Bush Doctrine and the newspapers she reads. Not to mention a Supreme Court case with which she disagrees.

She could become a formidible... aw, who am I kidding?

    RUN SARAH RUN!

  18. Uncle Fester Lurks Says:

I just laugh my ass off when I hear the MSM bobbleheads try to convince us that Palin will be a force in the future.

Puh-leeeeeeeeeeeeze! The woman was chosen as eye candy to appeal to all of the Joe Six Packs, rednecks and drooling, knuckledragging neanderthals of the republican party, while chosen to attract hockey/soccer moms across the country.

She has no politcal savvy, she is a cheerleader for the base, her speeches cantained no substance only GOP sound bites. Her claim to be an outsider and reformer are a myth as she is as corrupt as the politicians in DC. She has abused her power as mayor of Wasilla and as Governor of Alaska, she has received money for political favors as Governor. She is a National joke!

  19. Marie Says:

Sixty four percent of republicans are masochists.

Damn, Palin/Gingrich...thats a scary thought and a ticket that would probably appeal to all of the wingnuts on the radical reich.

  21. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

Why is the MSM so shocked that the McCain campaign is smearing Palin? These scumbags just spent the last 6 months smearing Obama and Biden....and NOW you're shocked? Idiots....

  25. Curlew Says:

And I want her as their candidate as well. Lets begin a "Sarah 2012" effort right now...or "Democrats for Sarah 2012" Something like that. Brimg em on.

  26. tsawyer Says:

Great! That's 64% of 28%. 19% of the population of the United States wants here to be president..... that should get it done.

  27. johnnyRocketpants Says:

This doesn't surprise me one bit. I'd say 64% of registered republicans are what we would call 'the base'. They love this woman for some reason.

And I don't think the prospects of her running in 2012 are that much of a stretch. Particularly if Obama has high approval, why would the republicans want to run anyone of substance just to get pounded again? It could very well be a strategy of the right to use her and her followers again. Let her get hammered in the election, then say to the bitter, religious, gun-clinging crowd, "Sorry folks, we tried again with your candidate,... never again". Of course, they would hold on to abortion and gay rights issues to keep those folks hooked, but they'd never have to run a fool like her again to satisfy the base. And they wouldn't have to sacrifice a 'decent' candidate in 2012.

  28. celtic cynic Says:

Interesting poll. Unfortunately, it has a margin of error of up to 69%.

Sarah P was on NBC Nightly News a few minutes ago proclaiming her innocence and exhorting young girls to 'study hard' (just like she did). Hoo, Boy.

  29. tombaker Says:

Poor, bankrupt righties. Now they've got no voters, and no good candidates.

  30. pbg Says:

The ONLY reason they like her is they think she gets liberals mad.
    That's it. That's all she's got.

Whereas I agree with Gilbert and Sullivan that my object all sublime which I shall achieve in time...

    "To make each wingnut pent/
    unwillingly represent/

    of innocent merriment."

  31. gummitch Says:

But, seriously, Palin would be exactly the sort of shallow candidate that the modern GOP loves: George Bush in a (designer) skirt. All they see are shiny objects and they'll be willing to pretend that none of the stupid comments existed, that the $150,000+ wardrobe was overblown by liberals and that she'd bag all the Religious Right votes without ever needing to deliver anything. The "Republican intellectuals" (ha!) will be convinced they can manipulate her.

And Palin isn't going to stay in the box. She got a taste for the Big Time and she'll be spending the next few years trying to figure out how to build an organization -- made up of the same pundits currently dissing her.

And for all you cocky Liberals, don't forget who managed to get elected (more or less) in 2000 and 2004.

Before this goes too much further, we may want to watch what happens in AK. She has eroded her own 88% approval rating and between her and the Stevens-Young debacle, may not survive the political wolves in her own state.

Let's just hope she gets a lucrative offer from Faux No_Nooz and dyes her hair blonde, and become part of the Faux Blonde Bimbo Brigade(tm).

    Or....Jeb Bush?

It could happen. Unfortunately Barack could be set up for a colossal failure thanks to the Bushites. Not only does he have to deal with a collapsing economy, healthcare, Iraq, Afghanistan but also Russia, Pakistan and China. If there is another *planned* terrorist attack on our soil by the puppet masters we could very well see the Bush name back in the news.

  75. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Ok, I'm tired of the Palin thing. I've enjoyed it as much as the next person, but I'm done with it. The more she's attacked, the more defensive the far-right is about her. Tonight, while cruising through Fox momentarily, I watched Laura Ingram (substituting for O'Reilly tonight) going over the top with her defense. Enough already. Let's let her fade into the woodwork (like where's Joe the Plumber since Tuesday night?) Hopefully, Stevens will lose in Alaska, Sarah won't be able to install herself as his replacement in the Senate, and hopefully, that's the last we'll hear of her.

  76. superid Says:

Sounds about par for the course to me.

  77. misshusseinmolly Says:

I suspect that Sarah will have faded into the woodwork and will be well on her way to being yesterday's news by the time the 2012 campaign gets ramped up.

After all, look at Giuliani. He was a novelty for awhile, too.

Why would Obama choose a hawk in favor of a strike on Iran as his chief of staff ? This is hard not to see as a betrayal of the progressives who worked on his behalf to win this election .
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I understand your concern but Obama has to fight of the Repubs HERE. Rahm brings a lot to the table as far as effectiveness in working with Congress and overall organizational ability a HUGE plus in a COS. Also it sends a message to the GOP. IF you want to get along fine but if you want a war bring it on. Rahm is a tough streetfighter in the political infighting arena. I am thinking THESE are the reasons he chose him. We will see. IF we start acting all froggy on Iran THEN it will be time to stand up and scream. At this point that kind of speculation is just begging trouble that isnt here the COS doesnt MAKE policy the president does. The COS is in charge of the nuts and bolts of getting that policy done. I think Obama at this point deserves the benifit of the doubt.

  111. Shayne Says:

Thom Hartman said some things today about how it's all Romney's people doing the smear of Palin telling the facts to the media. They were hired by McCain after Romney dropped out and his people were the folks who put all the money into Prop 8 and he's planning on running in 2012. He wants to get rid of Palin as quickly as possible so his folks are spilling the beans.

  112. bogglesthemind Says:

    John Kerry Says:
"Mc Cain had NO chance of winning UNTIL Sarah was selected ..."

You really have no idea what you're saying here, do you? Your statement here alone should tell you what a disgrace those people are.

But you see it positively. Amazing!

  113. Mr. Evil Says:

I of the impression that most of today's republicans are delusional. But now I know most of them are just dumb.

  114. bigeugene Says:

Sooooo.....let's do the math. 60 percent of the 48 percent of Americans who are Republicans want Palin to run! So a whopping 28.8 % of the country wants her to run (well, some of us Ds might want her to run to)! Still, I hope they convince her to!

  115. Andre Alessi Says:

You know, in four years time, wingnuts will be digging up threads like this and holding them up saying "See? The liberals wanted her to run! That's why we lost! It's all their fault!"

Then they'll move on to some other poor shmuck.

I'm a bit skeptical about the poll results, though-these polls tend to represent a "top of the head" reaction. Of course they're going to name Palin now. But in four years?

After all, four years ago noone would have predicted there would be a Democratic black president-elect with the middle "Hussein".

Additionally, it's conceivable (if not exactly likely) that Palin will get over her aversion to learning and, you know, actually pick up enough general political knowledge not ot end up sounding like a complete Dubya when asked softball questions.

  116. nicetouch99 Says:

I'd love to see Sarah Palin run for president. I love those Tina Fey SNL skits. Her running mate could be Joe the Plumber. More great fodder for SNL plus we'd see Obama / Biden win again.

  117. MrSquirrel Says:

I'd very much enjoy watching the other Republicans rip her to little shreds in the 2012 primary season. Bring it on, Sarah!

  118. MrSquirrel Says:

John Kerry: Mc Cain had NO chance of winning UNTIL Sarah was selected and whether you libs want to a dmit it or not, they would have won had it not been for the economy! You all lucked out BIG TIME but now e all have to live with the “change”!!

    God help us all!!

Whew! I'm sure glad you used bold type for this important message! I might have missed out on your whiny paranoid ignorant panic!

So what you're saying is, the candidate your party selected in the primaries, beating all other contenders, had NO chance of winning, without being propped up by a governor that almost nobody south of the Arctic Circle had heard of before?

And it was only the economic crisis that saved us from Palin's overwhelming charisma winning the day? Are you serious? We should feel lucky, darn it, that McCain/Palin's incompetence on the economy was so glaringly obvious, that otherwise they would have won on their merits? What was her strong suit, then... foreign policy? Civil rights? Help us out here.

Support Palin in 2012? This makes me even more convinced that republicans share a common flaw. Going forward this flaw will make them more susceptible to defeat.

As we have learned from the 2008 presidential election, Americans have jettisoned the GOP and the neocons. We are tired of their dirty tricks, their support of the rich and their contempt for average (income) Americans. We are tired of their fear mongering, their blind support for each other, their manipulation of the devoutly religious and their group-think.

Republicans share a trait shared by ants. A single ant is not very scary or formidable. However, put a large number of them together and you have something to worry about. A few of them have learned that most repubicans are followers; they need a leader and they desire to be followers - it is easier this way.

Republicans are also like a football team of less gifted athletes who, because of their coordination, can hold their own against most opponents. But, when faced with a less organized team of gifted athletes, are trampled because the talented athletes are too smart and too capable, sending the republican athletes into disarray and to the showers with a huge and embarrassing defeat.

In short, repubs rely on the organization provided by those out for personal gain and cannot adjust - they just keep doing the same old stupid shit. To them I say, keep it up.

  121. Badger Says:

I think Sen. McCain had two impossible and conflicting tasks, in his bid for the Presidency.

He had to shore up his base , which was lukewarm and skeptical, UNTIL he nominated Gov. Palin. The fact that the polls showed McCain TIED with Obama after the conventions, showed me that she did , in fact,
Secure and Energize the Pro-life, pro-gun, Evangelical base for the McCain/Palin ticket.

Sen. McCain's second task was to convince Moderates and Independents that he was NOT George Bush, and that his election would be a CHANGE from the Unpopular Bush Policies.
McCain hoped that Gov. Palin would bolster his Maverick persona, but she did just the opposite.

She instead reminded voters of the Intelectually challenged and Ideologically Partisan President Bush.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I do not recall Barack Obama swearing that he would filibuster any FISA bill containing retroactive immunity. I recall him changing his position on the FISA bill but never claiming filibustering.

Seems like 99% of dems. want her to run too, but I wonder if the GOP will even remember her name in 4 years. She's so damn wacky I can't believe that ANYone takes her seriously, now or for the future.

  137. Danko Ramone Says:

I agree completely that the way to all but guaraNTEE an Obama second term is by having Palin as an opponent. Hell, the only way he'd NOT be elected in that situation is if he refused to run.

But on a serious note...why? Why on earth would any Republican WANT her to run? Apart from the fact Barack could win even if he vacationed instead of campaigning. It makes no sense. She's demonstrated herself to be an idiot, a liar, corrupt, theiving...and that's before one debates the potential nuttiness of some of her beleifs.

There are intelligent Reublicans. There are intelligent Christians. As much as one may disagree with them at times, they're still sane, decent people. What it is the genetic flaw that forces them to willingly abandon all good sense and rationality and have ANY support for this nitwit at all, espeically now, when it's not a semi-required by-product of supporting McCain?
