U.S. companies cut 240,000 jobs in October. The nation’s unemployment rate spiked to 6.5 percent, the highest since March 1994. The numbers are worse than economists had predicted.
The election of Barack Obama “is already beginning to shift the political ground in Iraq and the region,” the New York Times reports. With Obama’s election causing obstacles to fade, Iraqi Shiite politicians and a Bush administration official are now indicating that “a new security agreement about American troops” could be completed faster and possibly ratified as early as the middle of this month.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) “is pushing his party’s leadership to expel Sen. Ted Stevens from the Senate during this month’s ‘lame duck’ session.” DeMint, “one of the most conservative members of the Senate, is said to be angry with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for tolerating a convicted felon in the GOP caucus.”
Yesterday, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) “took a first step” toward “finding out what punishment he may face” for backing John McCain for president, by meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV). Reid said that nothing had been decided, although an aide revealed that he was “leaning toward removing Lieberman as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.”
“The word most used to label George W. Bush’s presidency will be ‘incompetent ,’ historians say.” “Right now there is not a lot of good will among historians. Most see him as a combination of many negative factors,” said Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton.
President-elect Barack Obama is said to be considering Lawrence Summers and New York Fed Reserve President Timothy Geithner for Treasury Secretary. “Democrats are split” over the two choices. “They’re all qualified, that’s the good news, unlike if you look back at the Cabinet of this past president – not always the case,” said one Democratic member of Congress.
New accounts call into question the Georgian assertion that it was acting defensively against Russian aggression this summer. Instead, they “suggest that Georgia’s inexperienced military attacked the isolated separatist capital of Tskhinvali on Aug. 7 with indiscriminate artillery and rocket fire” that put civilians in harm’s way.
A strategy review by the Bush administration is likely to recommend “to the incoming Obama administration that the U.S. push for further expansion of the Afghan army as the surest path to an eventual U.S. withdrawal.” The strategy review, which began in September and is expected to be presented in December, is meant to be “a kind of road map for the next administration.”
And finally: Barney, President Bush’s beloved Scottish terrier, may look cute and friendly, but watch out. Yesterday, Reuters reporter Jim Decker reached down to pet Barney, who then bit him. Watch the incident here. The LA Times writes, “Maybe Barney, a Scottish terrier, was fed up with liberal media bias.”

I would have used “moron”, “idiot” or “dry-drunk-drooling-dolt”, but “incompetent” works too.
November 7th, 2008 at 9:09 amWow — the ThinkFast news shows the Republicans (and neoconservatism in general) are gasping.
DeMint is pushing to get Ted Stevens kicked out.
Lieberman is finding out the consequences of marrying up with the other side.
Historians are labeling the Bushney administration as “incompetent”.
Unemployment continues to climb.
Georgia, the country who could do no wrong in the eyes of the neocons, is found to have been doing wrong.
And even Barney bites.

The election of Barack Obama has been historical in that it’s the first time that a person of color has been elected POTUS. This is a given. But I found a number of other record making things about this election — either the first ever, or the first in quite awhile:
1. First African-American elected president — EVER
November 7th, 2008 at 9:32 am2. First sitting Senator elected president — since 1960 (John F. Kennedy)
3. First non-Southern Democrat elected president — since 1960 (John F. Kennedy)
4. First candidate from Illinois elected president — since 1864 (Abraham Lincoln)
5. First time two sitting Senators elected president and vice-president — since 1960 (John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson)
6. First time Missouri voted for the losing candidate (assuming the state goes for McCain) — since 1956, when they voted for Adlai Stevenson
7. First president whose last name ends in a vowel (other than “y” or a silent “e”) — EVER
8. First president born in Hawaii — EVER
9. First president with a child under the age of 10 at the time of the election — since 1976 (Jimmy Carter and 9-year old daughter Amy)

November 7th, 2008 at 9:41 amWhile the MSM does stories galore on Rahm Emanuel, the progressive website gives no information. This came from Newsweek:
Rahm Emanuel has been described as a street fighter with a killer instinct—as explosive, profane, wired and ruthless—sometimes as a compliment, sometimes not…
Emanuel has relished raising his hacked-off middle figure at his foes. In conversation with almost anyone about anything, Emanuel uses the F word like a sergeant in a World War II motor pool.
As a Democratic Party official, he once sent a pollster who was late delivering polling results a dead fish in a box. Old Clinton hands still laugh about the night after Bill Clinton won the 1992 presidential election. In his book, “The Thumpin’: How Rahm Emanuel and the Democrats Learned to Be Ruthless and Ended the Republican Revolution,” Chicago Tribune deputy Washington bureau chief Naftali Bendavid writes that, as about a score of them sat around a picnic table mushily declaring their love for one another, Emanuel picked up a knife and called out the names of different politicians who had “f–––ed us.” After each name, Emanuel would cry out, “Dead man!”—and stab the knife into the table.
From the American Prospect:
Emanuel is a brawler. He’s legendarily tough and effective and ruthless. Hes the type of guy who makes enemies, then makes lists of his enemies, then makes lists of his enemies’ friends, then makes lists of how they’ll pay. If you thought the Obama administration would be all about bringing people together and would simply make sad faces when stubborn congressmen refused to come to the table, this is a clear sign otherwise. If good feelings don’t suffice, bareknuckle politics will happily be employed.

As of today, no one has giving me a true intelligent answer.
If abortion is such a big issue, why was nothing done between 2000 and 2006 when the Republicans were the majority in the Senate, the HOR, the executive branch, and the Supreme Court?
So far, my mother’s answer was because they’re too many liberal judges in the Supreme Court! My braincells failed to synapse on that one.

_______
Because Republicans don’t ACTUALLY want to do anything with abortion – it’s their ace in the hole, a wedge issue that works every time to fire up the base and get their obedient sheep to vote for them once again. If they actually succeed in overturning Roe, they’d all be out of jobs.

Katy, I cut and pasted the paragraphs from Haaretz. If you have a concern about their punctuation, please contact their editorial staff.
well… it doesn’t seem that you did… i can’t find your phrases in a search of that article you linked to…
but, i beg your pardon – i did get the 2 men, barak and barack confused…
oops. sorry.
November 7th, 2008 at 8:04 pmKaty, no problem. Mistakes happen.
Sometimes news organizations update stories during the day. Below are the first two paragraphs. The first one is the same. But the second went from a summary comment to a quote from Defense Minister Barak. So it did change:
Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Friday told visiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that Israel would not rule out any course of action to prevent Iran from attaining nuclear weapons.
“Israel is convinced Iran is trying to build a nuclear bomb,” Barak told Rice,” adding that Jerusalem “is not taking any option off the table, and we don’t recommend that others take any option off the table.”
