MSNBC extends Olbermann’s contract.

By Amanda Terkel on Nov 10th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

MSNBC extends Olbermann’s contract.

TV Decoder reports:

olbermannflag1.jpg Keith Olbermann, the anchor of “Countdown,” will remain at MSNBC through the next presidential election season, the cable news channel announced Monday afternoon.

The announcement came less than two years into Mr. Olbermann’s current four-year deal. MSNBC essentially tore up his February 2007 contract (reported to be worth up to $4 million a year) and wrote a new one, according to two employees with knowledge of the agreement. The new contract is valued at about $7.5 million a year, one of the people said.

Mr. Olbermann will continue to anchor “Countdown” and co-host NBC’s “Football Night in America.” Reinforcing Mr. Olbermann’s value to MSNBC, the network said he would “play a prominent role” in “all major news events.”

Appearing on the View today, Olbermann admitted that he didn’t vote last week.

Oh boy, that's going to piss off Billo. He might just demand that the Justice Department investigate they way he demanded they investigate the Nielson Ratings (since he's losing to Keith regularly).

  2. Uncle Ho Says:

I LOVE Olberman's commentaries. Keep up the good work.

  3. deebaser Says:

I didn't vote either. I was afraid that if I stepped into the voting booth this 'Bradley Effect' that everyone on the media seemed obsessed with leading up to the election would take hold of me and force me to vote for John McCain against my wishes.

I didn't feel like being psychicly violated in the booth and revealed as a subconsious racist thankyouverymuch.

  4. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

One thing that has always bothered me about comparing Keith's ratings (MSNBC) to O'Reilly's (Fox) is that it is not comparing apples to apples. If it were, I think we would find that Countdown is creaming O'Reilly on a regular basis. The problem is that most cable and satellite vendors carry MSNBC in their premium lineup whereas they all carry Fox in their regular lineup. That cuts down on the number of people who CAN watch MSNBC, so it isn't an apples to apples comparison.

  5. spearNmagicHelmet Says:

now this guy is a maverick.

  6. Bea Says:

Hmmm, I kind of get it why he doesn't vote as a symbolic gesture, but I still disagree. I'd never give up my right to vote, (perhaps if I earned 4 million a year I would, who knows...). I like Olbermann, of course, I'm a liberal, but not voting...Argh, I don't know, it just doesn't feel right.

  7. EnnuiDivine Says:

Keith Olbermann: the perfect cross between Edward R. Murrow and Howard Beale.

Pompous as all hell, but dead on and honest.

More power to him for the next 4 years.

  8. liberal traitor Says:

    Dammit, Keith. Not voting? Grrrr...

  9. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

I missed it. Why did he say he didn't vote?

    - - I hate Olbermann's commentaries but I loved Ben Affleck's. Keith grates on me after a while and I prefer Maddow's take on virtually the same subjects.

  11. Leftside Annie Says:

As much as I love him, that not voting thing sucks a rock.

    Shame on you, Keith!!

  12. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

O'Racist and Freeperville are imploding at this very moment.

    Amen.

  13. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

Ok, I read about it and I agree, it sucks. Shame on Olberman. He just lost some respect from me. I tell people I know "If you don't vote, you have no right to complain about what goes on in this country", and the same applies to him!

  14. misshusseinmolly Says:

It's possible that Keith O was taking the journalist's vow of neutrality to the extreme (although Keith will never be considered politically neutral with a television program like Countdown -- not in the way that Walter Cronkite was considered politically neutral).

Or perhaps Keith figured that his state was going blue anyway (he lives in New York). Still, that's a lousy reason, and he should be ashamed of himself if it's true.

Or it might just be that time and scheduling got away from him.

If he's going to reveal that he didn't vote, it would be interesting to know why (I can't open the link here at work).

Oh -- and congrats to KO for his contract extension. I look forward to seeing him for years to come.

I second that. I lived Texas for 10 years and knew my vote didn't count, but I still did my "civic duty" and showed up every 2 years to vote. Keith, Keith, Keith....

  21. Leftside Annie Says:

Daryll, don't you know that it is illegal to marry those blow-up dolls???

  22. Curlew Says:

That is the best $7.5 million MSNBC will ever spend.

  25. avchavis Says:

Way to go! That's good news.

  26. IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says:

His being on The View and announcing he didn't vote is probably why he is having a special comment tonight.

  27. Fritz Says:

    Yay, Keith!

  28. Uncle Ho Says:

Keith, as much as I love your hard-hitting, cut-to-the-chase videos,
    about your not voting.
    Shame, shame, shame, on you.

  29. Uncle Ho Says:

clarification; my last post was referring to Keith Olbermann, my apologies to Keith H. for any possible misunderstanding.

  30. Uncle Ho Says:

Daryll; who gives a sh!t about what you think. Now crawl back under your rock like a good little chickenshit chickenhawk.

  33. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

I'm a huge Olbermann fan, but I'm very disappointed that he didn't vote. I know there are journalists who have made the decision not to do so because they never want to appear partisan...but come on! Keith NOT partisan?

  34. gummitch Says:

Keith really disappointed me. Football? That's awful.

  36. Badger Says:

Many of the Items which appear on Countdown also appear here on TP.

    Anybody else notice that?

I don't read too many other Blogs, but I get the feeling that everybody is feeding off of everybody.

  37. Shayne Says:

Maybe he doesn't vote because he doesn't like the two party system where outsiders don't stand a chance. Many here feel the same way. I suspect he'll tell us why if we listen.

  38. TeleMan Says:

    Olberman didn't vote?

Today's Worst Person in the World!

    /snark. I like Keith.

  39. Game of Life Says:

Congrats Keith. Surely you deserve more than what limpydic is making.

  40. wisedup Says:

Keith didn't vote?....good for him. In his position, he let US decide who WE want. We did just that,so republic cons lose big time...get use to it MSM.

  41. Marie Says:

    Tim Russert never voted either.

  42. Tim Vaculik Says:

Olberman is simply the biggest pompous ass on TV today, bar none.

He obviously deserves a role in the new administration for all his hard work!

  43. knowbuddhau Says:

Two things happened today pertaining to KO. 1) He revealed that he doesn't vote, simultaneously revealing himself to be a huge hypocrite: can't complain or criticize if you don't participate--absolutely no excuse for someone who wants to comment of our politics. 2) I learned not to listen to a word he says.

  44. knowbuddhau Says:

PS: you call these "comments?" I've read better on bathroom walls. 'Juvenile' would be a step up. Now I remember why I hardly ever comment here. Last time, I complained about all the dim-witted personal attacks and surfeit of name-calling. You're still the same!

Think Progress is a good source, I read it everyday. The comments don't rise to the level of bad graffiti.

Yeah, had Olbie voted your vote wouldn't have counted and who knows what would have happened! Good old Keith let us decide. ;)

I watch Olbie and MSNBC to get the liberal perspective just like I watch Fox to get the conservative perspective. He does good commentary as long as he controls his tendency to go off on psycho tirades. It's almost embarrassing to watch him when he can't maintain self control. His Murrow aspirations take a beating then. He looks incredibly uncomfortable in the photo above. They really shouldn't have forced him to hold the flag.

  46. DNFP Says:

Keith, I have a suggestion for what to do with that flag you're holding.

Does anyone have any doubt that Rachel Maddow (or Randi Rhodes) actually put their money where their mouth is???

Compared to the other View hosts, she is very intelligent. That is what makes her the most attractive woman in the NE, besides my wife.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

How would you know? You are far too stupid to even RECOGNIZE intelligence. You are a clear moron RupturedRetard. Spare us your idiotic guess at who is and who isnt intelligent. The only thing you know is that she agrees with you more. On that alone I would consider her the STUPIDEST person on TV

I'm flattered! Only problem is you insulted someone else last week with the SAME words! Turns out I'm not so special after all. hahahahaha

    Moron

  52. DaTruth Says:

I have always admired and respected Keith Olbermann. He's one of the few people out there that tells it like it is. Ultimately, if he voted or not, that was his decision. Just like in a casino, in this 'pseudo-democracy' no matter who you vote for the 'house' always wins. We're tricked into believing we still have a democracy. Right after a candidate wins he has to play it according to the rules of the elite no matter what he said he would do to get elected.

  53. EugeneDebs Says:

    Tim Vaculik Says:

All you morons ever do is regurgitate the old stale talking points you were told to believe. That doesnt deserve originality. Repitition is so ingrained in your programming that I am just trying to communicate in your native language and penetrate your primitive hierarchial culture.
