Via TPM Election Central, a new Rasmussen poll shows that the election of Barack Obama has had an immediate impact on many African-Americans’ views of America. The poll, taken two days after Obama was elected, found that “the percentage of black voters who view American society as fair and decent jumped 18 points to 42%.” The percentage saying that America is still unfair and discriminatory fell from 64 percent in early October to 46 percent today.

Amazing how one genetically pre-disposed group will act with prejudice against another. I wonder how many gay people voted for Obama in California? Once people get over the color and sexual preference issue, then people can be judged by their actions instead of pre-conceived groupthink.

Well there is a term going back to Poland in the 1980s called “Solidarity”. What it meant is that all repressed and prejudiced groups had a common thread, and backed each other up.
Obviously in California modern blacks don’t recognize this.
November 10th, 2008 at 10:13 pmA bit off-topic but blaming the African-American community for the passage of Prop 8 in California is wrong at so many levels, it’s hard to know where to even begin. It gets under my skin and I need to reply.
From a demographic standpoint, African-Americans represent only about 7% of the total population in California. Even if all of the adults in the African-American community showed up to vote, they still couldn’t have, single-handedly, passed Prop 8.
What’s more, most outside of California have the (wrong) idea that the state is “liberal” or “left-leaning”. I don’t know how they manage to ignore that we currently have a Republican governor.
Just to show you how socially conservative California actually is, take a look at this map (by the way, it matches very closely the results of the presidential election in the state).
As you can see, votes against Prop 8 and for Obama were concentrated in coastal counties, mainly in the SF Bay Area. Almost all the counties in the Central Valley and the Sierra voted the opposite: Those are very conservative communities (by the way, those are primarily either Caucasian or Hispanic communities, not African-American or Asian).
The biggest mistake that gay rights activists committed, in my humble opinion, was take inland California for granted. California is not the Bay Area -which is like a cultural, economic bubble, very different from the rest of the state.
Most communities outside of the Bay Area are very conservative; they vote reliably Republican. There is no way they would have noted against Prop 8 -unless gay rights activists mounted an effective campaign, which they didn’t. I was surprised they were surprised Prop 8 won. I was saddened, but unsurprised.
November 10th, 2008 at 10:15 pmAfrican-Americans don;t understand that Obama is simply a slightly tamer Bush who will not lead anyone out of poverty or to any “promised land.” Nader was right about him…

Their struggle during the Civil Rights movement, was over skin color, not sexual partner.
The feeling of betrayal in the gay community is, quite frankly, ridiculous. It is no secret that prominent leaders in the Californian African-American community absolutely reject the parallel that gay rights activists try to draw between their current struggle and the Civil Rights movement.
African-Americans do not see it under the same light. At all.
November 10th, 2008 at 10:21 pmNeither do Hispanics, by the way, and there are a whole lot more Hispanics in California than there are African-Americans.
November 10th, 2008 at 10:23 pmSome Americans will never let the pass go away both black and white. What I saw as a new generation of Americans who have left racism behind. There were many mitigating factors, the 2 main ones being the Religious votes, and the failure on the part of the No on 8 campaign to get thier message out. The Bay Area is still very Progressive, it’s the rest of the state that needs to catch up.

gays have since the beginning of evolution have been stomped and killed. That is why I think the most positive aspect of Obama as president is finally a bi-racial person elected. Now female, gays, and latinos. But, I do not want to see the white race driven out of our culture either.

Murder rate is pretty high there, but I do like the Bay area, as I lived in California for 15 years from the late 60s to 1985. Personally, I think handguns should remain legal, and maybe that would reduce the murder rate, especially in Oakland. Either way, a massive social change is needed after 8 nightmare years, but I am not sure Obama is that “Change”, since he thinks gay marriage should be banned.
November 10th, 2008 at 11:46 pmOh my! What strange theories pop up when simple minds try to fathom matters beyond their wit? Why are nuts of all persuasions afraid of President-elect Obama?
He’s an intellectual. It’s really that simple.
And it’s been so long since the wackos have had to interpret the words of an intellectual leader that they have all gone bug-scat crazy because Obama won’t give literal answers to hypothetical questions or base current stances on future events. They are terrified by a person who says, “I don’t know, I’ll let you know when I’m in office and able to deal with it“.
Morons! They are so dependent on dogmatic adherence to their own particular delusions that they can’t even comprehend someone who refuses to promise a similar dogmatism. Since most of them seem to be turning on each other, because the differences in their individual delusions don’t stand up under the scrutiny of failure, I’ve been enjoying the imminent splintering of the old Jerry effing Falwell Religious Radical Right. When the biggest remaining block are those who think they would have fared better with Bible Spice at the top of the ticket? The GOP is in trouble.
Sadly, there will always be some who are delusional enough to be dangerous but, they may lose the monolithic lock that gave them political power beyond their actual numbers. The Bachmann-like idiots are dwindling in influence if not numbers and a couple years of effective governance, despite their screeching protests, should thin the herd even more.

You seem unable to separate opposition to same-sex marriage from homophobia and/or religious fanaticism.
Californians already extend the right to form domestic partnership to same-sex couples, which allows them to enjoy the same benefits heterosexual married couples do.
Adoptions by gay couples are also legal in California, and have been for quite some time.
By and large, Californians are not homophobic and have a laissez faire attitude towards same-sex couples. There are exceptions, of course. You can find haters anywhere.
In other words, it was not the idea of two people of the same sex, living under the same roof, adopting children, having a family, extending benefits to each other (health and otherwise) that brought out the No On 8 vote, but the thought of calling all of this by its name: Marriage (don’t ask; it doesn’t make any sense to me either.)

Let’s try this one more time. Minorities don’t see the Civil Rights movement and gay rights activism under the same light. Every time the two are equated by gay rights activists they manage to offend someone, because too many people still see homosexuality as a lifestyle one can choose.
They don’t see this as a matter of “solidarity between oppressed groups”. You might as well talk to them in Greek; you would get the same result.
I do not want to see the white race driven out of our culture either.
Wha? There is a reason why African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, are lumped into one category: Minorities.
November 11th, 2008 at 12:19 amOops! In my post above I should have said “that brought out the Yes On 8 vote”.
(it got really confusing at some point; my wife and I had to each constantly remind other whether a ‘yes on 8′ vote was against, or in favor of gay marriage)
November 11th, 2008 at 12:23 amrhf, Obama did not defeat prop 8. Try again, remember Hillary isn’t running now.
November 11th, 2008 at 12:43 amAnyone whose view of America was NOT boosted by Obama’s election (in light of the race issue) is indeed a bigot.
November 11th, 2008 at 12:48 amrepublicans hate facts Says:
While they didn’t make up the majority of voters they did make the difference between it passing and failing thanks to the Obama turnout.
And I still insist that they didn’t. African-Americans represent such a small percentage of the population in California (around 7%) that it is very unlikely a mass vote from their community could effectively swing an election either way.
This whole “blame the Blacks” mentality stems from the false hope gay activists had that the African-American community would understand, relate because of the Civil Rights movement.
They could not have been more wrong. And deaf, and blind to boot: It is a very well known fact that not only African-Americans do not understand gay rights as an extension of the Civil Rights they fought so hard for, they are offended by the idea. Prominent figures in the African-American community have been very vocal, for quite some time now, in their opposition to same-sex marriage.
In light of all these facts, I was surprised that opponents of Prop 8 were not more aggressive at getting their message out, not only in and around the Bay Area, but in the Central Valley, Southern California, and the Sierras. For an account on why Yes On 8 won, click here.
Again, it was not necessarily homophobia. It was a lack of a good effort on the part of gay rights activists to make their case to a public who is largely against using the word “marriage” to describe same-sex domestic partnerships.

I speak Greek and I don’t know if I could use it to apply any semblance of logic to any of Brainiac’s (or JK’s or CB’s) posts here. Prop 8 had a lot of funding provided by the MORMON morons (they have issues with marriage being between a man and his multiple teenage wives, you know) which is why the scales tilted on that proposal so it did not pass. On all the news channels that are not Fox.
Brainiac, you use no facts, provide no links, and your “logic” defies logic.

Um, no.
It was pro-8 lies, like mandatory teaching of gay marriage in schools. An outright lie the pro-8’s were pushing, that many corpro-centric media refused to cover.
To say it was because of the ineptness of the anti-8 forces, overlooks a huge reason: the “Christians” lied, repeatedly, and weren’t called on it by most of the media.

By Hussein Kadhim and Leila Fadel
BAGHDAD — Three or more explosions Monday ripped through a busy shopping district in northern Baghdad’s Adhamiyah neighborhood, at killing at least 28 people and wounding at least 68.
North of Baghdad in Baqouba, a 13-year-old girl walked to a checkpoint of Sunni Muslim paramilitary members and detonated explosives. She killed herself and at least five others, including a leading member of the U.S.-backed paramilitary. At least 15 people were wounded.
The bombings indicated an increasing trend of violence across the country.
The U.S. military put the death toll for the Baghdad bombings at four, but witnesses said they saw dozens of dead bodies and a bus full of people on fire.
It was unclear whether three or four explosions ripped through the Adhamiyah shopping district, where professionals, laborers and students were eating breakfast before heading to work. Witnesses said they saw two car bombs followed by two roadside bombs, while police blamed a suicide bomber and two roadside bombs for the fatalities.
The blasts, which lasted 15 minutes, were timed to coincide with the breakfast rush at Abu Wael’s restaurant. Policemen, laborers, merchants and students were eating eggs, meat and potato patties and drinking tea to start their day. Many didn’t make it out of the restaurant.
A bus and its passengers burned in the street, which filled with flames and smoke. Witnesses said that only two passengers survived.
Another day in Bushland.

Obama voters did so for practical and racial reasons, and third party voters did it for moral and conscience reasons. McCain voters did it for race and fear.

The election of Barack Obama didn’t change my viewpoint of America. Rascism, classism, sexism and homophobia continues to exist. November 11th, 2008 at 9:36 amLawmakers join call to overturn Prop. 8
SAN FRANCISCO – More than one-third of California’s lawmakers are adding their voices to the chorus calling on the state’s highest court to overturn the prohibition on same-sex marriage approved by voters last week.
Forty-four members of the California Legislature filed a friend-of-the-court brief Monday in support of a lawsuit seeking to invalidate Proposition 8 on the grounds that voters did not have the authority to make such a dramatic change in state law.
The brief argues that the gay marriage ban improperly usurped the state Supreme Court’s duty to protect minority groups from discrimination. Proposition 8 overturned the court’s May decision that legalized same-sex marriage.
Senate President Pro Tempore Don Perata and Assembly Speaker Karen Bass are among the signers.

Georgia Congressman Warns of Obama Dictatorship
BEN EVANS | November 10, 2008 07:46 PM EST |
WASHINGTON — A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship.
“It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he’s the one who proposed this national security force,” Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. “I’m just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may _ may not, I hope not _ but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism.”

Sheesh… the man isn’t even in office yet, and the wingnuttery are already attempting to rachet up the hysteria. Funny, you’d think they would have been as equally upset when Botch joked about being a dictator, or expanded warrantless wiretapping in this country, or went down the torture road, or expanded the power of the Presidency to new, uncharted heights, or politicized the DoJ… but no. I wouldn’t go as far as to call Prop 8 opponents “inept”. I do believe they miscalculated two things: The willingness of the Christian churches to lie and distort, and the support they could get from the public at large. Our friend Brain From Planet Whatever is a good example: He keeps prattling about “two oppressed groups” when -obviously- African-Americans don’t see it that way.

Now I hear that Obama’s dreams of going after the dead guy, Osama Bin Goldstein, may be thwarted because of financial concerns. Probably a good thing since nobody ever wins in Afghanistan from The Mongols to the British to The Russians.

_________________________________________________________
Most of your post is rather fanciful stuff churned out by someone who’s been spending too much time reading the wingnut sites, and I won’t spend time rebutting most of it.
But I found your assertion of “whites are a minority in most large cities” to be worthy of some research.
I looked up the 20 largest cities in the United States (this would be “cities” — as in everything within a city limits — not metro statistical areas, which include suburbs). And then I looked up the racial makeup of each of the 20.
Here’s what I found. In 8 of the 20 cities, white non-Hispanic people made up a clear majority (the highest being Phoenix, with 71.1%). In 9 of the 20 cities, white non-Hispanics made up the largest minority (between 42% and 49.9% in all cases) with NO group being a majority. In only three of the cities (Detroit, Memphis, and Baltimore), were white non-Hispanics a minority with another group being a majority (in all three cities, that majority was African-American).
So you were technically correct when you said that “whites are a minority” in most large cities, since that’s the case in 12 out of the 20 largest. But your statement is a bit misleading when you consider that in 17 out of 20 of these cities, whites do make up the largest racial group.
As to your somewhat pompous statement about people with a conscience voting third party, I would just like to say that my conscience is working just fine thankyouverymuch, and I proudly voted for Obama.
November 11th, 2008 at 3:44 pmNow, I know you are intoxicated, much the same way many of you were supporting GW Bush at 91% after 9/11. However, the team Obama is putting together is an Imperialist kleptocracy, run by the same people who embezzled $850 billion from YOUR pockets, allowed illegal wiretapping, want Oil drilling, and Preemptive Perpetual war….for starters.
You are waiting for Universal Health care, end to war, and jobs. well, first things first, and that is Obama pleasing his corporate, Zionist, and military masters. There should be ZERO left for We The People after these priorities.
yeah, yeah, I know, you’re all “progressives” and “Liberals”, and “Feel” good about “The Black Face in a High Place”, but he appears to be about to be used by the same crew that Bush had in and advising him. How disingenuous to African-Americans and that you would play right along with this.
You all loved it when I came here and posted links abd facts bashing Bush and McCain, and even taking on Republican posters. But when the reality comes out, and facts are put in your face, you refuse to accept them, and from some who just curse, to some that post lame “facts”, you have done ZERO to prove people like myself and a handful of other independent thinkers incorrect. I have no further use for this site, and I don’t want to spoil your party, but if I’m wrong, and Obama goes against his corporate masters, and helps out common folk, then I will come back and apologize. But if I’m correct, will the people here admit they were wrong?
I am expecting Obama in a few months to remove a mask and underneath will be Ronald Reagen.
