Rep. Broun on comparing Obama to Hitler: ‘I regret putting it that way.’

After assaulting Barack Obama’s national service proposals as Hitler-like, Rep. Paul Broun told WGAC radio today: “I regret putting it that way.” He added, “The point I tried to make is that he is extremely liberal, he has promoted a lot of socialistic ideas, and it just makes me concerned.” Both of Georgia’s Republican Senators — Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson — distanced themselves from Broun’s earlier remarks.

BROUN: I meant to have my eyeballs spinning around in my head, with slobber dripping off my chin, while I said it. My bad.

“The point I tried to make is that he is extremely liberal..."

As opposed to being extremely conservative and continuing to run our country as far into the dirt as the conservatives have? Republicans, especially Broun, have proven they have nothing of substance to offer this country. Well, except maybe ridiculous analogies.

  4. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Will Congressman Paul Broun receive the same level of denunciation and condemnation from Republicans as they showed Congressman John Lewis, when he correctly, and from personal experience, compared the hate-filled talk at McCain & Palin's rallies to what he heard during the civil rights struggle. And the hatred back then led to people dying.

  5. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

He added, “The point I tried to make is that he is extremely liberal,

But, but, but we are a "center-right country"!!!!!

Oh, man! I thought he was a Reaganite this week! It's so hard to keep up with the spin.

In addition to being an idiot, Rep. Broun is an idiot. That's of course when he is not being just plain stupid. When will people start electing oficials who do NOT have their head someplace where the sun does not shine?

No wonder the GOP is/has become a regional party centered on middle to deep south. Take a look at a map in todays NYT that shows the voter shift from 2004 to 2008. the only places where the GOP picked up votes from 04 to 08 was in the south along a line that tracks along the Appalachian Mountains. The people there tend to less educated, make less money and White. Some of the interviews with these people who voted for McCain were very telling.

  14. EugeneDebs Says:

So the point he tried to make was he is extremely liberal by comparing him to Hitler when Fascism is an EXTREMLY RIGHT on the political spectrum? I swear you can get opinion whiplash listening to these wingnuts if you arent wearing your proper personal protective equipment

  15. misshusseinmolly Says:

Lemme see -- the guy is "extremely liberal", so therefore he's comparable to Hitler.

    WTF????

  16. misshusseinmolly Says:

If Broun thinks Obama is an "extremely liberal socialist", he should have seen Franklin Roosevelt. The proposed policies of Obama don't come anywhere close to what Roosevelt did in his first 100 days in office to start getting us out of the Great Depression.

Would Broun compare Roosevelt to Hitler? Well, since Broun clearly has no idea what the definition of either "liberal" or "socialist" is, he probably would.

I see what he's getting at. Obama is extremely liberal. You know. Like Hitler.

  19. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Yeah, he's exactly like Hitler, that's why he wants to keep old Liebie around, has R. Emmanuel on his staff, and stumped for the Jewish folks vote in Florida-gonna keep an eye on them, don't cha know ;)

  20. Zooey Says:

This is how far Broun (and trolls) read the Wiki entry on Hitler:

Adolf Hitler (20 April 1889 – 30 April 1945) was an Austrian-born politician who was elected to lead the National Socialist...

    ** sound of squealing brakes**

    LIBERAL!!!!

  21. barfly Says:

The correct comparison, is to a grouping of blood-sucking ticks, realizing the dog they've been feeding upon is dead.

They thrash, trying to withdraw, but cannot, because they are burrowed too deep. So they slowly die, futilely scratching at the dead hound they have attached themselves to.

    Drink deep, Broun...

  25. barfly Says:

  27. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

They haven't realized that dog has been dead a long time, they just keep stoking it's fur and saying "this is the best dog ever." But everybody else can smell its stench a mile away.

They haven’t realized that dog has been dead a long time, they just keep stoking it’s fur and saying “this is the best dog ever.” But everybody else can smell its stench a mile away.

The stench of their "dog" carries farther than that.

The "surge" isn't, in any way, addressing this forseen development (from McClatchy):

Kurdish expansion moves threaten stability in northern Iraq

BASHIQA, Iraq — Kurdish forces have detained Murad Kashtu al Asi three times in the isolated district of Sinjar in Nineveh province. First, they beat him and accused him of being a terrorist and a member of the Iraqi Islamic Party, a mostly Sunni Arab political party. The second time, they detained him for several hours, he said.

The third time, they hit him in the face with the butts of their guns. "If you leave alive this time, then work with us or we will kill you," he said his captors told him. He was held six days and released Sunday after U.S. forces intervened on his behalf, he said.

The Kurds never charged him with a crime and even called him their "brother." His offense was working with an Arab party in territory that the Kurds covet. "We don't want you to be with Arabs anymore . . . if they controlled the area (the existence of the) Yazidis will end," Asi recalled.

Asi is a member of the ancient Yazidi sect, most of whom consider themselves Kurdish. In the complex and often violent landscape of Iraq, the community, estimated at a few hundred thousand, is at the center of a tug of war over land between mostly Arab Iraq to the south and mostly Kurdish Iraq to the north.

Three minorities that populate the villages near the city of Mosul in Nineveh now find themselves under heavy Kurdish pressure: the Yazidis, whom some Muslims and Christians disdain for revering Malak Tawas, the peacock angel, which other religions see as devil worship; the Shabaks, a small ethnic group of Sunni and Shiite Muslims who claim Persian descent; and the Assyrian and Chaldean Christian communities, who speak Aramaic, the language of the biblical era.

    [. . .]

It's a huge story. At least 5,000 words, or more. This is just a small sampling.

  30. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Religion, all religion, is the most divisive political mechanism ever developed by mankind, friend barfly. I'm agnostic, but I can see the lure of atheism when it come to politics, that's for certain. So glad our fore-fathers put in the separation of church and state within the Constitution, and so sad that others can not see their wisdom in doing so.

these idiots always say the same meaningless crap, like “The point I tried to make is that he is extremely liberal..." It's so opinionated... Conservatism will soon be a fringe movement, just like the Amish.

  32. SkepticRising Says:

The real winner part of Broun's little rant (btw, who spells 'Broun' that way - like 'Hou nou broun cou'? wtf?), anyway, in his statement, Broun said something about how Obama was going to form a "private" security force, like the gestapo, as strong as the military and it was going to answer directly to him, lions and tigers and bears, oh my. Um, Brouny, dude - the whole military will already answer directly to him. That's what the commander-in-chief thing means. Really, don't be any more of a moron that you have to be, okay? Moron.

  33. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Phatbenetar, I live in Amish land, they are a whole lot less fringe than you'd think. Ever heard of Rum Springa? And they don't threaten to blow people up or press their ideals on outsiders, either.

  34. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Oh, and phatbenetar, I don't know if you saw my post on the other thread, but thank you for reminding me how completely off topic it had gotten.

I suspect that what Rep. Broun regrets is, not what he said or how he said it, but rather that his statements have backfired. Even Georgia's Republican Senators seem to be too far to the left for Broun. We should find out where Joe the Plumber stands on the issue, and for that matter, Joe Lieberman as well.

Every time a braindead right-winger makes this claim, we must demand examples. Otherwise this meme will go on and on.

If that scenario is genuinely what Obama had in mind when he made a reference to a "civilian national security force" last summer in a speech, I would be against it, too.

But we don't know that's what it will be. In fact, we really don't know any details of this plan.

So you might want to ratchet the self-righteous indignation down a notch until Obama announces something with a little more substance (as Broun should also do). Once he has something put together and gives us some details, then we can dissect the h*ll out of it. Until that happens, there's really nothing there that we can praise or pan.

Heck, I'd even be happy if any of the "braindead right-wingers" can give us an accurate definition of the word "socialism". This is something they all avoid like they're playing a game of dodge-ball.

The ones who do take a stab at it generally can't do it without mentioning Hitler, which is rather hilarious when they are attempting to conflate socialist with liberal at the same time.

I didn't realize that Hitler was a liberal.

And if being a Marxist / Socialist / Communist makes one a liberal, why wasn't Stalin campaigning for freedom of speech ?
