In last week’s election, Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss (R) received more votes than his Democratic challenger Jim Martin but fell 0.2 percent short of the 50-percent-plus needed under Georgia law to win the election. Both candidates are expected to be headed for a runoff election next month.
Last night on Fox News, when asked why he wasn’t able to “close the deal” with Georgia voters on election day, Chambliss said that because of Barack Obama, there was a “high percentage of minority vote” and that his campaign wasn’t “able to get enough of our folks out” to vote:
COLMES: Why do you think you’ve been unable…[to] close the deal with the people of Georgia in terms of what happened on Election Day?
CHAMBLISS: Well, listen, we have, for the first time in the history the our state, a 30-day advanced vote period, and let’s give the Obama people credit. They did a good job of getting out their vote early.
There was a high percentage of minority vote, and I am tickled to death that as many Georgians as did examined their right to vote. That’s what make our election process the envy of the whole free world, but we weren’t able to get enough of our folks out on Election Day.
Watch it:
Apparently, when Chambliss refers to “our folks,” he’s talking about Georgia’s white voters. He added that it’s going to be a “challenge to get them out in the runoff” but that his campaign “look[s] forward to that challenge.”
In fact, Chambliss has used racially loaded, us-versus-them rhetoric in this campaign before. Just prior to Nov. 4, Chambliss bluntly warned his white base that “the other folks are voting,” adding that the “rush to the polls by African-Americans early” has “got our side energized early, they see what is happening.”
However, it seems that Chambliss’s base wasn’t as energized as he thought.

November 11th, 2008 at 2:09 pmFor what he did to Cleland alone makes him the biggest scumbag in the scumbag Repug Party. I just hope enough Gerga voters recognize for what he truly is and will not want this assklown to represent their state any more.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:09 pmSorry for the typos in #4, entering from my Blackberry.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:11 pmChambliss, representing the rich white people, and the stupid white people and the racist white people. Wow, what a constituency.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:12 pmThis man probably got into his post through election fraud in the first place ! There is no longer enough hate to energize the GOP’s shrinking base !The days of diebold elections and close races are over Sax .
November 11th, 2008 at 2:14 pmNow it remains to be seen if by controlling both houses and the executive branch the democrats can remain more viable than the republican have managed to become !
OMG! I hope Chambliss loses the runoff election – what a rascist pig.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:14 pmSo what does he mean by “our folks”? Surely he can’t just mean white people, since Georgia has plenty of white people, and presumably many of them voted.
No, I think he means “white, bigoted, hateful people who are idiotic enough to vote for me” — and there may be fewer of them. But apparently still enough to force a run-off.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:15 pmAre we half way through the process of the death of the 2 party system ……….Stay tuned .
November 11th, 2008 at 2:16 pmthink OBAMA can or will go down to help martin?
wish he would… not sure if he should, given his new status…
November 11th, 2008 at 2:18 pmGood, let this man talk some more.
Let’s make obvious for everyone that, when Republicans say ‘we’ or ‘us’ they are talking about racist, bigoted Caucasians -the White Supremacy crowd.
The more this twit and others like him talk in those terms, the quicker their party will become the Whites-only party, and their hatemongering, race-baiting can finally slip into irrelevancy.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:21 pm“Our Folk”, you mean the soon to be permanent minority repukes? Those Folks?
Conservatives are on the way out, not so trendy anymore, get used to it.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:21 pmBy ‘our folks’ he meant all of the over 70 crowd who are still holding on to the racists values they grew up with.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:25 pmNo veterans in Georgia. Maybe a few of us should visit the area during the runoff.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:27 pmSaxby’s campaign against Cleland was the sleaziest and shameful I’ve ever seen in my entire life. What’s even more galling is, it worked.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:29 pmDraft-dodging Chickenhawk Chambliss smears triple-amputee Vietnam vet Cleland. There is NO justice in this world.
He’s gonna find out he is SO LAST CENTURY!!!!!
November 11th, 2008 at 2:30 pmBTW- I think that POS ought to be the guest of honor at a blanket party of vets.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:33 pmFair honest elections in Georgia? Not with Diebold Corporation “counting the votes” in secret, with their own secret software, with not even a paltry papertrail. Chambliss stole his Senate seat in 2002, electronically. That’s how the GOP got their Senate “majority” in Jan. 2003 after electronically stealing Senate seats in Georgia and Minnesota.
Twenty-two (22) states in the 2004 election had thousands of Kerry votes flipped into Bush “votes,” electronically. The GOP electronic vote flipping and electronic election stealing machinery is still in place for use in 2010 and 2012. Return to hand-counted paper ballots as they do in Spain, Italy, France, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia and in most of the richer countries in the world.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:35 pm“That ad was very fair,” Chambliss said, “that is a lightweight ad.”
And you are a lightweight Senator, you Saxy thang…
November 11th, 2008 at 2:39 pmCan’t wait when he is voted our in the runoff election. His hate and fear mongering, along with the “our folks” is sooooo yesterday.
Bye, bye, bigot!
November 11th, 2008 at 2:47 pmMaybe, could it just possibly be getting out the base and still appealing to enough non-base to get a good percentage of their vote too ?
Let’s face it, Chamblis has done everything but drop the N-word. That alienates not only people of color but also a lot of other people too.

Ahhh yes ‘politically correct’ the mating cry of the racist moron. To idiots like Tracy it isnt enough that racists have the RIGHT to spew their racist garbage. NO they ought to be able to do so without being CALLED on their racism. When those WITH power spew out racism and act in a churlish manner to the true psychophantic conformity worshippers they should have some unfathomable right to do so WITHOUT being called on their racism and churlish behavior or it is THEY who are the victims. November 11th, 2008 at 3:18 pmAny ‘Us’ (read: white person) who casts a vote for this nut in the runoff is making a very clear statement. Whites of principle must reject this sort of senselessness.
There isn’t a minority in the race and he still can’t help but race bait. Truly disgusting.
Senate Ethics anyone?
November 11th, 2008 at 3:20 pmChambliss should not even be in Congress. Max Cleland’s 2002 defeat by Chicken-Hawk Chambliss was arranged by Diebold, everyone knows it, including Chambliss. Pre-election polls gave Cleland a 5 percent lead, exit polls gave Cleland a 5 percent victory, but Chambliss won by 7 percent in an election that was entirely conducted by Diebold Corporation. When Chambliss refers to “his people”, he really means his army of Christian Hackers.
November 11th, 2008 at 3:20 pmBy the way, not being from Georgia, and not being black, who exactly is “your” base?
Mullet head sporting, cheap beer drinking, generic cigarette smoking, trailer trash wife swapping, confederate flag waving, Larry the Cable guy luving, Donnie Bakers?

November 11th, 2008 at 3:21 pmChoke on this, Chambliss, you racist bastard.
You too, Tracy.
November 11th, 2008 at 3:24 pmThere will be a runoff election on December 2 – I’m hoping we can make this racist cracker a private citizen then.
November 11th, 2008 at 3:27 pmOuch! It’s tough duty being a troll these days. Hey stupid troll! Don’t worry. We will let you share in the benefits of sanity returning to the White House. November 11th, 2008 at 3:31 pmAs someone who live in a county in GA that voted 75-25 for McNumbnuts, I can tell you right now Martin has less than a snowball’s chance in hell in winning the run-off. Saxby has been running non-stop negative ads since a week before the election, and the Cleland ad is lightwieght compared to his ads of today. The flames of bigotry that Shambliss stokes every day are even worse now that Obama has won. Without the early voting the “hidden poll tax” of the current voting system in GA unfortunately insures a Shambliss victory. Nothing would bring me greater joy than to see this racist, low life, chicken hawk, chickenshit lose , but this is Georgia and I just don’t see it happening.
November 11th, 2008 at 3:32 pmOh Please, please, please, let Parodyll the Failure (aka cRaptureReady) post and defend this POS!

November 11th, 2008 at 3:44 pmThis article is interesting, in that it speaks to the decline of the South being central to national politics any more. The ignorance and racism demonstrated by those who were interviewed is truly astounding. I lived in Alabama for a short time back in 1968, and in Louisiana for a year or so in 1972. I thought they were outdated and still fighting the Civil War then….I guess they still are.
What may have ended on Election Day, though, is the centrality of the South to national politics. By voting so emphatically for Senator John McCain over Mr. Obama — supporting him in some areas in even greater numbers than they did President Bush — voters from Texas to South Carolina and Kentucky may have marginalized their region for some time to come, political experts say.

November 11th, 2008 at 3:49 pmThe way to take on Saxby is to focus on his ties to W and all his Unitary Executive BS and his votes “supporting” the troops during Rumsfeld’s “you go to war with the Army you’ve got” time period when there was no adequate body armor, no protected vehicles, no sense of what they were doing. He is a pathetic, shameful politician.
He’s bringing McCain to Cobb County (Newt’s old stomping grounds) this week the local paper says. Palin would cause the rednecks to rejoice, but she’s not committed to come yet. Obama’s sending aides, but we hope he’ll show his face. He endorsed a Blue Dog for the coastal seat, so who knows what will happen.
Donate to Jim Martin. He’s a good man.
November 11th, 2008 at 3:52 pmFritz we might be throwing money down a rat hole. Let’s see if Obama pays a visit and any other heavyweight from the Dems. I think it’s a long shot, but McCrappedhispants and the Alaska Disasta are already schedule to blight the landscape so I’m hoping maybe some Dems are going to show up and refresh the air.
November 11th, 2008 at 3:53 pmAgreed, Lungman424. Best we can do is vote and keep our fingers crossed.
November 11th, 2008 at 3:56 pmYeah, Zooey. “Tetchy” like a naked man in a zipper factory.
But seriously, I have been struck by the peaceful vibe from the celebratory crowds. So long as Chimpy leaves quietly I think we will be able to change course without the mob violence that so often comes with change.
November 11th, 2008 at 3:58 pmI live and vote in GA-10th district. Saxby Chambliss can be defeated. Obama’s campaign is requesting supporters to open their houses once again for the volunteers he is mobilizing to descend on Georgia. Rumor has it, the President Elect Obama and former President Bill Clinton will personally hit the trail with Martin. McCain is coming for Saxby. Perhaps Palin? So Georgians – Vote Dec 2, 2008 for Jim Martin for Georgia Senator.

November 11th, 2008 at 4:14 pmI have lived in small town Georgia pretty much my whole life. I have also always been a liberal democrat and proud of it. I don’t like my Senators assuming that all white voters are Republican any more than I like the rest of the country assuming that all white voters in southern states are redneck crackers.
I am clearly not one of Chambliss’ “people.”
That said, all of you out there have a little faith that not all of us whites in Red state America are Red state people. We are with you. So please don’t put us all in that category. I have been for Obama since his speech at the 2004 convention, and will go to the polls again for Jim Martin. And a lot of people like me will do the same.

November 11th, 2008 at 4:50 pmI’m here in GA, too. Sissy Shameless [aka Chambliss] most likely stole his seat in ‘02 when our state went 100% Diebold voting machines. I fully believe Jim Martin should have gotten far more votes than he did. Our Rabid Republican SoS Karen Handel looks more & more like Katherine Harris & Kenneth Blackwell. [Hmmm - KKK?]

November 11th, 2008 at 5:04 pmEven more than just read that HuffPo article, Georgians should print out Shameless’ record of voting AGAINST the Troops [Jim Martin is a Veteran who actually SUPPORTS the Troops] & tape to mailboxes; leave in grocery carts or on windshields – etc.
Maybe we can educate some of the brainwashed before runoff time.

November 11th, 2008 at 5:27 pmLook, I think Chambliss is about as shameful as any of the nasty fringe of the GOP for the way he attacked Max Cleland, but this is a little too much.
If you watch the video and hear the comments in context — and do so without trying to hear racial undertones — it seems much more likely that he’s referring to Republican voters. He said “they did a good job of getting out their vote early,” then laments that “we weren’t able to get enough of our folks out on Election Day.” He’s just talking about Dems and Reps.
There are plenty of reasons to vilify Chambliss, but this isn’t one of them and people who make something out of this look as partisan and foolish as Reps do when they attack Dems when there is no there there.

I don’t know ralph. I have asked Tracist5 this question and he has always refused to explain. He usually just goes off on a tangent about being an architect who builds leaky medical centers.
So, I came up with my own theory. The only thing I can figure is that Tracy asked each of his friends if they were black until one of the said yes, and punched him in the nose for being an ashhole.
November 11th, 2008 at 5:51 pmshoeless, let’s be fair to Tracist. he doesn’t actually build leaky medical centers, he just designs them.
It’s the non-union labor he hires that actually builds the damn places.
November 11th, 2008 at 6:05 pmdon’t you mean “dam” places?
November 11th, 2008 at 6:13 pmthis is a very poor example chosen to illustrate your point. Chambliss has said racist tings in the past, and I hope that he is soundly defeated in the runoff. but it seems to me you’ve pulled together quotes from different parts of this conversation and inappropriately linked them. this is intelletually lazy. find the correct quote or don’t make the post.
November 11th, 2008 at 6:16 pmis poor spelling intellectually lazy?
November 11th, 2008 at 6:18 pmHe means the “damned places”…. a “dam” is a man-made barrier to control water levels ;-)
November 11th, 2008 at 6:20 pmAhh the dam thing was a joke…. as in they are holding back water
November 11th, 2008 at 6:25 pmWell, a dam place is more likely to be leaky than a damned place, which probably would be too hot to have much accumulation of moisture…
November 11th, 2008 at 6:31 pmThe only damned thing around here is our troll Tracist, the leaky architect…
November 11th, 2008 at 6:48 pmWhat Martin needs is campaign money. All of you who would love to see Chambliss go back to his cave – please send anything you can to Martin – every dollar counts in this!!!
November 11th, 2008 at 7:32 pmI hope the Democrats pour everything thy have into defeating that dimwit Chambliss in the run-off.
Mr. Chambliss is owned by three special interest groups: The Zionists have one third, the KKK has another third, and that backwoods mountain family (the bad teeth circle) that we met in “Deliverance” own the other third.
November 11th, 2008 at 8:35 pmIt defies imagination that McCain would even CONSIDER going down to campaign for this toad. After the lies and slander this chickenhawk draft dodger heaped on Max a REAL DISABLED WAR HERO, and after VOTING AGAINST Veterans Issues REPEATEDLY – it would seem that Daddy/Granddaddy McCain would BOTH reach out of the grave to snatch “junior” by the scrota and drag him away from Georgia . . . . has McCain no HONOR LEFT?????
November 11th, 2008 at 10:08 pmWow – thinkprogress certainly likes to tie anything that might be construed as racist into actual racism… I mean a lot. I have no idea if this guy is actually racist or not (Well, from past statements he has seemed to be), but the comments you’re citing aren’t persuasive. It more resembles him assuming minorities will vote democratic (as most people do assume) and him saying “our folks” was pretty obviously directed towards republicans.
I hate to say it, because I very much enjoy reading most stories here, but the hyper-sensitive racist button thinkprogress employs is getting out of hand.
November 12th, 2008 at 1:05 amchaking,
IF Chambliss had meant Democrats, might he have used the word Democrats instead? THAT is the difference you’re failing to parse. The fact remains, he was comparing the minority turnout and “his folk” lack of turn out… Who’s this mysterious “His folk” that would counter the minority turnout if NOT non-minorities?
Go ahead, defend the man’s inability to articulate what he meant to say with what he actually DID say… Has he stepped forward to do so, himself?
And for TracyTroll_5…
… I see _6 in your future!
.
November 12th, 2008 at 1:20 amMax – I don’t follow. There was an historically high turnout of minority voters who normally vote democratic. He cites this historic turnout as an advantage to the democrats. He then says he wishes “our folks” had gotten out more on election day. It takes a whole lot of stretching to turn that into a racist remark and not just leave it at the political remark it was. He was saying he wished republicans turned out in larger numbers. It’s obvious.
Oh yeah, you say: “IF Chambliss had meant Democrats, might he have used the word Democrats instead?”
Well he said “let’s give the Obama people credit.” No he didn’t say democrats, but it’s implied. I’m sure you wouldn’t have felt the same way if Obama had said, “let’s give the McCain people credit.” You seriously would think he meant “white people” and not the republican party/republicans?
Look, you simply cannot call people racist on a whim. I’m dumbstruck by having to argue this.
November 12th, 2008 at 2:01 amHow about this – When was the last time thinkprogress noted racism from someone other than a white person? Is that racist?
November 12th, 2008 at 2:12 amMy point is that it sure seems as if comments that shouldn’t be construed as racist are only construed that way because of who they are. While there certainly is room for listening to someone with their background in mind, it’s prejudiced (by the very definition) to listen seemingly expecting racist remarks instead of with an open mind. If we are to take on true and factual reporting, we shouldn’t use prejudice as a basis of an article. If someone besides Chambliss had said what he said, I think we can agree it wouldn’t even take on the guise of offensive.
Being from the area, I can vouch for the coded language perfected by people like Chambliss. His voting record speaks another coded language.
The majority of the current republican party’s base is truly racist. It amounts to about the 27% that approve of bush plus a few more percentage points. They’re not all here in the south, though – as we clearly saw on videos from states all throughout the country.
November 12th, 2008 at 2:17 amThe Gop sponsored & McCain campaigns have been overwhelmingly toxic with racism, slurs, lies and hate. What they have done is nothing less than anti-American and verging on inciting riots. I’ll be glad when the current incarnation of the republican party completely disintegrates.
We need to bring back the Fairness Doctrine. I’m sick of hearing pundits & “journalists” on TV laughing it all off saying “oh, it’s just politics.” No – it’s not just politics. It’s a sad detour into the Dark Side.
November 12th, 2008 at 2:26 amBefore anybody gets silly … I meant the Dark Side of the Force.
November 12th, 2008 at 2:36 amWhy does AbleCluster always stop after the first three?
November 12th, 2008 at 8:43 amchaking,
November 12th, 2008 at 12:04 pmChambliss “implied” through his use of the inclusive term “our folk” that his ‘folk’ were more than just Republican. However, what you inferred was different than what many others did. If he meant Party or Republicans, he might have used either word instead of hiding behind ambiguous language that is historically linked to racism.

“We need to bring back the Fairness Doctrine.”
Code for eliminating free speech.
Why don’t you support free speech and the let the market decided on what talk radio is broadcast?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
That is just stupid. There is NO FREE SPEECH ISSUE involved in the fairness doctrine. The Supreme Court has already ruled on this. Read the Red Lion decision and stop parading your ignorance. WE OWN THE AIRWAVES. There is supposed to be a public service obligation for those who make obscene buttloads of cash OFF OF OUR RESOURCE. It is a democratic decision how that works. All those who seek licenses know of the obligation if they dont LIKE it they can go into the dry cleaning business. Just because the screechmonkeys have told you to think and regurgitate this doesnt mean it isnt stupid. It is.
November 12th, 2008 at 2:09 pmAnybody ever see “Kinfolk” with Liam Neeson and Patrick Swayze…they were (playing hill folk) real Rhodes scholars, compared to the majority of the inbred white trailer trash who make up the GOP base
The only 12 year old virgins in Georgia are the ones who can out run their fathers and brothers..(through the trailer park)
November 12th, 2008 at 3:15 pmthe thing that is really starting to bug me about this site is the blatant hypocrisy. I hope Chamblis goes down hard and his previous words are strong evidence of his racist views … but comments like #98 are so common, so overlooked, and so defended here that it blows my mind. not funny. not cute. not helpful grow up!
November 12th, 2008 at 4:58 pmI live in Georgia, outside of Atlanta.
The number of people who still believe in George W. Bush and Saxby Chambliss is scary. “W” window stickers far outnumber all others and there are countless campaign signs for Saxby Chambliss in yards, even in my own neighborhood. Trying to get through to people like this is pointless. I have always liked Max Cleland ever since he spoke at my “alternative” high school graduation in 1974. Saxby Chambliss is a POS, but you’ll be hard-pressed to make anyone here believe it.
November 12th, 2008 at 7:22 pmOk Tracy you are just ignorant
Lets start with THIS astonishingly ignorant statement
To tell PRIVATE TV or radio station that they MUST provide a counter view point is TOTALLY against the 1st amendment.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.
REALLY here is what the SC says EXACTLY TO THAT ARGUMENT
From the Red Lion decision
Just as the Government may limit the use of sound-amplifying equipment potentially so noisy that it drowns out civilized private speech, so may the Government limit the use of broadcast equipment. The right of free speech of a broadcaster, the user of a sound truck, or any other individual does not embrace a right to snuff out the free speech of others.
There is nothing in the First Amendment which prevents the Government from requiring a licensee to share his frequency with others and to conduct himself as a proxy or fiduciary with obligations to present those views and voices which are representative of his community and which would otherwise, by necessity, be barred from the airwaves.
Thats pretty clear you idiot. YOU are talking nonsense. THERE IS NO FIRST AMENDMENT ISSUE HERE which the Red Lion decision says DIRECTLY
Now lets move to THIS particularly ignorant statement. My GOD you are ignorant
There is NO “public” obligation that the FCC forces on private broadcasters. They pay their taxes to use the airwaves and that should be the limit of their “obligation” to the public.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>..
In exchange for obtaining a valuable license to operate a broadcast station using the public airwaves, each radio and television licensee is required by law to operate its station in the “public interest, convenience and necessity.” This means that it must air programming that is responsive to the needs and problems of its local community of license.
That from the official FCC website.
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/decdoc/public_and_broadcasting.html
Ok what more do you need. Clearly you are bone ignorant and often spout off when you have NO idea what you are talking about. You just spew out the idiocy you were told to believe that conforms to the delusional fantasies that you make up in your head. Here is a clue you desperatly need. YOUR STUPIDITY DOESNT DEFINE REALITY.
So to recap YES Red Lion said DIRECTLY that the fairness doctrine does NOT violate the first amendment there IS no first amendment issue involved it is a resource management decision. And YES the FCC says DIRECTLY that there is a public service obligation that comes along with the license. It is very clear that the ONLY right you are concerned with is the RIGHT of corporations to MAKE MONEY. The right of ownership of the airwaves means nothing to you. For you ignorant wingnuts the right to make money trumps all other rights. Well that is YOUR delusions. We DO have a right in the say in how OUR RESOURCE IS USED.
It was also particularly STUPID of you to say we sold the airwaves that NEVER happend they BELONG to us now. The deal we made was they can use our resource to make their money but they have an obligation to operate their shows in a way that performs a public service and if they DONT their license does NOT have to be renewed. Your money is GOD philosophy is pathetic. It might seem socialist to YOU that since WE own the airwaves we ought to have a say in how they are used but to me it just seems like ownership rights. MY GOD you are ignorant
