Barone: Media trashed Palin because ‘she did not abort her Down syndrome baby.’

baroneweb.jpgSpeaking before a roomful of academics in Chicago yesterday, U.S. News and World Report’s Michael Barone claimed that “the liberal media attacked” Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) during the presidential campaign because “she did not abort her Down syndrome baby.” “They wanted her to kill that child. … I’m talking about my media colleagues with whom I’ve worked for 35 years,” Barone said. Politico reports that “[a]bout 500 people were in the room, and some walked out.” Barone did not dispute his remarks, saying he “was attempting to be humorous and, as many in public do, went over the line.”

    Regarding Republican “humor”:

Watching them blow their brains out in public – now THAT’S funny!!!

  3. DRxJ says:

    I love it.
Another, in an ongoing episode of…”I was only kidding. Kind of.”

It cracks me up that someone can make such a dum bass remark (Macaca, anyone?), and then state he/she was only joking.
Except it wasn’t funny. Except it wasn’t appropriate. Except it wasn’t even remotely factual.

You, Michael Barone, deserve my patented “mucking foron” award!

  4. hussein toasterhead says:

Well, I guess it’s time to own up. Barone is totally right. I did not vote for McCain/Palin because she didn’t abort that little runt. And all her other babies, for that matter.

That’s right, folks – you heard it here first – we progressive liberals are all pro-abortion!

ABORTIONS FOR ALL! NO BABIES FOR ANYBODY! DEATH TO HUMANITY!

A right wing sick fck… which just proves one more time… wing nutters are humor deficient. They shouldn’t even bother to try being funny.

  10. DRxJ says:

By the way, kudos to those who walked out.
    We need more of that.
Making unfounded, baseless, dumb accusations should be treated as such.
mAnn Coulter. Weiner Savage. Benn Gleck. OxyBreath. All should have lost viewership/audience along frickin’ time ago.

Well, at least Oxybreath was fired from his dream job(ESPN NFL commentator) for being the bigot that he is.

Sarah Palin did just fine trashing herself. She didn’t need, nor did she get, any ‘help’ from the media as Mr. Shitz-for-Brains alleges.

I hope someone tackles Barone, holds him down & injects him with SARS…

WHAT? I’M *JOKING!* It’s my attempt at humor! Barone *obviously* LOVES jokes like that! he’s a kidder, that one.

Now, about “fixing” the brake lines on his car…

    Ba-dum bump.

I am sick of hearing about this crap. So what if she didn’t abort her Down Syndrome baby. I just had a wonderful little girl about 5 months ago. Doctor asked my three time if I would have the stupid test. Three time we told him no because the answer didn’t matter. I’m a flaming liberal. Hasn’t got a damn thing to do with anything. Doesn’t mean I am anti-choice. It means that it didn’t matter. I mean really. These people need to get over themselves in patting her on the back for not having an abortion. It’s a pretty sick view of Americans to think that this isn’t the common answer.

Since when did Michael Barone morph into Rush Limbaugh? The guys in the white jackets need to come for this guy. Gee, you don’t think there were any problems with Sarah Palin’s credentials nor failure to give interviews nor vicious attacks on the opposing candidate nor ridiculous shopping spree that violated campaign finance laws which caused the media write negative stories above her? No that certainly is not possible. The negative press for Sarah Palin must be due to the son with Downs Syndrome (if that child truly is her son, we don’t know for sure without the medical records which she refused to release).

  18. AverageTodd says:

I mean, I love free speech and I protect his right to say this but…

The problem is that words can be dangerous. There are people in this country the really, truly, honestly believe that we have just elected a terrorist for President of the United States. Unfortunately, joke or not, this is only going to fuel an ignorant anger. Also, the idea that pro-choice means abortion on demand (or demanded abortions) is pervasive and hurts the discussion for all parties.

  19. misshusseinmolly says:

Who knew that Barone could trash liberals, babies, the media, AND humor in one fell swoop?

It’s this brand of “humor” by conservatives that caused the Half Hour News Hour to be such a resounding success…

Repuglican humor = say something so stupid, people just have to shake their heads and laugh.

  21. unbelievable says:

IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says: WTF is wrong with these people?

America has proven itself to be left-of-center, so the Republicans cannot run on the issues in which they support failed and obsolete ideologies (Trickle Down, anti-woman, war mongering, etc.) and win. Therefore, they must ad hominem attack, lie and fear monger. Unfortunately that little trick only seems to rouse their insane 20% base who really have no lives of tehir own and get off on putting other people down to feel better about themselves.

I expect Democrats to be in power for a very long time, as long as they don’t do something stupid (which is oddly a tough act for them).

    __________________________________________________________

Many “flaming liberals” do exactly what you did in the same situation. It’s called choice. Conservatives have a hard time grappling with the concept that “choice” also means choosing to have a baby instead of aborting it. Which, believe it or not, happens most of the time, even among “flaming liberals”.

  29. ennealogic says:

That’s the most convoluted excuse for losing an election that I’ve ever heard. These people have sour, twisted minds, and they are struggling to find ways to blame the overwhelming GOP loss on the (dirty word) liberals.

It was no joke, Mr. Barone. But it’s not the straw you are grasping for, either. Try again, this time a little closer to home.

  30. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Wow…just wow. How could he consider saying something like that to be humorous. This guy is seriously sick.

  31. MapleStreet says:

His remark doesn’t even make sense. To be humorous, there has to be a grain of truth somewhere other than in your own deluded, scrambled, pithed, brain. (Look at the picture, doesn’t he look like a pithed frog in Bio class ?)

Oh, and when I asked my Ditto head friend about Rush Limbaugh’s hate, his response is that Rush is humorous and you’ve got to get the humor.

Barones too stupid to admit the right wingers lost largely due to their own incompetence.

  34. paleolib says:

I have two reactions to Barone’s nonsense:
    (1) The media didn’t trash Palin. She trashed herself by claiming to be a foreign policy expert based upon alleged proximity to Russia, by demonstrating her ignorance of U.S. foreign policy when asked about the Bush doctrine, by having no clue about any Supreme Court case not called Roe v. Wade and by giving a series of hate mongering stump speeches that exposed her as churlish and vindictive;
    (2) Instead of taking cyanide in reaction to Obama’s convincing victory the wingnuts (Barone, Congressman Broun, Rush Oxybaugh, Sean Insanity, etc.) seem to have ingested massive doses of some potent hallucinogens because their tenuous grip on reality has loosened even further.

  35. Abu Ben Hussein Leporello says:

The party of Lincoln has been suffering from intellectual stagnation, at best, and is suffering some form of virulent, raging insanity. Lemming-like they rush towards the Cliffs of Insanity! The sad part is that the sane folks in America have to be subjected to their rants and exposed to their lunacies as the levels of lunacy continually escalate. There is No Bottom to this cesspoole either.

Of course, I educated him, so he changed the subject to Obama not saying the Pledege of Allegiance.

After getting him to say that he does not consider me a terrorist or a Muslim, I informed him that I don’t say the “Pledge”, nor do a lot of other people.

I pledge allegiance to the flag. The flag? Really? You want me to swear allegiance to a table cloth? And what’s with the fascist need to either swear allegiance or be labeled a traitor? And of course there’s that ‘under god’ thing…

He states that a lot of people died for that flag.

No, they died for my right not to pledge allegiance to it.

  40. larkohio says:

Frankly, the decision to have Trig was up to Sarah and Todd Palin, as it should have been. I am sure that Trig will bring them great joy.

The media did not want her to abort her baby, they wanted her to be competent enough to assume the presidency if the need arose. Clearly, she was not competent. It had nothing to do with her child.

  41. LibertyLover says:

What conservatives don’t get, and presumably never will, is that no one likes terminating a pregnancy, even liberals. I have never met anyone ( liberal or conservative ) who thought abortion was anything more than a very difficult choice. A choice that is not to be considered lightly. Even those with special needs children, most of what they need or want is information. All women want and deserve the right to an informed choice about whether or not to continue a pregnancy — what that might mean for their bodies, their health, their families, and whatever other challenges that bringing another being into this world might pose.

I think that most pro-choice and anti-choice people can agree that callously using abortions as a form of birth control, or terminating a pregnancy because of the sex of the fetus, is not the most ideal of situations and would like to try to discourage women from doing so. But liberals tend to want to keep the availability of the option to safely terminate a pregnancy, but focus more efforts on education, improve access to birth control and other means of prevention and allow access to emergency contraception in cases of rape and incest. “Safe, legal, and rare” is something we can all strive for.

I am not stating anything that hasn’t already been said before, but it is frustrating that conservatives still throw out the meme that liberals think that special needs children need to be aborted when nothing could be further from the truth. All liberals have ever wanted is for the women to be able to make that choice for themselves, and not to have ANYONE else make that decision for them.

As for Barone’s comments, ignorance runs deep.

  42. Fred says:

  44. Xisithrus says:

Dont think we dont know your agenda Barone. Its the same negativity, the same demonization of Americans for self-serving ends.

I’ll thank you to exclude me from your warped imagination Barone and next time you get the urge to paint people into groups of your making – stick yourself in it.

  45. ralph the wonder llama says:

Let’s get real here, folks; Barone wasn’t “attempting to be humorous”. He was saying exactly what was on his mind, and when he got called on it, he decided to play the old right-wing “it was a joke” card.

It’s worked before, right? But there is no way a statement as hateful and ignorant as that could have been intended to be “humorous”.

Ironic thing is, your co-worker is probably a Christian. And what does the Bible say about worshiping idols?

Now, being a proud Christian myself, one could argue that pledging an allegiance is not the same as worshiping. I don’t.
I, myself, honor those that served (and died) for our freedom by choosing whether to participate in the pledge of allegiance or not.
I can not think of any better way.
And I get really annoyed by those that feel it’s required (like it’s some sort of high ranking law) and you’re anti-American if you don’t.

  49. kasinca says:

Can Barone prove that the down syndrome baby is not Sarah Palin’s grand daughter? I think that was the suspicion that was raised. I never read anything suggesting that she should have had an abortion. Reichwingnuts are liars first, wingnuts second.

The hate that she created is her symbol and video tapes don’t lie. Barone may have been covering for the fact that Palin never released her medical records.

‘Cause I’m thinkin’ that while Ms. Congeniality was skippin’ from college to college, the press really never got to talkin’ about why it took so long for her to get a diploma. Or why she skipped from school-to-school so often.

All I’m sayin’ is that if it had something to do with her “right to choose”, then those evangelists she pals around with may not be so hot to back her candidacy in 2012 (wink wink). Could it really be just a coincidence that this Joe the Plumber character actually lived in Alaska, also?

I’m not saying anything, just sayin……
