Speaking with Jay Leno last night, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) expressed his deep admiration for his friend Joe Lieberman. “I have never known a finer man than Joe Lieberman,” McCain gushed. Asked whether Lieberman’s support for McCain might cost him his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, McCain said, “I hope not,” adding, “on national security issues, he’s really, really good.” Watch it:
While a number of Democratic Senators have expressed their hope that Lieberman will not be kicked out of the caucus, many of them are mum on whether he should retain his gavel. “We aren’t going to referee decisions about who should or should not be a committee chair,” said Stephanie Cutter, a spokeswoman for the Obama transition team.
Check out ThinkProgress’s new report, “Joe Lieberman: The Progressive Who Lost His Way.”
Hopefully john McCains endorsement will be all that’s needed for Joe to lose his chairmanship .
November 12th, 2008 at 10:27 amrandi rhodes was discussing this yesterday… she may be mistaken, but according to her, LIEberman being chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, means that any charges against OBAMA will start there… LIEberman will be able to block and hinder any progress by throwing up charges against the president constantly…
and, knowing his “friends”, that is to be expected…
witch hunts forever!
November 12th, 2008 at 10:28 amHe does not deserve his Chairmanship, out of disloyalty to the caucus. Give it to a deserving member.
As for voting, let him vote his conscience. IF he is as progressive as Mr Reid and other believe, they have no worries. If he turns Republican in his voting stance, kick him out of the caucus.
If he knows “where all the bones are buried”, he will probably retain his chairmanship. Politics as usual.
November 12th, 2008 at 10:28 amI have no idea what should be done about Lieberman. He has been such a jerk that I have lost so much respect for him. I think President-Elect Obama does not want him out of the Democratic caucus, but should he have a chairmanship? I think that is pushing it.
November 12th, 2008 at 10:29 amIn life, there are choices and consequences.
The consequences that should meet Joe Lieberman for his choice to endorse John McCain is losing his Chairmanship.
Any other consequences would suggest that what Joe did was acceptable. Is that really the message we want to send to our elected officials?
November 12th, 2008 at 10:30 am“I have never known a finer man than Joe Lieberman.”
That says a lot about you, McCain.
November 12th, 2008 at 10:31 amNope, sorry, Joe has got to go. Period.
November 12th, 2008 at 10:34 amHistorical presidence shows that stripping him of his chairmanship would be the norm and in my opinion it is both warrented and deserving. That being said, I can understand Obama’s stance regarding the Dem caucus. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. There is an awfully good chance that Lieberman won’t last past the next election cycle at which time it will be “good riddance”.
November 12th, 2008 at 10:34 amIf Joe LIEberman is a progressive or liberal, then I’m a knuckle-dragging Neanderthal Rethuglican.
November 12th, 2008 at 10:45 amThe spineless Democrats cannot let Lieberman back into the fold after hat he did during the campaign. Where is the transformation into a progressive party? Not with Lieberman – or Obama…

November 12th, 2008 at 10:55 amIs the Israeli lobby really so powerful that we can not divorce our selves from it’s influence on our politics ? How can we ever be an honest broker for peace in the mid east when we are using the Israeli’s as a military outpost and they are using us to arm themselves to the teeth and shield them from the righteous indignation of the world community as they commit acts of aggression against a much weaker people.
November 12th, 2008 at 11:01 amThe world is grown too small for such things . Do we really want peace or is that no more than a charade ?

_______
No. It’s not that Israel influences us – we need Israel to do our dirty work.
November 12th, 2008 at 11:04 amJoe is all about Joe. His interests are self serving and he certainly does not care about the Democratic party. If he wants to stay in the Dem fold, then give him a minor role but don’t allow him to have ANY say in what happens. After all, this guy isn’t even a democrat! What are the Dems thinking about….why not ask a “liberal” repub to chair a committee too. . . ?
November 12th, 2008 at 11:08 amKeep Obama out of it??? well maybe publicly but privately he should be pushing Joe off the cliff..If he retains his chairmanship it’s Obama’s fault…the buck stops with him.
November 12th, 2008 at 11:08 am“Is the Israeli lobby really so powerful that we can not divorce our selves from it’s influence on our politics?” -Freeman
First of all, for someone who cares only about Israel, why doesn’t Senator Lieberman support the release of Jonathan Pollard from Prison? Moreover, how is Senator Lieberman more pro-Israel than any of his Senate colleagues? Lastly, why is being pro-Israel (or pro-France, pro-England, etc…) mean that you are anti-America? Martin Luther King Jr. once said that: “You declare, my friend, that you do not hate the Jews, you are merely ‘anti-Zionist.’ And I say, let the truth ring forth from the high mountain tops, let it echo through the valleys of God’s green earth: When people criticize Zionism, they mean Jews–this is God’s own truth.”
November 12th, 2008 at 11:08 amFreeman. keep your biggoted statements for your KKK ralies.

Homeland security is best served by our being ethical in our international relationships . Decades of overthrowing other governments ,assassinating world leaders , training death squads ,influencing foreign elections and profiting through the sales of weapons to war zones must become a thing of the past . Aside from truly minor differences we are all, the same the world over .
November 12th, 2008 at 11:10 amALL GODS CHILDREN !
Patriot Acting, unfortunately waiting for the next election cycle to get rid of Lieberman is four years away. The entire first term of the Obama administration. Betrayal should be punished appropriately, and allowing him to stay in the Dem caucus and/or retaining the chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee (upon which he did nothing for two years), doesn’t even make any kind of logical sense.
November 12th, 2008 at 11:15 amLieberman is so distraught he turned to an ape for therapy:
STAMFORD, CT – In the midst of helping John McCain grieve, PhD Ape took a red-eye flight Monday night to be with Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman.
November 12th, 2008 at 11:22 amHow would McCain know Lieberman was good or not on national security? McCain didn’t seem to know the difference between Shia and Sunni or what Wahabism represented.
November 12th, 2008 at 11:30 amGive the chairmanship of the Homeland security committee to Russ Feingold , he is defender of civil liberties , proposed the amendment to the FISA bill to strip it of retroactive immunity and his sensitivity to our basic rights is necessary in a committee that could well be more dangerous to our democracy than the people which they are supposedly empowered to protect us from !
November 12th, 2008 at 11:33 amDammit, I was hoping that after he got bruised in the election we wouldn’t have to see his fascist face again.

November 12th, 2008 at 12:19 pmJoe LIEberman needs to get the boot. First, he betrays the Democrats, not only stumping for McPutz, then he SLANDERS Obama,(no doubt sucking up to the Rethugs-hoping for a cabinet position), now he’s sucking up to the Dems, hoping to keep his chair. He has NO scruples, simply follows which way the wind blows.
Sorry LIEberman, actions have consequences. You made your bed, DEAL WITH IT!
November 12th, 2008 at 12:27 pmMcCain :”I have never known a finer man than Joe Lieberman”.
This shows that McCain still lacks the necessary experience and judgement of people.
McCain’s trust in inexperienced Sarah Palin to run this country, and his description of Joe Lieberman as the finest man he met, shows that McCain ,regardless of his empty slogan ‘Country First’, still needs a lot to learn.
When one is to put ‘country first’, then one must stay away from people like Sarah Palin and Joe Lieberman.
November 12th, 2008 at 12:46 pmSadly President elect Barack Obama feels the same way about Traitor Joe LIEberman. Now I agree with partisan politics but allowing LIEberman who spoke badly about Barack as he supported McCain/Palin to remain as a committee chairman is a huge mistake! The old boys club in DC is at it again!
November 12th, 2008 at 12:59 pm“Check out ThinkProgress’s new report, “Joe Lieberman: The Progressive Who Lost His Way.”
Excellent montage – should be required reading by the Senators sitting in judgment – take the gavel away from Joe.
